Africa and Africans in World Christianity
recent history and contemporary realities
A Select Bibliography
compiled by
Joshua Robert Barron
revised 9 February 2023
Africa and Africans are playing an increasingly important role within World
Christianity. Not only is what happens in Africa Christianity more and more
representative of Christianity as a whole (as Andrew F. Walls began to prophetically
observe even in the 1970s) — just as was the case with Euro-American Christianity
between the Reformation Era and the mid-twentieth century — but the African
Diaspora is playing an ever larger role in planting and leading churches within the old
strongholds of Christendom where Christianity has receded. This is a selection of
important scholarship studying these stories.
The cover art is a bas relief carving which adorns the front of the Communion Table in the building of
the Narok Community Christian Church in Narok, Kenya; it was carved by a Kamba member of the
congregation. This is a multiethnic congregation with multiethnic leadership; Maasai form the largest
group, representing about 40% of the congregation. Other well-represented groups include AgĩkƩyƩ
(aka Kikuyu), Luhya (aka Abaluyia), Kisii (aka Abagusii), Luo, and of course Kamba (aka Akamba).
The book covers just below are “must read” titles, along with all texts by Andrew F. Walls and Lamin
Sanneh.

Africa And Africans In World Christianity Recent History And Contemporary Realities (Bibliography)

  • 1. Africa and Africans in World Christianity recent history and contemporary realities A Select Bibliography compiled by Joshua Robert Barron revised 9 February 2023 Africa and Africans are playing an increasingly important role within World Christianity. Not only is what happens in Africa Christianity more and more representative of Christianity as a whole (as Andrew F. Walls began to prophetically observe even in the 1970s) — just as was the case with Euro-American Christianity between the Reformation Era and the mid-twentieth century — but the African Diaspora is playing an ever larger role in planting and leading churches within the old strongholds of Christendom where Christianity has receded. This is a selection of important scholarship studying these stories. The cover art is a bas relief carving which adorns the front of the Communion Table in the building of the Narok Community Christian Church in Narok, Kenya; it was carved by a Kamba member of the congregation. This is a multiethnic congregation with multiethnic leadership; Maasai form the largest group, representing about 40% of the congregation. Other well-represented groups include AgÄ©kĆ©yĆ© (aka Kikuyu), Luhya (aka Abaluyia), Kisii (aka Abagusii), Luo, and of course Kamba (aka Akamba). The book covers just below are “must read” titles, along with all texts by Andrew F. Walls and Lamin Sanneh.
