2. What is an online classroom or a learning management system (LMS)? Online learning is a form of distance learning in which the class or course is done on the Internet. Web enhanced classrooms use traditional classroom settings. Technology is integrated into daily instruction and helps to supplement traditional instruction.
3. Benefits of Online Classrooms: Online classroom accessible 24/7 from anywhere(home, school, work, library) Collaboration (discussion forums) Student centered learning Management of content and materials Accessibility of materials for students, parents, and teachers Online assessments Scheduling of assignments and announcements are posted in advance
4. Why use an online classroom or a learning management system (LMS) according to (Hargis, 2007)? Student supported learning environments. According to Follansbee (1997) results show that online use can increase student performance (Hargis, 2007). Students will have access to an array of information on the internet that can be accessed from their online classroom. Students become active participants in their own knowledge (Hargis, 2007). Technology allows the teacher to devote attention to a more “global facilitation of learning” (Hargis, 2007 ). Teachers assist students in becoming active participants in the constriction of their own knowledge.
5. How can you get started? Convince and explain to decision makers (such as principals, or superintendents) the benefits of online learning to students (such as various learning styles are addressed while working in an online classroom environment). Sustain relationships with in-service teachers, faculty members, and leaders. Provide examples of online classroom environments to share with colleagues. Find an online learning platform that you can create your own on-line classroom!
