2. Introduction
⢠This is the final, in-depth evaluation of my final cover and double-
page spread.
⢠In this evaluation I will explain almost every aspect of my
creations, going into why they were designed in the way they
were.
⢠I will not however explain how they were made, as I already did
this in my creation diaries.
⢠I hope you enjoy this presentation.
3. The masthead is both big and bold, and
has also been stylised to fit the digital
theme of my magazineâs main cover story,
which is what modern magazines often do.
I did not include a slogan or any other
type of skyline above this text, which is
something that I could consider doing with
my future creations.
There isnât much to say about
the barcode. It follows the same
look and layout as every other
magazine barcode, and was
custom created by me on
another software. I donât think
that I could have improved on it
in any way.
The cover lines that are present on
this page are all well-formatted in my
opinion. All of their titles are short
and yet informative, the lines follow
the same style and colour scheme as
the rest of the page, which gives them
a feeling of consistency, and overall
they are fit for what they are supposed
to do â briefly highlight the other
articles present in the magazine to the
viewer. To improve next time, I could
try more cover line layouts to make
sure that I chose the best one possible.
The dominant image is always the main
attraction on an artistic cover such as this, and
I believe that I handled it very well. The colour
of the image does not exactly fit the blue
colour scheme of the text, but it coincides
with it well to create one, synchronised look
on the page. The image is clear, and it is clear
to the reader that it is linked to the main
article as it dominates most of the page, along
with the main cover line just below it. In an
effort to improve next time, I could
experiment more with the positioning of the
dominant image i.e. placing it in front of the
masthead to have it cover some of it and even
having it cover some of the other cover lines
on the page, to highlight its importance.
The main cover line is also well-executed on
this page. It is bright and bold, which means
that it successfully catches the readerâs eye,
and it sums up the article it displays well
enough for the reader to be interested. If I
were to make any changes to it next time, I
would likely try to make the subheading a
different colour to the main title of the
cover line, to change things up a little.
4. Colour Scheme and Style
⢠The colour scheme that I chose for my magazine cover is effective for a few reasons.
⢠Firstly, it fits the cybernetic tone that my main cover story placed upon my magazine, as it makes the text
look almost holographic, which gives it the technological theme that would likely appeal to a variety of
modern audiences.
⢠Secondly, it makes my text bright and bold, which of course makes it ultimately effective as it will almost
definitely catch the viewerâs eye when it is seen on store shelves, especially considering how well the
turquoise text contrasts with the black background.
⢠Thirdly, the fonts that best fit this style and colour make the entirety of the page incredibly easy to read.
All of the text is very box-like and this causes it to be very appealing to modern audiences, as people seem
to prefer simplistic design over large, complicated mounds of text.
⢠With regards to the style, the tone used on the dominant image and the âglitchy pixelsâ that I included
throughout the page make the overall cover appear almost digital. Again, this not only causes it to be
more relevant and consistent with the main cover story, but it is also very appealing to modern,
technology-obsessed audiences.
⢠If I were to make any changes to my future colour schemes, I would likely consider using a wider variety of
colours and a brighter background to change things up, but overall the cover that I have created here is
very effective with regards to the way it looks.
5. Fit For Purpose?
⢠When aiming at a target audience of both casual and experienced media enthusiasts aged 12-30, there is quite a wide array of things that one
can do to try to appeal to this demographic.
⢠My cover uses a mix of both bright and dark styles, which not only helps the text contrast with its background but could potentially also allow me
to reach a wider range of people, with the bright colours appealing to younger individuals while the older readers are drawn in by the darker
tone of the magazine.
⢠As I explained in my creative analysis, the fonts and overall style used appeals to many young individuals as the theme is somewhat digital (even
though the magazine is in print) and most of the articles are technology-based in one way or another. This makes it more likely for the people
within my target demographic to pick up the magazine when they see this cybernetically stylised cover on the store shelf.
⢠With regards to how this page is written, I think that this aspect of the cover would also be appealing to my target audience. The cover lines are
all short, which appeals to the short attention spans of many young people today, and some of them also contain a rhyme or joke, which donât
necessarily have to make people laugh as bad jokes are often so bad that they become funny to the reader, which ultimately makes the cover
line more memorable and even if the viewer does not immediately buy the magazine, they could potentially remember the bad joke that saw on
the cover and purchase it on another occasion to see the story behind it.
⢠The content that I decided to include on my cover is also one of the appealing factors on the page. Virtually every article has an appeal to a
different type of person, whether they are a âbookwormâ with regards to media (these people often follow box office sales, which one of my
cover lines highlights) or just a casual moviegoer that wants to see the latest blockbuster (which is my main cover article).
⢠All-in-all I think that this magazine cover is extremely appealing to my target demographic from many different perspectives, both with regards
to design and all of the other features that it contains.
⢠However, if I were to try to make changes in my future creations for optimum appeal, I would likely try to include more cover lines and possibly
some more cover elements, like a skyline, to make the page feel more diverse and to potentially increase the appeal that it ultimately has on the
people that I am aiming this magazine at.
6. The spread title is a reference to the colour scheme introduced on my cover. In fact, this
colour scheme subtly continues throughout this page. This text also has the same style as the
coverâs text, and the title is both big enough to be immediately noticed and small enough to
not be in the way of the dominant image or any of the kicker text. If I were to improve upon
this next time, Iâd likely experiment more with the positioning and style of the text to make
better outcomes possible.
I also included social media possibilities for my audience.
The logos that I used are not of my own design, but are
credited as third part in a previous document. This sort of
inclusion would help to spread the word about whatever
the article is covering, therefore making it effective.
The kicker text is also quite well-
executed as it gives the reader the
proper introduction that allows them to
decide whether the article that is
beneath this kicker is worth reading or
not. This kicker also follows the colour
scheme of the page very well, which
gives the overall look of the top 2/3 of
the page a consistent feeling. If I were
to change anything in any of my future
creations with regards to the kicker, I
would likely experiment with its
positioning. It is not at all bad on this
creation, but thereâs something about
its formatting that could be changed in
the future.
With regards to creative choices, I
think that the article is well-
formatted (I will go into its content
on a later slide). The text is in
different colour to help the readers
differentiate between questions and
answers, and the large gap in the
middle of the two columns makes
sure that the page roll will not disturb
any of the text.
The page numbering is also well-executed. The numbers
contain different colours and the title of the magazine, and
are big enough to be noticed and useful, but are also small
enough not to be distracting from the other text on the page.
The photographer crediting is a
compulsive inclusion on a double
page spread. This helps the
readers identify the person
behind the photo. I believe that I
also placed this part of the page
quite well, as it is not distracting
from the dominant image, but is
definitely noticeable.
The dominant image is a very
important part of a double-page
spread, and I think that I handled
it pretty well. It is inserted in a
away that covers most of the page,
which was a good stylistic choice,
and the image is dark enough to
have text placed upon it but is also
bright enough to be eye-catching.
If I were to make any changes to
this part of a spread in any future
creations, I could possibly alter its
positioning.
7. Colour Scheme and Style
⢠The style and colour scheme that I decided to continue on from the magazine cover to this spread add a feeling of
completion to the articleâs presentation.
⢠The idea of the main title being presented in the exact same style as all of the cover text, including the inserted âglitchy
pixelsâ all around it and the smart filter that was applied, makes the magazine feel more unanimous in its design, which
could be a point of appeal to a certain portion of my target demographic as many people like the idea of a neat and tidy,
consistent design and layout.
⢠With regards to the actual layout, I think that my choice to have the dominant image cover most of the spread was a good
move on my part, as it gives the overall article a more accomplished and even somewhat artistic look.
⢠The colour scheme that I decided to go with on this spread is also nothing new to readers that originally viewed the cover.
The turquoise colours continue throughout these two pages, whether it be the title, the kicker text, the social media
section and even the article itself is multi-coloured in a way, as the questions can be colour differentiated by the readers.
⢠This colour scheme again appeals to most of my target demographic, as it gives the magazine a cybernetic look, which
likely appeals to the younger side of my audience, and the overall simplicity and layout of this spread could generate
appeal for the older half of the audience as people will definitely find the design easy to follow and all of the text easy to
read.
⢠If I were to change anything on my future creations with regards to creative choices on my double-page spread, I would
likely continue to experiment with the size and positioning of the dominant image, and the kicker text that in this case is
included within it. I could think about having the kicker text next to the image instead of actually being placed within it,
which would give me more variety when it comes to my layout.
8. Fit For Purpose?
⢠I believe that the way that my double-page spread is presented is generally appealing to the audience that I am trying to
reach with my content.
⢠My main focus with regards to demographic appeal is the article in this case. The tone in which it is written is
simultaneously colloquial and informative, which appeals to both the younger and older ends of my demographicâs age
spectrum, but the way that the article is formatted is also of great importance.
⢠As I mentioned earlier, the design of this page makes everything easy to follow and read, which will make the reader more
likely to continue reading this particular issue, and ultimately could also convince them to subscribe to âKinoverseâ in the
long run, meaning that it would have then achieved its purpose with regards to appeal and sales.
⢠The way in which this article is portrayed is also important when considering the viewers initially flipping through it while
still at the store. It is a known fact that most people do not end up buying a particular magazine without first skim-reading
its content to decide whether it is worthy of their purchase. The big, bright and bold manner in which this (and other
articles in this issue) are presented would likely catch the readerâs eye (especially considering the bright kicker) which
would encourage them to read the small piece of text to determine whether the article is worth reading, and the main
cover article is often what draws people to the magazine in the first place.
⢠Overall Iâd have to say that the way in which I executed the production of my double-page spread will cause it to be
effective and appealing to my target demographic, which means that I have supposedly done my job well.
⢠If I were to change anything in any of my future creations with regards to the formatting and presentation of my spread, I
could possibly try to change my style of writing. By this I mean experimenting with article tones and lengths to find the
best possible match to the topic that the article is covering.
9. Conclusion
⢠To sum up my latter points, I believe that the way I designed and executed the
creation of my magazine makes it very fitting for what itâs trying to achieve.
⢠The colour scheme is bright and bold, which catches the readerâs eye on store
shelves and during their first flick-through of the issueâs content, the text size
and general layout is very simplistic and blocky, which many modern users aged
12-30 find appealing as it helps them to make reading easier and more
interesting, and the overall creative aspect of the magazine feels very relevant
to both the movie it is promoting and the modern society it is a part of.
⢠In terms of its content, my magazine maintains a good balance of colloquial and
informative tones in all of its text, allowing some strands of humour to pop up
where necessary and allowing the more serious and informative tone take over
where it will be adequate.
⢠Overall, my magazine will almost definitely be a success in its media genre, and
I look forward to advancing in skill in my future creations.
10. Thank you for taking the time to read my final
magazine evaluation.
