1. “Affiliation” – Proposal
Synopsis
In a city corrupted to the core by many different gang families,each controllingtheir own districtof trafficking
to run their business,two leaders of the two strongest gangs have devised a way to ensure maximum
efficiency – the affiliation of the seven gangs to from one, unanimous workingcriminal body.However, putting
so many dangerous people in one circlewas alwaysgoingto bringconsequences, some bigger for certain
individuals.
Logline
Ten years after the successful affiliation of the majority of the gang families in control of the city, Benjamin and
Spencer, the two strongest gang leaders in town, have gathered together in a confined location to celebrate
their achievements as well as their grand empire – but littledo they know that they will notspend this
momentous night alone,with truths to be revealed and debts to be repaid.
Screenplay Structure
Act 1 – Benjamin and Spencer meet in a bar that acts as the main hub for the city’s criminal gangleaders as
well as their schemes. They both sitin the bar,recounting the pastand celebratingtheir achievements
unaware of the danger that followed them.
Act 2 – As Benjamin and Spencer continueto converse, Anthony, an individual fromtheir pastreturns to settle
old matters and pay old debts – includinga personal vendetta againstSpencer. Anthony has Spencer at
gunpoint as the rest of the individualsin thebar attempt to get their stories straightand set things right.
Anthony however has truths of his own to reveal.
Act 3 – With littleresistancefromthe other individuals,Anthony succeeds in killingSpencer and opens up
Benjamin’s eyes to truths he never knew before.
Characters
Spencer – a master schemer and gang leader of one of the largestgang families in thecity.He believes that
words and the ability to think straightunder pressureoutweigh the ability to use a gun under every
circumstance,and his manipulativenatureoften shows this to be true without anyone around him directly
realisingthatthey are doinghis bidding.He was the individual responsiblefor comingup with the idea to
affiliateeach gang to from a stronger compound, possibly ultimately to his own ulterior motive and benefit.
Benjamin – although he is the head of his very own affiliated gangfamily,Benjamin is Spencer’s right-hand-
man and best friend – or so he thinks.He is a diplomatic yetimpulsiveindividual,good with words but quick to
pull his gun if a situation gets too heated for his liking.Benjamin and Spencer share a longcriminal history
through thick and thin, and Benjamin has proven to be Spencer’s loyal accompliceon many occasions.Hedoes
not know the full picture,however, often due to Spencer’s secrecy even to his best friend.
Pete – the owner of the confidential bar and an individual trusted enough to be loosely connected to the gang
leaders and those under their payroll.Pete sees himself as an equal to the individualswhich heserves on a
daily basis,butto the other gang leaders he often ends up being more of a laughingstock and a cheap
individual thatcan be easily manipulated into doingsomeone’s biddingwith littleor no motivation.
2. Anthony – a leader of one of the seven gangs of the city, Anthony sawit best not to affiliatewith the other
corruptindividualsaround him,sensingSpencer’s ulterior motive early on in their formal friendship.He’s a
simpleman, but he will do whatever he sees as rightat all costs,even if itmeans he has to kill somepeople
alongthe way. He isn’tafraid to get his hands dirty if he sees itnecessary,and will stop at nothing to reveal a
corruptindividual’s trueintentions.
Film Treatment
Benjamin (mid 30s) waits impatiently in the secret bar for his partner to arriveto celebrate the special
occasion of the 10-year anniversary of the affiliation of the six gangfamilies.Pete (mid 40s) recognises
Benjamin from his cuff links,the signatureindicator of an affiliated gangleader.
As Pete and Benjamin reconnect with each other, Spencer (late30s) finally arrivesatthe scene. The three men
exchange memories and reconnect with each other, discussingtheir pasts as well as their recent experiences,
recounting the initial affiliation.
Their quiet celebration is interrupted when Anthony (late 40s) intrudes into the bar, armed and aiminga
personal vendetta againstSpencer. Anthony holds Spencer at closegunpointfor the rest of the night, while
Pete betrays Benjamin and Benjamin raises firepower of his own, turningthe once quiet celebration into an
all-outshootout.
As the night continues,Anthony slowly begins to explain why Spencer deserves to die this way, revealingto
Benjamin information that Spencer had concealed. As Benjamin’s eyes are slowly opened, he soon comes to
realisethe affiliation wasn’tas much of a good deed as he had initially thought.
Target Audience
The target audiencefor this production is males aged 16-24,as the main representation is prominently male
although the filmdoes contain female characters to balanceoutthe gender representati ons.The age range
was chosen this way as the filmdeals with mature topics of corruption,violence,illegal traffickingetc but does
not present them in a gratuitous manner so as to warrantan older audience.
The unique sellingpointof this production will beits use of cuff links as a plotdevice,as the affiliation is
represented by each member wearinga pair to signify thatthey are indeed affiliated.This has never been
done within a filmbefore, and whileit is a minor detail itadds to the mythology and lore of the film’s world,
which would again appeal to my audience.
