Science 7 - LAND and SEA BREEZE and its Characteristics
Final Storyboards
1. Final storyboards
Afterperformingexperimentswithawide range of storyboardformatsamonga range of different
mediasectors,Iwas able totake the knowledgeandpointstoimprove fromthese initial draftsto
create more efficient, final versionsof the storyboardsthatI woulduse foreachmediasectorif I
were toget involvedinproducingafilm, ananimatedfeature andavideogame adaptationof the
narrative I hadoriginallyscripted.
FilmAdaptation
The main aspectsof the filmstoryboardsthatI initiallydesigned thatneededtobe improvedwere
the layoutof the entire page aswell asthe clarityof the textalongside it.Isuggestedgoingdigital
whendesigningthe storyboard,sothatisexactlywhatI did.

7. The initial sketchesforthe shotsthatwere usedtocreate thisfinal formattingof myfilmstoryboard
were sketchedphysicallyonpaperusingstandardpencils.Theywere thenscannedintomyPCand
formattedadequatelytoaccountfor the neededinformationtobe displayedaswell asforthe space
for thisinformationtobe displayedin. The storyboardspecifiesthe type of shot, the shotnumber,
any dialogue,soundand/ormovement aswell asclearlydisplayingwhatthe shotshouldlooklike
on-screen.The amountof three shotsperpage allowsforextensive descriptionsof the shotsif
necessarybutalsoleavesenoughroomtoappropriatelydisplaythe sketchedshotinorderforitto
be clearlyvisibletoassistduringthe productionstage of the film.
Overall, Ibelieve thatthe final designof myfilmstoryboardcheckall of the boxesnecessarytobe
effectiveinwhatitissupposedtobe usedfor, and the digital aspectof the storyboardnot only
allowsitto looktidybutalsoallowsitto be formattedlesspermanentlywitheditsable tostill be
made uponthe final document, addingefficiencytothe overall finalproduct.
8. AnimatedFilm
As discussedduringthe evaluationof mydraftstoryboardsthatwouldhypotheticallybe usedduring
the productionof an animatedfeature film,Ideducedthatanystoryboardsusedwithinmodern
animatedprojectsdonotgive a great amountof attentiontothe technicalitiesof eachshotand
oftentendtofocus more on whatisactuallyhappeningwithinthe shot.Idecidedtoincorporate this
ideaintomyfinal storyboardforthe animatedversionof myfilm, rightafterinitiallydigitizingitasI
didthe rest of my final producedstoryboardsforthe sake of efficiency.
Once again, the initial sketchesandbasiclayoutwere constructedbyhandandscannedintothe PC
to be furtherworkedon digitally, whichagainmakesthe textmuchmore prominentandeasierto
read,and allowsmore freedomwheneditingthe page afterwards.Asstatedearlier,agreaterdeal
of attentionisputtowardsthe lookof the final shotsratherthan theirtechnicalities, leavingmore
room forthe sketchesof the storyboardsandsmalleramountsof space forthe notesto be taken
underneatheachshot, althoughthisamountisstill adequatelysizedtobe able to displayall of the
informationnecessaryforeachshot,whichinthiscase highlightsonlythe characterdialogue and
soundsforeach shot. The shot framesthemselvesare bigenoughtohouse extrahand-writtennotes
on character andcamera movement,meaningthatanyactionnecessarytobe describedis
compensatedforduringthe productionof the feature.
Overall,the above considerationsforthe specificallydifferingmainaspectsof astoryboardforan
animatedfilmallowedme tocreate anefficientfinal layoutformatfora storyboardfora
hypothetical situationof myscriptbeingadaptedintoananimatedfeature film.The handdrawn
sketcheslookprofessional andhave asense of traditionandthe digital notesandshotnumbering
allowsforeasy visibilityandoverall functionality, aswell ascreatinga balance betweendifferent
creative techniquesusedtomake thisfinal storyboardformat.
9. VideoGame Adaptation
Duringthe developmentstage of mystoryboardsforthe videogame adaptationof my scriptI stated
that there are many differenttypesof videogamestochoose fromandtherefore the final
storyboardformatmay notbe as clearas the othertwomediums.ThisiswhyIchose to settle ona
narrative-drivensingle-playeradventure game,one thatincorporatesbothinteractivegameplayas
well ascinematiccutscenestoaidwiththe progressionof itsstory. The image below isaflatplan
(the closestthingtoa videogame’sstoryboard) forone of the levelsthatwouldappearwithinthe
videogame adaptationof myscript.
10. Thistype of storyboardismuch more technical ratherthanvisuallyappealing, asitexistsforthe sole
purpose of outliningtothe game developersthe narrativestructure of agivenlevel. The flatplan
outlinesanyvariablesthatthe playermayinteractwithalongwiththe playeritself andthe main
final goal of the level. The flatplanthenoutlineswhatoccursuponan interactionwithanobject,
specifyingsound-clipsplayingorinitiatingcutscenes,whichwouldbe storyboardedusingthe same
formatas the animatedfeature storyboards, asthe game’scutsceneswouldalsohave tobe
animated.Thisflatplanwascreatedinthe same wayas the two otherstoryboardformatswithin
thisfinal evaluation,beinghand-sketchedandinsertedintothe digitalmedium.
Overall,Ibelieve thatthe simplicityof thisflatplanwouldallow forthe productionof the video
game adaptationof my scriptto run much more smoothly, asitwouldallow the developerstobe
able to readthroughit easilyandincorporate itselementsmore quickly.Althoughthisdesignisvery
simple, itdoeshoweverhighlightall of the necessaryspecificationsforthe creationof anin-game
level,whichcanbe consideredasuccessfulbalance of information.
Conclusion
In the end,I believe thatwhilecreatingthe final versionsof the storyboardsforeachof my different
mediasectors,IincorporatedwhatI hadlearnedanddeducedduringmyinitial experimentation
stage intomy final designs, allowingthemtobe made more efficientandeffective inwhattheyare
supposedtobe designedfor.Thismakesmyworkinitself effective andefficient,andIbelieve that
the creationof my final storyboardscanbe consideredasuccess.
