Planning and Production
Charlotte Oliver
Style Sheet 2 (Fonts)
After looking at existing products fonts in both makeup brands and beauty
magazines. I decided to pick out my own fonts from Dafont.com. I hadn’t
decided on a working title so I just used the word ‘magazine’ to what suited
my aesthetic.
To the left these were my favourite fonts I saw through the website. I tired to
look for fonts that were different to one another.
The first one named ‘The Light Font’ I liked because it reminded me of a
classic makeup brand, similar to Clinique, or Givenchy. I picked this particular
font as I felt it might appeal to the older end of my wide age range. As it will
be something my target audience will appeal to which is crucial for my
production.
For my second chosen font ‘Fun Sized Xerographer Font’ I liked picked a font
that was similar to the one I used in experiment 1. As I liked how the shaded
background behind the letters gave the title almost texture, and the effect of
this improved more with colour inserted into the letters.
For my third font ‘CF Three Dimensions by CloutierFontes’ I selected this
particular font because I liked how it was a more elegant, softer looking font
compared to the previous font. This is something I could picture on the front
of a beauty/makeup magazine.
In my fourth selected font ‘Nova’ is a font I had used before in my first print
rotation. I felt this was a font you could add your own touch too. For example
in my first rotation I liked how I added graphics of roses winding around the
letters, the give more impact as well as my own personal touch with more
depth and something the audience might be drawn too.
In my final font ‘A Royal Black Block’ was one of my favourites. As I felt it was
something different to any of the fonts I had seen. It almost looked 3D, and I
pictured the font making my production more professional and artistic and
something that my target audience might be attracted to as it is something
different and individual
Style Sheets (Colour Scheme)
• For my colour schemes I used color.adobe.com. The reasoning for this was that I
found that I could place an image with colours I liked and select certain elements
of the picture to include in my colour bar. I wanted to ensure that my colour
schemes had a bright eye-catching colours to attract my target audiences
attention, however I wanted to ensure that they had slight differences so that I
could select which colour bar I preferred the most.
• In my first colour scheme on the left, I wanted colours that were bright but with a
slightly more duller undertone, so that if I applied this to my working title font it
would not distract the audiences attention away from the main images and the
content of my magazine. I also liked how it had slightly more neutral colours so
that my slightly older target audience did not feel they were buying something
that belonged to a child or an teen magazine. This bar is also something I am
seeing with the lasted launches of makeup .e.g. KKW and Fenty Beauty have the
use of bright, popping blues and gold's.
• Within the second colour scheme I wanted to go with colours that had a ‘summer’
vibe. For example the use of sunset orange, hot pink, and midnight blue. The
reasoning behind this was that I wanted to base my makeup magazine articles on
summer beauty and tips for summer makeup. I find that my audience would like
these colours as they would associate it with a fresh summer look.
• For the final colour scheme I wanted to go with colours that I personally resonate
with, I find that these colours are something I find myself wearing, applying in
makeup and naturally gravitating toward when I see them in existing products
such as Kylie Cosmetics, Mac and others. I found it was important to include my
own taste in colours so that I could enjoy the production even more.
• Intend to make sure that whatever colour scheme I use I will try to mix the colour
within my images, title, taglines and fonts. So that I get a wide range of colour yet
they all work. So that my production appeals to all of my target audience
Style Sheets (colour schemes)
• For my colour schemes I used color.adobe.com. The reasoning for this was tha
I found that I could place an image with colours I liked and select certain
elements of the picture to include in my colour bar. I wanted to ensure that m
second lot of colour schemes were more dull and neutral colours to attract
my older target audiences attention as they might find nude colours more
sophisticated and elegant. However I wanted to ensure that they had slight
differences to my previous colour schemes on slide 1 so that I could select
which colour bar and schemes I preferred the most.
.In my first colour scheme on the left I liked how the first two colours had two
different shades of grey with a slight undertone of pink to add a feminine touch,
the same with the two bottom browns, as I feel that the same colours but in a
different shade compliment one another perfectly and give a sophisticated look
that you would likely see in a an existing product like Vogue. But with these colours
alone I felt that they would come across to dull, so to amend this I added a pop of
orange/red so the audiences eyes would be attracted to this colour and the
product itself. In my second colour scheme I wanted to keep with the neutrals as I
felt they added an aspect of elegance. I also liked how this was my only colour bar
with the shade black, I did this knowing that I could place some of my text in black,
I knew this would identify with my older audience as text is often seen in the
colour black. The baby blue and baby pink was a nice touch as I liked how they
conveyed a naturalistic vibe which is something I had considered to put in my
article ‘Natural makeup step by step'. For my final colour scheme I wanted to use
colours that had a natural flow to them, I liked how these colours alone conveyed
a khaki/ army like imagery. As this is something I am seeing throughout the makeup
and beauty industry, .i.e. the use of clay mask to enhance skin and skin care, so I
wanted to show this in my own colour scheme.
Existing Products
• This double page spread stuck out to me for many reasons. The first
being is that I found it to be a very girly. I found that the colour scheme
of pink, white, and nudes conveyed a feminine Mise En Scene and
something I could certainly see applying to my own production. I also
noted that within my own colour schemes I had reference to different
shades of pink and disgust how this worked in a chic way. This was
proved to me as I can see this done in this DPS. I also got inspiration from
this DPS, that the background layer had what seemed to be a smudge of
pink lipstick which I personally really liked as it displayed the makeup in a
different way. Where the audience can actually see the product, rather
than just in its packaging. Another reason why I liked this particular
double page spread, is the actual images themselves, the reason being is
that I found that they are applicable to my production. I could use
‘infinity cave’ in the college studio and photograph the models and the
cosmetics/makeup. I could also see myself editing these photo’s on
Adobe Photoshop then applying them on Adobe InDesign easily to create
a seamlessness look for my production. The text along the side is also
something I liked as they gave a description of what they do and the
price, however for my own double page spread I wanted to give a more
of a review of the products and how to apply the makeup, just like a step
by step process to make your own beauty remedies.
• The second double page spread, had the same colour scheme of pink
and white, however I liked this spread slightly more as it had more
colours such as yellow and bright purple. I liked this more die to the fact I
feel it is more eye-catching and I feel that my audience my find this kind
of colour scheme more appealing. The font in both of these double page
spreads had a very similar ‘Light Calibri’ font but in slight italics, with
both a black colour. This against the white background gave a
sophisticated look similar to what you would see in a existing product.
The photography within in the second DPS have more models, but in
different environments, for example within the studio, or selfies or
paparazzi images.
Existing Products
• For my second DPS in my production, I wanted to use darker, more
neutral colours, to add something a little different for my production. For
example in the first existing product, I like how the background layer, had
an almost animalistic look.
• Images- On the left hand side of this ‘Allure’ double page spread, I had a
range of image type, for example many on the products and makeup are
obviously take in a studio similar to what Id want to put in my own
production. The location of the images were taken in a studio, this will
have been done to make the products look more glossy/expensive,
whereas the images of the models/author are taken in different
locations, such as a studio, runway, and ‘selfies’ that are made to look like
a polaroid effect. The angle of these image vary, the product images are
taken from a birds view angle, perhaps just to showcase the products to
the audience. The other images of the models are taken from a medium
close-up/medium shot. With different image effects, .i.e. the polaroid
images are in black and white, to potentially distinguish the authors and
the models.
• The lighting of the images are vey artificial and enhanced. This might
have been done to give a Photoshop imagery to suit the codes and
conventions of a beauty/makeup magazine. Within the double page
spread you don’t see many props as such used like you would in a fashion
magazine, I would personally like to add my own props to my
production. As for costume there is a lack of costume as the article is not
based upon clothes but on makeup. I will also apply this to my own
production.
• Colour scheme/Fonts/Text.
• The colour scheme for this double page spread, change from the left side
to the right side. I found this refreshing as most magazines try to keep
contingency through the DPS. However I liked the left hand side focusing
on ‘Au natural’ makeup, so in tern they used naturalistic colour within the
background and throughout that side of the page
(beige, pink, white, black). Compared to the right hand side, you notice a
more bolder and animalistic Mise En Scene. With the zebra print for the
back ground, this is something I want to apply to my own work as I feel
the audience will appreciate the cool looking effect for the DPS.
• Within this double page spread I loved the simplicity of the
Layout 1
In my layout 1 I wanted to apply what I had gathered in my style sheets. For example my background I decided to
place leopard print as the backdrop I will also potentially . The reasoning for this is that in my style sheet I wanted to
use one of my double page spread with neutral colours, such as brown, beige, white, and cream. I felt that using
animalistic patterns would create text image cohesion with the content of my article and my images, and of course
grab the attention of my audience, and perhaps add something different to my DPS. I also added ‘pops’ of colour such
as the pink and red smudges of makeup underneath images to convey the types of cosmetics I will include in my
production. For my text I wanted to give an idea of the layout of my piece rather than actually putting in my actual
article as that is something I have not written about. However this helped me inform what kind of article/text I wish
to write (animalistic makeup) I also did not place my final font as I felt this unnecessary to do until my final product is
in the making. I will replace ‘Calibri Body’ with one of my chosen fonts when I create my first DPS.
Layout 2
Within my planning of my production I wanted to do a double page spread on neutral colours, such as brown, white, beige, as
seen in the previous slide. I wanted my second double page spread to be the opposite to appeal to my audience, I wanted the
2nd piece to be very stereotypically ‘girly’ with the colours I explored in my style sheets, with bright pinks, blues, white and red.
I felt this was important as I could have both DPS to appeal the wide range of my target audience 10-30. I made my background
layer white, with a smudge of pink lipstick to add something different and make my second piece just as eye-catching as the
first but in a different more refreshing way. I also liked how this piece had a polaroid effect on the images, with a white
boarder, I felt this was more effective on making my production more ‘professional’ looking, and on reflection I will apply this
tool to both of my DPS. For my text I wanted to give an idea of the layout of my piece rather than actually putting in my actual
article as that is something I have not written about. However this helped me inform what kind of article/text I wish to write
(animalistic makeup) I also did not place my final font as I felt this unnecessary to do until my final product is in the making. I
will replace ‘Calibri Body’ with one of my chosen fonts when I create my first DPS.
Layout 3
For my first front cover I wanted to ensure that I
used bright colour, as seen in the background of
this image, of course it is only a stock image,
however I wanted to make sure I found an image
that I thought could convey the Mise En Scene I
desired. I liked the use of colours next to each
other, with the orange, the models dark hair, and
the bright pop of the flowers seen in the models
hair, I felt this image was front cover material
and had enough ‘white space’ above the models
head so I could ensure that I could put a big
enough title all across the top of the title space. I
picked this font as I felt it was the closet one to
‘Fun Sized’ as seen in my style sheets fonts, I felt
I wanted a font with an almost 3D effect, so that
it grabs my audiences attention and to add a
more retro effect on a makeup/beauty magazine.
Within my taglines I hope to put down sentences
that correspond with what content within my
magazine such as makeup and beauty.
I also tried to colour match the blue flowers to
place in to my text to my cover look more
polished and white to create contingency with
the barcode and to add something slightly
different.
Layout 4 For my second front cover I wanted to do
something just as eye-catching, but with a
slight twist for example, I liked how the
stock image from which I got from
Pintrest.com had baby pink colours,
yellow, baby blue and white. I felt this
corresponded with my second DPS very
well as it complimented to colours and
tones with both pieces. However this
image was slightly more difficult to work
with, for example there was no white
space on the actual image to place a title.
To over come this I made the image
smaller, so it had a white boarder
surrounding it, I liked this because I felt it
was something different to existing
products I had seen like Vogue and Cosmo,
and it also gave me a place to add a title,
in a almost retro like font. This was slightly
different font from my original choices as I
felt this font fitted the image better. ) I also
did not place my final font as I felt this
unnecessary to do until my final product is
in the making. I will replace ‘Calibri Body’
with one of my chosen fonts when I create
my first DPS.

Planning and production

  • 2. Style Sheet 2 (Fonts) After looking at existing products fonts in both makeup brands and beauty magazines. I decided to pick out my own fonts from Dafont.com. I hadn’t decided on a working title so I just used the word ‘magazine’ to what suited my aesthetic. To the left these were my favourite fonts I saw through the website. I tired to look for fonts that were different to one another. The first one named ‘The Light Font’ I liked because it reminded me of a classic makeup brand, similar to Clinique, or Givenchy. I picked this particular font as I felt it might appeal to the older end of my wide age range. As it will be something my target audience will appeal to which is crucial for my production. For my second chosen font ‘Fun Sized Xerographer Font’ I liked picked a font that was similar to the one I used in experiment 1. As I liked how the shaded background behind the letters gave the title almost texture, and the effect of this improved more with colour inserted into the letters. For my third font ‘CF Three Dimensions by CloutierFontes’ I selected this particular font because I liked how it was a more elegant, softer looking font compared to the previous font. This is something I could picture on the front of a beauty/makeup magazine. In my fourth selected font ‘Nova’ is a font I had used before in my first print rotation. I felt this was a font you could add your own touch too. For example in my first rotation I liked how I added graphics of roses winding around the letters, the give more impact as well as my own personal touch with more depth and something the audience might be drawn too. In my final font ‘A Royal Black Block’ was one of my favourites. As I felt it was something different to any of the fonts I had seen. It almost looked 3D, and I pictured the font making my production more professional and artistic and something that my target audience might be attracted to as it is something different and individual
  • 3. Style Sheets (Colour Scheme) • For my colour schemes I used color.adobe.com. The reasoning for this was that I found that I could place an image with colours I liked and select certain elements of the picture to include in my colour bar. I wanted to ensure that my colour schemes had a bright eye-catching colours to attract my target audiences attention, however I wanted to ensure that they had slight differences so that I could select which colour bar I preferred the most. • In my first colour scheme on the left, I wanted colours that were bright but with a slightly more duller undertone, so that if I applied this to my working title font it would not distract the audiences attention away from the main images and the content of my magazine. I also liked how it had slightly more neutral colours so that my slightly older target audience did not feel they were buying something that belonged to a child or an teen magazine. This bar is also something I am seeing with the lasted launches of makeup .e.g. KKW and Fenty Beauty have the use of bright, popping blues and gold's. • Within the second colour scheme I wanted to go with colours that had a ‘summer’ vibe. For example the use of sunset orange, hot pink, and midnight blue. The reasoning behind this was that I wanted to base my makeup magazine articles on summer beauty and tips for summer makeup. I find that my audience would like these colours as they would associate it with a fresh summer look. • For the final colour scheme I wanted to go with colours that I personally resonate with, I find that these colours are something I find myself wearing, applying in makeup and naturally gravitating toward when I see them in existing products such as Kylie Cosmetics, Mac and others. I found it was important to include my own taste in colours so that I could enjoy the production even more. • Intend to make sure that whatever colour scheme I use I will try to mix the colour within my images, title, taglines and fonts. So that I get a wide range of colour yet they all work. So that my production appeals to all of my target audience
  • 4. Style Sheets (colour schemes) • For my colour schemes I used color.adobe.com. The reasoning for this was tha I found that I could place an image with colours I liked and select certain elements of the picture to include in my colour bar. I wanted to ensure that m second lot of colour schemes were more dull and neutral colours to attract my older target audiences attention as they might find nude colours more sophisticated and elegant. However I wanted to ensure that they had slight differences to my previous colour schemes on slide 1 so that I could select which colour bar and schemes I preferred the most. .In my first colour scheme on the left I liked how the first two colours had two different shades of grey with a slight undertone of pink to add a feminine touch, the same with the two bottom browns, as I feel that the same colours but in a different shade compliment one another perfectly and give a sophisticated look that you would likely see in a an existing product like Vogue. But with these colours alone I felt that they would come across to dull, so to amend this I added a pop of orange/red so the audiences eyes would be attracted to this colour and the product itself. In my second colour scheme I wanted to keep with the neutrals as I felt they added an aspect of elegance. I also liked how this was my only colour bar with the shade black, I did this knowing that I could place some of my text in black, I knew this would identify with my older audience as text is often seen in the colour black. The baby blue and baby pink was a nice touch as I liked how they conveyed a naturalistic vibe which is something I had considered to put in my article ‘Natural makeup step by step'. For my final colour scheme I wanted to use colours that had a natural flow to them, I liked how these colours alone conveyed a khaki/ army like imagery. As this is something I am seeing throughout the makeup and beauty industry, .i.e. the use of clay mask to enhance skin and skin care, so I wanted to show this in my own colour scheme.
  • 5. Existing Products • This double page spread stuck out to me for many reasons. The first being is that I found it to be a very girly. I found that the colour scheme of pink, white, and nudes conveyed a feminine Mise En Scene and something I could certainly see applying to my own production. I also noted that within my own colour schemes I had reference to different shades of pink and disgust how this worked in a chic way. This was proved to me as I can see this done in this DPS. I also got inspiration from this DPS, that the background layer had what seemed to be a smudge of pink lipstick which I personally really liked as it displayed the makeup in a different way. Where the audience can actually see the product, rather than just in its packaging. Another reason why I liked this particular double page spread, is the actual images themselves, the reason being is that I found that they are applicable to my production. I could use ‘infinity cave’ in the college studio and photograph the models and the cosmetics/makeup. I could also see myself editing these photo’s on Adobe Photoshop then applying them on Adobe InDesign easily to create a seamlessness look for my production. The text along the side is also something I liked as they gave a description of what they do and the price, however for my own double page spread I wanted to give a more of a review of the products and how to apply the makeup, just like a step by step process to make your own beauty remedies. • The second double page spread, had the same colour scheme of pink and white, however I liked this spread slightly more as it had more colours such as yellow and bright purple. I liked this more die to the fact I feel it is more eye-catching and I feel that my audience my find this kind of colour scheme more appealing. The font in both of these double page spreads had a very similar ‘Light Calibri’ font but in slight italics, with both a black colour. This against the white background gave a sophisticated look similar to what you would see in a existing product. The photography within in the second DPS have more models, but in different environments, for example within the studio, or selfies or paparazzi images.
  • 6. Existing Products • For my second DPS in my production, I wanted to use darker, more neutral colours, to add something a little different for my production. For example in the first existing product, I like how the background layer, had an almost animalistic look. • Images- On the left hand side of this ‘Allure’ double page spread, I had a range of image type, for example many on the products and makeup are obviously take in a studio similar to what Id want to put in my own production. The location of the images were taken in a studio, this will have been done to make the products look more glossy/expensive, whereas the images of the models/author are taken in different locations, such as a studio, runway, and ‘selfies’ that are made to look like a polaroid effect. The angle of these image vary, the product images are taken from a birds view angle, perhaps just to showcase the products to the audience. The other images of the models are taken from a medium close-up/medium shot. With different image effects, .i.e. the polaroid images are in black and white, to potentially distinguish the authors and the models. • The lighting of the images are vey artificial and enhanced. This might have been done to give a Photoshop imagery to suit the codes and conventions of a beauty/makeup magazine. Within the double page spread you don’t see many props as such used like you would in a fashion magazine, I would personally like to add my own props to my production. As for costume there is a lack of costume as the article is not based upon clothes but on makeup. I will also apply this to my own production. • Colour scheme/Fonts/Text. • The colour scheme for this double page spread, change from the left side to the right side. I found this refreshing as most magazines try to keep contingency through the DPS. However I liked the left hand side focusing on ‘Au natural’ makeup, so in tern they used naturalistic colour within the background and throughout that side of the page (beige, pink, white, black). Compared to the right hand side, you notice a more bolder and animalistic Mise En Scene. With the zebra print for the back ground, this is something I want to apply to my own work as I feel the audience will appreciate the cool looking effect for the DPS. • Within this double page spread I loved the simplicity of the
  • 7. Layout 1 In my layout 1 I wanted to apply what I had gathered in my style sheets. For example my background I decided to place leopard print as the backdrop I will also potentially . The reasoning for this is that in my style sheet I wanted to use one of my double page spread with neutral colours, such as brown, beige, white, and cream. I felt that using animalistic patterns would create text image cohesion with the content of my article and my images, and of course grab the attention of my audience, and perhaps add something different to my DPS. I also added ‘pops’ of colour such as the pink and red smudges of makeup underneath images to convey the types of cosmetics I will include in my production. For my text I wanted to give an idea of the layout of my piece rather than actually putting in my actual article as that is something I have not written about. However this helped me inform what kind of article/text I wish to write (animalistic makeup) I also did not place my final font as I felt this unnecessary to do until my final product is in the making. I will replace ‘Calibri Body’ with one of my chosen fonts when I create my first DPS.
  • 8. Layout 2 Within my planning of my production I wanted to do a double page spread on neutral colours, such as brown, white, beige, as seen in the previous slide. I wanted my second double page spread to be the opposite to appeal to my audience, I wanted the 2nd piece to be very stereotypically ‘girly’ with the colours I explored in my style sheets, with bright pinks, blues, white and red. I felt this was important as I could have both DPS to appeal the wide range of my target audience 10-30. I made my background layer white, with a smudge of pink lipstick to add something different and make my second piece just as eye-catching as the first but in a different more refreshing way. I also liked how this piece had a polaroid effect on the images, with a white boarder, I felt this was more effective on making my production more ‘professional’ looking, and on reflection I will apply this tool to both of my DPS.
  • 9. Layout 3 For my first front cover I wanted to ensure that I used bright colour, as seen in the background of this image, of course it is only a stock image, however I wanted to make sure I found an image that I thought could convey the Mise En Scene I desired. I liked the use of colours next to each other, with the orange, the models dark hair, and the bright pop of the flowers seen in the models hair, I felt this image was front cover material and had enough ‘white space’ above the models head so I could ensure that I could put a big enough title all across the top of the title space. I picked this font as I felt it was the closet one to ‘Fun Sized’ as seen in my style sheets fonts, I felt I wanted a font with an almost 3D effect, so that it grabs my audiences attention and to add a more retro effect on a makeup/beauty magazine. Within my taglines I hope to put down sentences that correspond with what content within my magazine such as makeup and beauty. I also tried to colour match the blue flowers to place in to my text to my cover look more polished and white to create contingency with the barcode and to add something slightly different.
  • 10. Layout 4 For my second front cover I wanted to do something just as eye-catching, but with a slight twist for example, I liked how the stock image from which I got from Pintrest.com had baby pink colours, yellow, baby blue and white. I felt this corresponded with my second DPS very well as it complimented to colours and tones with both pieces. However this image was slightly more difficult to work with, for example there was no white space on the actual image to place a title. To over come this I made the image smaller, so it had a white boarder surrounding it, I liked this because I felt it was something different to existing products I had seen like Vogue and Cosmo, and it also gave me a place to add a title, in a almost retro like font. This was slightly different font from my original choices as I felt this font fitted the image better. ) I also did not place my final font as I felt this unnecessary to do until my final product is in the making. I will replace ‘Calibri Body’ with one of my chosen fonts when I create my first DPS.
