3. Graphics: A fresh, clean fashion
feel is given to the magazine
through its graphics. For example
the classic font that vogue uses for
all their issues. People know that
the magazine in front of by seeing
the classic font and normally a
picture of beautiful woman on the
front cover.
Cover-image
This Mise En Scene of the cover is
effective for the magazine
because it fits in the beauty,
fashion feel everything. In
addition to this the clear
background suggests elegance
and maturity letting the
magazine give off a good image.
Mode of address
Vogue or makeup magazines
often use quite formal and
professional language thought
out their world wide magazine.
This is suited to target to 15-30
year old woman mainly, who are
most likely to relate to this sort of
language. The magazine is
presented in a friendly manner.
4. ⢠What is the product?
⢠This product is a double page spread purely dedicated to beauty and makeup. The content of the DPS, has article content on how to
create âThe perfect browâ with graphical diagrams to perhaps grip audience.
⢠Who made the product?
⢠Gail Spooner (Professional Makeup artist) www.gailspooner.co.uk as quoted from her website which gives a more in-depth
understanding of her job role and why she makes DPS. âAs a freelance makeup artist I can travel anywhere (subject to my availability
and additional travel costs).Any of my services are available across the UK, including bridal makeup, special occasions, Asian bridal
makeup, make up lessons, workshops and any other makeup packages you may require.â
⢠When was the product made? â28 October 2014â
⢠Images
⢠The images within this double page spread, I found that all three shots on the right hand side of the double page spread are taken
within a professional studio, unlike the polaroid image (left) has the makeup artist Gail Spooner. This might have been done to
market/advertise and network the makeup artist. I noted that all the images are medium close up shots this was done to perhaps show
the makeup skills used and talked about in the article. However the image of âGail Spoonerâ on the left is a more naturalistic image
probably taken by herself, similar to a âtalentâ headshot, used in the media industry, this might have been done to differentiate
between the author and the models used. The effects used on the images are different, some use a naturalistic filters or black and
white images are sepia. The lighting among the image of the cosmetics and models are extremely artificial to give a glossy effect to
appeal to the audience. I also noted that all the images have annotation around them, talking about how to use them, similar to
diagrams. The Mise En Scene of the double page spread shows a colour scheme that matches the colours of the products, to show
contingency throughout out the double page spread so that it is more appealing to the eye.
⢠Text
⢠Within this double page spread I liked the use of language examples of the specific vocabulary that is used such as âcleanserâ,
âExfoliateâ and âtonerâ. These words are specific to makeup and the beauty genre. The colours within this DPS are very stereotypical
girly, .e.g. baby pinks, grey beige, This would have been done appeal to the audience, which is most likely to be girls. The article also
uses check lists so that the audience does not get lost or bored throughout the text. The use of number helps this, and is also applicable
for the audience for the audience to use at home.
⢠Fonts
⢠The fonts within this double page spread are genre specific, for example magazines such as vogue, cosmopolitan use fonts similar to
âDidotâ. Theyâre classic and something the audience can automatically make links to the type of magazine it will be alongside the image
with it. I noted that the title font and the article fonts are different, This might have been done so that the audience can read the article
without difficulty, as the font used in the titles might be difficult to read in big paragraphs. I also noticed that the font changed in the
titles in different places .i.e. the âTried and testedâ section shows a different font. This might have been done to change the piece up a
little.
⢠Audience appeal
⢠Overall I feel that the double page spread is something that my target audience might find attractive to look at and be appealed too.

6. What is the product?
This product is a front cover of a magazine, consisting of professional makeup tips, professional images, and tutorials of how to do makeup
at home. The reason why I picked this image was due to my subject matter of my FMP, this is something similar to what I want to do, but I
will add my own spin to it.
Who made it and when was it made?
Key Publishing Group-Home of make-up artists magazine and IMATS, 12808 NE St Vancouver WA. Published 2014.
Image-Within this front cover of âMake-up Artistâ You see two models, Both from different ethnic backgrounds. This might have been
done to show case that the makeup can suit different skin tones, and that the magazines is âpolitically correctâ. This is important and
something I will apply in my own production as it expands the target audience and hypothetically more sales. I also noticed that the main
image was not taken in a professional studio but what looked like a outdoor/garden setting. This might have been done to represent a
mystical, fairytale imagery, therefore the Mise En Scene has to match the overall feel of the imagery.
Angle and Effect
The angles of the photo shows a head to create direct mode of address with the audience, this is essential in front cover of a magazine
because it causes the audience to engage with magazine and intrigues them. The effect of the front cover images is minimal, I thought that
perhaps that saturation of the images were dulled to accentuate the makeup features. I would have presumed that the models would have
been airbrushed during the Photoshop editing process.
Lighting and colour
One half image the blonde model is made to look other worldly, and composed to look black and white, and almost dull lighting, this might
have been done to emphasize the pops of colour on the cheekbones and eyes etc. Whereas the brown haired model is overly saturated,
brighter and seem to more alive, this is ironic as the images in my opinion represent life and death with the use of colour black and gold.
Props-
The props used within the images such as the veil on both models add dimensions to the picture, so that it adds things for the audience to
enjoy and to potentially make links with the content of the magazine.
Text and font-
Obviously âMakeup artistâ stands out from all other text on the page, as it represents the purpose of the magazine and is essentially telling
the audience the content of the magazine. In the tag line above the main title states â114 pages of inspiration our most everâ (in bold)
again this just entices the audience the read on. I liked how the magazine used a little text throughout the front cover emphasize the
purpose of the magazine (the makeup on the models). The font used is similar to something you might see in Vogue or
Cosmopolitan,(Didot) this will have been to keep the codes and conventions of a fashion magazine.

8. ⢠What is the product?
⢠This product is a professional makeup brands website, âJeffree Star â The reason why I picked this as I felt this is something I
could create myself. This could be done on wixx.com
⢠I decided to look at a beauty/makeup reviewer and makeup brand pioneer Jeffree Star. Because I found it to be ideal for
what I wanted to include in my own production. As I want to include makeup tips, makeup reviews and expertise. I also
wanted to see his website, as I felt this is something I will create alongside my own magazine.
⢠Fonts and colour scheme-
⢠Within this search bar I liked use of bright pink as I felt it complemented his brand and his personality. It would also appeal
to his target audience as a stereotypically girls will be his main consumers/viewers. I also liked the colour white used with
his font to stand out against the bright colour so that audience could easier direct the website. In the corner of his search
bad you see his âjeffree Star Cosmeticsâ with his iconic star symbol. This will have been done to add his own personal stamp
to distinguish himself from other makeup producers. Below the pink bar, you see a website directory, I also appreciated how
this had been put together as his consumers can easily work around his website and therefore user friendly this also is
something I want to apply to my own websites If I create one.
⢠Images
⢠The image on the front of the website shows a male model Jeffree Star himself this important as he is endorsing his
products himself by putting on his own lipstick. I could see that the image itself had been taken in a studio set. He is sat on a
dentist chair to create an abstract images, to add something a little different to other existing brands. The angle used is a
medium long shot. This is was done to showcase the setting the makeup and of course the models.
⢠The overall colour scheme colour scheme of the imagery is baby pink and red. These ironically donât match each other. The
use of baby pink has connotations to âgirl nessâ. This is due to the fact this product will be aimed at females, so more a girly
colour to appeal to the target audience, The contrasting red colour of the jump suit worn by Jeffree star stands out from the
image so will want to draw attention to it. This is will cause the product to be more noticeable and will ultimately achieve
the aim to advertising the lipstick.

10. ⢠Images
⢠I selected this fanzine because I felt the images were simplistic however, very suited to the genre on which this
fanzine is based on, (The doors) a band, I liked how the images had a wide range of different locations for the
images, i.e. the front cover image to me seems in a studio image, as it was an extreme close up in front of black
back drop, with directed mode of address which is very effective for capturing the audiences attention and very
simple to achieve myself. I also like how the double page spread image took over the full two pages with text
placed on top, it is clear to me that the image is in a naturalistic setting, and caught off guard. I like how both
images worked together well with the black/sepia edit over the top. The overall photography is very simple but
effective. On the main front cover image I liked how the simple white font was placed over the top of the face Jim
Morrison, I felt this gave the front cover an edge and something I feel I could easily achieve myself.
⢠Fonts/Colour scheme
⢠I liked the font style as it corresponded with the bands album font, I felt it was eye-catching and brought in the
attention of the audience with a pop of bright red to add a little excitement to the mainly black and white images
within its font, On the double page spread again it was kept to a very simple colour scheme, with bright white font
colour, however to change it up a bit I liked how the use of different format and font types to stop the fanzine
seem interesting.
⢠Subject and content
⢠This fanzine is covering the band âdoorsâ however I donât particularly enjoy or listen to this band however I noted
that a lot the content contained lyrics and quotes from songs and band members, This would have been to ensure
the audience is kept knowledgeable with content from the fanzine. I found that the content had mainly details
about the bands different eras, and factual content for fans of the band to me this is something I could do myself
if I were to do something like this for my own work. The writing style is something similar to a biography.
11.
12. ⢠Images- I picked this particular fanzine as I like the animation characters on the front, I believe this
is done to create a comic looking booklet, The use of different scary characters, behind the
presumed âreaderâ informs the reader of what they might expect in the fanzine. These have been
either hand drawn and scanned into Photoshop or animated on a software, This is something I
could explore in my own work. In the corner of the fanzine you can see logo with âECâ which shows
the company, this use of graphics is also something I would like to include in my own work as I feel
it adds a sense of professionalism. As for the images on the double page spread the colour scheme
of the images were much more simplistic, perhaps this was done to ensure the audience focused
on the content/text in the horror stories rather than the images, however the images were still very
details along side the texts. And often have text to coincide with images, which creates text image
cohesion. This is something I want to include in my own work.
⢠Font/Content- I found that a lot of the text was in a very formal font perhaps this was done to keep
the reader engaged to the stories and to show that writing style is of a graphic content therefore
written in traditional font. However the layout of the text is more advanced as it spreads around
different images, and put in different places to stop the reader being bored and to make the double
page spreads interesting, the actual spacing between the letters are close, this might have been
done so the author can include more content on a page. However the cover has much less text on it
but uses different fonts for example the title is bright yellow and uses the words âTerrorâ in a font
that is visually related to the horror genre, this would have been done to catch the audiences
attention. I liked the colour scheme across the front cover as the white and yellow were eye
catching to an audience. This is something I will use in my own work.
13.
14. ⢠The reason why I picked this existing product was because the front cover popped out to me as I felt the
main image was very achievable as this shot was clearly taken in a studio, this is different to all of my other
products as it seems more modern and perhaps easier to do myself the actual photograph itself stuck out
to me as its new and refreshing and would most likely stick out in the readers mind. I also like the red and
white backdrop behind the artist as it corresponded with the title cover colour scheme because the author
stuck to three main colours which kept the front cover seem more simplistic and made the overall fanzine
seem professional and very well put together, I also liked the old style font look in the main title, I felt it
match the genre of music this fanzine was trying to represent, and would certainly catch the eye of any
audience. I also liked how the red block behind the tile âL.A Recordâ made the title stand out even more
with a simple use of Photoshop can improve the look of a front cover. I also liked how the smaller texts
where white and placed over the top of the artist, I found this was a creative use of the photography and
the colours in the image. The layout of the small print made the audience read in order of the articles, this
was a simple way of showing the contents of the fanzine.
⢠Within the double page spread I liked the use of spacing across the DPS, For example first page has an
interesting graphic/cartoon showing the group De La Soul. I liked how the images of the members were
morphed and edited into different colours, this is something I would like to add to my own work if
possible, Other graphics such as pizza, pyramids and flowers were also added to convey to the colourful,
fun imagery on the double page spread.
⢠The layout of the double page spread was relatively simple in comparison to the previous existing
products it followed an article like layout, with columns with small spacing in-between the letters,
however there is a large gap between the bulk of the writing and the title, which is in the same font but
much larger with slightly smaller text below
