WHAT’S MEANT BY PLASTIC??? :
PLASTIC
ROADS
A REVOLUTION IN
BUILDING ROADS!!!! :
• Plastic roads are roads made either entirely of plastic or of composites of plastic with other materials.
Plastic roads are different from standard roads in the respect that standard roads are made from asphalt
concrete, which consists of mineral aggregates and asphalt. Currently, there are no records of regular roads
made purely of plastic.[1] Plastic composite roads, however, have existed and demonstrate characteristics
superior to regular asphaltconcrete roads; specifically, they show better wear resistance.[2
INNOVATION IN
BUILDING ROADS :
PLASTIC ROADS
PLASTIC
ROADS IN
BANGALORE :
• Rubbish dumping in Bangalore is reaching crisis levels as rapid economic growth, overcrowdingand
poor urban planningcombine.
• India’s Silicon Valley produces some 5,000 tonnes of waste a day, of which 1,500 tonnes are plastic. Only
25% goes for recycling and the rest is dumped in land fill or burnt, generating greenhouse gas
emissions.
CONCEPT INVOLVED IN PLASTIC
ROADS:
• Laying down one km of normal bitumen road takes 10 tonnes of bitumen, while the use of recycled
plastic can build a 3.75-meter wide road by utilizing 9 tonnes of bitumen and 1 tonne of plastic waste
for every km. Interestingly, 1 tonne of bitumen costs INR 50,000 to INR 60,000 (in India). So for every 1
kilometer, you get to save thousands of rupees.
•
• Besides, 1 tonne of plastic waste equates to 10 Lacs carry bags and hence people are required to sell off
the plastic which they use for domestic purposes. This has even led to thousands of people getting
involved in collecting and shredding plastic waste.
ADVANTAGES
OF PLASTIC
ROADS :
ADVANTAGES:
• • The project claims that the plastic roads will feature:
• • 70% faster road construction
• • Dual use of hollow space for cables, pipes or water storage
• • Little or no maintenance
• • 3 x longer expected lifetime of the roads
• • 4 times lighter than the traditional road structure
•
MAIN ADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC
ROADS:
• A lightweight prefabricated construction
• Faster construction (months shorter) and less maintenance time
• Higher quality and a longer lifespan (homogeneous and prefabricated)
• Little to no maintenance required. The material is virtually impervious to conditions
such as the weather and weeds.
• The innovation is considerably more sustainable. The goal is to make the PlasticRoad
out of 100% recycled plastic and to make it fully reusable. It is perfectly in line with the
Cradle to Cradle philosophy and the principles of the circular economy.
• Double use of space. The hollow space in the design can be used to store water or as
space for cables and pipes.
• The possibility of constant (traffic) safety and water drainage
• Everything on and around the road can be prefabricated (road markings, guardrails)
• The concept offers opportunities for further innovation. Examples include solar heated
roads, light poles and traffic loop sensors.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF
PLASTIC ROADS:
CONCLUSION:
• Plastic is a non-biodegradable waste and using it as for road construction can actually solve various
problems at a global level. With the advancement of technology and engineering techniques, nothing
seems to be impossible. Till now, it’s quite clear that human has ruined the environment in every
possible way through the overuse of technology and now it would be interesting to watch as to how he
uses the same technology to fix the problems that he created.
