3. Location Recce
For my location Recce I have outlined the
potential hazards of taking the pictures
needed for the magazine, I have added
pictures of these hazards and outlined the
risks involved. By doing this it allowed me
to make sure that the photographers would
have a clear understanding on the
locations. I also needed to ask for
permission to use two of the locations, I
have added into the ‘permission needed’
section who I would need to contact. I have
then contacted them and had a signed
permission form sent back (left). As well as
by looking at the equipment lists I have
asked permission from the location to
borrow some of their equipment (below).
4. Location Recce – Gaining permission
Location
Before using any locations to take photos I needed to see if any permission was needed before taking
pictures. This could include making sure not to break laws against trespassing in public or private property. It
also included booking the studio with the photography teacher to make sure that it was free at the specific
time that I wanted to use it. I also needed to ask permission because I needed to make sure that the owners
of the locations were aware that the images would be used for media publication.
I asked permission in the suitable locations by permission slip, this allowed me to receive the signature of
the owner in hard copy. It also allowed me to be able to make sure that the owners of the locations were
fully aware of all the details that the images involved.
Equipment
When taking the images I planned to use some of the equipment that was already in the studio, before
using it I needed to gain permission from the owner. This protected us and the owner if any damage was
caused. It also allowed the photographers to make sure that they were protected and right to use the
equipment.
I also gained permission to use the equipment through a permission slip, this stated that any damage that
was caused by the photographers or subject would be paid for immediately. It also stated everything that
the was going to be used. Similarly to the location permission slip I told the owner that the images would be
used for media publication.
5. Location Recce- Conducting an interview
Contacting the artist
Before we could conduct the interview I
needed to contact the interview to ensure
they wanted to appear as the cover star. As
well as, when they were available for the
interview to be conducted.
Conducting the interview
This image was taken when the interview was
being conducted. Here you can see the artist
and interviewer sitting down. This picture would
have been uploaded to the social networking
sites before the release date of the magazine.
This is because it would entice more readers.
6. Ethical and Legal
Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
To protect the employees of the magazine I will need to run risk assessments on all stages of producing the magazine to make sure that no
employees can be harmed. By running a risk assessment on each stage I can make sure that no risk is missed. Examples of the type of risks that
I will need to look at is if the different locations that the employees may visit are safe or if the equipment is working properly and at no risk of
hurting anyone.
As seen in my location recce I have been able to spot and evaluate any risks in the process of taking photos for the magazine. I have then
included images for the photographers to be able to see the risks and prevent any accidents happening. During the production process I will use
a similar method on each stage.
Copyright Laws within Print Media
Copyright is a legal right to allow the original the author or artist the right to publish, create, perform or print a certain piece of work. This
protects the work from anyone else copying or duplicating it. When producing my magazine I need to check the copyright of content that I am
going to include in my magazine. So if the content that I use in my magazine is made by someone else I need to ask their permission before
using it. By doing this it results in making sure that no regulations are breached.
Another reason why I will need to look into copyright when producing my magazine is because I may need to copyright the content that is
made. This makes sure that no one duplicates the content that we have made. Our copyright procedures will be clear in our magazine at the
bottom of the contents page.
Intellectual Property Rights
To protect the content of my magazine I will need to use a few different types of intellectual property to make sure that no one copies my work.
I will use Trade marks protection to make sure that my logo/ mast head, strapline etc. are protected from anyone trying to copy them. On the
written content and photos in my magazine I will use Copyright to make sure that no one tries to copy the work or claim it as theirs.
To use the logos of the social networks on the front cover of my magazine then I will need to buy intellectual property from the businesses. By
looking at the guidelines of using the logos for the different social networking sites, they allow businesses to use the logo as long as they do not
modify the logo in any way. Whilst also making sure to use it in the right context, as I believe that my magazine is using the logo in the
appropriate manner and not modifying the logo in any way I believe that my magazine will have the permission to use the logos on the front
page.
The Intellectual Property rights will be passed from the ‘inventor’ to the publisher, this is because there will be a contract to make sure that all
the content is protected and all the rights go to the publisher. The publisher will buy all the rights for all the content this makes it easier to
apply for the rights all together.
For the copyright of the content I would need to make sure to add the copyright logo to the page so that it is clear that its copyrighted. As well
as on the bottom of the contents page I will put a disclaimer that all the content is copyrighted so that the readers are fully aware that the
content is protected.

7. Ethical and Legal
Filing a complaint form (IPSO)
This is the form for filing a complaint to the PCC on the form the complainer needs to fill in what they are complaining about, if they’ve been in
contact with the publisher, as well as the name and date of the publication. At the bottom of the form they also have the option to add an
image if needed. After filling this form section of the form in there is another section to the form. This is where the person filing the complaint
needs to choose which part of The Editors Code they believe that the publisher has breached. The next step in the filing a complaints form is to
give your details to the Commission so they can contact you when they are dealing with your complaint if this is needed. The last part of the
form is a opportunity to review the complaint that you have made to make sure it is as accurate as possible.
Press Complaints Commission (PCC)
When producing the magazine the Editors Code needs to be taken into consideration. In the Editors Code it quotes “a duty to maintain the
highest professional standards” this connotes that all the information that is collected from subscribers needs to be dealt with in a professional
manner to make sure that there is no regulations broken and the customers have a good experience. This also connotes that the magazine
needs to make sure that all articles about individuals are written in a professional manner so that they do not ‘defame’ the individual. This also
links to the quote of ‘respect the rights of the individual” this protects the rights of individuals that are in the public interest to make sure that
they are always safe.
As well as editors need to make sure to read through the content that is published online and in the magazine, this helps to make sure that it is
always appropriate and reaches the Editors Code regulations. Finally the magazine needs to make sure to co-operate with the PCC with
complaints that could be made by content.
Intellectual Press Standards Organisation (IPSO)
Filing a complaint
For the public to be able to file a valid complaint with the press complaints commission they need to reach the code of practise whilst filing it.
The process of filing a complaint is to send a email or letter. To highlight their point even further the press complaints commission requests a
valid article of the media that is being complained about, if there is such a thing. Then they need to make sure to add the name of the
publication and the date too, this helps the press complaints commission to be able to find the article themselves and study it. Then the person
complaining would also need to give a brief summary of what is wrong with the article and how they believe that the article e has breached the
Code of Practise.

9. LO2 Conclusion
For this learning outcome I assessed the risks when collecting the content for the magazine, as well as
the legal and ethical issues once published.
I started by producing a location recce for taking the photos for my magazine. The location recce helps
to highlight the potential hazards when taking the photos for the magazine. It also highlights the types
of props that the photographer may need and the location of which the photo will be taken. The
location recce also highlights the permission needed to take the photos in certain locations, by
highlighting this it helped to ensure that the photographer and subject was safe to be at the location
and the magazine was protected to publish the photos. In the location recce I also needed to ask the
permission to use some of the equipment needed for the photos in the studio, this made sure that the
owner was ok with the photographer using the equipment. As well as, it also helped the owner to
make sure that their equipment was protected from damage.
The final step to the location recce was asking the permission of the interviewer if they would star in
the magazine. I chose to do this by text as I felt that it would give a quicker reply than email.
Before producing/ publishing the magazine I also needed to be aware of the ethical and legal issues
involved in media publishing. I looked at intellectual property, copyright laws, as well as health and
safety. I also looked at the editors code and how people can file complaints to IPSO. By doing this it
made me aware of the content that could and shouldn’t be included in the magazine.
By looking at these risks and issues it helped to make sure that the content within the magazine
reached the correct standard that is expected of a media publication.
