3. Potential Hazards
The potential hazards while taking photos:
• Flash – Before taking the photos I must be careful that I inform them that
there might be some flashes while the photos are being taken to get
better lighting. These could not only hurt the eyes of the model if they
aren’t expecting a flash but also the model may have epilepsy and an flash
could cause some serious health problems.
• Tables and Chairs – As I was taking pictures in a study room there were a
lot of table and chairs which could have been a tripping hazard, so I was
able to move a table and desk so john could stand without having anything
in his way.
• Hazard’s outside - was when I was taking the pictures outside for the front
cover I had to be aware of the hazards which may have affected your
safety. If it was raining then the equipment could have been damaged, so
in advance I looked up the weather forecast and made sure the day which
we planned to take the photos was one which it wasn’t predicted to rain
and if it did I would have to stop the photoshoot and plan it for another
day. Also, I couldn’t just do the photoshoot straight after any rain as the
ground would be slippery which could cause accidents by falling over.
5. Location Recce photos
I took the pictures of John for my Double page spread in the
silent study room. I chose this location as in the morning it
wasn’t busy and it was just john and I in the room which
meant I had enough time to think about the photo I wanted
and where he needed to be. In the room there is a plain white
wall. I chose this it be the background of the image as it is
plain so when it came to editing the photo is was easy to get
rid of the background and use the rubber tool to remove
background which wasn’t deleted by the quick removal tool.
The room also has very good lighting which was good as the
images where bright and came out well on with my phone
camera which has a bad flash on it. This made the photos
clearer.
6. Location Permission
Before taking the photos I asked my head
teacher, Mr Mitchell, if I had permission to take
pictures outside of the school chapel. As shown
in the screen shot of the e-mail.
7. Risk Assessment
I tried to contact my magazine of inspiration,
Mixmag, to gather information on what they do
conduct risk assessments.
8. Hazards at the work place - HSE
Most accidents occur when printing the actual magazine. According to
the HSE website there are 27% while manually handling, 22% by trips
and slips and 22% by machinery.
For my magazine I will make sure that the work space is always tidy
and clear of any rubbish. So this should reduce the amount of slips and
trip. Also the staff will be trained on how to use machinery so there
should be minimal accidents to people while using machinery as they
should know how it all works and the dangers of not using it properly.
Staff will also have the correct equipment such as gloves and box
cutter so that it should reduce the amount of manual accidents in the
work place.
There is also a risk that there could a fire as paper is very flammable.
So the staff will be trained on how to deal with a fire, so that they
know where fire escapes are. There will also be fire extinguishers to
stop small fires.

9. Health and safety at work act
This piece of legislation give the employer’s of a business or company
a right to comply to what the act says they must do for there
employees. They must provide and maintain safety equipment with
safely working systems. For my magazine I will have to check all of my
equipment so it is safe to use to comply with the act. The act also
makes an employer comply to have a safe place of employment and a
safe working environment. For me this will mean I have to make sure
the office where people work is safe.
Employee’s also have responsibilities such as; they make take care of
their own health and safety and that of other persons. For example
some employees may be volunteers in case of a fire they direct
everyone outside of the building. They must also comply to co-
operating with their employers and not interfere with anything
provided in the interest of health and safety .

10. IPSO
The IPSO will contact me as the creator of the magazine if there are any
complaints from a member of the public. Then we will directly try and
sought out the issue which they have about the magazine. These issues
may occur because they break the Editors’ Code of Practice. For
example my magazine will have to be accurate in what is published
which may mislead people into thinking and believing false claims as a
result in reading my magazine. If there is anything inaccurate in my
magazine then I will have to correct it promptly.
They also deal with media harassment so if journalists from my
magazine may do this which they need to be aware when they can be
classes as harassing someone.
The IPSO also provide a hotline for journalists for which if they feel that
they are being pressured to break the Editors code of practice, they can
ring the IPSO .

11. Privacy
My magazine will also have to deal with privacy
matter when reporting on peoples lives and I
must understand the Editors Codes of Practice
so that I do not violate the law. If I decided to
include any personal information I would have
to gain fully informed consent to be sure that I
have the permission to use and publish what
ever personal information which I have
gathered.
12. Legal and Ethical
I would need to as a magazine make sure the
content which I wrote about was ethical and
wouldn’t encourage controversial issues like, if
taking drugs are good. So, in my magazine
interview with John Allen I didn’t include
anything which involved controversy, especially
not drugs as it has an influence on younger
people which might think about taking drugs if it
is promoted as positive in my magazine.
13. Example of Ethical issue
Mixmag were put into an ethical
issue as in one issue of their
magazine they asked people ‘What
drugs have you taken?’. This survey
asked people about what illegal
drugs do they take. This survey was
conducted in the UK and America
people between the ages of 18 – 25.
This is a ethical issue as people who
read the magazine who don’t take
drugs might feel like that they need
to do it as it is mentioned in their
magazine. This could mean that
Mixmag looks like they promote the
use of illegal drugs and this could be
offensive material to some people
which would need to be censored in
a magazine with a target audience
of young readers.

14. Editor’s Code of Practice
The content of my magazine must meet with the
Editor’s Codes of Practice. This means that I must
only put the truth into my magazine and not bend
and twist information to make it seem like a person
is saying something else, so with my interview with
John Allen I must make sure that I have written
what he intended to say.
The Editors code of Practice also includes Privacy,
opportunity to reply, harassment and lots more. To
make sure that my magazine doesn’t breach any of
these rules at the end of production and ideally
throughout the content will be checked .
16. Using Social Media logos
Twitter: You can use the logo and the words
‘twitter’ on my magazine and website. Although I
do have to abide by some rules. I cannot
manipulate the logo in anyway, I cannot create or
use a button which links to twitter so I has to be
their own logo. I also have to capitalize the ‘T’ in
Twitter and Tweet.
Facebook: I can use the Facebook like button on my
website as a plug in and in advertisement only. The
‘f’ Facebook logo must be link to their login page
and the ‘f’ logo cannot be modified in any way.

common-social-media-platform-logos/
17. Intellectual Property
This is a law which protects peoples creations for example
the creation of my magazine. This includes patterns,
copyright and trademarks. This isn’t the idea alone but a
physical creation.
To protect my work I will have use multiple type of
protection as one type of protection can only cover a
certain amount of intellectual property. A copyright will
only cover my actual magazine and a trade mark will
protect the name and logo of my magazine.
By protecting my magazine it will make it easier to take
legal action against anyone which copies or steals it. For
my magazine it will include; name, logo, what I write and
images.

18. LO2 – Conclusion
After finishing the research into how a magazine
is created and all the legal codes which need to
be followed while making a magazine I was able
to gain the knowledge of what was allowed in a
magazine. In the LO3 I will be able to start
creating the basis of the magazine with photos
and software.
