2. FOLLOWS CONVENTIONS
One convention of magazine covers is the 3 colour rule, this
is where magazines stick to using 3 base colours in order to
perpetuate a sleek and organised look. I have used the
colours red, black and grey. I chose the colour Red, not only
because it fits with the colour of the film title, but also
because of the connotations of danger and blood, which fits
with the horror theme of the magazine. I used the colour
black because of the negative connotations of fear and
death, which again fits with the horror film theme. I chose
to use the colour grey because of the unsettling and
mysterious connotations. These three colours work well
together because the blacks and reds contrast well
together, so the text is easy to read and differentiate.
3. FOLLOWS CONVENTIONS
Another convention i have followed is the use of a
MastHead. The sans serif font is a staple of indie horror
magazines. Moreover, the MastHead has a bleeding effect,
the mixture of creepy effects and mastheads is another
convention of indie horror magazines. I have used a solid
black font, die to the connotations of fear and death, but
also because the solid black colour stands out from the light
grey background, and will draw a potential buyers eyes
straight away. Another film magazine convention that i
have followed is placing “Magazine” on the line below, this
is so that it does not draw away from the name of the
magazine.
4. FOLLOWS CONVENTIONS
Another convention of film magazines that i have followed
is displaying the month and year as a type of issue number,
this is a convention followed by many film magazines.
Another conventions of magazines i have followed is
displaying the barcode on the front of the magazine
Another convention that i have used is the main cover line
being at the bottom of the page, on top of the main image
and much larger than the rest of the coverlines.
Another convention of magazines that i have used is the use
of a Puff in order to draw in potential readers and
incentivise them to purchase the magazine due to the free
gifts offered. Having this puff as a bar across the top of the
magazine is a convention of film magazines.
5. FOLLOWS CONVENTIONS
Another convention of magazines is I have used secondary
coverlines. I have separated these into two lists, the one on
the right features 3 stories with small descriptions of what
the article is about, and the other list is just a series of film
names, which feature in articles inside the magazines. This
splitting the secondary coverlines is a convention of most
media magazines, whether they be film or music. This is to
highlight specific articles which may be interesting and
which may convince people to purchase the magazine.
Moreover i have used two contrasting colours to separate
the names of these articles, this is to stop the names of
articles blending into one big wall of text and to keep the
magazine cover aesthetically pleasing. This is another
6. FOLLOWS CONVENTIONS
Another convention of magazines that i have used is a
single main image using a direct mode of address, this is
typically used to create a sense of personal connection,
however in this case it is to create a sense of dread and
horror, which fits well with the horror theme of the
magazine.
7. CHALLENGES CONVENTIONS
Typically the main image on magazine front covers features a
single coloured matte black edited in background. I chose to use a
grey background and blend the images, which created an effect
that looks as if the antagonist has a key light aimed on him and he
is merging out of the wall, i chose to challenge this convention as i
wanted to avoid the boring usual single coloured matte
background and wanted to create a creepy effect with my image
which i believed would better fit my indie horror magazine.
Traditionally, Magazine covers feature very little variation in their
fonts, this is in order to create a house style, that is rigid and
formal, however i want to create an insane jumbled look on the
cover of my magazine as i believed that this fits the indie horror
tone that i was attempting to create for my magazine.
