(PLANNING) ASSIGN 26 -
INDIVIDUAL PITCH
BY VINCENT MENDY
CHOICE OF HORROR SUB-GENRE
(PARANORMAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL)
• MES EN SCENE – Costumes, Props,
Make up are all usually easily
accessible and low-cost
• Location – Typically in houses or in
abandoned buildings
• Allows a large medium of creativity
• Visual effects enhance the
authenticity of the narrative
5 FILMS IN THIS GENRE
• The Possession (2012)
• The Woman (2011)
• We Are What We Are (2013)
• Shutter (2004)
• Paranormal Activity (2009)
• Howl (2015)
CONVENTIONS -
• Friends or family members who are ones to least expect evil, become
possessed. ~questions expectations of innocence
• Children/mostly females are usually the antagonist in this genre. (The
Woman, Shutter)
• Methods of killing - usually done by antagonist and are unknown/not
presented directly. ~enigma
• To scare the audience with their deepest fears, thus creating.
phycological warfare for the audience.
• Setting – house or somewhere that a person would feel secure.
MY IDEA
• Protagonist, starting character is a school boy in a history class
• 2 other class mates are in the 3 shot with him ( main three characters)
• Learning about a possession box called Diebbuk radio (variation of
Dybbuk box)
• Characters mock the book, then class ends.
• End of school day, trio meet up in woods.
• Based on rumours there's a valuable item in an abandoned
shed/building.
• Trio decide to go find it
• They get to the shed, they find a bunch of old/useless items.
• 2 characters loose interest
• Protagonist hears some kind of whispering, at first thinks it’s an animal at
the back of the shed.
• They ask the 2 characters if they hear it or not, they say that the
protagonist is crazy and should go home.
• Protagonist persists, the music get louder till he found something. An old
radio.
• As soon as the protagonist touches it strange music stops.
• Dusk is falling at this point.
• They scream ouch! as the radio has cut them, there is little blood mostly
dripping from the radio.
• The other 2 characters don’t see the cut of the blood, its only seen from
the POV of the protagonist.
• The trio inspects it. The battery is dead and it doesn’t work. One the the
characters toss it away.
• When the radio lands, whispers come back but they turn into screams. The
protagonist falls in pain and then passes out. During this there is a slow
motion shot of the 2 other characters running to his aid.
• Protagonist wakes up into their bed at home a couple mornings later
during the weekend (specific time is TBA)
• The protagonist appears slightly concussed but more confused and
displaced.
• They decide to call the other 2 characters, neither pick up. Protagonist
becomes concerned and goes to check on them at their houses.
• As they walk past certain places, they visualises flashes.
• They seem like events involving the other 2 characters.
• There are also a series of “missing persons reports stuck along fences and
posts.
• They become more and more frequent as he gets closer to the shed that
they were last together at.
• The flashes only show fractions of the event that happened the last night
they remember.
• Eventually the protagonist passes the shed and then the whispering starts
again whilst showing the full flash back of the murder. Gets louder and
louder as the protagonist gets to the shed and opens the door.
• The protagonist is extremely shaken with disbelief and trembles when
opening the door
• The 2 characters are dead in the shed.
• Protagonist was actually the antagonist
• Fini
• The character type of the protagonist will be much like the personality of
Mr Hyde and Dr Jekyll, as well as a Warewolf.
MEETING CONVENTIONS
• Motive/object lead to someone becoming .
• Protagonist – is someone who was trusted.
• Method of killing is not clear. ~ enigma
• Settings will be in school, on the street and then in a garage.
NARRATIVE ENIGMAS
• un-clear events cause tension for the audience?
• Why did the protagonist pass out?
• What has happened to the protagonists friends?
• What weapon was used?
• Why were they possessed?
To create a strong sense of enigma, I want the killer only to be revealed at the end of the OTS but in an
unclear/in-direct form. That way the audience is able to interpret how they would like would allow them to
relate to the narrative more.
TARGETS THAT I WANT TO MEET
• Clear genre classification to the audience.
• Tense and enigmatic scenes.
• Convincing visual effects. (to distinguish the versions of the protagonist – eyes turn red)
• Location for: in school to host the class room scene, on the street and a shed/abandoned building
• Convincing make-up, props and costumes.
• Include a wide range of technical shots and editing techniques to make the OTS look convincing and
professional.
• The narrative to be clear enough to understand but not predictable.
I feel that my idea is achievable due to it not requiring a lot of props. The main limitation that I
identify would be that one of the scenes are dependant on natural light (dusk scene outside the
garage). Dusk falls very quick into night time, so filming those parts will be a difficulty.

CHOICE OF HORROR SUB-GENRE (PARANORMAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL) • MES EN SCENE – Costumes, Props, Make up are all usually easily accessible and low-cost • Location – Typically in houses or in abandoned buildings • Allows a large medium of creativity • Visual effects enhance the authenticity of the narrative
  • 3. 5 FILMS IN THIS GENRE • The Possession (2012) • The Woman (2011) • We Are What We Are (2013) • Shutter (2004) • Paranormal Activity (2009) • Howl (2015)
  • 4. CONVENTIONS - • Friends or family members who are ones to least expect evil, become possessed. ~questions expectations of innocence • Children/mostly females are usually the antagonist in this genre. (The Woman, Shutter) • Methods of killing - usually done by antagonist and are unknown/not presented directly. ~enigma • To scare the audience with their deepest fears, thus creating. phycological warfare for the audience. • Setting – house or somewhere that a person would feel secure.
  • 5. MY IDEA • Protagonist, starting character is a school boy in a history class • 2 other class mates are in the 3 shot with him ( main three characters) • Learning about a possession box called Diebbuk radio (variation of Dybbuk box) • Characters mock the book, then class ends. • End of school day, trio meet up in woods. • Based on rumours there's a valuable item in an abandoned shed/building. • Trio decide to go find it • They get to the shed, they find a bunch of old/useless items. • 2 characters loose interest • Protagonist hears some kind of whispering, at first thinks it’s an animal at the back of the shed. • They ask the 2 characters if they hear it or not, they say that the protagonist is crazy and should go home. • Protagonist persists, the music get louder till he found something. An old radio. • As soon as the protagonist touches it strange music stops. • Dusk is falling at this point. • They scream ouch! as the radio has cut them, there is little blood mostly dripping from the radio. • The other 2 characters don’t see the cut of the blood, its only seen from the POV of the protagonist. • The trio inspects it. The battery is dead and it doesn’t work. One the the characters toss it away. • When the radio lands, whispers come back but they turn into screams. The protagonist falls in pain and then passes out. During this there is a slow motion shot of the 2 other characters running to his aid. • Protagonist wakes up into their bed at home a couple mornings later during the weekend (specific time is TBA) • The protagonist appears slightly concussed but more confused and displaced. • They decide to call the other 2 characters, neither pick up. Protagonist becomes concerned and goes to check on them at their houses. • As they walk past certain places, they visualises flashes. • They seem like events involving the other 2 characters. • There are also a series of “missing persons reports stuck along fences and posts. • They become more and more frequent as he gets closer to the shed that they were last together at. • The flashes only show fractions of the event that happened the last night they remember. • Eventually the protagonist passes the shed and then the whispering starts again whilst showing the full flash back of the murder. Gets louder and louder as the protagonist gets to the shed and opens the door. • The protagonist is extremely shaken with disbelief and trembles when opening the door • The 2 characters are dead in the shed. • Protagonist was actually the antagonist • Fini • The character type of the protagonist will be much like the personality of Mr Hyde and Dr Jekyll, as well as a Warewolf.
  • 6. MEETING CONVENTIONS • Motive/object lead to someone becoming . • Protagonist – is someone who was trusted. • Method of killing is not clear. ~ enigma • Settings will be in school, on the street and then in a garage.
  • 7. NARRATIVE ENIGMAS • un-clear events cause tension for the audience? • Why did the protagonist pass out? • What has happened to the protagonists friends? • What weapon was used? • Why were they possessed? To create a strong sense of enigma, I want the killer only to be revealed at the end of the OTS but in an unclear/in-direct form. That way the audience is able to interpret how they would like would allow them to relate to the narrative more.
  • 8. TARGETS THAT I WANT TO MEET • Clear genre classification to the audience. • Tense and enigmatic scenes. • Convincing visual effects. (to distinguish the versions of the protagonist – eyes turn red) • Location for: in school to host the class room scene, on the street and a shed/abandoned building • Convincing make-up, props and costumes. • Include a wide range of technical shots and editing techniques to make the OTS look convincing and professional. • The narrative to be clear enough to understand but not predictable. I feel that my idea is achievable due to it not requiring a lot of props. The main limitation that I identify would be that one of the scenes are dependant on natural light (dusk scene outside the garage). Dusk falls very quick into night time, so filming those parts will be a difficulty.
