Conventions in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
2. 2. Try to explain the connotations of your conventions such as the
font/animation/colour of text or the
connotation of the image. What genre is it and why? - Conner S
• Font – The font within this OTS is quite gothic. This is to
connote the possible themes within the film and credit the
cast without drawing attention away from the OTS itself.
• Animation – This is used to connote the possible themes.
There are many pictures that portray a woman being
abused and possibly attacked. This conveys a certain
mysterious and thriller-esque theme
• Colour – All of the colour in this OTS are either black or
white. This is also to connote the dark themes of this film.
3. 3. How does this compare to one of the OTS' that
you looked at in the starter? - Vincent
• The opening scenes for all the films in the starter all had footage from the
actual film, whereas the girl with the dragon tattoo uses CGI in the opening
scene.
• In all the films they used a music score, but they were all sounds that were
related to the film genre, in our film the use of rock music helps the audience
to have an insight of the chaotic/punk style type of film that it will be.
• The score was incidental as the scenes where synchronized with the music
score’s rhythm.
• Compared to Hackers, The Girl with the dragon tattoo is clearly a modernized
film. Due to the camera quality being clearer, the mes en scene (CGI took the
place of this). Hackers seems to be behind in technology techniques and
methods of portraying a story in comparison to The Girl with the dragon tattoo.
• The tempo of each of the OTS contrast one another, Hackers has much
slower tempo and the music score is chilled and mellow. On the counterrally
The Girl with the dragon tattoo is very fast paced.
• The narrative enigmas are much more subtle and simpler than the ones of The
Girl with the dragon tattoo where there are many CGI formations of Fire, Ink
and Ink formatted beings. Its clear that the purpose of each of these OTS are
far from one another.
• Narrative contrast one another. Hackers is about a boy who has now grown up
(portrayed through a time-ellipsis) is now returning back to the city that he was
once in thus this raises questions from the audience on the reasons for these
events. In The Girl with the dragon tattoo, the narrative is enigmatic thus
creating a strong force of enigma. However there are connotations of answers
through the CGI.
4. 4. Why does this OTS have the conventions you named in 1? - Vincent
• Credits given to the main people (Distribution companies,
Production companies, Main actors, Supporting actors, the
camera crew etc.…) involved in the film.
• Animations were used in the CGI, to give us an insight of the
nature of the film. They presented personifications of
potential characters/ events that may occur.
• Score-Music was used to create this chaotic mood and
atmosphere which again provides info more about the film.
• The theme was determined by the music score and the
visuals (CGI).
• The film title, identified as "The girl with the dragon tattoo".
• Intro to characters, male and female are introduced but their
identity are un-clear. This creates an enigmatic OTS scene.
6. 6. Are the conventions typical in films of the same
genre? – Josh S
• The conventions in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are typical in
films of the same genre.
• There is a lot of enigmas which relates back to the genre of
mystery/thriller.
• The visuals also help reveal this as it shows splashing ink and
swirling faces coming alive.
