5. Description:
Katla,also known as the major(Indian)carp is a fresh water fish in the
carp family cyprinidae.It is commonly found in rivers,lakes & ponds
body of katla fish is usually looking short.Attains sexual maturity at
an average age of two years.
 Head is comparatively bigger than their body.Mouth is wide and
cureved to up.
 The upper lip is thin but lower lip is thick.The back is more convex
than their belly.
 Upper Side of their body is dark gray colored and side part is silver
colored.

most distinguish feature of katla fish is its larger
lower jaw and this foreces its lower lip to be

11. Habitat & Biology
Katla is a eurythermal species that grows best at water
temperature between 25-32° c.The eggs are demersal
at first,gradually becoming buoyant.Early stage larvae
remain in surface & sub surface water are strongly
phototactic.the larvae begin to feed three days after
hatching.Catla attain maturity in its second year,
performing a spawning migration during the
monsoon season towards the upper part of water body,
where male and female congregate and breed in shallow
marginal aria

Katla fish generally consume food from the upper level
of the water & middle level also.They love to eat small
Insects,leaves of plant,phytoplankton etc.They also eat
zooplankton occasionally.Adults feed on zooplankton
usually but the young ones on both zooplankton and
phytoplankton.We can also serve fish meal &
supplementary fish feed for commercial katla fish
farming business.

Katla fish gain sexual maturity at the age of 3
years(average)A moderate size female katla fish contain
about 1.5-3 millions of eggs.They lay their eggs in open
water reservoirs.In favorable environment they lay eggs in
rainy season.We can also do breeding process of katla fish
artificially in the hatchery.
