As the internet became more and more important (and
today, of course, the cloud), the whole system became
more and more complex, especially to regulate this
environment. Additionally, I was very keen on under-
standing the security aspects of those networks. So, I
didn't just want to know how things were working, I
also wanted to know how things were working in a
secure way. So, I think all this together has brought me
to where I am today in the cybersecurity field. I can also
say that I started as an IT auditor, and then I moved on
to more cyber security executive leadership roles. It will
always be an ongoing journey (even after my active
career).
What are some of the biggest challenges that you face
in your role as Chief Information Security Officer &
Data Protection Officer at Cryptix AG, and how do
you address them?
Definitely the technical vulnerabilities, which we know
or, even worse, which we don't know. So normally, if a
company writes software code, shortly afterward it's
vulnerable. Hackers and intruders can try to find out
any kinds of vulnerabilities, and from then on, you really
have to have a good release management and security
team behind it to actually update it on a regular basis or
even to renew it from time to time, either on an
operating system level or an application level. And then,
on top of that, the speed, which came up in the last
couple of years, also comes from the attack vector,
looking at any kind of bot, dark net, or artificial
intelligence you can actually use to add or create new
attacks. One user or individual can actually do a lot of
damage.
Let's take on some phishing attacks. I'm sure you
remember the days where you had a lot of grammatical
errors, depending on which language you actually got
the spam, and nowadays, using chat GPT or whatever
other artificial intelligence, they will actually give you a
really nice example of phishing email without any

grammatical errors. Hopefully, on the other side, we
will also use the same technology to actually secure
ourselves or to make at least our side more secure. But
yeah, these are definitely things that I have to consider
and that concern me.
How do you stay up-to-date with the latest develop-
ments in the field of information security and data
protection, and what resources do you rely on?
That's not that easy to answer, I guess. But I mean,
these are multiple factors; I am reading a lot, either in
physical or online magazines. I also have several
cybersecurity RSS feeds, newsletters, tweets, and posts
from all kinds of different sources (you can also call
them security gurus in some way). Additionally, I attend
cybersecurity conferences and do several trainings
(including certifications and diplomas). This is impor-
tant to show that you are investing and learning, as the
"dark side" never sleeps. In the old days, training
consisted of a lot of multiple-choice questionnaires.
Nowadays, you can actually do more practical stuff; as I
mentioned before, you have access to virtual environ-
ments, and you can actually behave like a hacker, and
the tests are like, for example, 10 different hacker
possibilities you have to be capable of, if you manage to
pass seven, you get the certification. And that's really a
good thing because then you not only know how
hackers are actually behaving on a theoretical level but
you also know how they proceed on a practical or
technical level, which I really think is essential, and so
you understand even better how things are working.
What do you think are some of the most pressing
issues facing the information security and data
protection industry today, and what can be done to
address them?
AI is one that I obviously think is a pressing issue
because it is intended to help you do stuff or research
way faster than in the old days (even if three or four
analysts are doing the job). On the other hand, there
are concerns about data sharing; we have to distinguish
between what we are actually asking for and what we
are actually sharing. So, if you have a lot of requests
about your own, maybe even confidential, data, that
data can also be extracted (from internal sources). So,
you should really separate internal and external
requests.
What advice would you give to someone who is just
starting out in the field of information security and
data protection, and what qualities do you think are
essential for success in this field?
As long as you are a tech-savvy student or young talent,
I would definitely recommend starting in the informa-
tion security and data protection field. Even if you come
from a completely different area, you have to consider a
couple of things, but it's also possible as long as you
actually enjoy the technical and IT stuff. Remember that
you won’t have a nine to five job where you do
repetitive stuff or tasks. So, if you have those qualities,
join the club.

Also, having received the "outstanding leadership
award" in Dubai last year, I think that leadership suits
me as well.
Unfortunately, we can’t have a look in the big crystal
ball (nor can we predict the future). But as mentioned, I
will definitely stay in the security field (maybe more in a
digital transformation role or more in an overall IT role),
but it definitely has to do, at least to some extent, with
security (I was also recently nominated as a finalist at
the for this September so getting
Swiss CISO Awards
appreciation from the cybersecurity industry and peers
shows me that I am on the right track).
And then hopefully also taking on more responsibilities,
so sitting maybe at a big table or maybe even sitting on
several boards, that would be ideal if I could choose or
foresee my career path.
How do you balance your demanding career with your
personal life, and what strategies do you use to stay
energized and motivated?
Well, I guess I got a couple of gray hairs during my
career. But I don't know if that was because of any
cyber incidents or more because of my kids. Well,
sometimes some major incidents keep you up all night
(but that is part of the job). But otherwise, you're also
responsible for setting up some processes that are
working in your [health] favor. So again, you should not
be alone, systems should also work for you (by monitor-
ing your infrastructure on a 24/7 basis and alerting you
in any case of misbehavior or anomalies).
What is your long-term vision for your career and
personal life, and how do you plan to achieve it?
I would definitely say I will stay in the cybersecurity
field.

What inspired you to pursue a career in technology,
and how did you get started in this field?
Starting as an introvert back in the early days of
childhood, I have been hooked on computers since the
introduction of the Ataris and the Apple IIs … My first
introduction to the Apple II-GS was the turning point
where I sort of decided this was the future and this is
where I wanted to be. Since then, I have actively been
gearing myself into this arena, learning programming at
the young age of 10, and here I am.
As the Chief Technology Officer at Mola, what are
some of the biggest challenges you face in developing
and implementing technology solutions for the Media
and Entertainment industry, and how do you address
them?
Technology challenges across industries. I believe many
of us who helm the technology teams are facing similar
issues throughout our appointment. As the field of
technology is a rapidly evolving arena, it will almost be
impossible to pick the correct tool all the time. Our
value in leading in such an arena is to look beyond,
focus on grabbing the correct devil’s horn at the
moment, and plan for possible pitfalls in the future.
Every day is a new challenge as more sophisticated bad
actors come online.
Another common challenge that most tech leaders face
is the fight against budgeting for the future versus the
now. It’s a delicate approach that relies on the experi-
ence of each individual's exposure to the market.
What are some of the most important principles that
guide your approach to technology development, and
why are they so important?
Technology development, to me, relies on two key
fundamentals: the need to have and the want to have.
Focusing on the fundamentals, we have the layers
approach: impact on user experience, impact on system
design, and impact on security. This matrix drives our
approach to deciding what to do and when to do it.

How do you stay up-to-date with the latest develop-
ments and trends in technology, particularly as they
relate to the M&E industry, and what resources do you
rely on?
In today’s world, the world is our oyster, with the
tremendous amount of information one can derive
online. However, this information also comes with its
own pitfall: one has to listen above all the noise and
decipher the truth from the propaganda, the possible
from the possible, and the possible from the fakes. A
combination of online and offline resources is critical to
staying true to the mission of finding the best technol-
ogy for the job.
What do you think are some of the most pressing
issues facing the M&E industry today in terms of
technology, and what can be done to address them?
The challenges we faced were consistent and similar
through the generations: protecting our content, both
online and offline. Hence, instead of trying to lock down
and protect the content lock, stock, and barrel, new
approaches need to be looked at—timeliness of
delivery, design of engagement, etc. Working with key
partners across the globe is the best chance for any
player to beat the clock in this.
The next important element, related to technology, is
how each platform can evolve to suit the changing
nature of the user’s preferences and taste, how we can
revolve the existing content pool besides adding new
content with no limits, to ensure the users are taken
care of in their consumption of content.
What advice would you give to someone who is just
starting out in the field of technology development,
and what qualities do you think are essential for
success in this field?
For a start, the hunger to learn and the humbleness to
follow are the two key traits I will look for in anyone
starting in the technology field. The field is vast, and
there are many things we do not know until we come
across them. The hunger to keep learning and the
humility to follow are things anyone in the field needs
to have, especially at the start.
How do you balance your demanding career with your
personal life, and what strategies do you use to stay
energized and motivated?
I believe in time-out theory and the Law of Attraction.
These two beliefs have held me throughout my journey,
one to break my routine pattern and to find new
journeys forward, and the other to bring the future to
fruition.

had a meaningful impact on the lives of interactors and

To a motivated mind, the realm of possibility has no
boundaries. Our aspirations were big and we had the
audacity to challenge the status quo on multiple
assumptions of our time with the technologies we

implementing new technologies within your
organization, how do you approach innovation and
experimentation, and what are some of the key
principles that guide your work?
The innovation process cannot be a random and at-will
exercise. I strive to foster a culture of relevant
innovation through creativity and continuous learning
at all organizational levels. Innovation must be
meaningful, relevant, and aligned with the
organization's goals. Establishing what defines success
with any experimentation or innovation endeavour is
imperative. Define and measure success using relevant
metrics and adjust the approach as needed.
Implement a systematic approach to manage, evaluate
and implement fresh ideas. Leverage data and
technology to inform decision-making and identify
innovation opportunities. And more importantly, be
patient and ready to invest in long-term innovation,
even while seeking quick wins.
As technology continues to evolve rapidly, how do you
stay up to date on the latest trends and developments
in the field, and what advice do you have for others
looking to stay ahead of the curve?
Articles from magazines of repute and podcasts can be
good on-the-go resources. There are credible social
sources that can help with the latest trends and
happenings in the tech field. I strive to learn and impart
my experiences and intellect to others in the industry
as a thought leader and in academia as an advisor.
Interfacing with bright minds in related disciplines and
embracing and learning from their experiences is also a
great way to stay abreast of what's to come. In addition,
I present at conferences and academia and take part in
an amalgamation of ideas and feedback.
How do you balance technical expertise with business
strategy, and what role do CTOs play in driving
business growth?
Balancing technical expertise with business strategy
involves integrating technological understanding with a
clear vision of the company's strategic objectives. The
key is to ensure that the technical capabilities of the
organization align with its business goals and that
technology serves as an enabler of strategic priorities
rather than as a standalone element. The balance of
technical expertise with business strategy, led by the
CTO, is crucial in driving business growth in today's
digital age.
What are your goals for the future, both for your
organization and for the technology industry, more
broadly?
I have embarked on a mission to build bridges to the
future through the technology and solutions we create.
Our creations will outlive our times and the benefits
will be endearing for generations to come. Meaningful
innovation through the products we create will bring
about significant change in all interactors' lives.
At Slate, we are building technologies that will
transform the Architecture, Engineering and
Construction space. We were the first to come out with
a Decision Assistant with conversational capabilities in
this space and are continuing to be at the forefront of
breakthrough technologies to transform this landscape.

In the beginning, you don't really know where to start, and you don't know how the IT field will actually evolve. Nevertheless, I always had the feeling that IT (and in particular information security and data protection) was a prospering business environment. As a tech savvy person, I wanted to know how networks were working, build my own smaller networks, and then work for bigger and larger companies to see how they set up networks. As the internet became more and more important (and today, of course, the cloud), the whole system became more and more complex, especially to regulate this environment. Additionally, I was very keen on under- standing the security aspects of those networks. So, I didn't just want to know how things were working, I also wanted to know how things were working in a secure way. So, I think all this together has brought me to where I am today in the cybersecurity field. I can also say that I started as an IT auditor, and then I moved on to more cyber security executive leadership roles. It will always be an ongoing journey (even after my active career). What are some of the biggest challenges that you face in your role as Chief Information Security Officer & Data Protection Officer at Cryptix AG, and how do you address them? Definitely the technical vulnerabilities, which we know or, even worse, which we don't know. So normally, if a company writes software code, shortly afterward it's vulnerable. Hackers and intruders can try to find out any kinds of vulnerabilities, and from then on, you really have to have a good release management and security team behind it to actually update it on a regular basis or even to renew it from time to time, either on an operating system level or an application level. And then, on top of that, the speed, which came up in the last couple of years, also comes from the attack vector, looking at any kind of bot, dark net, or artificial intelligence you can actually use to add or create new attacks. One user or individual can actually do a lot of damage. Let's take on some phishing attacks. I'm sure you remember the days where you had a lot of grammatical errors, depending on which language you actually got the spam, and nowadays, using chat GPT or whatever other artificial intelligence, they will actually give you a really nice example of phishing email without any www.ciolook.com | June 2023 | 22

  • 26. grammatical errors. Hopefully, on the other side, we will also use the same technology to actually secure ourselves or to make at least our side more secure. But yeah, these are definitely things that I have to consider and that concern me. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest develop- ments in the field of information security and data protection, and what resources do you rely on? That's not that easy to answer, I guess. But I mean, these are multiple factors; I am reading a lot, either in physical or online magazines. I also have several cybersecurity RSS feeds, newsletters, tweets, and posts from all kinds of different sources (you can also call them security gurus in some way). Additionally, I attend cybersecurity conferences and do several trainings (including certifications and diplomas). This is impor- tant to show that you are investing and learning, as the "dark side" never sleeps. In the old days, training consisted of a lot of multiple-choice questionnaires. Nowadays, you can actually do more practical stuff; as I mentioned before, you have access to virtual environ- ments, and you can actually behave like a hacker, and the tests are like, for example, 10 different hacker possibilities you have to be capable of, if you manage to pass seven, you get the certification. And that's really a good thing because then you not only know how hackers are actually behaving on a theoretical level but you also know how they proceed on a practical or technical level, which I really think is essential, and so you understand even better how things are working. What do you think are some of the most pressing issues facing the information security and data protection industry today, and what can be done to address them? AI is one that I obviously think is a pressing issue because it is intended to help you do stuff or research way faster than in the old days (even if three or four analysts are doing the job). On the other hand, there are concerns about data sharing; we have to distinguish between what we are actually asking for and what we are actually sharing. So, if you have a lot of requests about your own, maybe even confidential, data, that data can also be extracted (from internal sources). So, you should really separate internal and external requests. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in the field of information security and data protection, and what qualities do you think are essential for success in this field? As long as you are a tech-savvy student or young talent, I would definitely recommend starting in the informa- tion security and data protection field. Even if you come from a completely different area, you have to consider a couple of things, but it's also possible as long as you actually enjoy the technical and IT stuff. Remember that you won’t have a nine to five job where you do repetitive stuff or tasks. So, if you have those qualities, join the club.   • 27. Also, having received the "outstanding leadership award" in Dubai last year, I think that leadership suits me as well. Unfortunately, we can’t have a look in the big crystal ball (nor can we predict the future). But as mentioned, I will definitely stay in the security field (maybe more in a digital transformation role or more in an overall IT role), but it definitely has to do, at least to some extent, with security (I was also recently nominated as a finalist at the for this September so getting Swiss CISO Awards appreciation from the cybersecurity industry and peers shows me that I am on the right track). And then hopefully also taking on more responsibilities, so sitting maybe at a big table or maybe even sitting on several boards, that would be ideal if I could choose or foresee my career path. How do you balance your demanding career with your personal life, and what strategies do you use to stay energized and motivated? Well, I guess I got a couple of gray hairs during my career. But I don't know if that was because of any cyber incidents or more because of my kids. Well, sometimes some major incidents keep you up all night (but that is part of the job). But otherwise, you're also responsible for setting up some processes that are working in your [health] favor. So again, you should not be alone, systems should also work for you (by monitor- ing your infrastructure on a 24/7 basis and alerting you in any case of misbehavior or anomalies). A combination of online and offline resources is critical to staying true to the mission of finding the best technol- ogy for the job. What do you think are some of the most pressing issues facing the M&E industry today in terms of technology, and what can be done to address them? The challenges we faced were consistent and similar through the generations: protecting our content, both online and offline. Hence, instead of trying to lock down and protect the content lock, stock, and barrel, new approaches need to be looked at—timeliness of delivery, design of engagement, etc. Working with key partners across the globe is the best chance for any player to beat the clock in this. The next important element, related to technology, is how each platform can evolve to suit the changing nature of the user’s preferences and taste, how we can revolve the existing content pool besides adding new content with no limits, to ensure the users are taken care of in their consumption of content.
