5. Plug-in environmental impact
Reduction of DIRECT CO2 emission -> F-Gas regulation
Propane is the most used and spread refrigerant for plug-in applications.
Reduction of INDIRECT CO2 emissions -> Ecodesign & Energy labelling
In recent years, OEMs have been demanding new technologies to achieve
better, more measurable and repeatable energy consumption.
● For professional refrigerated cabinets (ENTR Lot 1), the energy
efficiency classes are already being applied. Products with energy efficiency class F
are banned from 2019.
● For commercial refrigerated display cabinets (ENER Lot 12), products
with an energy efficiency class below G will be banned from 2023.
6. Plug-in usability and harsh environments
Harsh environments
There is a growing need to protect the refrigerators from the harshest environments and electrical
hazards resulting from dirt, heat and humidity, or from washing the cooler itself.
In addition to these are possible sources of electromechanical stress, such as frequent stop/starts of the
compressor during the most intense hours of operation in kitchens and instability of the power supply
network.
Ease of maintenance
Evolving technology is improving the unit efficiency and its complexity. New solutions have also to
consider the maintenance operations supporting a fast detection of failure and clear instructions on the
resolution.
7. Food preservation and presentation
Food quality
The improvement of technologies for professional refrigeration has also
made it possible to extend the shelf life of food, with a significant impact
on reducing food waste and increasing food safety.
Aesthetic integration
One growing demand in these markets is for the coolers to look good.
Indeed, manufacturers aim to stand out from the competition by offering
increasingly refined designs, both in terms of aesthetics and unit usability.
8. Connected Plug-in
IoT exploring
Refrigerated plug-in units can be connected for:
- plant optimisation, specially if installed together with other units (typical for retail)
- asset control, specially for stand alone installation where final user would have a remote control and installers
can offer a better service level.
New technologies are introducing a new user experience via apps, designed for
different class of users.
