1. Case study-New Line Cinema
New Line Cinema New Line Cinema was established in
1967 by Robert Shaye, who at the time was 27, as a
film distribution company supplying foreign and art
films in the United States. Shaye operated New Line's
offices out of his apartment at 14th Street and
Second Avenue in New York City. Continuing to build
on more than four decades of innovation and
creativity, New Line Cinema has a successful history
of producing critically acclaimed hit films that communicate with and attract both
mainstream and niche audiences around the world.
Films they have made include:
Why this is significant:
The reason I have specifically noted these 3 films is due to the fact that they are all based on
human psychology and the films se7en and the butterfly effect being successful
psychological thrillers. Whilst The Cell may be seen as a horror it still heavily emphasises
aspects of fear and psychology. This then means that not only can New Line cinema create
massive box office successes such as both The Lord of the rings trilogy with ‘The Return of
the King’ making $1,119,929,521 worldwide and one of the highest grossing films of all time.
But also films like American History X and Se7en as I mentioned meaning they have a range
of darker films for a more adult audience which would be suitable for my filmas it would
probably have an 18 rated certificate.
Background:
On January 28, 1994, New Line Cinema was bought by Ted Turner's Turner Broadcasting
System, which then merged with Time Warner in 1996. Ted Turner’s companies Hanna-
2. Barbera Productions and Castle Rock Entertainment eventually became units of Warner
Bros. New Line Cinema however was kept as its own entity until February 28, 2008, when
Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes announced that New Line Cinema would shut down as a
separately operated studio. Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne alongside Time warner and
Jeffery Bewkes promised that the company would continue to operate its financing,
producing, marketing, and distributing operations of its own films with the New Line logo,
but would do so now as a part of Warner Bros. and be a smaller studio, releasing a smaller
number of films each year, around 6 per year. Not only this but Michael Lynne and Robert
Shaye had now stepped down.
Why New line cinema:
Due to the new parent company being a large multi-national conglomerate, the budget for
New Line Cinema would increase and they could increase their audience through Warner
Bros’ powers and connections, therefore distribution has increased. With now even more
media platforms for exhibition the productions’ reach and availability would now be greatly
increased but now also with a trusted household name like Warner Bros. This means that
my product could achieve box office success, as not only does the chosen distributor have
experience with large psychological thrillers or films similar in theme but now also has a
larger budget for production and finance. But it
also has a renowned name with connections to
large directors such as Christopher Nolan who
is an extremely successful director with films
like inception and interstellar, but also it will
increase the consumer confidence meaning
that due to the fact it is a trusted company
they will be more willing to spend their discretionary income. But also for cost efficiency and
time efficiency as Warner Bros. is a vertically integrated conglomerate meaning that all
areas of production, marketing, distribution etc. are all done under one roof along with a
massive budget.
This then makes New Line Cinema very suited to my media product over other production
companies such as vertigo films.
