Audience Segment Aspect Of Film Why Does it Work For This Audience
Fans of the music –
Secondary audience
Non-Diegetic Sound The music within The Descent is from John Carpenter which would gain the attention of a
lot of film fans, which often tend to be male audiences, hence being more secondary
audience-based.
Primary/Secondary Blood/Gore The blood and gore that is used within The Descent gains the attention of primary
audiences as well as secondary due to people who may have an interest in films that
involve violence and blood and gore, etc.
Fans of films like Dog
Soldiers – Secondary
audience
Neil Marshall The fact that a lot of people enjoyed the 2005 feature film Dog Soldiers, (which was also
directed by Neil Marshall) would give The Descent a lot of attention because of film fans
that like Neil Marshall’s films.
Primary Drama Generally we see that women often enjoy drama television more than men so more of the
primary audience (mainly women) would be more interested in that sort of theme within
the movie.
Secondary Adventure Now in contrast to the Drama aspect, men are usually more into an adventurous genre
within films so this aspect would gain more attention from a male audience.
Primary Survival This aspect can really be set for a primary or a secondary audience because when there is
tension built up within a film, the attention from all audiences increases and it only makes
the film more exciting for them.
Primary Horror A lot like the Survival aspect as people begin to pay more attention and become more
excited when there is tension within a movie and horror movies do just that.
Additional Audiences Extreme Sports –
Spelunking
For fans of extreme sports, e.g. spelunking, snowboarding, etc., generally any extreme
activity; The Descent may gain their attention due to the entire film being set
underground whilst doing an extreme sport.

Primary Death The aspect of Death within The Descent works for the primary audience as it links to what
they would preferably want to see within a horror film. For example, as part of the
primary audience; teenage girls having a slumber party would most likely want to see
death within a horror film as it gives them something to be scared at together, in a group
which would make their experience more fun for them and in turn, the film would gain
more attention.
Secondary Cast As the secondary audience would mainly consist of a male audience, having an all-female
cast would gain attention from them for several reasons.
The obvious reason is sex appeal, as there are six sweaty and dirty women fighting and
surviving throughout the film and also promotional posters for The Descent put more
emphasis on the breasts of the women.
Another reason could be that the audience has seen the actors in other films or television
series and liked their performances within them and therefore are more inclined to go
and watch The Descent.
Also, the fact that it is women and not men who are the main “heroes” within The Descent
is also intriguing because it shows that a woman can be strong without the aid of any men,
a lot like what was shown by Sigourney Weaver in Alien.
