Drama and horror is mainly used
for movies with teenagers in such
as the babysitter, riverdale etc, this
is because it appeals more to their
demographic of teenagers.
The first
drama and
horror film
was called
the House of
the Devil in
1986
Drama horrors
often take place
during modern
day with the
central characters
isolated from the
rest of society,
they are as said
often teenagers
perhaps because
they are more
vulnerable. Yet
they are
eventually killed
off during the film,
creating tension
and questioning.
Our genre can
be determined
by the codes

conventions
used and how
we portray it

Ideas Group Discussion:
4. I will be researching how
Horror movies have changed
over time. Horror is the theme
of a genre of speculative
fiction which is intended to
frighten, scare, disgust, or
startle its readers by inducing
feelings of horror and terror.
Horror films have somewhat
dominated the film industry
for decades, showing
progress through editing of
CGI and getting increasingly
better with the props, though
the plots and storylines tend
to stay around a very similar
theme.
From this research, I found out
that horror movies are
constantly changing to ideas
which can create more fear, as
we can see in the more recent
years, horror has seen a fast
transition to the main villains
being ordinary people and for
the settings to be in very
normal places, such as the
movie ‘It’, it is set in a very
normal and crowded town,
this creates more fear for the
audience as it shows them
how easy it is for horror to
occur.

5. History of Drama Movies
I will be researching how common
Drama movies have changed
over time, looking at Drama films,
the purpose of a dramatic
storyline is to move the audience
emotionally, drama films depend
more so on the development of
realistic characters dealing with
emotional or physical issues. In
most cases within drama films, we
can note that the films
concentrate on characters who
face conflict or a dilemma, the
genre Drama gives actors the
chance to expand and grow into a
role other genres would not let
them do, this is because the
audience and characters
engagement is much higher.
1940
1950
1960
1970
1980
1990
2000
In the early years of the 1940’s, most
films were pantomime styles, also
included many melodrama films in
silence. Melodrama movies such as The
grapes of wrath show the evident signs
of depression. By the use of silence
films, it allowed audiences to fully
engage with the actors body language.
Looking at britain, 1940’s was very
hectic, in a time of war ( post war ), the
british film industry reflected their
changes in the movies that were made,
these can be such as the movie Gaslight,
where there was also an american
version ( it had sound as it was
introduced within the 1940s yet many
movies did not have the ability to use
sound.
Looking at the 1950’s, this began with a
huge rise in well known dramatic actors,
these were actors such as
-Montgomery Clift
-Glenn Ford
-James Dean
-Bette Daves
-Marilyn Monroe
These were all very notable and influential
actors within this period of time.
These dramatic films which were released
tended to focus on character developments
and relationships with men, this took many
audiences interest. This can be found in
many movies such as Rebel without a cause
(1955 ) which displayed a teenage angst and
films like 12 Angry men in 1959 which
showed audience members the inner
workings of courtrooms, showing a
heightened sense of reality to movies.
The history of drama movies within the
1960’s brought politically driven dramas
which focused on war as the Vietnam
war was in 1960, this sense of bringing
this into movies would have created a
larger sense of reality, bringing audience
member a larger understanding of the
content they are being shown. This can
be found in movies such as Judgment at
Nuremberg 1961. Flashback in 1969 and
the Manchurian Candidate in 1962. The
times were changing in america in the
60’s many movies reflected these
changes of freedom such as beach party
escapism and effervescent to musicals to
dark political comedies.
During the 1970’s, modern dramatic directors made some of
their first films such as Francis Ford directed the godfather
movie in 1972.
-Martin Scorsese directed Taxi Driver in 1976
-Mean streets 1973
-The musical drama New york New york in 1977.
Sylvester Stallone created one of the most successful sports
drama franchise with Rocky in 1976 and also created a
second one in 1979.
In addition sports dramas were films which were uprising and
became very popular during these times, they tended to
focus on the struggles of athletes such as Brian's Song in
1970, The Longest Yard (1974).
War films and specifically world war 2 films were produced,
giving the most realistic adaptations of war at that time such
as Patton in 1970 or Apocalypse now in 1979.
These movies showed all the trials and hardships of war and
are seen as classic drama war films.
In the 1980’s dramatic films took emphasis on highly emotional films,
targeting and engaging with audiences such as the movie Do the right
thing 1989 and The colour purple in 1985.
Drama movies with a science fiction edge were also being produced,
with the proliferation of technology and the use of CGI and more props
than previous decades gave movie franchises the possibility to explore
into new subgenres such as science fiction and drama, such as when
Steven Spielberg directed E.T in 1982. Ridley Scott directed the blade
runner in 1982, giving audience members more to look with within the
film industry, creating a larger variety of new movies
During the 1990’s there had been the
introduction to many crime dramas
such as Good Fellas in 1990. There
had also been more emotional content
being produced such as themes of
home, looking at movies such as The
Shawshank Redemption in 1994.
Dramas also took a big turn with
existentialist thrillers such as Fight
Club in 1999.
Child oriented dramas were also
introduced such as cartoon movies,
with a huger proliferation of
technology, being able to source
correct market research gave large
institutions the possibility to explore all
potential audience members.
The 20th century to the modern day has
expanded dramatically through technology,
through more consumers having the ability to
be prosumers, there had been massive
increases in demands in films such as disney
teen dramas, or psychological dramas and so
on.
In conclusion, these drama films focus on a
specific time era, and have strong relation to
the external influences, the era in which the
film is set not only adds to the plot, but
allows the audience to have stronger
comprehension of the context of the films.
Furthermore it taught me that due to the
huge proliferation of technology with CGI, it
makes producers more able to achieve their
intended message. Moving forward this will
help with our coursework as it shows how
these massive conglomerates use the time
and era to have more influential impacts on
their audience members.

6. Who usually distributes movies of your genre? (roba)
A film distributor is responsible for marketing the film and making it available for the audience to view it. The
company will pay the distributor so they they can claim the movie as their own and showcase it because the
more the distributor is well known the more audience it will have, the distributor will be responsible for setting
the release date and the method in which the film will be made in but the producer will alwasy have the final
say as they are the ones with the money. Some examples of movie distributors are warner bros and netflix.
A media institution tends to be a large regulated global corporation that is responsible for producing different
media products, they usually would have influence on the audience and can influence them. An example of this
is Disney as it is a very large and powerful conglomerate that dominates the market and has great influence.

9. The typical codes and conventions of our genre:
- Horror drama
- MESS - mise en scene , tatted clothes to show weakness like etc
- What are the typical things - Mise en scene sound editing shots ( examples)
Dana
The term code and convention suggest how movies are flexible and
adapt to different audiences, purposes and new technologies. Codes are
signs which have the potential for different meanings and conventions
are arrangements that become habitual and accepted. Altman created
such method of analyzing genre to become aware of common traits
between different movies with different genres. This theory allowed for a
generalization of specific genres. Semantics create meaning in movies
using location, props, and characters and Syntactics refer to the
arrangement or structural and deeper meaning for example two
characters are sometimes complete opposites.
Drama:
Semantics of drama movies usually are
set in a suburban areas to the populate.
The costumes are more ‘normal’ in the
sense that it’s casual, Cinematography is
related to the plot, lighting pleases the
current mood of the main character and
situation. In all, the Mise- en- scene of this
genre is meant to collaborate together to
allow the audience to become convinced
that these stories could happen (unlike
science fiction or fantasy).
Syntactics of drama movies shows that
they have deeper meaning. The usual
themes emphasized through these
movies revolve around love, family,
understanding, and life. They’re meant to
contain both dramatic syntax (usually,
concerning love or a “moral” dilemma)
and Comedy (usually concerning a
emphasis of a “good time” and “living in
the moment”).
Horror:
Semantics: Horror films are typically located in isolated
spaces, where the characters have nowhere to run and are
helpless to the situation that they are caught in. For
example in Cabin in the Woods they are caught in a cabin
in the woods. This creates conflict for the characters as
they try to escape this game that they are a part of. A
common prop in horror films is the knife. It is the
instrument that creates the most tension and can kill the
character as well as the lighting makes the knife look
awesome before the kill. The classic characters in horror
movies are the jocks, the slut, the old person, the killer, the
bad girl, the skeptic and the little girl.
Syntactics: In horror films we expect the main character to
survive or have a cast of characters become narrowed
down to one survivor. We also expect them to be running
from a creature or person. This gives the audience anxiety
although they know that they are safe. That is the point of
horror movies, to use action to manipulate the audience’s
emotions to make them feel for the characters and become
sad when they are killed or greatful when they survive.
Horror & drama (our genre):
So now that i have accessed the semantics and syntactics of horror movies and
drama movies the typical codes and conventions for a mix of both a drama and
horror movie will be a mix of both.
There will still be jump scares, low key lighting, Flashbacks, Quick, flashing shots,
Large, family houses, Dark colour palettes, Pathetic fallacy and Young children but
with some real life situations and realistics characters to add drama. As well as
some Intense social interactions because the main purpose of a dramatic story
line is to move the audience emotionally.
MISE EN SCENE - Costumes/Props - either costumes suiting the time period or
characters occupation - doctor, teacher, policeman/woman ect. The props used
are always likely featuring weapons, homes, cars, belongings that are significant
to the plot. often cold, dark, and set in the winter - stormy/windy/raining. If based
in the summer then scenes of danger or attacks commonly take place in the night.
LOCATION- Locations and Settings - Large, abandoned areas of space - country
homes/estates, countryside, hospitals, mental institutions and are often away from
cities or large areas of civilization. If based in a City, the film would play more
likely on delusion for example and create a sense of isolation for the character,
which distracts the audience from the large city and population - most often take
away the attention from the location
SOUND - Non-diegetic or diegetic, dark, dramatic, eerie, loud/quiet, often gradual
to create and build tension. Sounds used - within the scene they are often
uncommon, strange and capture either the audience and the characters attention
together - emphasises the unknown or sense of danger.
SHOTS - Close ups of characters, Low Angle and High angle shots- to portray
strength and weakness amongst characters. Clear shots and angles show
different groups within the cast (Teen Drama). For example in Kidulthood (a good
example for the type of film we are researching) the weaker girl is shown by a high
angle looking down on her and the bully is shown with a low angle to portray the
strength and power of the bully. Also the lighting in Drama/Teen Drama’s are
important as it show’s the gritty side of Drama/Teen Drama which is vital to our
project.

CRITIC REVIEWS FOR THE BABYSITTER:
“This is exactly what a good Halloween prank should look like.
A little bit of gore, a little bit of T&A, outrageously stereotypical
high school kids, and nothing in the way of a plot to worry
about. That's not to say it's not extremely successful at what it
aspires to: good, silly fun for Halloween”
“If you're looking for a scare, you won't get that from this movie. What
you will get is anticipation and emotion of fear with the wonder of how
will this end. The movie is an hour and a half - and once the inciting
incident happens and the plot gets going - the tension and pace does
not let up. This is definitely a movie that you can watch more than once
and still be entertained”
The movies “The Babysitter is an example of a
movie which is horror but also a drama. It's about
a movie where Cole stays up past his bedtime, he
discovers that his hot babysitter belongs to a
satanic cult that will stop at nothing to keep him
quiet. It was released on October 13, 2017
CRITIC REVIEWS FOR THE BABYSITTER:
“Director McG and writer Brian Duffield deserve a lot of
credit for The Babysitter, it isn't groundbreaking but it's a
damn fun film that has just enough laughs and just enough
gore to keep everyone interested”
“Sometimes you just need a crazy silly horror movie. One
that just wants to have a bit of morbid fun.”
“The Babysitter has meticulously placed laughs (and
music) when needed, but the standout laughs come from
Andrew Bachelor (who plays John), better known as King
Bach from his laugh-inducing, viral Vine videos”
From the review i gathered from both rotten
tomatoes and imdb, which are two popular
reviewing websites, the overall reviews of the
babysitter were positive. On Rotten tomatoes the
film has an approval rating of 72% based on
reviews from 29 critics, with an average rating of
6.19/10. The website's critics consensus reads:
"Enjoyable if not particularly original, The
Babysitter makes the most of its familiar genre
ingredients with energetic direction and a killer
cast." On IMDb it was similarly rated a 6.3. So
overall it passed and made $404,923 on box
office. People enjoyed the way the filmed made a
teen drama comedy scary, it made the movie
unique. As well as the popular actors amongst the
teenage generation which really played a huge
role in its success. An example is Bella Thorne
and Hana Mae Lee which is well known from
pitch perfect.
Why was it so successful?

Movie statistics:
The movie “IT” is said to be a horror and a drama
movie. The movie is about seven helpless and
bullied children are forced to face their worst
nightmares when Pennywise, a shape-shifting
clown, reappears. The clown, an ancient evil
torments children before feeding on them. It was
Released in September 5, 2017.
CRITIC REVIEWS FOR “IT”:
“I'm writing this not so much as a critic but as an ordinary
moviegoer, experiencing Proustian transport via an
old-fashioned scary movie executed by a team of filmmakers
and actors at the top of their game”
“Despite how terrifying Pennywise is, the film never loses its
essence: the youthful innocence and psychological growth of its
protagonists”
“"It" takes metaphorical childhood hopes and fears and gives
them literal form. The film tells a tale of growing up, of coming to
terms with the reality of the world where monsters surround us”
CRITIC REVIEWS FOR “IT”:
“It's a very scary film but what impressed me was how true the film sticks
to the original's tricks; it isn't filled with loud in-your-face jump scares, in
fact, a lot of what makes this film scary is the slick cinematography and
intricate shadow play. The use of lighting and creation of atmosphere is
what makes this film so tense, which is why it's perfectly suited for those
who like Horror movies but without the obnoxious gore”
“I absolutely love clowns and this is one of my favorite horrors, I even own It in
4K! Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) is done perfectly and the rest of cast is
excellent. I wish I was interested in writing years ago maybe someone
important could enjoy my opinion that's what I am hoping! Easily quote worthy
and incredible soundtrack!”
Why was it so successful?
As i gathered from the reviews from both rotten
tomatoes and IMDb the audience were intrigued
with the way it bought horror but was able to
relate to teen life experiences with the characters.
Not only was IT so successful it earned positive
critical reception, but also collected nearly $700
million worldwide. When asked why he thought
the IT movie performed so well, King attributed its
success to people still remembering the “IT TV
miniseries” that came out over 25 years ago so
fondly. In King's words: “I think one of the things
that really happened was that 1990 miniseries. A
whole generation of kids between the ages of 8
and 14 were scared shitless by Tim Curry and
when the new one came out it was a chance to
revisit that particular experience in their
childhood. Then there was this weird viral bulge in
stories about creepy clowns. That was in the
press all over the place. So it was a number of
different things. It was the right movie at the right
time.” As well as the actors such as “Finn
Wolfhard” which is well known from the show
stranger things and “Sophia Lillis” which starred in
some popular movies such as “Gretel and
Hansel” and “Nancy Drew and the Hidden
Staircase.” Which may have also attracted a large
audience who are fans of the cast members.
12. Questionnaire to find out what your audience wants to see in your genre of film. What about the trailer
makes them want to see the film? ( Sarah )
13. From the first question, we
can see that we got 22
responses. From the
responses it was evidently
clear that most peoples
favourite things in horror /
drama movies are jump
scares, this may be because
it adds tension, creates
suspension and keeps the
audience members at the end
of their seats. This makes
them feel a need to finish
watching the movie due to
how scary it is, adding a jump
scare feature in our movie will
be taken into consideration as
it can increase the amount of
people watching it.
( Sarah )
14. From this question, I learnt
that there are many things
which are evidently disliked
about horror movies and
drama, audience members
dislike watching movies
which are too dramatic,
therefore when making our
final piece, we will look into
consideration to ensure that
we do not make it too
dramatic. They also dislike
when the storylines are too
basic or repetitive, so we will
not make ours too repetitive.
( Sarah )
15. From this question, we just
wanted to further understand
audience members favorite
movies, from the survey, we
found out that movies such as
the conjuring, ouija and very
mainstream movies. This not
only shows how evident
oligopolies are within the film
industry, but shows that more
common mainstreams codes
and conventions such as jump
scares, tatted clothes etc.
( Sarah )
16. From this question, I wanted
to know whether audience
members take interest into
drug addicts and problems,
they do not therefore when
we create our final piece, we
will not make our cast
members drug addicts as our
target audience will not relate
to it furthermore it wont make
them understand the
characters situation.
( Sarah )
17. From this question, we
wanted to gain knowledge as
to how to make our final
piece fit more with the
common codes and
conventions of horror by how
to scare audience members,
therefore they expressed that
things such as being sliced,
being eaten poisoned and
much more are evident ways
in which they have feared
movies. Things such as
being vulnerable or running
away will be added to our
final piece as it shows
weakness and creates
sympathy in the audience.
( Sarah )
18. From this question, it taught
me the main themes within
horror movies which were
movies such as the conjuring,
ouija or the saw series. This
helps me understand the main
themes within the movies, and
how we can interpret the main
features into our movie, to
keep with the themes and
codes and conventions.
( Sarah )
19. From this question, it taught
me the main themes within
drama movies by looking at
the main movies such as the
shining, love island and
more, these features of
drama helps keep the
audience members
interested, therefore more
likely to watch it.
( Sarah )
20. From this question I wanted to
gain more knowledge as to
storylines, as this will help us
when it comes to the
construction of our storyline for
our movie, many people said
when it is based on a true
story, this could be as it is
more realistic, creating a new
sense of fear. Many other
people said possession, such
as being controlled, this
creates a sense of vulnerability
and will be taken into
consideration when we create
out final piece.
( Sarah )
21. This question was to see the
typical codes and conventions to
see what can be added to our
final piece, this can be things
such as
-weak clothes > Vulnerability
and weakness.
-Demons > Religion, makes it
more realistic.
Messy hair and messy clothes
to show they have been through
drama and to create a sense of
helplessness.
( Sarah )
22. Audience profile for your movie. ( Roba )
❖ In this slide i will be talking about who we our target audience are;
● Audience demographics;
➢ Age: BBFC 15+ age rating and mainly directed at the audience 15 to 25.
❏ The reasoning for this is that 15 to 25 age group will be able to relate more to the characters as the
characters are of similar age. The BBFC rating is because the movie is a horor so it will contain elements
that anyone who is below 15 might find shocking or too scary and not appropriate for them as it contains
scary elements and drug use.
➢ Ethnicity: all ethnicities
❏ We will make sure that we have a variety of ethnicities so that any ethnicity who watch the trailer will be
able to relate.
➢ Gender: mainly female
❏ as the cast will mainly consist of females so they would be able to relate more.
➢ social-economic background: no specific background.
❏ The trailer will not be focusing on social backgrounds so it will not matter.
● Audience psychographics;
➢ Attitude: has an interest in horror and drama movies especially horror and drama as that it what our trailer is about.
➢ Personality traits: someone who wants to escape reality or to relate to a character, a person who suffers from
mental illnesses or struggles with drug abuse or peer pressure.
❏ Our tailor has aspects of drug abuse and peer pressure so the audience will be able to relate to this and it
will offer escapism as it is not a reality.
➢ Values and beliefs: playful and likes to explore or try new things
23. BLANK SLIDE,
ON THE NEXT SLIDES YOUR MOVIE
TRAILER, WEBSITE AND POSTER
ANALYSIS
24. BIRD BOX ANALYSIS: SARAH PRIESTLEY
Looking at the analysis of this trailer, we can see it was released in november 2018, the release date close to
october, the month of halloween, perhaps advocating it is a horror. We can also see that it was given a 67%
rating by rotten tomatoes which is a good rating, suggesting the movie is of a high quality. This movie is a
subgenre of horror and adventure yet some drama is included within the genre. Looking at the three act-rules,
we can see that this trailer somewhat follows it. Starting at the establishment of the trailer we can immediately
see a long shot with a high view of a forest, this to me represents isolation, danger and fear. The shot from far
away is also known as an establishing shot, showing the setting and denoting that the movie will mostly take
place in a forest, far away from society and this creates a sense of alarment, and questioning as it makes the
audience question why they are there, why they are alone, creating a small sense of fear just by looking at it.
Moreover looking at the mise-en scene again looking at colour representation by the use of the dark toned
greens, and grey's it again associates with sadness, fear and the use of no bright colours furthermore shows me
that it is not going to be a bright nor will it be a happy movie, instead the dark colours associated with gloom,
danger, death bring a more shallow tone to the movie. For the editing, we can just see they are using simple
invisible cuts to again follow the three act rule, they continue to show more establishing shots to keep a sense of
continuity. Yet the beginning, it fades in from a black, suggesting that the movie is dark, terrifying and the slow
fade makes it hard for audience members to grasp on where to look, the slow movement creates suspension
and fear, creating the mood for the trailer and makes audience members want to know more. The sound of the
beginning of this establishing shot is a non-diegetic voice-over of a character who plays an important role in the
movie, he says ‘storytime’ the word storytime can be interpreted different ways, looking at the stuart hall theory it
can be interpreted as a myth, something which didn't happen such as Jack frost, scary stories however,
assuming the way it was meant to be interpreted is to grab the audience's attention to what he is saying, he
proceeds to talk about his childhood, which creates a sense of nostalgia but again for the audience members
this may create an uneasy feeling and confusion as to why he is talking about it when he is a grown man,
therefore paying attention to what he is saying to further understand the concept of the trailer.
TRAILER ANALYSIS
sarah
25. Moving on, to further expand on the establishment section of the three act rule, we can see the common
codes and conventions of what we usually see in a common horror movie, we tend to find victims who
are helpless, in this case it is children. By the use of children we can see and feel sympathy towards
them as children are innocent therefore it makes the audience want to know what happens to them. The
shot is a medium close up shot, and an over the shoulder shot of the adult on the boat, this shows her
perspective of the children and perhaps creates a stronger tone of how it is her ultimate goal to protect
these children. We can see by the use of the shot of these children it makes them look weak, vulnerable
and scared, all the common conventions of a typical contemporary horror movie. The mise-en scene we
can see body language, they are hugging onto each other tightly, perhaps emphasising on the fact they
are scared, on an isolated boat in the middle of nowhere. The older boy hugging the girl creates a sense
of security for the girl, showing the audience members there is a clear bond between them, and how they
have this need to protect each other, showing a clear emotional connection between them. The mise-en
scene also shows the clothing they have, which is scruffy and basic clothing, again the typical type of
clothing used in horror movies to victimise the characters more however the use of it can be seen as they
are strong characters with the urge to survive over the fact that they are beaten down and have no other
clothes, making themselves look stronger, giving the audience some security as to their safety. We can
also see that these characters have blindfolds over their eyes, the more obvious part of this picture. This
is because they are not meant to see this evil creature, however audience members first watching the
trailer will be unaware of this therefore it creates a sense of confusion, making them need to watch on to
satisfy their quench for knowledge of this trailer. The editing is again fast invisible cut shots, this is
because the pace of the trailer is slowly increasing, leading up to the disturbance yet not at too of a fast
pace. The sound is again the non-diegetic overlap of the man's voice saying how ‘when he was a child
he would go on the boat’ this connotes to him having a good time yet this hugely contrasts to what the
children will associate of being on a boat. This could make the audience feel a sense of sympathy for the
children, as they will never experience a normal childhood, which creates a sad tone. Yet also creates
confusion as the audience will want to know why they are out on a boat.
TRAILER ANALYSIS
26. Looking further into the trailer, we can see through following the three-act structure we can see that there is
an immediate disruption, this does not flow with three act structure in a way where the disruption is in the
middle, however it challenges it and has the disruption early, this is perhaps because the concept of the
storyline may be harder to understand therefore adding in more things such as longer disruption may make
it clearer for audience members to understand the concept of the Bird Box. Furthermore the shot we can
see of them in the water is a long shot, this is so that it can depict more of the background of the scary
rocky background which appears dangerous to show audience members that the movie is not going to be
simple, or easy to follow. Instead it will be difficult, long and traitorous. The shot also makes the character
seem very small in such a huge rift of water, perhaps comparing them to the struggle which they have to
face, emphasising on how the chances of making it is very small, creating a sense of fear for the audience
as they are rooting for their survival. The mise-en scene as we can see is again very dark, very gloomy to
set the tone of the movie as a horror, again the typical conventions of a horror are dark gloomy colours, we
can see that the producers ensures the background of the river was scary by adding sharp dark rocks
everywhere, to show and create fear as if they hit into one they will most likely die , therefore all these
potential risks add up and it creates tension for audience members. The dark colours connote death,
danger and isolation, again with the characters being the only people through the trailer, it accentuates the
danger they will have to face, with no help whatsoever. The sound of water splashing emphasises on the
danger they have, and how loud it is again accentuates their isolation as usually water is quiet and calming,
the producers made it loud and chaotic, showing audience members that they are alone and its them
versus the water. The editing is fast invisible cut editing, this is because it keeps the pace fast, showing the
audience members that water is not the only thing they fear, making the movie trailer appear more sudden,
faster and much scarier than what they feel water should be.
TRAILER ANALYSIS
27. Moving onto more of the disruption from the three act structure we can see that this is a close up, this is of the main characters
face looking shocked, scared and afraid ( again linking to the common conventions of horror looking at Rick Altman's suggestion
that horror movies all have the same semantics and syntactics). We can see that the use of this shot with a shallow focus was to
emphasise on her face and her emotions, showing the audience that what she has seen is truly shocking, furthermore this also
does not reveal too much of the movie, it does not show the audience what she has just seen, which creates a need to want to find
out to satisfy themselves, therefore this is a very good way of advertising their film by creating confusion and a need to satisfy their
curiosity. The mise-en scene we can see is a very dark room, in a shopping center, this is because it shows how they need to
survive to gather food, alarming those who are watching that it is a national problem, creating a new type of fear that everyone was
affected. The use of the dark background allows us to focus on her face and her body language of being in a state of shock and
fear. The editing is again fast invisible cut shots, to show her fear and to show how fast the movie is and how there are so many
different problems which they are to overcome. The sound is non-diegetic chaotic music of the sound of screeching over the
background, this is to perhaps emphasise on the danger that they are surrounded by and to make the scene more full and scary,
there are people fighting in the background which is diegetic, shouting at each other, this sound only arises for a couple of seconds
before it fades out which makes the audience want to know what they are fighting about, the fast pace of it makes it go and fade
out which makes it seem more disorganised.
Moreover, looking at the trailer, we get the first title which is ‘’From the academy award winning Susanne Bier’’ who is a famous
danish film director, screenwriter and producer. Adding this into the trailer is important as those who have watched Susanne Bier
directed movies such as ‘In a better world’ or ‘After the wedding’ would know her quality and standards within the movie industry,
therefore those audience members who do know her will be more inclined to want to watch the movie, therefore expanding their
potential target market. Yet those who may not know who she is may just learn her name which essentially builds up popularity for
her, which is a very good advertising method. We can see that the background of this is a starry night, the use of a dark night is
again to emphasise on the isolation, the danger and that being in the dark is hard to see things which could link to being
blindfolded. The use of the beige bold lettering contrasts with the background to make it stand out, forcing the audience members
to read it. The use of the colour beige is very dull which is typically what should be used so that it does not drag too much attention
away from the general story-line. We can furthermore see that the editing was a fade, the fade was very fast but by the use of the
fade it allows a smooth transition to the titles. The sound is almost like a clock in the background and the title pops up at the same
time as the clock, in sync therefore the use of the timer could be to emphasise on how the danger is coming, and it's coming fast,
somewhat alerting audience members to a build-up that there will be danger there will be scary features. The time could also be to
tell the users that the pace of the movie is realistic, and dangerous and that they should stay on alert.
TRAILER ANALYSIS
28. Moving onto more detail with the disruption of the movie, we can denote this shot showing her side profile is a close up,
following with a close up of her face, showing the fear in her eyes. We can see they used a shot of her side profile to
somewhat give a perspective of what the passenger was seeing, this creates fear as we can see the driver of the vehicle is in
full control, and she is clearly being brainwashed and manipulated by this unknown force, this creates a sense of unknown fear
amongst the audience as they are confused as to what she saw. The use of the shot clearly depicts that she is in fear and with
her mouth nearly opened it's almost like she is in shock, she is scared of what she just saw. Making the audience need to
watch on to see if more of the movie is revealed. We can see through the mise-en scene that the woman is using very casual
basic clothes, again accentuating that they are not rich which could make the problem more realistic, more scary and
frightening to those who live similar lives of the working middle class. The editing is fades to the next shot, yet it is also at a
fast pace, this means that the trailer keeps a sense of continuity yet with the fade it allows new scenes to be added in, it
somehow makes it slightly more chaotic and confusing as the audience will not know what to expect next, the sound is again
similar to the previous shots, with each continuous fade to the next shot, it is almost like the ticking of a clock, perhaps
advocating how time is running out, creating tension and fear as it almost sounds like it is building up. These very simple
non-diegetic sounds of a clock are usually associated with being very minimal however the trailer accentuates on the ticking
perhaps link to the fact that time is running out, the problem is getting bigger etc.
Moving onto the montage section of the three-act rule, this is towards the ending of the trailer, they tend to add a montage of
the more chaotic and important parts of the movie to really grab the audience's attention, here we can see they added a small
clip from the movie. This is a high angle long shot depicting a street in the US being flooded with people, running around,
screaming and causing moral panic. The use of the high shot is to show as much of the background of people running as
possible, the more people involved it can be seen as a larger problem, which can create more fear amongst the audience as
there is nobody who can be saved. The mise-en scene shows fire smoke and this represents danger, death. The use of
including a large amount of people panicking with body language such as running away furthermore shows fear. We can see
prominently the streets have red lines down them, this could have been added subconsciously to emphasise on how red
represents and foreshadows danger. The shots used again are fast invisible cuts, this is to emphasise on the pace of the
movie again as mentioned the chaos and the way it moves in a fast pace, the audience is able to keep up with it. The sound
used is an non-diegetic overlay of a non important character saying ‘’every contact we have had with the outside has brought
death’’ this shows the audience that ‘everyone’ is being affected, the reason they used the word everyone is to target the
realism of the film and to some audience members this can be quite personal as they could empathise with audience
members, this makes them form more of an emotional connection with the characters as they begin to want them to get to
safety, therefore quenching their need to want to watch the film.
TRAILER ANALYSIS
29. Furthermore, finally we can see towards the end of the movie is the montage, this section of the
movie is very important for audience members as it suggests whether they feel like they should
watch the movie, in this scene we can see that is it a close up of the child, with a very wet head of
hair, we can see they used a close up to emphasise on how the child is cold and wet, showing how
they are in terrible and unsafe conditions. This means that the audience may feel some sympathy
towards the child as they may relate to that wet and cold feeling. Furthermore the mise-en scene
shows these dark gloomy colours which as mentioned already represent depressing sadness, death
etc. This creates an uneasy feeling which the audience feel uncomfortable with, they want to carry
on with the trailer to see if the movie gets better, and to fill their curiosity, the editing changes from
constant fades to invisible cut this is so that the pace of the trailer can be slowed down to focus on
things or to speed up to add to the chaotic side of the trailer. The sound in the background is a high
pitch note which keeps increasing in pitch and speed towards the end of the movie which is a
non-diegetic score. There is a voice-over of the child saying the creature which advocates to me that
they know and understand the dangers, which they should not because they are children which may
make the audience feel bad for them and what they had to go through.
Finally, to conclude this trailer analysis we can see that there had been many fast cuts between the
trailer, and how looking at the three- act rule the disruption had been started early to emphasise on
the problems, and to make it clearer to the audience about the storyline of the movie. We can see
they used many different titles of famous people to expand the potential audience as by using
celebrity endorsement it gives audience members an association with good quality, making them
want to watch it, showing how larger institutions are guaranteed success by using this method ( also
seen in beauty and the beast ) however we can see there had been many fades to black which may
represent how the movie is very dark and scary.
TRAILER ANALYSIS
30. Poster analysis - bird box (Sarah Priestley)
The USP ( unique selling point ) of this poster is the use of blindfolds, and
the way in which the movie poster is layed out. We can see evidently that
the use of blindfolds creates a sense of confusion, which the movie is
about, they fear something they physically cannot see. Therefore the USP
that makes this movie poster stand out is the use of blind folds, as it makes
the audience question why they have blindfolds on.
The colour scheme of the poster is pale blues, browns and very bland and
boring colours, looking at colour representation brown and blue can
represent nature, and nature can reflect upon isolation, and survival
therefore by the use of these colours, it creates connotations to audience
members that they are trying to survive. However looking at stuart hall's
representation theory the use of these colours linking to nature may instead
reflect how they are running away from something supernatural, a creature.
Looking at the composition and the layout of the poster, we can immediately
see that it is a close up denoting the main actors side profile, we can see
they chose to use a close up shot as it clearly shows the blindfolds and the
two children, we can also see that they uncluded her hand, holding onto the
second child. This could be to emphasise on not only their emotional
connection for her to care about him, but that she is scared and perhaps
finds comfort with the child. However, looking closer into her hand we can
see her nails are very dirty, advocating that she could be on a journey, or
the use of the dirt again links to the use of the natural colours. Dirt reflects
nature again emphasising on their isolation. The use of their side profiles
almost allow it to be seen from a different perspective, almost making it
surreal for audience members to see this as normally most movies with the
common conventions of horror don't show side profiles in posters such as
the movie Glass however it creates a sense of realism which some
audience members may not have felt before, making their urge to want to
watch the movie increase.
Looking at the lighting of the poster, we can see the light is being reflected
onto their faces, and behind them it fades to dark. This ombre effect from
light to dark could suggest to me that they are running away from danger,
the lighting on their face may suggest they are lost, in need for guidance.
Yet their blindfolds contradict it, making audience members question why
they need blindfolds if there is light, creating an unknown fear of danger
The setting of the picture which has been taken is unknown, this is
because it is a close up shot of their faces, therefore this shows me that
perhaps the producers were trying to create the poster with the sense of
the fear of the unknown. The sense of the unknown also links in very well
with the movie, of not being able to see what you are running from (
unknown source ) therefore the producers clear intent was the give the
audience a sense of the movie, but did not want to reveal too much as it
creates suspension. Not only does it create suspension, but rather
curiosity within audience members, therefore it gives them more of an
urge to want to watch the movie.
The font used for Bird Box is Flama Condensed, Mario Feliciano's Flama
is a unornamented sans serif, it was initially designed for signage with
mixed aspects of european and american sans serif, with the mixture of
european and american it allows the producers to make it aesthetically
pleasing to both, expanding their potential target market, increasing
revenue. We can also see the only main title they have is the name Bird
Box and netflix, for a movie poster with the typical conventions it does not
correlate with competition, with the minimalistic design of not having more
information again links to the theory of not being able to see what u fear,
this could create confusion within audience members as they may want to
know more about the movie, but they cant as a result creating an urge to
watch the movie. We can also see the placement of the title, this is in the
bottom middle, this is because it really draws the audience's eyes down,
forcing them to look at the title and engraves it into audience members
head, reminding them that they should watch it. Furthermore, we can see
the ‘Netflix’ title at the top of the poster, the use of netflix widens their
potential target market as those who have netflix will be able to relate it to
being of a good quality and of a good standard furthermore persuading
those to watch it. Audience members who do not have netflix will still
know netflixs’ standard, and it creates a need to want to watch it .
Looking at the shot used as already said it is a close up, however looking at the mise-en scene we can see her body
language seems frightened therefore it shows potential audience members that the movie is scary, yet by the dirt used
and the greasy hair, it creates a sense of being in a thriller. This makes audience members want to feel that form of
excitement. Moreover, looking at different ways in which audience members interpret given media pieces ( stuart hall )
for some audience members this picture could represent the fears that come with being a parent.
Looking at different opinions of the poster, we can see evidently that the poster conveys a dramatic tension that fits very
well with the trailer, representing isolation, survival and the typical conventions of a post apocalyptic thriller.
Furthermore, the marketing skills embedded
into this trailer is evident, through the use of
using a highly popular actor ‘Sandra Bullock’
who acted in films such as the blind side or
the proposal gives audience members a
taste that the film will be of a high standard,
expanding the potential target market.
31. Website analysis - bird box sarah
Looking at this website analysis, this is the official
website for Bird box, this is a netflix account, the use
of them advertising this movie on netflix gives the
producers of Bird Box a platform to which they have
a larger potential to grow and expand. Netflix is a
multi million dollar brand with a very high market
share within the film industry therefore by using this
platform, those audience members who watch netflix
movies will be able to immediately associate this to
having a high quality therefore they would be more
inclined to watch it in comparison to movies which
are not given a platform on netflix.
We can see that they used a similar photo to the one
on the poster, showing her side profile, this creates
a stronger sense of branding for Bird box as it
creates more recognition for their movie, this
promotes and encourages more people to want to
watch it. We can further analyse within the image
that it is a close up, however without the children.
This could be used to emphasise on her isolation in
the movie, and how she is the main character, again
using Sandra Bullock to show more potential
audience members that the quality is good, and
those who are familiar with her will be more likely to
want to watch the movie. Furthermore, we can also
see that they used a similar colour scheme again
creating not only a stronger sense of branding but
allows consumers to be able to see the correlating
theme and codes and conventions of a typical horror
and thriller.
The use of the font is repeated on the website, this
is to show audience members it has a significant
title, one which is more familiar and constantly used
allows us to understand the significance of the
movie, as the title is one-off. This could infer that the
movie is of a high quality as it is very specific to its
needs. .
Looking into more detail on the website, there is a link which says ‘’Watch now—without
signing up’’this again allows netflix to not only gain more consumers for their company,
but it also allows Bird Box to advertise and promote their movie to consumers who are
perhaps not willing to subscribe to netflix, which increases their overall revenue stream.
Offering a feature like this means that they are more able to offer their movie to a larger
demographic.
In the top corner it says, ‘’join now’’ or ‘’sign in’’ this is for people who do watch netflix,
this is a very good promotion method for netflix as it gives their consumers a larger
variety of movies to watch, therefore giving netflix a better reputation, furthermore
increasing their market share and Bird Boxes box office.
Furthermore, the website shows a sense of interactivity, this is because at the bottom of
the website it says ‘’questions?’’ and proceeds with a phone number, this shows that
netflix and bird-box are somewhat interactive for those below the line audience members
who take interest and have further questioning about the film.
Moreover, looking more at the website we can see as we scroll down, they offer
audience members the chance to watch the trailer, therefore those who wanted to see
what the movie was about, they are given the chance to watch it, and it fits in very well
with the poster on the website, making the sense of branding become stronger. By
offering trailer viewings, it increases the potential for more viewers to want to watch the
movie.
Looking at the statistics, Bird-Box had been
seen by 45 million people from netflix, therefore
this was under a week. This advocates to me
that there is a very evident oligopoly within the
film industry, because through the use of netflix
and social media, netflix was able to get
millions of people to view a movie that would
have otherwise not have gotten that much
attention, showing how smaller institutions have
competitive disadvantages of success.
The bird-box poster on the front of the website
different compared to other typical horror-thriller
post apocalyptic films such as ‘’The quiet
place’’ or ‘’ I am Legend’’, this is because we
have been introduced the the characters in a
non ‘linear’ way, the first way we are introduced
through the use of the trailers, through the use
of posters is with the characters with blind-folds
on. Within audience members this can create
help a shallow tone and creates a strong sense
of fear of the unknown, as we physically cannot
see what they are running from.
In conclusion, Bird Box producers collaborated
with netflix as they knew netflix’ platform was
massive, and it was ought to be a success. By
the use of branding throughout their posters
and movies, it creates a strong sense of
recognition which makes it easier for audience
members to want to watch the movie. We can
see through the mise-en scene the use of
colours are very dark-toned, natural colours to
give a sad and eerie tone yet at the same time
emphasise on how she is lost in nature, the use
of the mountain in the background which was
revealed on the poster really accentuates on
her isolation in the forest which is shown in the
trailer.
32. A quiet place: Trailer analysis
Firstly The movie the quiet place falls into many different genre, the movie is
said to be a horror, drama, science fiction and thriller. As you can see on the
right the trailer starts off with a close up medium shot of a little child playing
with a toy, nothing seems scary about this scene since the lighting in this shot
is bright leading to the audience assuming this movie is a bright and happy
story as well as the diegetic sound of the plane toy. However, a non diegetic
sound begins to speed up creating tension and a half a second close up
medium shot is shown of the father holding a son, a close up is used so that
the audience is focused on the emotions of the father which is scared, this
leads to tension because the build up of the non diegetic music getting louder
and the father being scared brings fear to the audience which slowly shows
that the trailer is beginning to become more horror. A title is then shown which
reads “IF THEY HEAR YOU” which is shown for 1 second. This sudden flash
which an increased non diegetic music creates fear again and “HEAR” is the
only word in red to bring attention to the word, the color red shows danger
because of the many danger signs that use red to make up psychologically
aware of it. The next shot is an over the shoulder shot showing the father
running as fast as he can towards his son as the sound again is increasing
and a sudden title is shown again for a less than a second which reads “THEY
HUNT YOU” and again “HUNT” is the only word written in red again showing
danger. As you can see the words “HEAR” and “HUNT” are words that bring
fear making the audience question who can hear them and who is hunting
them again creating suspense and tension. This shot it followed by a the
father looking to the right as he runs towards his son, followed by a shot of the
forest which may answer the question of the audience of who is hunting and
listening to them creating more fear. Lastly, a full shot of the boy standing in
the distance is shown. This five second opening of the trailer is shown in
flashes each shot pops up for half a second as the non diegetic music gets
louder each flash, flashes are known to trigger some people which may be the
reason they chose to do this.
Dana
33. This opening of the trailer then ends with the title of the movie, the non
diegetic music has stopped to bring attention to the title. The colors of the
title are dark the writing is in white whereas the background has dark black
with grey smoke rising. Black can have negative connotations, it’s the colour
of death, fear and grief. It’s more generally associated with power and
elegance when it comes to branding and marketing. It’s bold, powerful and a
little mysterious and it can be intimidating and unapproachable as well. The
scenes then get brighter as you can see in shot number 2 there's more
lighting but its a close up of the woman's face bringing attention to her
emotions as a diegetic sound of the news plays in the background to show
what she's worried about. Shot 3 is also brighter but mostly blue showing the
father alone high up on a ram, blue is a calming color that represents
intelligence and responsibility. Blue can also signify depth and power,
showing that maybe the father has the responsibility of his family showing his
power. Blue can also associate with tears and hence, sadness, since feeling
blue does mean your feeling down. This shot is also a full body long shot
showing how high up he is looking down at his family. The next shot which is
number 4 is a high angle long shot showing a young girls feet slowly tip
towing with a diegetic sound of the floor creaking, the shot then changes to a
medium shot of the wall (picture 5) adding a sudden non diegetic sound
slowly getting louder as the camera pans showing the mark left on the wall.
The sound adds tension and this shot is much darker than the previous one
to keep the audience on edge and scared. As so soon as the mother pulls
down the lever in this medium close up shot (number 6) the scenes begin to
become dark, intense and fast speed scaring the audience and the non
diegetic dramatic music begins to play as well to add to that. The next scene
shows a close up of red lights turning on which like i mentioned there's
connotation behind this since the color red shows danger because of the
many danger signs and red is used to make you psychologically aware of it.
Dana
34. Furthermore, the scenes continue to get dark lighting since the trailer has
transitioned to a more horror theme now. It continues to show what appear
to be the horrifying parts of the movie as you can see in shot 1 a medium
point of view shot is shown of one of the boys back turned and the other
face shocked. The audience not knowing whos point of you this is making
the young boy scared brings a sense of fear and the non diegetic high
pitched music adds to that. More dark lighting shots are shown like 2, 3 and
4. Shot 3 is a close up of the father holding a gun the lighting is dark except
for where his eyes are, to bring attention to how focused he is. The gun
could represent his power and even show that he is the “man” of the house
meaning he protects the children and his wife hence why he's the one using
the gun. Shot 4 shows the mother on the other hand frightened and again
the lighting is dark except for her eyes to bring attention to her worried and
petrified face as she tells her children to be quiet showing that maybe
women are more emotional. This could be showing the stereotypical roles of
men and women and their roles in their families. The trailer ends with shot 5
showing a scene of the mother on the verge of screaming with a high
pitched non diegetic sound to add tension, the lighting in this scene is
focused on her face only to bring attention to the her emotions which is also
why a extreme close up is used as well.
Dana
35. A Quiet Place: poster analysis
The lighting on this poster is dark, and darkness is
often used to convey negativity such as evil,
death or the unknown. The fact that she's sitting in
this dark bathroom all alone and the absence of
light in this room symbolises evil and fear and
creates a mystery. The only lighting shown is on
the womans face which shows importance and
focuses on the emotions on her face, which is
fear.
A shadow of a tall figure is shown in this poster and we can see that the woman is looking towards it in fear.
An average human is typically not this tall which could mean this is a creature since the figure shows a
extreme tall and long armed creature. This hidden connotation should symbiosis the fact that the genre is
horror and since the creature is not shown and only its shadow is, it gives the audience a sneak peak on what
might be features in the movie. Shadows can also act as an action, like when you shadow, or follow,
someone in this case the shadow has a negative connotations and it
shows that someone is watching her.
Similar to the trailer the word “HEAR” and
“HUNT” are in red, these words bring fear
making the audience question who can hear
them and who is hunting them again creating
suspense and tension. The color red is the color
of blood, it has historically been associated with
sacrifice, danger, and courage. Modern surveys
in Europe and the United States show red is also
the color most commonly associated with heat,
activity, passion, sexuality, anger, love, and joy.
In this case it's more of anger and danger. Since
the word hunt could mean someone is hunting
her and the word hear means someone is
listening to her which could bring danger to the
woman. It could also be in red to bring attention
to the words the movie is called the quiet place
meaning that it should be quiet and that every
sound they make they are heard.
The two main colors in this poster are grey and black. The color
black is associated with power, fear, mystery, strength, authority,
elegance, formality, death, evil, and aggression, authority,
rebellion, and sophistication. In this case black is used to
represent death and evil since it is a poster for a horror movie
and black brings a sense of horror and fear when i comes to
death and evil. Grey does carry some negative connotations as
well, particularly when it comes to depression and loss. Its
absence of color makes it dull.
Dana
The font used for the title of the poster is similar
to the one used a the end of the trailer it's a
simple and not to detailed font this maybe to
make sure the audience focus more on the
image, it also has quite a vintage old font to
match the house which is also looks quite old
and not too modern. White is used so that is
can show clearly against the dark lighting
picture.
36. A Quiet Place: website analysis
Dana
The website that “A Quiet Place” is featured on is on
Netflix which is already a very popular streaming
website, this already will help the movie “A Quiet
Place” get distributed to a large amount of audience.
However this does not stop them from advertising.
As you can see at the top right corner there is an
option to join now for those who don't have Netflix
already and their branding strategy is using red to
attract the audience into seeing this. As i mentioned
red is commonly used for danger and stops sign
because the color red has the longest wavelength, it
is the least scattered. So, this signal can be seen
from a very long distance. Many traffic signs use the
color red because it is the most visible color in
daylight. As well the fact that red stands out against
backgrounds of white or black, and in this case
netflix uses a black dark background to bring out the
more vibrant colors. Once the audience has seen
“JOIN NOW” in red they will see next to “unlimited tv
shows and movies” which will give them a bit of
information on what they are signing themselves up
to, however when you click on join now it will
obviously give you more detailed explanation on
what you're getting when you join. Not only does it
have this on the top right corner but it has in at the
bottom right corner just in case you missed it, this
branding strategy makes sure the audience doesn't
miss what netflix is trying to provide for their
audience by putting it twice. Netflix’s brand name is
also written in red which netflix mentioned they did
this because their primary logo is red on a black
background “to create a premium cinematic feel as
we continue to set the industry standard for original
content.”
Moving onto the title “A QUIET PLACE” you can see similarly to the trailer and the poster the producers of a quiet place keep the same idea with
one word in red. In this case it's “QUIET” this kind of gives a sneak peak into the movie if you really think about it, because the word quiet is in
red as if it dangerous, and the movie is about staying quiet or you will be in danger. This may be one of the reasons they did this or as i
mentioned before they may just want to attract the audience with the color red. The font of the title is simple and not too detailed this may be
because they want to match netflixs simple branding aesthetic. Looking underneath the title, Netflix provides more information about the movies
such as the fact that it’s “16+” , its length which is “1 hour and 30 mins” , the year it was made, and its genre. This information is important
especially “16+” since this may stop people under 16 to watch the movie and, the genre being “horror” may also stop some people from watching
it as well since they may not like this genre. However, for people that do like this genre you're actually able to click the word “horror” written and it
will take you to more horror movies that netflix has which may not benefit the “A quiet place” but it will benefit Netflix by making sure if the
audience doesn't like “A Quiet Place” they have other options.
Looking at the image netflix has used to advertise “A Quiet Place” compared to the poster and trailer this image has more lighting and isn't as
dark. The lighting is mostly focused on the father and sons face in this quite intense picture of the father shutting his sons mouth close, you
can see the veins in his hands showing how aggressively he's doing it. The lighting helps the audience focus on the emotions of both
character showing the son looking at his dad in fear. The young boy is wearing quite colorful clothes which may show he's innocent and quite
child-like. Overall the image does represent the movie which is what it should do since netflix has to choose a picture wisely that will
represent the movie and attract the audience, this image showing the father over powering his son by shutting his mouth while his son’s
scared tells the story in a way since they have to stay quiet or they are in danger.
Underneath is a small description of the
movie which states “Cut off from the rest of
the world, a tight-knit family lives in constant
fear of making any sound that will attract
terrifying alien creatures.” This is important to
include since people may not want to watch
the trailer and just want a quick description
so they can see if they are interested in
watching this movie.
37. Doctor sleep: trailer analysis (roba)
The movie doctor sleep is a drama and horror movie and as you can see from the trailer it is a hybrid of drama and horror supporting steve Neale's theory. The trailer
starts with as establishing act from 0:00 to 0:24 and the first shot the audience sees is a long high angled shot of a car driving in the dark in the mountains, the shot is
also an establishing shot as it is at the start and used to explain what is happening the reason for the use of a high angle shot is so that the car and the rider appear
small, vulnerable and helpless which creates the feeling of dread as the audience see them as vulnerable people which would instinctively make the audience to want to
protect them, the use of the long shot is so that the audience can see the full picture and what is happening so that they can interpret it the way they want. For the
Mise-en-scene the setting it is set in is perfect for both drama and horror, as the person is driving alone which creates a sense of sadness and a lonesome feeling which
would be associated with a drama another reason why is that one of the semantics of a drama is dark weather which you can see in this shot. another reason why it's a
good representation of horror is that for syntactic and semantics the movie setting is in a deserted dark road with only the person's car on it and it creates a sense of
alienation as the car is on its own. The setting also creates a sense of anxiousness as the environment appears to be cold which might reflect in the audience as
coldness is usually associated with a lack of warmth like happiness and it will make them feel uncomfortable with a sense of apprehension, the person being on a high
spot in the mountain will also bring a sense of foreboding to the audience as it is dark and the car is on its own and there is snow which might mean the road is slippery
which might cause the car to slip and fall down the mountain. You can also see how the only lighting is the car's headlight and the car is surrounded by darkness and
shadows which might signify how the person driving is surrounded by darkness and unhappiness but he still has a bit of light in him which might also associate with the
‘shine’ that the movie is portraying meaning he still has a bit of shine in him but it is being slowly taken away by his darkness. You can also see how the shadows in this
shot are representing mystery and evil but also gives a somber effect. The sound in this particular shot is a non- diegetic recorded sound of something like a bell
chiming which might indicate to the audience that the time is up, which would create a sort of uneasiness in them which is suitable as it will warn them about the rest of
the trailer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOzFZxB-8cw
Establishing act: aprox 0:00 to 0: 24
38. The shot then fades to darkness which might indicate how the darkness is surrounding everything. And after a few seconds, the
shot does a crane shot from up and down this is to show the infamous door and its surroundings. The mise-en-scene in this in this
shot is how there is a dirty lamp old-looking lamp that is the only thing that is bringing light in but the lamp stool looks old and dirty
which would signify the age of the house to show that the house is old but not old enough to not have electricity the lighting is an
also in a way pale yellow which might symbolize how it is giving a sense of caution as to not go any further, this will create a sense
of awareness to the audience as they would want to know why there should be caution when proceeding, there is also still
shadows that looks as if it is growing which might symbolize how darkness will snuff out the light ( the light being the lamp) the
colour pale brown of the door would symbolize a sense of stability which would in a way imply how the character is back home and
back to where he belongs. A passive reader will look at the writing and be confused as they do not understand what the term
REDRUM could mean whereas an active reader would look at it and understand it means MURDER especially if they are a fan of
the shining which will create excitement in them and also trepidation as they know the movie will be good. You can see how the
door is broken which might denote how he might come from a broken home or that he is very unstable which would create a sense
of alarm in the audience as they wonder what will happen next.
39. The disturbance starts with a high angle long shot of an isolated area, the reasoning for the use of this shit is to show how the
area appears to have no one in sight and doesn't have much greenery in it. The mise en scene for it is that the lighting appears
to be dark and gloomy making the landscape appear darker and depressing which helps support that the movie is also a drama
and is a horror, this lighting will also affect the audience as they will wonder why is this area so isolated. The colours used in this
shot mainly are green and brown the brown soil represents how there is no sign of life with life being the green which is the
vegetation, this supports how it is a drama as something appearing lifeless will make the audience the audience upset as the
feel of it is melancholy especially as you see the contrast between the greenery and the soil. The sound in this shot is a soft
non-diegetic piano note which adds a calming effect to the audience as it is soft and quiet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOzFZxB-8cw
disturbance: aprox: 0: 30 to 1:20
40. The scene then moves on to a medium shot of a man in ed, the reasoning for the use of this shot is so that the audience can see where
the problem is without having to focus on it and when they do they will be startled but also wonder whose arm is that. The mise-en-scene
in this shot is how the lighting appears to be dark lighting which indicates that it's at night and the audience will understand that the
connotation of night, in this case, is that paranormal occurrences happen which means they will be very aware and will pay attention as
they would want to know what will happen next. As you can see from the man's body language and facial expression the man appears to
be scared but cautious and aware as if he knows what is happening and that this happened to him multiple times which would make the
audience wonder how does he know all of this and how is he calm about it they would also wonder whose arm is it for as the arm appears
to be holding the man a=in a loving warm way not as if it's going to harm him. The use of colours in this scene appears to only have dark
colours that set the mood for the audience as they will only see dark colours without any light. The sound as he gets out of the bed gives
the audience a foreboding feeling as it seems tense and appears to be getting louder, the sound then turns abruptly loud as the hand tries
to clutch at his arm which might be a symbolism as the person is dead and is trying to hold onto the life which is the man. The man then
throws himself back on the floor and you can see how terrified he is from his eyes as they are wide with a shock which will again terrify the
audience as he isn't calm anymore and you can also hear the diegetic sound of gasping which will again shock and might cause panic in
the audience as he appears even more scared.
41. The shot them moves on after seconds to a girl walking away from a movie theatre with a man walking behind her. This scene
supports laura mulvey’s theory as to how women are represented in the media as the girl appears alone, vulnerable, and scared
with a man following her which is usually how women are represented in the media. You can also see from the mise-en-scene how
the place is isolated and dark and you can't see anyone else other than them which would make the audience anxious towards the
girl as it appears as if the man behind her is following her and walking with purpose towards her. You can also see how the white of
her shirt which would represent her innocence which also supports the theory of a males gaze and also how the youth are
represented as ignorant and naive, and you can also see from the blue colour of her skirt how it represents her confidence and that
she appears trustworthy which would make the audience instantly like her and the audience might also form an attachment to her
as they personally identify themselves in her shoes as she seems like a relatable character who seems to be struggling with
something that many girls are struggling with today. The man appears to be wearing a hat as if he wants to hide due to shame or so
that he is unrecognizable which adds to the dread of the audience.
42. The montage part of the trailer starts with a shot of people in the forest then it has a medium shot of women and a girl in a forest in front of a lake.
The mise en scene in this shot shows the lighting appears bright but still doesn't appear bright enough but compared to lots of scenes in the trailer it
is bright it is also morning and they are in front of a blue look which would give the audience a sense of calmness and security, the trees and the
greens that surround them a sense of life and safety, these all would give the audience a false sense of security so they will not expect what
happens next. The girl is wearing a rose pink dress that portrays the young girl as a small young girl that is gentle and sweet, she is also wearing a
white shirt underneath that represents her innocence which might hint at her innocence and purity that she would talk to a stranger as her body
language seems reluctant to approach the woman sitting in the base of the tree that has been cut that might also imply how she is surrounded by
death and darkness as the only light thing approaching her is the girl, the girl also seems to be clean and well kept which would imply that she is
loved and has a caring family which might also mean that she lives in a bubble of a sort which would make it understandable why she would blindly
trust a stranger. The women appear to be wearing a hat which might imply how she does not wanna be seen clearly and wants to stay hidden the
hat also appears to be black which would imply how her thoughts and mind is a dark evil place, she also appears to be wearing a blue-black dress
and holding a flower which would again put the girl in a false sense of security and would also put the audience ina false sense of security as to why
would someone want to hear a small child. You can also see from the positioning and body language how the girl is reluctant and nervous and
curious (this might make the audience who have kids be more worried nad attached as they would not want to see their child in this position)
whereas the woman seems to be a calm ad at ease showing how she is confident that nothing will happen to her. The sound in this scene is a
non-diegetic recorded sound of a musical instrument that sounds as if it is giving a warning which would make the audience have a sense of dread
and scared for the young girl especially with the speaker saying “they will eat what shines” which will alarm the audience as usually what shines are
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOzFZxB-8cw
montage: aprox: 1:20 to 2:16
43. In the next shot, you can see how it's an over the shoulder shot of the man looking tired and odd as he looks in the mirror.
The man looks exhausted and scared but he also looks like he just had an epiphany as he realizes finally what REDRUM
means as he sees it in the mirror and reads it. The camera also stops focusing on the man but starts focusing closely on the
word so that the audience also knows that REDRUM means MURDER. This will then create a sense of apprehension in the
audience as they will wonder why the word keeps appearing and why does it appear to be the other way round and who is
the word for. The lighting at this is dark showing how there is only darkness and gloominess. The word also appears to be
written messily with big handwriting and in capital letters signifying and drawing attention to its meaning as it appears a lot
of times in this movie and the last movie. The music also seems to be as if it's drawing a conclusion or a realization that
would hint at what the audience would be feeling at the moment when they realize its meaning.
44. The scene then moves on after a while to a medium shot of the seating area and where the elevator is located inside a hotel. We can
see from the mise en scene how the area is old and deteriorating which would again hint at how old the hotel is and that it is slowly
falling apart which would give the audience a sense of uneasiness and will make them feel uncomfortable as they will want to know
they are in this particular hotel but fans of the shining will know and understand but they will also be exciting as they are seeing the
hotel again after years. The lighting in this a=shot appears to be a shadowy light that would represent how shadows rule and control
this hotel as nothing is hidden from them. You can also see how there is a red liquid that appears out of nowhere but would hint hat it
si blood which would be suitable for a horror movie especially as red symbolizes danger, anger, and aggression. The blood will also
connote to the audience that someone is hurt badly and there is a lot of people who are hurt and bleeding for it to like that which will
give them a sense of fright and shock, they would also wonder where it came from. The sound in this is loud and non-diegetic this is
so that the audience's attention is captured and they pay close attention so they will focus. These are all ways that the trailer is made
so it can capture the audience's attention and keep it but give them information about what's happening but not too much. We will
also use these ways so that it can help make our trailer good.
45. Doctor sleep: poster analysis (roba)
Narrative: we can tell that this movie is a horror due to lots of reasons such as the man's facial
expression seems serious and determined which would make the audience know that this movie has
no comedy in it, the man's face is also shadowed which gives it a sinister feel to it, his body language
appears confident and resolved as he walks towards the boy, which also presents a feel that he is
walking towards danger with courage and confidence which makes the audience understand that he
is moving towards a threat understanding its risks. The boy is facing us which makes it seem as if he
is overconfident and unafraid that anyone will do anything while he is not looking it also might portray
an= child's innocence as he again is not afraid, his body language appears relaxed and calm as he
patiently waits for the man to come near him instead of also trying to get to him he just patiently wait
for him to walk near him which makes him exude a feeling of superiority over him as he appears even
slightly bored. You can also see the stark difference between the two and how they are dressed as
the boy is on a tricycle wearing overalls appearing bored and slightly mocking as the man appears
serious and firm. Their positioning is also significant as in a way they equal in power as the man
appears taller than him but the boy is not in a hurry to correct that as he doesn't try to stand up and
appear taller showing again how he is slightly mocking the man, but the boy appears larger than the
man which in a way makes them equal in power. These are all ways they draw the audience in as
they make their curiosity peaked.
USP: one way in which it has a unique selling point is how it has one of the most iconic of the movie
the shining in it (this movie is a sequel to the movies the shining) most of everyone knows the movie
by the boy that is riding a toy in a hotel, so the audience of the movie the shining will see this and will
immediately want to know what it is as it is recreating one of the most iconic movie scenes, and they
will also see how it says that it is chapter 2 of the shining which will make them immediately
interested and wanting to watch it. This makes this movie poster have a USP as you won't find any
other movie poster with this scene. The shining movie audience will immediately recognize the boy
for who he is but will wonder who this new man is which will make them immediately excited and
46. Doctor sleep: poster analysis (roba)
Colours: the color used in this in this is mainly red but it has a lot of other colours such as
white, black and blue. The colours are very much relevant to this movie's genre as it is
horror, therefore, it will have lots of usage of strong dark colours mainly red and black as
they are associated with danger, death, mystery, anger, and evil. The colours red and black
being used a lot works well as it will signify these terms as they are associated with the
colours which will make the audience immediately understand that this movie is a horror
which would make it appealing to them as they would want to know the storyline. They also
attract the audience due to its use of colors at certain points for example how they used the
colours red on the kid who we can see in the back which is ironic as kids are usually
associated with innocence but this boy is wearing a red shirt which means he's dangerous
and he is also on a toy that has two black wheels which might imply how he is carrying evil
as the toy he is playing on with the black wheels is carrying him, he is also wearing a jean
blue overall which might signify his calmness and that he has some power which is
questioning as he is only a child which make the audience question it. You can also see how
the doors on the sides are shadowed so that they appear black which gives them a sinister
mysterious look that would attract the audience as they wonder what is inside those doors.
The man walking towards the boy is wearing a black suit which gives him a feeling of
authority, stability, and strength, this will make the audience wonder who is this person and
why does he appear confident. The reason white is used is so that you can see the stark
resemblance between the colours which would immediately attract the audience. They target
the correct audience as mainly horror fans will be looking for a poster that has this type of
colour scheme.
47. Written text: the title of the movie is written in large white font in the middle of the
poster, the reason for that might be so that it catches the audience's attention as it is
written in white which is a stark contrast against the red and is written in the middle
which would captivate the audience’s attention to it first which makes it memorable and
in a way loud, the font used also gives it a dark vibe which is suitable as it is a horror. It
also has a tagline at the top that says 'dare to go back' which might excite the
audience who are fans of the shining as they will know that this means they will see
the iconic hotel again which would most likely excite them, it is also relative to the
horror theme as it uses the word dare which makes it seem as seem dangerous and
risky so the audience would want to know why. I believe this movie’s target audience is
a horror fan due to its use of colouring, positioning, and texts. It also makes it exciting
for fans of Stephen king as everyone knows him or of him because of his famous
horror books as horror is his theme so anyone who looks at the poster and sees that
it's written by Stephen king will be immediately drawn to it. It also includes its release
date so that the audience knows when to expect it so they will be informed when they
should expect it, the director's name is also written and he is also known for his
famous horror movies like ouija which would make the audience understand this is a
horror.
48. Layout: the image is laid out in a way to show the significance of the relationship of the two
characters and how the man is walking threateningly towards the boy while the boy is just
waiting which shows us how their relationship is not a good one and is tense and bad
especially the man has to walk to the end of the hallway to get to the boy which might signify
their brittle relationship or that they are not close to each other. It is obvious from the movie
poster that it is a horror due to its colouring and written texts and the actor's positioning, the
reason it is laid out in this manner is to show that it is a horror. The movie poster is set in the
iconic hallway of the movie the shining but they put it in red lighting to show that it has evil
within it. The top of the poster has the tagline which is used to entice the audience into
watching the movie as it i'll capture their attention, the title is in the middle and is written in big
writing so that it is recognizable as it was a book written by Stephen king which is why his
name is above it so that the audience can read the title and immediately see that Stephen
king's name is written in it which would make them know it's a horror movie.
Images: the title of the film is doctor sleep which would peak the audience's attention as they
would be confused as there is no such thing as a doctor's sleep which would immediately
catch their attention. There are no stars names written as they are relying on the Stephen
king's name to be recognizable and the director's name, these two names are famous as they
appear in horror movies a lot. The movie uses a lot of red in the posters as red symbolizes evil
in danger which is perfect for this movie poster as it is a horror therefore it will attract the
correct audience as they will know that red means danger as their mind has already
associated that colour with it. You can see that the man is walking from a doorway that has a
brighter lighter shade of red and he is walking away from it which might signify that he is
leaving the light side so that he can fight the other side as he is walking with severity and
determination without a look of regret which would be what a hero would look like as they fight
evil, this gives us the idea that this man is the ‘hero’ in this story.
49. Doctor sleep: website analysis (roba)
When you enter the website the
first thing that pops up is the
trailer which is useful as it will
entice the audience to watch
the movie, as they will be drawn
to the trailer
Then when you click out of the trailer you
will see this page which is the home page
of the website, you can also see that at
the bottom that it has information about
the movie’s producer, distributor, privacy
and credits. You can also see at the very
bottom it says that its 2018 warner bros
all rights reserved which states that its a
warner bros, which means that warner
bros verified that this movie belongs to
them.
You can also see that at the very top it
has different segments and each one
can direct you to to a different part of
the website such as videos,
synopsis,gallery and its different
social media pages this is useful as it
makes it easy to use and can be used
by anyone without putting in to much
work and effort.
The use of the colour yellow
here in this website is
because the colour yellow
demands attention which
means that it will attract
anyone who stumbles upon
the website and sees the
yellow which will make them
look at it, it also symbolizes
caution which is suitable for
the movie as the movie is
horror which means you will
have to be be careful.
The movie website also made sure to
add that it was the next chapter in
the shining story so that there won't
be any confusion whether or not this
movie is linked to the other movie.
The font used for it is also different
so that it will stand out.
The movie title is also the buggest as it
will attract the most attention and it needs
to be memorable which means they will
have in bold huge writing.
The picture used on the movie websites
resembles the movie poster of the movie
the shining, this means that when they
were setting up this website they wanted
the audience to know and make sure they
knew that this movie is associated with
the shining movie. The resemblance in
this is that it is seen as if they are both
behind something that is covering parts of
their face and that at the outline of
something that is broken and jagged.
You can also see from the picture that the
person appears worried hinting at it is a
mystery and blackness hints that it is
something sinister.
The movie website also makes
sure that everyone is aware
that it is released and you can
watch it in cinemas, it says it in
bold writing and in a different
font so that it won't be
associated with the movie and
will be seen as an external
information about it
http://www.doctorsleepmovie.net/?synopsis
In my opinion i believe this website homepage is not the best as it
doesn't truly convey that it's a horror movie on sight but you need to
have brief background information about the movie, director and who it
was written by to understand that it is a horor. It also doesn't have the
effect a horror movie would have as the colours used don't match what
would be used o a horrormovie.
50. Doctor sleep: website analysis (roba)
When you click on the section that says video
you will immediately see the trailer making it
easy and nice to use and understand and it is
a quick access. You will also see how it has
two types of trailers the full one an the teaser
which makes it nice, easy and concluded so
they don't have to search far. You will also
see the option if you want to download it
which is suitable for those who wanna see the
trailer online or want to edit it.
You will also see the synopsis option which is
perfect if someone doesn't want to view the
trailer as some people believe the trailer will
spoil everything. They will then have the option
to see the synopsis. Which will give them a brief
recap of the movie the shining so the audience
can remember and it also gives a very brief
explanation of what the movie is about. It also
talks about cast members and what are they
most famous for. It also says the production label
and who they will be distributed by and when will
they start letting the audience see it.
The gallery section is also used as
another way to advertise their movie
as it will be good for the audience who
want to know more about the movie
and how it looks like without getting
any full information on the movie as
they want it to be a mystery when they
watch it.
