This follows the conventions of a well designed magazine because it uses a good
colour scheme which you can see clearly with all of the different colours showing. It has
a maximum of 5 colours which is great because it doesn’t go over the top with too many
colours so people do not get confused with what they are reading. The magazine is
colour coded so it makes it easier to read. It also has a normal title which you can see
at the top of the page in the right place so the reader can see it clearly. This magazine
is challenging conventions because not many magazines put the main image in front of
the masthead. This magazine challenges conventions because there are a few
coverlines which are shown on the front page of the magazine but not many so it does
not give away all of the articles in the magazine which is very useful. This magazine
uses conventions because shown in the bottom left of this magazine is the barcode
which gives information about the stock lines.
This magazine follows the conventions because it has a skyline at the top of the page
which states it is the UK’s biggest music magazine. This is shown as developing
conventions because not many magazines do this which helps the magazine stand out
and state something. This magazine uses conventions and includes a puff shape which
contains information about one of the articles. A puff can either contain information or
quotes. This magazine also follows conventions by putting the masthead in front of the
image and not behind so it stands out to show what there magazine is called. This
magazine uses 3 colours on the front cover of the magazine which makes the magazine
effective and so the magazine looks professional. This is shown as developing
conventions because of its use of colours. The magazine is well colour coordinated
because the coverlines are all one colour, the text is all one colour, and the masthead
uses the different colours. This is useful so people do not get confused when reading
the front cover. The main image challenges conventions because this shot is taken in a
different setting to any other main image which makes the magazine more interesting.
Using, Developing and Challenging
Conventions
Occupation Social Groups
Group A- This group consists of Bankers, Lawyers, Doctors, Surgeons, Scientists higher
management workers. People in this group normally live in expensive houses and are higher class in
what they do such as there holidays. They buy expensive clothes, cars and will pay more for anything
they like. They do not engage in social media, film or music.
Group B- This group consists of teachers, middle management workers and fairly well paid
professionals. The people in this group live in their own homes and are very independent from
government benefits. They own a mortgage, health insurance, reliable cars, give their children private
education. They buy good named brands, and are overall happy with there life. They have no time for
media, film or music.
Group C- This consists of Electricians and plumbers etc. They normally live in a rented
property and receive government benefits. They have cars which are also used for work. They shop
for discounted brands and food in local stores. They spend there leisure time at local attractions.
They read the Sun newspaper.
Group D- This group consists of manual workers such as, drivers, post sorters and
warehouse pickers. People in this group have a tight budget and they live on rented properties by
a housing agency. They shop in discount shops such as, Lidl or Aldi. They also have no interest
in fashion or cars. They read The Sun or Metro.
Group E- This group contains students, the unemployed and pensioners. People in this
group live on benefits. They shop for bargain clothes and discount food. They don’t care what
fashion brand they shop for. They also spend a lot of time watching TV. They have no predefined
habits that they are interested in as-well. They read the free media such as Metro or Telegraph.
Mis-en-Scene: This is a French phrase and
means ‘placing on stage’ The term is used when
the overall look and feel of a magazine design is
under discussion. Set or studio design, lighting,
costume or clothes choices, location or props, and
make-up.
Example of Magazine cover appealing to a
social group
This magazine cover is aimed at social group E which is for
teenagers or unemployed. The props and costume in this picture
is going to be related to teenagers because that is the sort of
clothing that they wear. The costume is very laid back and does
not stand out as much as Drake. The lighting in this picture is
blacked out except for Drake which makes him become more
drawn out of the main image. Also the writing on Drakes shirt
which is unstoppable may suggest that the magazine cover is the
best and helps promote the magazine. The Mis-en-scene of the
cover is very appealing and well layed out. The layout of the
writing has been well ordered because it is not covering the main
image what every teenager wants to see but the writing is still
bold to tell the readers what the articles are going to be about.
The camera angle for the main image is very strait forward which
makes the image stand out more to all teenagers. Drake is used
in the main image because he is very well-known and a role
model to many teenagers. This magazine uses conventions such
as puffs on the right hand side of the magazine which a younger
target audience will like a lot. The younger target audience will
also like the good use of vibrant colours, which will appeal to
them a lot.
Magazine Institutions and Distribution
What is a media institution?
A media institution is a company, business or establishment that is involved in at least one or above
of the following including distribution, marketing and production surrounding any media product.
Distribution
Making the product available for customers to get from the shops that it has been distributed
to.
Marketing
Talking to customers about the value of the product. This will be done through promotion
with the value brand and service.
Production
Creating the product so when it is finished it can be distributed.
Technologies and Processes
Physical Technology
Photographical cameras are used in
modern day to take pictures of memorable
moments. It is used for the main image of a
magazine to get the right shot.
A studio is a place where a model goes for
a picture. It normally has a back screen
what the person stands in front of to get the
right picture. A studio is important for a
magazine to get the main image in a good
setting by using the back screen.
Digital Technology
Computers are normally used to save any
information on and surf the web. From a
magazine point of view, computers are
used to make the magazine from the
images to the text.
A memory card is used to save work on if
you have created something. When using a
memory card for a magazine it is used to
save the magazine so it does not get lost
and thrown away.
Software
Photoshop is a great bit of software on
computers and laptops which you can
change a photo in so many ways.
Photoshop is used in many ways in
magazines but mainly it can change the
images on magazine to make them look so
much better. Promotion software is seen
on moving billboards which promote
certain things. In magazine promotion
software is used as an advantage to get
the magazine out there to be seen
Printing
A printer is used to get a copy of a work
piece if it is either images or text. For
magazines a small printer is not used for
this, it has to be a large printer which has
all of the different buttons to change the
copy.
A printer hardware is used to back up the
printer if anything gets lost so the work
can be found again.
Researching Your Preliminary Exercise
The magazine that I have chosen used many conventions which have been
shown in the production of making the magazine. The main image stands out the
most because it is a large scale image and you can tell from the image what the
information inside may be about. The main image is photographed as a medium
shot close-up which gives the image more of an insight to the readers. There is
no background on the magazine front cover which brings out the main image a
bit more. All of the information is about school so they have not gone off topic
which is good. All of the school magazines have similar conventions which is the
main image is laid out the same. The masthead is also in the same format as all
of the different school magazines because it is bold and makes the reader see it
immediately. The text is all colour matching because the ‘cover story’ is in blue on
its own but the information is black which is called the anchorage text. The blue
text on its own shows that it is the main story or bit of text just by showing the
different colour and because that it is in bold writing. The masthead and the title
for what is in the magazine is a red colour which gives them a link. A few pictures
are added at the right hand side which challenges conventions because there are
never normally that many pictures on the front cover but this magazine shows
that it is unique and to give a slight insight in to what information will be inside of
the magazine. This magazine front cover has been published professionally
because of the way that it has been layed out.
Which forms and conventions will
be used in your design and why?
• I will have a Masthead at the top of my magazine in bold writing and pushed to the front so it is
visible.
• My masthead will be a Leigh Academy colour scheme so it looks professional.
• I will have a large main image so it is stated that it is going to be about a school.
• I will have a faded background so it does not look plain and has a bit of colour added.
• My anchorage text will be well laid out and in order of what the articles will be about.
• Some of the titles will include a teaser about an article which will bring the reader in.
• I may include some puffs and shapes which some of text can go inside.
Main Task Research
This magazine has got a well laid out contents page inside which tells
you about what is going to be inside of the magazine. The magazine
shows that this is a contents page with a clear masthead in bold clear
writing. The contents page does not have many bright colours used for
the text but that does bring out all of the pictures which is a good
convention because it makes the magazine look more professional. The
contents page has a main image which covers most of the right hand
side of the magazine but then has smaller images which will be featured
in the magazine throughout. The main image shows a famous singer
which is why it is the main image and it is a medium shot which shows
from the top of the picture to the waist. This contents page gives a main
cover line which makes the reader want to carry on reading and it also
has a lot of other cover lines which give out information displayed in the
article which gives the reader an insight of what is inside. The colour
scheme on the contents page is professional because it uses the same
colours for the different types of conventions which makes it stand out
more.
The next magazine contents page has a skyline and not a masthead
which is another good convention in a contents page. The main image
covers the left hand side of the contents page and is a medium shot.
This develops the conventions because the singer is not facing the
camera. The main image is also challenging conventions because it is a
different layout and has been altered. The rest of the contents page
follows and uses conventions which are the typical patterns on most
magazines. The colour scheme on the contents page has got the same
colours for the different types of writing which follows the conventions of
other magazines just like the one I looked at before which gives the
same colour schemes. This does help the picture to be seen more in
Contents Page
Main Task Research Double page spread
The double page spread in the magazine challenges, follows and
develops conventions which makes the magazine more interesting
to read. The double page spread has a large image covering the
left hand side of the page. The main image is a long shot which
shows a picture of the whole body. This develops conventions
because not many double page spreads have the main image as
that shot. The background colour follows the colour scheme
throughout the whole of the double page spread. The actual article
is professional because it uses the same font throughout the whole
double spread page. The text looks very professional and has been
put in the bottom right of the double page spread so people see the
image first and then see the text. The celebrity is looking strait at
the audience which entices the audience to buy the magazine.
This double page spread uses different convention which are
challenging, developed and follow other magazines. There is a
large main image on the left side of the page which shows a
medium close up shot so you can see the expression in the face.
This follows convention to other magazines and the way it is laid
out. The colour scheme on the double page spread is black, white
and a gold colour. The black background is shown throughout and
the white text is needed so it stands out on top of the black layout.
It challenges conventions because the text cover line at the top is a
quote which is very different to other magazines. The article looks
professional and develops conventions because the important text
is in a gold colour and the rest is in white.

  • 2. This follows the conventions of a well designed magazine because it uses a good colour scheme which you can see clearly with all of the different colours showing. It has a maximum of 5 colours which is great because it doesn’t go over the top with too many colours so people do not get confused with what they are reading. The magazine is colour coded so it makes it easier to read. It also has a normal title which you can see at the top of the page in the right place so the reader can see it clearly. This magazine is challenging conventions because not many magazines put the main image in front of the masthead. This magazine challenges conventions because there are a few coverlines which are shown on the front page of the magazine but not many so it does not give away all of the articles in the magazine which is very useful. This magazine uses conventions because shown in the bottom left of this magazine is the barcode which gives information about the stock lines. This magazine follows the conventions because it has a skyline at the top of the page which states it is the UK’s biggest music magazine. This is shown as developing conventions because not many magazines do this which helps the magazine stand out and state something. This magazine uses conventions and includes a puff shape which contains information about one of the articles. A puff can either contain information or quotes. This magazine also follows conventions by putting the masthead in front of the image and not behind so it stands out to show what there magazine is called. This magazine uses 3 colours on the front cover of the magazine which makes the magazine effective and so the magazine looks professional. This is shown as developing conventions because of its use of colours. The magazine is well colour coordinated because the coverlines are all one colour, the text is all one colour, and the masthead uses the different colours. This is useful so people do not get confused when reading the front cover. The main image challenges conventions because this shot is taken in a different setting to any other main image which makes the magazine more interesting. Using, Developing and Challenging Conventions
  • 3. Occupation Social Groups Group A- This group consists of Bankers, Lawyers, Doctors, Surgeons, Scientists higher management workers. The people in this group live in their own homes and are very independent from government benefits. They own a mortgage, health insurance, reliable cars, give their children private education. Mis-en-Scene: This is a French phrase and means ‘placing on stage’ The term is used when the overall look and feel of a magazine design is under discussion. Set or studio design, lighting, costume or clothes choices, location or props, and make-up.
  • 4. Example of Magazine cover appealing to a social group This magazine cover is aimed at social group E which is for teenagers or unemployed. The props and costume in this picture is going to be related to teenagers because that is the sort of clothing that they wear. The costume is very laid back and does not stand out as much as Drake. The lighting in this picture is blacked out except for Drake which makes him become more drawn out of the main image. Also the writing on Drakes shirt which is unstoppable may suggest that the magazine cover is the best and helps promote the magazine. The Mis-en-scene of the cover is very appealing and well layed out. The layout of the writing has been well ordered because it is not covering the main image what every teenager wants to see but the writing is still bold to tell the readers what the articles are going to be about. The camera angle for the main image is very strait forward which makes the image stand out more to all teenagers. Drake is used in the main image because he is very well-known and a role model to many teenagers. This magazine uses conventions such as puffs on the right hand side of the magazine which a younger target audience will like a lot. The younger target audience will also like the good use of vibrant colours, which will appeal to them a lot.
  • 5. Magazine Institutions and Distribution What is a media institution? A media institution is a company, business or establishment that is involved in at least one or above of the following including distribution, marketing and production surrounding any media product. Distribution Making the product available for customers to get from the shops that it has been distributed to. Marketing Talking to customers about the value of the product. This will be done through promotion with the value brand and service. Production Creating the product so when it is finished it can be distributed.
  • 6. Technologies and Processes Physical Technology Photographical cameras are used in modern day to take pictures of memorable moments. It is used for the main image of a magazine to get the right shot. A studio is a place where a model goes for a picture. It normally has a back screen what the person stands in front of to get the right picture. A studio is important for a magazine to get the main image in a good setting by using the back screen. Digital Technology Computers are normally used to save any information on and surf the web. From a magazine point of view, computers are used to make the magazine from the images to the text. A memory card is used to save work on if you have created something. When using a memory card for a magazine it is used to save the magazine so it does not get lost and thrown away. Software Photoshop is a great bit of software on computers and laptops which you can change a photo in so many ways. Photoshop is used in many ways in magazines but mainly it can change the images on magazine to make them look so much better. Promotion software is seen on moving billboards which promote certain things. In magazine promotion software is used as an advantage to get the magazine out there to be seen Printing A printer is used to get a copy of a work piece if it is either images or text. For magazines a small printer is not used for this, it has to be a large printer which has all of the different buttons to change the copy. A printer hardware is used to back up the printer if anything gets lost so the work can be found again.
  • 7. Researching Your Preliminary Exercise The magazine that I have chosen used many conventions which have been shown in the production of making the magazine. The main image stands out the most because it is a large scale image and you can tell from the image what the information inside may be about. The main image is photographed as a medium shot close-up which gives the image more of an insight to the readers. There is no background on the magazine front cover which brings out the main image a bit more. All of the information is about school so they have not gone off topic which is good. All of the school magazines have similar conventions which is the main image is laid out the same. The masthead is also in the same format as all of the different school magazines because it is bold and makes the reader see it immediately. The text is all colour matching because the ‘cover story’ is in blue on its own but the information is black which is called the anchorage text. The blue text on its own shows that it is the main story or bit of text just by showing the different colour and because that it is in bold writing. The masthead and the title for what is in the magazine is a red colour which gives them a link. A few pictures are added at the right hand side which challenges conventions because there are never normally that many pictures on the front cover but this magazine shows that it is unique and to give a slight insight in to what information will be inside of the magazine. This magazine front cover has been published professionally because of the way that it has been layed out.
  • 8. Which forms and conventions will be used in your design and why? • I will have a Masthead at the top of my magazine in bold writing and pushed to the front so it is visible.
  • 9. Main Task Research This magazine has got a well laid out contents page inside which tells you about what is going to be inside of the magazine. The magazine shows that this is a contents page with a clear masthead in bold clear writing. The contents page does not have many bright colours used for the text but that does bring out all of the pictures which is a good convention because it makes the magazine look more professional. The contents page has a main image which covers most of the right hand side of the magazine but then has smaller images which will be featured in the magazine throughout. The main image shows a famous singer which is why it is the main image and it is a medium shot which shows from the top of the picture to the waist. This contents page gives a main cover line which makes the reader want to carry on reading and it also has a lot of other cover lines which give out information displayed in the article which gives the reader an insight of what is inside. The colour scheme on the contents page is professional because it uses the same colours for the different types of conventions which makes it stand out more. The next magazine contents page has a skyline and not a masthead which is another good convention in a contents page. The main image covers the left hand side of the contents page and is a medium shot. This develops the conventions because the singer is not facing the camera. The main image is also challenging conventions because it is a different layout and has been altered. The rest of the contents page follows and uses conventions which are the typical patterns on most magazines. The colour scheme on the contents page has got the same colours for the different types of writing which follows the conventions of other magazines just like the one I looked at before which gives the same colour schemes. This does help the picture to be seen more in Contents Page
  • 10. Main Task Research Double page spread The double page spread in the magazine challenges, follows and develops conventions which makes the magazine more interesting to read. The double page spread has a large image covering the left hand side of the page. The main image is a long shot which shows a picture of the whole body. This develops conventions because not many double page spreads have the main image as that shot. The background colour follows the colour scheme throughout the whole of the double page spread. The actual article is professional because it uses the same font throughout the whole double spread page. The text looks very professional and has been put in the bottom right of the double page spread so people see the image first and then see the text. The celebrity is looking strait at the audience which entices the audience to buy the magazine. This double page spread uses different convention which are challenging, developed and follow other magazines. There is a large main image on the left side of the page which shows a medium close up shot so you can see the expression in the face. This follows convention to other magazines and the way it is laid out. The colour scheme on the double page spread is black, white and a gold colour. The black background is shown throughout and the white text is needed so it stands out on top of the black layout. It challenges conventions because the text cover line at the top is a quote which is very different to other magazines. The article looks professional and develops conventions because the important text is in a gold colour and the rest is in white.
