3. Masthead:
Large logo of the
magazines brand. This
would stand out to to the
public due to its bold,
capital letters.
Main Image:
The image of Drake the famous
rapper, this would attract his fans
into reading the article.
Coverline:
Short statements here giving
information about the article.
The public will read this because
the statements are only short and
not long meaning they will not
drag out or get boring for the
reader.
Main Image:
Large picture of the pop singer
Katy Perry, this would catch the
publics attention as she is a well
known celebrity.
Masthead:
The large title of the magazine. However, I
personally do not think this title is effective
as it is covered by the main image, meaning
you are unable to see the full name of the
magazine.
Skyline:
Short piece of information about the
article on the very top of the magazine.
Coverline:
Short statements on the
magazine cover that describe
the insight of the magazine.
This is used to entice the
reader into buying the
magazine.

Bright colors used, for
the image and the
title, but dark colors
used for the text to
make it stand out
against the bright
colors.
4. Defining a social group by their occupation is a way of creating an accurate audience profile.
Group A:
-Bankers
-Lawyers
-Doctors
-Surgeons
-Scientists
-Higher Management
People in this group often make a successful
amount of money and are very wealthy as these
jobs above are very high professions and take a
lot of skills and education.
Group B:
-Teachers
-Middle management
-Fairly well paid professionals
People in this group are often known to live
independently with their own homes. They also have
a profession and a degree, not as high powered as
group A but still very successful.
Group C1:
-Junior management
-Bank Clerks
-Nurses
-‘White Collar’ professionals
People in this group often live on low
mortgage properties. They receive government
benefits, example working tax credits.
Group C2:
-Electricians
-Plumbers
-Carpenters
-Blue collar professions
People in this group are mainly known to live in
rented property and receive government benefits.
Highly trained and qualified.
5. Group D:
Manuals workers such as:
-Drivers
-Post Sorters
-Warehouse Pickers
People who are in this group are known to liv
on a highly tight budget, they also might live
on rented property. This is most likely
provided by a local housing agencies.
They also might shop as discounted shops,
example: Lidl, Aldi, Pound land and
Primark.
Manual workers, retail workers. This does
not require high class qualifications.
Group E:
-Students
-Unemployed
-Pensioners
People who are in this group are typically not very
financially wealthy as they are on low budgets or
are unemployed, They may live at home with
parents/carers or the older generation may be in a
old peoples home or at their home. There are no
set places that people would shop from in this
group.
6. Representing and appealing to social groups
This magazine cover may
represents the social group E,
this is because the group is
aimed for students and the
unemployed suggesting it is for
teenagers.
This magazine cover represents
that as it is specialized for teens
by its magazine title and the main
image being the famous model
Kendall Jenner.
The big bold colours used will
attract the younger audience’s
attention.
Not any long sentences, this makes
it more appealing to read as it will
not drag out or get boring to read.
Main image of Kendall Jenner,
a model and reality TV star who
is very popular on social media –
Attracts the older population.
High key lighting on the magazine
cover, this makes everything on the
cover stand out to the customers
making it more appealing to
purchase, this is because it makes the
magazine look more interesting and
positive to read.
They have made the main image very toned down compare to
the usual model that is made up with bold makeup and out
going dress-wear.
The model is made to look very natural and simple – This could
be represented back to the Teen magazine title , showing that
the younger generation is not all about being overly made up
with makeup and dress-wear.
7. What is a Media Institution?
A media Institution is a company, business or establishment that is in charge of one or more of the
following elements surrounding any media product.
Distributor – Responsible for delivery of the products to the shops.
They also publish the magazine.
8. Technologies and Processes
Physical Technology:
Photographical cameras
Studio
Photography cameras would be used to capture
important images for the magazine, this could be
used as the magazines main image or just small
images to support written information.
Photography studio are mainly used to take
professional pictures of a model – This is nearly
always were the main image of a magazine is taken.
Digital Technology:
Computer hardware
Memory Card
A computer hardware is used as any good quality
computer/laptop technology. To be good quality and standard
for making a magazine, you're hardware must have a decent
amount of storage, this is so it holds all you're data without
the risk of you not having enough and also be HD screen, this
is so you have a clearer view of how you're work will be
produced.
9. Printing:
Printing processes
Printer hardware
A printer is used for printing any work you have
produced on you're technology device. This is very
frequently used with magazines as they are produced and
written mainly on technology devices and printed out
then put together to be completed.
Software:
Photoshop
Promotion software
Software is made to be available for use at another site
known as an application service provider. Some general
kinds of application software include, Productivity
software, which includes word processors, spreadsheets,
and tools for use by most computer users.
10. Which forms and conventions will be used in your design and why?
• Masthead – Title introducing what the magazine topic is.
• Coverline – short statements on the cover, giving the readers some information about the magazine.
• Colour scheme – Modernize the colors, not the typical Blue.
• Main Image – This may be an image of the school building or the school students.
• Puffs – This will be used on the magazine cover to highlight the key information that they readers may be
interested to know about the school.
• Skyline – Short piece of information on the very top of the magazine cover.
11. Researching your preliminary exercise
Main image of a school girl dressed
appropriately in school uniform. They
have also captured the student smiling,
this gives a positive vibe of school life.
Masthead shows the very basic title of the
magazine, they have used a different color
and font from the rest of the text to make it
stand out more to the audience.
Short cover line statements on the front
cover. They have used short sentences of
information instead of full long sentences so
they do not drain out the reader with too
much information to read on the cover, the
short statements keep it simple, short and
more approachable for younger students to
read.
Masthead says what the page in
the magazine is about, leaving
no confusion for the reader to
find the contents page.
Contents page is laid out very simple
and easy for the reader to understand.
They may have laid it out this way as
this magazine will be read by younger
students who may not understand
complicated format.
Also images placed to direct readers to
what the contents page involves.
They have made the
background to this magazine
cover a plain color compared
to the magazine above where
the only used bright colors.
This may be to bring all the
attention on the images and
the text. This is quite
effective as as a reader all my
attention is on the text and
image, not the background.
12. Music magazines contents page:
Masthead for the contents page is
designed in a unique urban pattern,
this is reflected back to the magazines
brand VIBE, a hip magazine targeted
to attract the younger generation.
The main image is of the famous
rapper/singer/model Ciara. This would
immediately attract her fans into reading
the magazine as it is clear their would be
articles about her music and career.
The Contents title has been split up into
three parts to give it a more stand out
effect to the customers. The text is white
to stand out from the dark black/grey
background.
The model has been dressed in quite a
revealing manor, showing her exposed
thighs and legs. This represents
glamour and sexualizes the model.
This reflects back to the magazines
target audience being the older
generation.
The photographer has placed the
model to be lying down with her legs
arched upwards. This works for the
cover as the customers first attention
would be on the model but then
directs them by her legs to the main
purpose of the cover.
The text here is very basic and
simple with not a huge amount of
text for the customers to read. This
may work as the customers are not
attacked with a large amount of text
to read that could become quite
draining.
The colour scheme used here
is black/grey. This fits into the
magazines vibe and contrasts
with the text.
13. The logo and name of the magazine is
‘Q’, this is placed in the left hand
corner of the cover. This is different
to most magazine logo’s/title’s
because their typically known to
dominate the page and stand out,
whereas this is made very small and
out the way.
The main image here is of the famous
singer, James Blunt. This image
dominates the whole page giving a
clear impression to the customers that
he is the main focus and topic of the
magazine.
Despite the singer being the main
image of the cover, he is placed 2nd
on the features section. This is
found odd as you would assume he
would be the main focus of the
magazine but another artist has
been placed before him.
The colour scheme of this cover has
been made slightly yellow, this may
be to create a retro theme – this is
reflected to the type of magazine it is
branded as.
14. Double-Spread Music Magazine Cover:
The main image is typically known in
magazines to take up a whole page,
However this image only takes up a
quarter of the page but still catches
the audiences attention as it is
dominating there page as it is large
and the text is small.
On this double page spread
cover, they have used three
individual columns to split up
the text. This makes it easier for
the reader to read as its not a
large amount of text at once.
Large headlining text
of the artist in the
main image. This
immediately attracts
her fans as this
suggests the whole
article is based on her
music and career.
The Headline is typically
designed to be on the
very top of the magazine
cover. This headline is
made smaller then the
text of the celebrity in
the main image – This
brings the attention off
the main headline which
is not common in most
magazines.
The colour scheme fits
nicely with the theme
of the magazine. Very
bright, feminine and
modern – Very much
like the celebrity in the
main image.
Quotes are included
here by Nicki Minaj
during an interview.
This is highlighted to
stand out against the
rest of the text.
15. The main image of
Cheryl Cole takes up
the whole of the left
side of the double
page spread - The
image reinforces the
‘rock’ theme of the
magazine,
The capital C is used to
represent the celebrity's
first letter of their name –
Representing that the
whole text will be about
them.
The text is left at a very simple font and colour.
However the magazine is appeared as very formal
and not humorous or chatty . It sets the tone of
the article as being serious and implies that more
important matters would be discussed rather
than just gossip.
A small quote from the celebrity.
