In what ways does your magazine design use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real magazines?
 My music magazine has to appeal to the teenage boys and girls because it is a pop magazine. My music magazine uses,
develops and challenges the conventions of pop magazines that are being produced today because of the standards of
pop magazines. I have been looking at many real magazines throughout making my magazine, so I can use some of the
conventions that they use, so that my magazine looks professional. My magazine design uses a few puffs as the
magazine goes on, which makes it much like other magazines when they use shapes. Using puffs can make the
magazine look more effective to the reader because it will catch there eye. My magazine design uses the same colour
scheme, which makes the magazine look professional and other music magazines use this convention because they do
not want there magazine to look out of place. The masthead I chose was called ‘BASS’ because it is associated with
music and works well with the pop genre. My pop magazine is simple just like other pop music magazines. My music
magazine develops conventions because on every other magazine the main image is most of the time looking at the
camera but in my main image they are not looking at the camera. My main image sits behind the masthead because the
questionnaire helped me to decide whether the viewers wanted the main image in front or behind the text. My magazine
follows conventions because it only uses a certain amount of colours to do the music magazine. Overall my music
magazine uses, develops and challenges conventions to make the magazine the best possible music magazine. My
magazine uses Mis-en-Scene to use props in creating the music magazine. My double- page spread also follows
conventions because a lot of magazines have an image covering one half of the double-page spread and it was the most
popular answer on the questionnaire to have one main image on one half.
How does your magazine represent particular social
groups?
 My magazine is a pop music magazine, so it will attract social group E. My music magazine will contain a lot of
students reading it because it goes towards the ages of 12-20 year olds. My music magazine will suit them best
as it will stand out to them, which will make them buy it. My music magazine will tend to be read by the female
side and rarely the male because male spenders will not want to be seen buying the magazine. The social
group that I have chosen are normally on social media such as twitter and facebook, which means that they will
have a lot more spare time to read a music magazine of there choice. The puffs on my magazine design will
attract the age range because they will want to see information coming out at them. The colour scheme of the
magazines would also attract the age range because they will want to see bright colours in the text, which
helped the magazine to stand out. The occupational social group E will have a lot of time on there hands to
watch TV so they will have some time on there hands to also read a magazine, so my magazine will hopefully
attract to them. The occupational social group that I have chosen will like the big main image on the front cover,
contents page and double-page spread because they will like to see more of a visual effect , so they do not get
bored reading it. They may need to get someone else to buy the music magazine for them but they will always
have time to read the magazine in their spare time.
What kind of media magazine institution might distribute
your magazine and why?
 The magazine institution that I would like best to distribute my magazine would be the International Publishing
Company because it is one of the United Kingdoms leading consumer magazine, which will help it to attract a
lot of people in the UK. It has a very large portfolio and sells over 350 million copies each year. This will be
great for me because my magazine is likely to be bought a lot every year in the UK and will hopefully sell a lot
of copies. The International Publishing Company has titles under five magazine divisions which are, Connect,
Inspire, Ignite, SouthBank and TX. The type of magazines that the International Publishing Company own is
NME and Guitar and Bass. NME and Guitar and Bass are very well-known magazines, which will help my
magazine to be as known as them. NME produces a lot of different genres of music, so my genre can fit in well
with the other genres if needed. Overall the International Publishing Company is best suitable to me than the
others like the Bauer Media Group or Emap and it will help my magazine to sell more copies.
Who would be the audience for your magazine?
 The target audience that best suits my music magazines would be teenagers. Teenagers always will like the
bright colours in magazines, so I chose to put in bright colours for the puffs and some of the text. The
questionnaire helped me a lot to figure out what female teenagers would like in a pop music magazine and I
chose some of the most popular answers, so my magazine can appeal to them a lot more. The target audience
that I chose will like the a big main image that they can visually see, so they are not just reading. The
background is very simple, which the target audience will like because there is not much going on around the
main image, which makes the main image to stand out more. The font that I used can be easily read by the
target audience, so it isn’t very complicated to know what is going on in the magazine. I have also included a
giveaway in the front cover of the magazine to win tickets to a live show, so a lot of teenagers will want to try
and win the competition, so it will make them buy the magazine. This advertisement, will help to sell a lot of
magazines. My target audience will like all of the features used in my magazine and will hopefully want to buy it.
How did you attract/address your audience?
 When attracting or addressing my audience, my masthead ‘BASS’ has a great effect to it because it simply
states what the magazine is called with a big and bold font to it. I researched other pop magazines such as Q
and Vibe, which helped me to create my music magazine a lot like there magazines. There magazines are very
simplistic but include a range of conventions, which draw the audience in. I used a good colour scheme which
matched the anchorage text with other text, so it looked much more professional. Facial expressions can help
to attract and address the audience because it enhances the effect of encouraging the reader to read on. My
magazine states that it is the UK’s best selling pop music magazine, which will tell the reader to buy the
magazines because it states how good the magazine is. My audience is female teenagers, so having a male on
the magazine entices the reader to buy it. The ways that I approach my target audience will be different to other
genres of music but most music magazines use the same conventions to attract there audience. My magazine
also has a style of Mis-en-Scene because it uses a prop on the front cover to give the image more flair.
What have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing your magazine?
 On my journey to creating my magazine I have used a lot of technologies and processes that have enhanced
me to complete the magazines. I have used physical technology throughout my work, so I can take photos
using a camera to get the perfect shot. A setting was also used for the picture to be taken using a
photographical camera.
 Digital technology was also used to create my magazine. Computers were vital in this because they were used
to save all of the work on a memory card. Digital technology allowed me to use PhotoShop to create my work
and Blogger to publish my work. PhotoShop was a great use of software where you can change photos in many
ways to suit what you want and to make them look better. Blogger was used from a computer to publish my
work throughout my music magazine and school magazine.
 Overall the technologies that I used were all helpful to create the final piece of all of my work and made my
work look the best it could possible be. The technologies and processes that I used all enhanced my work in
some way. I used 3 types of the 4 technologies and processes available.
Looking at your preliminary task- what do you feel you
have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
 I learnt a lot from doing the preliminary task because it shows me the ways of what my designs had to be like
for my music magazine. I have taken a lot of experience from doing the preliminary task because it gave me
ways that I could improve on in the main task. When I done the front cover for my preliminary task I made the
mistake of putting a really bright colour as the background but it needs to look a lot more professional, so I had
a simplistic background on my music magazine. Also I made an improvement on my school magazine because
the main image was too small and needed to be larger, so in my music magazine front cover the main image
was a lot larger, which may entice the reader to read on. My main task helped me to correct the mistakes from
the preliminary task because my school magazine front cover was too bland and didn’t have much going on
around the main image, so I took some inspiration from the preliminary task and used it to my ability to have a
different approach to my music magazine.
 Overall my preliminary task could have been structures a lot better but that gave me some help to make my
music magazine look professional. Improvements were made to suit the target audience and to attract more
attention to the music magazine.
