Recently, I came across this quote from a poet and author named Wendell Berry:
‘Nobody can discover the world for somebody else. Only when we discover it for ourselves
does it become common ground and a common bond and we cease to be alone.’
This quote somewhat epitomises International Week at AP1 and reinforces the very
strong message of Global Citizens Learning Together that resonates across our Group of
Schools. Being an international student at BIS means creating an awareness, respect and
empathy for all countries and cultures across our very diverse globe whilst at the same
time, educating our children to take learning into their own hands thus making it both
relevant and differentiated.
I have very much enjoyed visiting all of the classrooms and learning areas this week and have been very im-
pressed with the creativity of our children and teachers. As always, the Global Café was a true delight - both to
the eyes and to the taste buds. My thanks go out to all parents that made this event possible. Your cooperation,
support and commitment to our learning environment is clearly evident and it was great to hear that the café
itself served not only great food but also served to bring a close community, even closer together. I also hope
that you enjoyed today’s Parade of Nations - it was a great way to round off a very memorable week. Photo-
graphs from the week can be found in this week’s newsletter.
Next week, AP1 gets back to business as usual and I would like to remind you all that our school photographer,
Mr Johnny Woo will be in school from Monday until Friday. Please ensure that all children come to school in
correct uniform, including the correct colour socks and footwear. All details can be found in the letter that was
emailed to you on Monday 12th January - please click here for further access.
I would like to remind you about the next events at AP1 so that you can begin to put them in your diary:
Wednesday 11th February (8.15am) - Headteacher’s Coffee morning, ‘Community Service’ focus.
Friday 13th February - TET assemblies.
Look out for more details of these two events coming to you via email over the next couple of weeks.
I hope that you enjoy reading through the articles on offer to you in this week’s newsletter.
Have a great weekend.
3. International Week at AP1
Incredible, amazing, fantastic, superb, phenomenal, I could write a whole list of adjectives to describe Interna-
tional Week 2015 at AP1 but it might go longer than a page. As a new member of staff, I had heard about In-
ternational Week. In fact I think I am right in saying that it was one of the first things Mr Simon mentioned,
in hushed and revered tones, to me when I first stepped off the plane in August. Little did I know why… but I
do now.
The learning that has taken place this week has
been phenomenal. I think this is the most important
thing to remember. The ‘wow factor’ that Interna-
tional week brings to AP1 cannot be denied but it
runs so much deeper than that and real learning, the
creative thinking, the collaborative opportunities,
thinking outside the box, being stretched beyond
one’s comfort zone has all been in evidence. Seeing
all the skills learned in English, IPC, Maths and Sci-
ence lessons put to work this week in a myriad of
different ways has been the real highlight for me.
Beyond the amazing displays, the creative games
and the class visits, our students have been pushed
to their limits, encouraged to reach that little bit fur-
ther and most of all they have had fun doing it!
The Global Café was probably another highlight for me
(and everyone else!). To see the Gym come to life with all
corners of the globe represented was a wonderful experi-
ence. The time, effort and genuine care that went into all
the stalls was incredible. Ably managed by our wonder-
ful PTG, the two day event was highly anticipated by all
and did not disappoint. Delicious aromas wafted out
through the doors and the Gym was jam packed. It was
so lovely to share this event with all members of our
school community as well as our community partners
that visited on Tuesday afternoon. The impromptu dance
off between the parents of the various countries was a
joy and so too was the conga line and ‘Happy Birthday to
Singapore’ by all involved demonstrated just how much
everyone enjoyed the event as much as the children. I
think you would be hard pushed to find this real commu-
nity warmth anywhere else.
The Parade of Nations on Friday was again another
wow moment. Watching the children march proudly
under their flags was very moving. There was more
than one parent wiping away a tear. The costumes
were beautiful and the whole Gym had a real energy
and buzz to it. The children that participated in the
dancing and drumming can feel extremely proud of
themselves for their amazing performances. They
looked stunning in their traditional dress. A huge
thanks to everyone involved in making this happen.
To all involved in making International week 2015 so
special, ‘thank you’. Thanks to our teachers and teaching
assistants, office staff, guards and cleaners, parents and
most of all the children. Our BIS community spirit was
definitely alive and well this week.

8. Year 1 - Fantastic Teamwork
Issue 18/Page 8
Our Year 1 children have returned to school
refreshed from their Christmas holidays and
enthusiastic about the new term. The class-
rooms have been buzzing with new displays,
role plays and focused learning on their In-
ternational Week countries. Last week’s
build up has not only deepened their
knowledge of their specific country but also
provided excellent opportunities for collabo-
rative learning. Children have worked to-
gether, in groups and as a whole class to
literally turn their rooms into their chosen
country. They have shared ideas, asked in-
teresting questions and listened to their
peers in order to solve problems linked to
country-specific tasks. This experience has
also encouraged independent thought and
some inspired additions to the learning en-
vironment. The exciting lead up to Interna-
tional Week has undoubtedly broadened
their understanding of the world we live in
and reinforced the idea that we are all glob-
al citizens. With this knowledge, they were
fully prepared to travel the world and ex-
plore the new countries hidden behind the
doors of the BIS class rooms!
