I am sure that you will have been following the events in Nepal in recent weeks.  Appearances to the
contrary, our students leapt into ac on immediately on hearing the news and, during the Spring Holiday,
our  Head  Students  were  already  planning  how  they  could  help.    Now  they  are  ready  to  do  so,  with
specially designed badges and collec on boxes lined up to launch to the school community early next
week.  Sean Neo and Hok Yin Kong have wri en an ar cle explaining how we are going to support the
students and teachers of the Bri sh School Kathmandu, a FOBISIA school, in their efforts to rebuild school
projects that they have a long‐term rela onship with.  In this way, all support from BIS here in HCMC will
reach those in need immediately and will be used for longer term projects to help people in Nepal rebuild
their lives.

Parents  can  support  this  student‐led  drive  by  allowing  their  children  to  donate  in  school,  by  sending
dona ons to BIS recep on or direct to the school in Kathmandu. Sean’s and Hokyin’s ar cle provides full
details.

On  15th
April  2015,  a  devasta ng  earthquake  rocked  the  founda ons  of  Nepali  society  to  the  core.  A
magnitude 8 earthquake, it was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal in 81 years. An es mated 8,000
people lost their lives to the quake, over 19,000 have been injured and thousands of homes across of the
country  have  been  damaged  or  destroyed.  Furthermore,  the  impact  of  this  earthquake  extends  far
beyond the immediate a ermath. The lives of thousands of Nepali ci zens have been dras cally altered
in the span of a few weeks through the changes this will bring to their families, their society and their
livelihoods.
Our partners at the Bri sh School Kathmandu have gone above and beyond the call of duty to provide aid
to those afflicted by the earthquake. The generous staff and students have offered the school car park as
a place of temporary shelter for those affected and the school has hosted the arrival of aid materials from
Medecins  Sans  Fron ères.  They  have  also  arranged  visits  to  their  local  school  partners  which  were
decimated by the violent tremors. So far, the school community has provided food and tarpaulins for 83
families.
The  scale  of  destruc on,  however,  is  beyond  comprehension  and  rebuilding  will  be  a  monumental
challenge.  Many  local  schools  such  as  the  Dhading  School,  the  Disabled  New  Life  Centre  and  the
Bungama  DSA School, which cared for and taught hearing and sight impaired children, were completely
devastated during this tragic event. These schools had a massive sphere of influence, providing educa on
for large communi es of impoverished people who needed them desperately. Rebuilding these schools
would  provide  educa on  for  children  in  the  local  Nepali  community  and  would  be  a  significant  step
towards repairing a sha ered society.
We, as part of this global community, seek to con nue our support of people in need and help those less
fortunate than ourselves. As such, during the next few weeks, BIS students will be working with the Bri sh
School Kathmandu to raise funds to rebuild the local schools with the hope that we can ease the suffering
of those who have been affected by the ditaster. Every li le bit counts towards assis ng those in need
and we hope you will give generously. Prefects will be collec ng in school and awarding badges to the
most generous.

On Saturday 9th
May, BIS sent nine Year 8 mathema cians to Renaissance Interna onal School for the
annual Junior Saigon Maths Compe on. This being the first compe on for most of the compe tors, it
was great to see so much enthusiasm for a morning of tough problem solving!
The opening Individual Round proved to be challenging but Jungyoon Nam and Hayden Park both did well
to gain joint 7th
place between them. The teams ini ally struggled to get their team order right for the
Pass it Back Round but found their rhythm towards the end with BIS 3 (Joo Wan Ryu, Hayden Park and Jae
Won Jeon) earning a creditable 30 points.
Next came the Puzzle Round with the teams having to solve a puzzle using 60 different mathema cal
clues. BIS 1 (Benne  Jones, Mai Anh Pham and Nina Pham) managed to work best under pressure to claim
9th
 place.
The final Relay Round challenged the students’ mental and physical abili es. Fortunately, we had some
natural athletes amongst the teams with BIS 2 (Dana Kim, Jungyoon Nam and Sanny Wu) running the
fastest around the course.
Overall, a good morning’s work from the BIS teams. We certainly have some stars for the future!

Recently, a group of BIS students from TX, AP1 and AP2 met up with Ms. Hong Nhung, the famous Viet‐
namese singer, to discuss the issue of the illegal trading of rhino horn in Vietnam. She is playing an im‐
portant role as a ‘rhino ambassador’ in the Vietnamese na onal public awareness campaign aimed at
stopping this trade in order to protect this cri cally endangered species from becoming ex nct.

Ms. Hong Nhung was so impressed as BIS students explained their ini a ves, including collec ng hun‐
dreds of signatures pledging not to be involved in this ac vity, placing collec on boxes around District 2
and producing posters and s ckers reminding people about the plight of the rhinos. The students in turn
were fascinated to hear first‐hand about her trip to South Africa where she witnessed the heartbreaking
scene of a dead rhino whose blood was s ll dripping from the hole where poachers had hacked off its
horn. The Q&A session that followed sparked some interes ng discussion, with BIS students asking intelli‐
gent ques ons as well as voicing their opinions in an extremely mature and caring way.

Also present was a BIS parent, Dr. Mary Chambers, who is the Director of Training and Public Engagement
with Science at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit.  She has also been involved in a number of
ini a ves to raise awareness, and kindly donated t‐shirts to all par cipants with the ‘Rhino Rangers’ logo.

While this is a complicated and urgent issue, BIS students believe in the old adage ‘do not despise small
beginnings’  knowing  that  their  contribu on  will  have  a  posi ve  influence  in  ensuring  that  the  world’s
wildlife is protected for genera ons to come.

  • 3. BISbuzz Issue 32 | 3 Support for Nepal – BIS Students need your help   On  15th   April  2015,  a  devasta ng  earthquake  rocked  the  founda ons  of  Nepali  society  to  the  core.  A     magnitude 8 earthquake, it was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal in 81 years. An es mated 8,000  people lost their lives to the quake, over 19,000 have been injured and thousands of homes across of the  country  have  been  damaged  or  destroyed.  Furthermore,  the  impact  of  this  earthquake  extends  far         beyond the immediate a ermath. The lives of thousands of Nepali ci zens have been dras cally altered  in the span of a few weeks through the changes this will bring to their families, their society and their   livelihoods.  Our partners at the Bri sh School Kathmandu have gone above and beyond the call of duty to provide aid  to those afflicted by the earthquake. The generous staff and students have offered the school car park as  a place of temporary shelter for those affected and the school has hosted the arrival of aid materials from  Medecins  Sans  Fron ères.  They  have  also  arranged  visits  to  their  local  school  partners  which  were        decimated by the violent tremors. So far, the school community has provided food and tarpaulins for 83  families.  The  scale  of  destruc on,  however,  is  beyond  comprehension  and  rebuilding  will  be  a  monumental       challenge.  Many  local  schools  such  as  the  Dhading  School,  the  Disabled  New  Life  Centre  and  the  Bungama  DSA School, which cared for and taught hearing and sight impaired children, were completely  devastated during this tragic event. These schools had a massive sphere of influence, providing educa on  for large communi es of impoverished people who needed them desperately. Rebuilding these schools  would  provide  educa on  for  children  in  the  local  Nepali  community  and  would  be  a  significant  step        towards repairing a sha ered society.  We, as part of this global community, seek to con nue our support of people in need and help those less  fortunate than ourselves. As such, during the next few weeks, BIS students will be working with the Bri sh  School Kathmandu to raise funds to rebuild the local schools with the hope that we can ease the suffering  of those who have been affected by the ditaster. Every li le bit counts towards assis ng those in need  and we hope you will give generously. Prefects will be collec ng in school and awarding badges to the  most generous.  For more informa on, please visit these links:  http://www.tbskathmandu.org/files/11thMay-TBSVisitsDhadingSchools.pdf http://www.tbskathmandu.org/news-and-events/school-news/   To donate, send small amounts of cash in with your children, contact BIS Recep on or transfer directly to  one of these bank accounts:    For Interna onal Transfers  A/c Name: The Bri sh School Kathmandu  IBAN number – GB43SCBL60919910938710  ABA Swi  number code: SCBLJESH  Bank: Standard Chartered Bank (Jersey) Limited,  15 Castle Street, St. Helier, Jersey,  JE4 8PT, Channels Islands    For transfer from a UK Bank Account:  A/c Name: The Bri sh School Kathmandu  A/C Number: 10938710  Sort code: 60‐91‐99  Bank: Standard Chartered Bank    By Hokyin Kong and Sean Neo, Year 12

  • 5. BISbuzz Issue 32 | 5 On Saturday 9th  May, BIS sent nine Year 8 mathema cians to Renaissance Interna onal School for the   annual Junior Saigon Maths Compe on. This being the first compe on for most of the compe tors, it  was great to see so much enthusiasm for a morning of tough problem solving!  The opening Individual Round proved to be challenging but Jungyoon Nam and Hayden Park both did well  to gain joint 7th  place between them. The teams ini ally struggled to get their team order right for the  Pass it Back Round but found their rhythm towards the end with BIS 3 (Joo Wan Ryu, Hayden Park and Jae  Won Jeon) earning a creditable 30 points.  Next came the Puzzle Round with the teams having to solve a puzzle using 60 different mathema cal  clues. BIS 1 (Benne  Jones, Mai Anh Pham and Nina Pham) managed to work best under pressure to claim  9th  place.  The final Relay Round challenged the students’ mental and physical abili es. Fortunately, we had some  natural athletes amongst the teams with BIS 2 (Dana Kim, Jungyoon Nam and Sanny Wu) running the   fastest around the course.  Overall, a good morning’s work from the BIS teams. We certainly have some stars for the future!    Ben Sillitoe  Assistant Head of Mathema cs   Junior Saigon Maths Competition
  • 6. BISbuzz Issue 32 | 6 Recently, a group of BIS students from TX, AP1 and AP2 met up with Ms. Hong Nhung, the famous Viet‐ namese singer, to discuss the issue of the illegal trading of rhino horn in Vietnam. She is playing an im‐ portant role as a ‘rhino ambassador’ in the Vietnamese na onal public awareness campaign aimed at  stopping this trade in order to protect this cri cally endangered species from becoming ex nct.     Ms. Hong Nhung was so impressed as BIS students explained their ini a ves, including collec ng hun‐ dreds of signatures pledging not to be involved in this ac vity, placing collec on boxes around District 2  and producing posters and s ckers reminding people about the plight of the rhinos. The students in turn  were fascinated to hear first‐hand about her trip to South Africa where she witnessed the heartbreaking  scene of a dead rhino whose blood was s ll dripping from the hole where poachers had hacked off its  horn. The Q&A session that followed sparked some interes ng discussion, with BIS students asking intelli‐ gent ques ons as well as voicing their opinions in an extremely mature and caring way.     Also present was a BIS parent, Dr. Mary Chambers, who is the Director of Training and Public Engagement  with Science at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit.  She has also been involved in a number of  ini a ves to raise awareness, and kindly donated t‐shirts to all par cipants with the ‘Rhino Rangers’ logo.     While this is a complicated and urgent issue, BIS students believe in the old adage ‘do not despise small  beginnings’  knowing  that  their  contribu on  will  have  a  posi ve  influence  in  ensuring  that  the  world’s  wildlife is protected for genera ons to come.    Simone Tansini (10V) and Mr. Robert Brownrigg (Head of Academic English and EAL)  BIS ‘Rhino Rangers’
