3. Meaning of case study
• Case study can be used in education as a
teaching tool. Many students learn better
using real life examples , and case studies
can be an effective way to learn in
classroom.

4. Definition of case study
• According to P.V. Young (1974) ‘ case
study is a method by which life of social
unit can be investigated and analysed’

5. Characterstics
• The number of unit to be studied is small.
• It studies a social unit deeply and thorougly.
• it is qualitative as well as quantitative.
• It covers sufficient wide cycle of times.
• It has continuity in nature.

6. STEPS INVOLVED IN CASE STUDY
• Determines the research question and
carefully defines it .
• Choose the cases and state how the data is to
be gathered and which techiques for analysis.
• Prepare to collect the data.
• Collect data in the field.
• Analyse the data and prepare the report.

7. TYPES OF CASE STUDY
• Illustrative case study
these are primariy descripitive
studies
Exploratory case study
these are condensed case studies
performed before implenting a large scale
investigation

8. Cumulative Case Study
These serve to aggregate
information from several times.

9. • Critical instance case studies
These examine one or more sites for either
the purpose of examining a situation of unique
interest with little to no interest in
generazability ,or universal assertion.

10. When should we use a case study
• When the researcher is trying to answer ‘how’
or ‘why’ questions
• When the researcher cannot manipulate the
behaviours of those being studied
• When the researcher wants to look closer at
contextual conditons relevant to the issue being
studied .
• When boundaries between the issue being
studied and the context are not clear.
