2. LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION AND
PRODUCTION
The headings we would be covering in this lecture are:
1- Language Comprehension
2- The Processes of Language Comprehension
3- The Stages of Language Comprehension and
Production
4- The Brain Parts Involeved
3. LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION
The way people understand and interpret the
written , spoken, gestured or signed versions
of language is what we call the language
comprehension.
It is a complex process that is easily and
effortlessly done by humans.
5. THE PROCESSES OF LANGUAGE
COMPREHENSION
Language comprehension takes place at all the
organizational levels of language, starting
from the phonemic units to the use of
sentence structures.
It mainly involves the two types of processes:
1- The Basic Processes
2- The Higher Processes
6. THE BASIC PROCESSES
The basic processes of language
comprehension involve the vocabulary
comprehension and the sentence
comprehension.
They entails about how the words give meaning
and in what combinations.
They can be used in sentences to give straight
sense.
7. THE HIGHER LEVEL PROCESSES
The higher processes use basic processes to
comprehend structures pragmatically and
inferentially.These processes go beyond the
meaning wordly meaning and try to figure
out what exactly the reader or speaker has to
convey.
8. THE LANGUAGE PRODUCTION
Language production describes and explains
how people produce the spoken or written
language. It also discusses how people
produce single words and then turn to the
production of sentences. It entails all the
stages between having a concept and
communicating it.
9. THE STAGES OF LANGUAGE PRODUCTION
AND COMPREHENSION

10. THE BRAIN PARTS INVOLVED IN
LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION AND
PRODUCTION
Wernicke’s area in the brain part involved in
language comprehension.
Broca’s area in the brain part involved of
language production.
12. WERNICK’S AREA
Wernick’s area is a crucial language part in
temporal lobe and it is connected to Broca’s
area through a neural pathway, Primarily
Wernick’s area is involved in the language
comprehension.
Historically, this brain part has been linked with
language processing, whether written or
spoken.
13. BROCA’S AREA
Broca’s area is located in the frontal lobe, and it
is associated with speech production and
articulation. The ability to articulate ideas and
the use of words articulately in spoken and
written language, has been attributed in
Broca’s area.
