A Constituent Assembly member today alleged that the government had stopped the process of
granting affiliation to new medical colleges without any reasonable ground.
At a meeting of Women, Children, Senior Citizens and Social Welfare Committee of the
Legislature-Parliament, CPN-UML lawmaker Banshidhar Mishra today expressed resentment at
the government for denying affiliation to medical colleges. He is also vice president and one an
investor of the proposed Manmohan Memorial Institute of Medical Sciences.
He said, “The Prime Minister decided to halt the process of granting affiliation to new medical
colleges on ad hoc basis just because a person stages hunger strike.” He further called Dr
Govinda KC, who had earlier staged hunger strike to press the government not to grant affiliation
to new medical colleges inside Kathmandu Valley, a ‘lunatic’ and PM’s decision unjustifiable.
Mishra said, “The Institute of Medicine (IoM), Tribhuvan University, should immediately
approve the proposals of new medical colleges.” Along with Manmohan Memorial Institute of
Medical Sciences, National Medical College, Peoples Medical College, Nepal Police Medical
College are also waiting for approval to run medical courses.
Mishra said, “The process of approval has been halted because of protests of Dr KC of
Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.” Dr KC is of the view that there is no need of
additional medical colleges in the Valley.
Earlier, on November 11, the Faculty Board of IoM, had decided not to grant affiliation to any
medical college until further notice. The decision was taken following PM Koirala’s directives.
PM Koirala had written to the IoM Faculty Board, directing it not to grant affiliation to any
medical college for the time being.
