2. Introduction to Pareto Diagram
• A Pareto chart, also called a Pareto distribution diagram,
is a vertical bar graph in which values are plotted in
decreasing order of relative frequency from left to right
• Pareto charts are extremely useful for analyzing what
problems need attention first because the taller bars on
the chart, which represent frequency, clearly illustrate
which variables have the greatest cumulative effect on a
given system.
• The Pareto chart provides a graphic depiction of the
Pareto principle, a theory maintaining that 80% of the
output in a given situation or system is produced by 20%
of the input.
• The Pareto chart is one of the seven basic tools of quality
control.
3. • Vilfredo Federico Damaso
Pareto (was an
Italian engineer, sociologist, e
conomist, political scientist,
and philosopher
• He introduced the concept of
Pareto efficiency and helped
develop the field of
microeconomics.
• The Pareto principle was
named after him and built on
observations of his such as
that 80% of the land in Italy
was owned by 20% of the
population.
6. Symptoms of Garbage in the
City
• Over use of dumping place – In the city like Mumbai
which produces over 11,000 metric tons of trash every
day, where the dumping place are over used
• No Place for dumping waste – Mumbai dumps most of its
garbage in the place called Deonar but Asia’s largest and
oldest dumpsite is bursting and Mumbai don’t have any
other place like Deonar
• No Proper Techniques – There is no proper techniques
used for waste management were as the city still dumps
its majority of the waste in one dustbin (Dry waste and
Wet waste are dumped in the same Dustbins
• Lack of Monitoring – Though there are laws against
spitting and throwing of garbage in public places but
most of the people still do that because there is no one
to supervise
7. Contd
• Lack of Training on Waste Management – Though most
of the cleaning staff are illiterate there should regular
training given to such employees on waste management
• Lack of awareness – There is lack of awareness among
the people schools and colleges should take the intiative
to make people aware of the consequences.
8. Survey of Causes – 200 Sample
Size
Over use of dumping places
35%
No Place for dumping

26%
no proper techniques
14%
Lack of monitoring
6%
Lack of training
10%
Lack of awareness
5%
Low quality of dustbins
4%
causes of garbage
10. Recommendation
1. Instead of over dumping find the new dumping place
which is far from the city
2. Regular Training to the Employee
3. A committee who can monitor the laws set by the
government
4. Good Quality of plastics used for making dustbins
5. Concept of Dry and Wet Garbage should be followed
strictly
11. Lesson Learnt by the Team
1. How Pareto Analysis can be use in the problem solving
2. Easy way to detect any problem
3. Pareto Diagram can be used in the daily routine of an
organization
4. Most simple tool to solve complex problems
