Manoj and Preetha discuss Winner-Lever's new strategy to launch snack parlors across the country serving healthier snacks. To produce items like samosas, cookies, and donuts for these parlors will require changing from their current assembly line system to a batch production system, where a machine or group of machines will produce a batch of one item before moving to the next. Some challenges of batch processing that will need to be addressed include more expensive material handling, more complex production planning and control systems, and a generally longer production cycle time.

Narrator’s Voice Over: Preetha is a junior executive at
Winner-Lever Ltd. Her mentor, Chief Engineer, Manoj, has
just returned from a strategy meeting at the head office in
Mumbai. Manoj and Preetha meet to discuss the latest
company strategy. Let us join in.
Manoj: Hi Preetha!
Preetha: Hi Manoj! Good to see you after a long gap.
Manoj: Yes, it’s nice to be back. There’s so much to be
done.
Preetha: So, what is the diversification plan you were
mentioning on the phone?
Manoj: Well, we plan to launch Winner-Lever parlours
throughout the country. We may even franchise them. The
idea is to have healthy and tasty snacks served fresh at
these parlours: fat-free samosas, baked donuts, low-sugar
cookies… that kind of stuff.

Challenges of Batch Processing
Expensive material handling
Complex production planning
and control systems
Preetha: Wow! That’s a major strategic change.
Manoj: Yes, we’ll have to rethink all our policies.
Preetha: Will we need to change our production system?
Manoj: Indeed! We’ll have to adopt a batch production
system. McDonald’s assembly line systemwill simply not
work.
Preetha: True, all bakeries also use the batch production
system.
Manoj: Yes. So a unit may first produce a batch of
cupcakes; next, a batch of buns; then, a batch of cookies,
and so on.
Preetha: So how will we determine the optimal batch size?
In addition, what should the order of the jobs be?
Manoj: Those are challenges that need to be addressed.
The batch production systemis process oriented. We'll have
to study and find out which machines must be grouped
together and how the different jobs must be arranged.
[PAUSE]
Preetha: Hmm… so are there any typical problems
associated with batch processing?
Manoj: There are a few problems. For one, material
handling is more expensive. Another issue is that
production planning and control systems are more
complicated.
Preetha: What about the total production time?
Manoj: Production time is certainly much longer. There are

Lengthy production cycle other problems too. Nevertheless, let us not worry about
those for now. We have to go with the batch production
system, even if it has some downsides. [PAUSE]
Manoj: You know… our talk of samosas and cookies has
made me hungry. Should we head for the canteen?
Preetha: Sure, it’s time to grab a bite.
