Here are some guidelines for taking breaks when doing VDU (visual display unit) work such as computer work:
- Take a 5-10 minute break after 50-60 minutes of continuous screen work.
- During breaks, look into the distance to relax your eyes. Blink your eyes a few times.
- Stretch your arms, back, neck and legs during breaks to avoid muscle fatigue.
- Break up long periods of sitting with short periods of standing up or gentle exercises.
- Make sure to take your main lunch/meal break away from your screen if possible.
- Adjust your workstation ergonomics to avoid awkward postures that can cause strain.

3. Style sheet
The colors used are mainly dark when it comes down to the design
and when it comes down to the background there are extremely light
colors to show off the beauty of the design inside of the game and
then there are the dark colors such as the Witcher and the monsters
such as the fiend and the Giant and the harpies and the crows and
other black birds. The font used here is called DIN and the font is
placed on the left of the design which is on its side to make more
space for the design and also made it easy to tell what the product
actually is. The image styles are similar because it has a detailed main
character however it could do to have more colors on mine and also
could to have more designs to the actual piece and then there could
be more design in my characters too. I chose this mainly because I
said this would be close to one of the sides of my game and then it
just looked as if tonnes of design went into it and then there is the
actual characters and beasts and colors all of which look incredible
and two of them look as if they are from a horror movie and the
others look like they are from folk tales. The other thing that I like
about this piece everything flows and the font runs with the image
and could easily blend in with the design and also there is the
character design which is in the middle with a strong and idealistic
design which isn’t easy to forget and so this to me is a sign of
confidence from the developers and the artists who made this piece.
4. Style sheet
This poster uses mainly dark colors and to a lesser extent they use
lighter colors. They use dark colors such as crimson black grey and
brown. They use light colors such as orange cream yellow blue and
white. They use the darker colors too exploit the shadows and make
the actual design stand out easily and maybe to show the sanity of
the characters and then when it comes down to the light colors I
believe that these colors show a lack of sanity knowing what you
encounter in the game. The font used is called Willow Body this is
used at the bottom of the design as the colors stand out well on the
dark lower part of the poster. I want the image style to be like this
because it has lots of complex design and then also fitting in bits of
the map logos characters and the title I would say it does it’s job
well and would sell very well knowing the community. I would like
to use the layout the lovely use of contrast between the colors,
however the font seems a bit bland and would seem a little bit out
of place in a horror survival game. I picked this one mainly because I
said in my proposal that I would like the base of my products the
game to be similar to Borderlands. This design is also great because
it uses some of the main characters which shows a little bit of
confidence in the design where as the font indicates differently as it
doesn’t run with the image and is also right at the very front.
5. Style sheet
The colours used are mainly dark colours to create a sense of mystery and then
uses the light colours as an outline to the main design, it also looks as if the
light is coming from a projector and the design is part of the projection. The
dark colours in the design I believe is to make the setting look eerie and also
look as if the antagonist (the killer) could be hiding anywhere and then the area
is dimly lit by the moon light creating further suspense. Then there are the 5
people just to the right of the centre of the design they look as if they were
looking for someone or something creating the sense of someone in turn
hunting them as if they were trying to escape. It is also set in the woods one of
the more eerie places to set a horror game or movie. Then the outline of this
design is of a man made of or outlined by light and as the design is inside of the
man it looks as if he can either control the woods or he can easily track the
people as he knows the area well he is also holding a knife which goes to show
that it will be violent and there is blood on the knife which is dripping down
onto the font mixing the design with the font. The font used is called Friday 13
which is a series of fonts on dafont the one at the bottom of the poster is
called Friday 13SH, and it is the same for the one used at the top of the piece,
the fonts are used in this location because it is out of the way, it also gives a
name and a description to the game and the piece. There aren’t any similar
image styles in this one to the others and the design I don’t really like because
in the others they used lots of complex designs in a close confined area where-
as in this one there is just a design within a design and that just isn’t as fun as
the others however it is clever with the light shining as it does however I
definitely prefer the others. I would use the colour palate as it would
accompany the genre of horror action and would cement that fact from my
other slides and work for the FMP. I would also like to use the fonts however
this would make me have to choose between 2 great fonts . When it comes
down to the design and the image styles I wouldn’t borrow them unless
everything had to be brutally clear. This design is good because it has it’s own
font design as it is part of a bigger series however the font is large indicating a
lack of faith in the product and then there is the design which has the obscured
images which would indicate some form of confidence in the product.
6. Layout 1
Now with a
bazillion guns
This layout was easily made by using sourced
images from the internet all of them are from the
same game and so is the logo however as a layout
it was alright however it could have been better if I
could find a free download for the borderlands font
every place I found the exact font I needed cost
around a bouts 30£ and so I decided to go with the
normal Calibri (Body) which was a bad choice when
I look at it however the characters I found first I
had to change the pictures 2-3 times per character
and then I also had to find out how to make the
background of the picture in PowerPoint which
took quite a lot of time and then I realized this
could only work for one color and so then I had to
find a good enough picture of these characters
with a white background to go with it and so then
it was easy to edit and also easy to find a place for
the characters in the poster sort of design and the
other down side was that some of the white
background didn’t go transparent and so there are
quite a lot of white splodges left behind on the
design.
7. Layout 2
The
game
This layout was just a quick little thing
that I barley added anything to and as
a result of the design having so few
things and being larger it looks bland
and looks like it doesn’t even match up
to the first design even though there is
the same amount of work gone into it I
believe it is because that it is taking up
a larger area than the other one and I
only have small designs on this one
where as on the other I just put in a
few characters the only bit that I really
liked from this was the bird silhouettes
to the left and right of the main design
.
8. Mood Board
Myths and monsters in media
Mystic animals and crows
Creepy areas for a horror
9. Mood board analysis
• The myths and monsters in media includes the headless horseman, the rake, sleeping angels and Noonwraiths.
They use a large variety of colours they are mainly in quantity dark colours being used however they do use some
light colours which have more variety. The dark colours used are black grey crimson brown and then the light
colours used are green yellow orange blue cream and white. The dark colours that are used I believe are used to
create a sense of mystery and horror and also to add shadows and foreshadowing sort of effect, the light colours
that are used are used to create a background that you can easily see the design and also bring the design to life I
don’t believe it would really contribute to anything else except it may be helpful to distinguish fantasy from reality.
• Some of the image styles are pretty similar all of the pictures are pretty detailed and have a good colour scheme
to bring the characters and designs further to life where-as some are very different in design they have a less
detailed approach and has a blocked colouring sort of effect and has a large amount of the same colour in the
same places. It has the Calibri font however it does cloud the images and overload the image and became
overcomplicated.
• The tone used on these images are mainly to do with horror fear threats fantasy and action and adventure both
of the last 2 only to an extent however this is mainly due to the fact that they are all horror characters except for
one or two depending on how you see these things headless horseman is an old myth some people believed that
the story originated in Ireland Britain or America because most versions of the headless horseman he wears a
British redcoat as seen in the period of the American Civil War, the story goes that the headless horseman was
beheaded on the battlefield in the civil war and came back to life to take the heads of as many people as possible
in the American populace. The Rake is a myth of horror as it makes no noise can’t die and can contort its body in
which ever way it wants and so the only way that you will know about it is if you see it and it wants to be seen
legends say that it consumes the flesh of the populace to regain its humanity. The weeping angels aren’t real they
are part of the series called Doctor Who, they are one of the scariest enemies in the TV series there isn’t much to
them but if you don’t look at them they can move incredibly fast and kill you in an instant. Then there are the
Noonwraiths which are from the game series called the Witcher they are basically a form of ghost that can harm
others if they have deadly intent and can only be killed easily by using a silver sword and certain signs only a
Witcher could use, effectively all they are, are spectres who kill people.
10. Mood Board Analysis
• The mystic animals and crows use a lot of light colors in both quantity and variety and there are fewer darker
colors. The light colors used are blue green orange white yellow purple and turquoise, the dark colors used are
black grey and brown. The light colors that are used are to give the design a bold outline and makes the detail
easy to see I don’t believe the colors have a special meaning but if I had to say the pureness of a wild animal and
the dark colors that are used are used too give the design an outline easy to see and also I believe it is to give us a
sense of danger from the animals as 3of the 4 look lethal probably also because of great design.
• The font used is called the Morpheus font and the other I don’t know but it looks like the Hoefler text font this
one was used on either side of a design making the design stand out while also telling you what it was about
however there is no background design so it doesn’t have too much happening at once it is also based in a red
color which wouldn’t really go well on with a green background and the other is just the Witcher 3 font which is
neatly tucked into the corner to make the design stand out more than the name of the product it is from.
• The tone used in the fiend pictures it would mainly be fantasy and horror as the beast looks like it is just a really
badly mutated deer or maybe an elk however due to its size and its horns it looks as if it could tear your head off
at any point. The tone used in the crow pictures would mainly be associated with death and horror ( a bunch of
crows is a murder of crows) crows at one point even had their own horror movie and they are mainly associated
with death the biblical version as well as things dyeing because they carrion birds which mean that they feed on
dead animals. The tone used on the manticore pictures which is related closely to the mantyger both are creatures
that both have the the head of a man and a body of a lion which I’m guessing some would find it to be the work of
the devil and is the very embodiment of evil and fear. The tone used in the Golem pictures these creatures in
mythology and in fantasy games and stuff of the sort they are usually pretty nice they don’t pay much attention to
others however they are associated with the elements such as earth wind and fire however most are associated
with the earth and the protection of it so most people would link them with safety and protection.
11. Mood Board Analysis
• The colors used in the horror areas are mainly dark colors due to the gloominess of the horror
genre however there are a few light color however I believe that they just used the light colors to
make the design stand out more otherwise they wouldn’t have much of a design and nor would the
area be able to look as groggy as it does without the light colors. The dark colors that are used are
black grey dark green brown and crimson. The light colors that are used are blue green orange
yellow and white.
• The fonts used are called Calibri and Double feature. The double feature font is used on the poster
for the game horror hospital and adds to the design by adding a good horror based font.
• The tone used for the horror areas I may try to incorporate into my work is mainly based around
popular places for a horror so fear is the main factor for these places such as the woods to start the
woods are one of those places where you can meet anything during the night and still think that it
is scary if you can’t see it that is however if it is a monster you would be scared and it is also a
mysterious sort of area as we can see it would difficult to see small objects. Then there is the
hospital which not really a creepy place as such but when it is an old abandoned hospital with all
the old equipment such as scalpels and saws and medical stuff of that sort there is also blood all
over the place and there is lots of grime on the floors as it has been abandoned and so that makes a
grimy and gloomy area. Then there is the school which is usually just filled with children who are
just scary anyways they are bloody mental and just want to make you regret every choice you make.
Then there is the abandoned haunted house which will fill people with fear of the ghosts or just the
creepy old ornaments and old decorations and trophies come to life in either life sized versions or
bigger versions of them and with things being tossed about at random it wouldn’t help the notion
that we need to keep order in our lives.

15. http://www.hse.gov.uk/contact/faqs/vdubreaks.htm
Should VDU users be given breaks?
The relevant regulations are the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992. Regulation 4, is concerned with the daily activities of users and states:
'Every employer shall so plan the activities of users at work in his undertaking that their daily work on display screen equipment is periodically interrupted by such breaks or
changes of activity as reduce their workload at that equipment.'
The guidance states:
In most tasks, natural breaks or pauses occur as a consequence of the inherent organisation of the work. Whenever possible, jobs at display screens should be designed to
consist of a mix of screen-based and non screen-based work to prevent fatigue and to vary visual and mental demands. Where the job unavoidably contains spells of
intensive display screen work (whether using the keyboard or input device, reading the screen, or a mixture of the two), these should be broken up by periods of non-
intensive, non-display screen work. Where work cannot be so organised, e.g. in jobs requiring only data or text entry requiring sustained attention and concentration,
deliberate breaks or pauses must be introduced.
Where the display screen work involves intensive use of the keyboard, any activity that would demand broadly similar use of the arms or hands should be avoided during
breaks. Similarly, if the display screen work is visually demanding any activities during breaks should be of a different visual character. Breaks must also allow users to vary
their posture. Exercise routines which include blinking, stretching and focusing eyes on distant objects can be helpful and could be covered in training programmes.
It is not appropriate to lay down requirements for breaks which apply to all types of work; it is the nature and mix of demands made by the job which determine the length of
break necessary to prevent fatigue. But some general guidance can be given:
breaks should be taken before the onset of fatigue, not in order to recuperate and when performance is at a maximum, before productivity reduces. The timing of the break
is more important than its length;
breaks or changes of activity should be included in working time. They should reduce the workload at the screen, i.e. should not result in a higher pace or intensity of work on
account of their introduction;
short, frequent breaks are more satisfactory than occasional, longer breaks: e.g., a 5-10 minute break after 50-60 minutes continuous screen and/or keyboard work is likely to
be better than a 15 minute break every 2 hours;
if possible, breaks should be taken away from the screen;
Informal breaks, that is time spent not viewing the screen (e.g. on other tasks), appear from study evidence to be more effective in relieving visual fatigue than formal rest
breaks;
wherever practicable, users should be allowed some discretion as to how they carry out tasks; individual control over the nature and pace of work allows optimal distribution
of effort over the working day.
