It describes a modern day methodology that is frequently used to produce novel products and improve the quality of products effectively. This PPT includes only a few of the methods that have been discovered. Kindly inform if any corrections or inclusions are needed. And yes, suggestions are always heartily welcome.

4. What is
transgenesis?
It is the process of introducing an exogenous
gene (transgene) into a new living organism
so that the organism will exhibit the new
property and transmit the same to its offspring.
Transgene - The newly introduced gene
sequence or DNA.
5. Methods prior to Transgenesis
In both animals and plants:
• Selective breeding
• In breeding
• Out breeding
In plants only:
• Vegetative propagation
• Grafting
6. Uses Of
Transgenesis• Toxicology – Detection of toxicants
• In humans, for disease detection
• In molecular biology, for analysis of regulation of gene expression
• In developing organisms, especially for xenografting i.e. to modify
the antigenic makeup of an organism so that their tissues and organs
can be used in transfusions and transplants.
• To genetically engineer hormones to aid in increase of milk yield,
meat production; genetically engineer livestock to study the
modification in animal physiology and/or anatomy.
• To speed up the introduction of existing characters into a
strain/breed for improvement and modification.
• In pharmaceutical industry, for specific pharmaceutical protein
production, drug production, and drug efficacy testing.
8. Next Gen Products in
the Pipeline
• Golden Rice
• Turfgrass
• Biosteel
• Decaffeinated coffee
• Disease resistant bananas, cassava, sweet potatoes
etc.
• Bananas to deliver Hepatitis vaccine
• Apples for protection against RSV (Respiratory
Syncytial Virus)
9. Methods for
Transgenesis• Genetic Engineering (r-DNA technology)*
• Microinjection
• Embryonic stem cell mediated transfer
• Retrovirus mediated gene transfer
• Agrobacterium mediated gene transfer
• Gene gun (Biolistics)
NOTE:
*First and most important step
17. Implications Of
TransgenesisPositive
• Many valuable pharmaceutical
products such as clotting
factors, human protein
coagulant, α-1 antitrypsin for
deficiency treatment, insulin
for diabetes treatment,
growth hormones for various
deficiencies etc.
• Treat human diseases and
defects
• Improving plants
• Improving animals
Negative
• Unpredictability
• Biosafety concerns
• Ethical issues
• Unintended effects
• Allergenicity
• Toxicity
