2. Introduction
Must get the word out to be successful
Have a specific plan of who to contact and what to say
Make sure to know the FCC laws and regulations when
soliciting to people and businesses
Be knowledgeable in what you are “selling”
Speak confidently and intelligently about yourself and
your classes
3. Who to Contact
Our classes are applicable to anyone who loves
animals
The best groups to target are
Veterinary clinics/hospitals
Animal shelters/rescues
Pet businesses such as doggie daycares, pet sitters, pet
stores, groomers, etc
4H groups, boy/girl scouts, FFA, school groups are also a
good option
Children can take a class but must be 9 years old or older to
get certified
4. Communicating
Talking to people in person is the best way to generate
interest in hosting a class or even coming to a class
Passing out flyers to local businesses/groups
Other ways to communicate about your classes include
Hanging flyers on community bulletin boards
Sending out emails
Calling various groups
Mailing postcards
Setting up a table at a pet fair, dog walk, 5k, convention,
etc.
6. Regulations
The FCC (Federal Communication Commission) has laws and
regulations that prohibit the sending of unsolicited advertisements.
This will apply to any emails or faxes that you send to promote
your classes or try to advertise for places to book a class with you.
It is important that anytime you send an email or a fax to any
person or business you put the appropriate “opt out” statement at
the bottom of the email or fax.
Anyone that contacts you to be removed from your communication
must be removed immediately and you cannot ever send another
communication to them through that media.
If you do contact that person/business again with a solicitation you
are liable for legal action. At a minimum the fines start at $500 per
incident.
7. “Opt Out” Statements
The Opt Out statement for emails should read:
If you no longer want to receive emails from (state your name or
business) please reply “unsubscribe” to this email and you will
be removed from our distribution list. Thank you
The Opt Out statement for faxes should read:
If you no longer wish to receive faxes from (state your name or
business) please contact us at (list your email address) and you
will be removed from our distribution list. Thank you
8. Follow Up
After you have contacted a place (through email, fax,
phone, mail or even in person) to host a class you
should follow up with them within 3-5 business days if
you have not heard from them.
Make sure to get the name of a specific person to contact
at each location
It is helpful to make a spreadsheet of places/people
you have contacted about a class, the dates you
followed up with them and the result of that
communication
9. Promotional Materials
Pet Emergency Education supplies instructors with
electronic flyers and promotional coupons that they can
print out and use to promote classes.
Anytime the company runs a special such as group
discounts, complimentary registrations and shelter
donations instructors are given promotional materials to
use to promote such benefits.
Instructors are encouraged to create and purchase
their own promotional materials.
Every instructor is allowed copyright use of our logo for
promotional purposes
