4. INTRODUCTION
• Homestead garden is a traditional agroforestry system
and an important component in the livelihoods of rural
poor, and in the rural economy of the country.
• A homestead garden is intended to utilize the space
around a house to grow vegetables and limited food
crops.
• Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency.
5. • The word “homegarden” consists of diverse practices, from
growing vegetables behind houses to complex multistoried
systems.
• “Tropical Homegardens” consists of assemblage of plants,
which may include trees, shrubs,vines and herbaceous
plants, growing in or adjacent to a homestead or home
compound.
• Integration of trees, crops and animals in a same unit of land
in some form of spatial and temporal sequence within the
compounds of individual houses.
6. Where it is practised in India ?
• High Rainfall areas of South and South-East Asia.
• In India it is prevalent in Southern states like
Kerala,Tamil Nadu.
• Also common in North Eastern states like Assam,
Tripura, West Bengal and Parts of Island of
Andaman and Nicobar.
7. Characteristics of Homegardens:
• Tall Timber Trees.
• Trees provide timber, fruits & also support climber
such as cucrbit.
• eg. Anacardium occidentale , Artocarpus
heterophyllus , Cocus nucifera.
TOP LAYER
• Food crops such as banana, papaya
occupies layer of 1-3m .
MIDDLE LAYER
• Herbaceous plants.
• Mostly Vegetables upto 1m of height.
• eg. Tomato, cabbage, potato, pepper etc.
LOWER LAYER
8. Area varies from 0.2-0.5 ha.
Cattle and Poultry are the main
components of homestead
Pineapple is the most common fruit
grown.
In Hills the common spp. for home
gardens is Grewia optiva,Ficus
glomerata, Juglans regia.
9. In Rural areas fruit trees and commercial
tree spp. such as Acacia and Neem are of
common occurence.
Located near the residence.
High Diversity of plants.
Occupy a small area.
