3. Chia Plant
• Chia belongs to the mint family and is native
to Central and Southwest Mexico &
Guatemala. The plant is grown for its omega
3 fatty acid rich seeds. The seeds yield about
34% of oil. Chia oil has 64 % omega-3 fatty
acids.
• Chia is grown commercially in Mexico,
Argentina, Guatemala, Bolivia, Australia and
Equador. Australia is the leading producer of
chia seeds
4. Chia seed
• Chia seeds are the seeds of the plant Salvia hispanica.
• They are tiny seeds that come in white, grey, brown and black
colors. The seeds have a mottled design on the seed coat.
These seeds were used by the ancient Aztec and Mayan
warriors during combat times as a survival food. Hence it is
also called a wonder food. The ancient running messengers
also used it as an energy food and so it is also called the
"Indian Running Food".
• Chia seeds can be used whole or ground, in any way. They
can be added to yogurt, smoothies, soups, juices like those of
oranges, sprinkled on salads or foods or added to baked
goods like muffins, cookies etc. It can even be added to water,
stirred a couple of times to break the clumps of seeds that
form together. In about 15 minutes it forms a gel. This gel can
be drunk as it is.
