2. Indo-Pakistani War of 1971
The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 was a military
confrontation between India and Pakistan that occurred
during the Bangladesh Liberation War in East
Pakistan from 3 December 1971 to the fall of
Dacca (Dhaka) on 16 December 1971. The war began
with Operation Chengiz Khan's preemptive aerial strikes
on 11 Indian air stations, which led to the
commencement of hostilities with Pakistan and Indian
entry into the war for independence in East Pakistan on
the side of Bengali nationalist forces, expanding
existing conflict with Indian and Pakistani forces
engaging on both eastern and western fronts
3. Why is Vijay Diwas celebrated?
• Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 16th December every year to mark
the significance of India’s victory in 1971 Indo Pak war.
• This day led to the liberation of East Pakistan and the creation
of the new state of Bangladesh.
• Thus, Vijay Diwas is also celebrated as Bijoy Dibos in
Bangladesh, which signifies the official independence of
Bangladesh from Pakistan.

9. Impact of Indo-Pakistani War of 1971
• Constitution of war enquiry commission by Pakistani government to
carry out thorough investigations into the intelligence, strategic,
political and military failures that caused the defeat in the war.
• Signing of Simla agreement on 2 July 1972 between India and
Pakistan providing insurance to Bangladesh that Pakistan recognized
Bangladesh’s sovereignty, in exchange for the return of the
Pakistani prisoners of war.
• Establishing of international crimes Tribunal in 2010 to investigate
and prosecute suspects for the genocide committed in 1971 by the
Pakistan Army and their local collaborators, Razakars, Al – Badr and
Al – Shams during the Bangladesh liberation war.
