As mentioned before, ∼に 行きます expresses the idea of

“going to do something”.

!

Say one of your colleague tells you “I will go to eat lunch.” as;
ひる

い 

昼ごはんを 食べに 行きます。
However, would you be able to guarantee that the colleague will be
back to the office because this person never mentions to come
back in the above statement.
ひる

昼ごはんを 食べに 行きます。
There’s no guarantee that the speaker will be back to where he/she makes this statement.

I’ll go to eat lunch.

I’m full now.

Well then,,,,

Where has she gone?
There’s another expression to express the idea of going to do
something then coming back;
I’ll go to eat lunch.

昼ごはんを 食べます。

I’ll come (back from where I eat).

来ます。

Did you notice that the above format is what we learned as
“sequence of actions” in Book 1, connecting multiple actions by “teform”.

Now there’s a guarantee that the speaker will be back to where he/she makes this statement.

  • 2. い  き 〜に 行きます vs. 〜て 来ます い  As mentioned before, ∼に 行きます expresses the idea of “going to do something”. ! Say one of your colleague tells you “I will go to eat lunch.” as; ひる た い  昼ごはんを 食べに 行きます。 However, would you be able to guarantee that the colleague will be back to the office because this person never mentions to come back in the above statement.
  • 3. ひる た い  昼ごはんを 食べに 行きます。 There’s no guarantee that the speaker will be back to where he/she makes this statement. I’ll go to eat lunch. I’m full now. Well then,,,, Where has she gone?
  • 4. There’s another expression to express the idea of going to do something then coming back; I’ll go to eat lunch. ひる た 昼ごはんを 食べます。 + + I’ll come (back from where I eat). き 来ます。 Did you notice that the above format is what we learned as “sequence of actions” in Book 1, connecting multiple actions by “teform”. ひる た 昼ごはんを 食べます て ひる た + き 来ます。 き 昼ごはんを 食べて 来ます。
  • 5. ひる た き 昼ごはんを 食べて 来ます。 Now there’s a guarantee that the speaker will be back to where he/she makes this statement. I’ll go to eat lunch, then I’ll come back. I’m full now. Well then, I’ll be back to my work at the office. ork! W W ork! ork! W
  • 6. い Drill : Describe each illustration in the next page by using “∼に 行きます” as き non-guaranteed pattern and “∼て 来ます” as guaranteed pattern. Example かい   non-guaranteed : ジュースを 買いに 行きます。 か  guaranteed : い  き ジュースを 買って 来ます。
