2. Existing Product- National Geographic
CalendarThe photographs on the calendar are
taken all over the world from sunsets,
mountains and other landscapes. The
images are not taken in studios, they
are taken all over the world from
forests, mountains and the ocean. The
type of shot tends to be a long shot so
that you can fit as much of the
landscape into the photograph as
possible. The pictures have been
edited so that the colours appear
brighter and grab your attention. The
prominent colours in the picture have
been enhanced so that they stand out
more. The lighting is bright, even when
the pictures have been taken at sunset.
The photographs are a long shot that
are almost an ariel view as it shows the
sky, sea and mountains all in one
picture.
There is a range of locations in the
calendar. For example there are
pictures of the Grand Canyon and
the countryside. There is a
prominent colour scheme on the
calendar. Nat Geo has the iconic
yellow and black colour scheme so
that it stands out but is still simple
and classy. The colour scheme on the
photographs tends to be mostly
purple, orange and green. The colour
green has connotations to nature
which connects perfectly with the
calendar. Purple is bright and catches
your attention. Orange has
connotations to heat which makes
the reader picture somewhere warm
in summer months which can bring
happiness.
The calendar was released in 2018 and was printed in Germany.
The pictures are all exclusive to the calendar. The images were
taken by National Geographic Photographers throughout the
year.
3. The font is white which fits in with the simple colour
scheme. The font is not bold and does not
necessarily stand out, however the reader knows it is
Nat Geo because the brand is extremely famous. The
calendar appeals to the audience because the
pictures are exclusive. They are bright and colourful
and appealing to look at. The calendar is reasonably
priced at $13.99, however you are paying for the
quality of the images.
I have chosen to look at this calendar because Nat
Geo are known for taking outstanding photos of
nature, therefore I thought it would be interesting to
look at their work and how they layout the
calendars. I have learned that I need to create a logo
for my branding and need to create a name for my
calendar.
This has helped me with my production
because I know how I want to lay out
my calendar in the most effective way. I
want there to be three images on the
cover of the calendar so that all the
photographs that are featured inside
are not given away. I also know that I
want borders around my photographs
to give them more structure and
framing. Finally, I would like to include a
title for the calendar to make it unique
and original. Analyzing this calendar
cover has helped me with my
production because my knowledge has
expanded about the designs and
layouts for a calendar. I assessed which
layouts I like and did not like and why
which helped me during production
massively.
Researching this calendar has been beneficial to me
because I buy calendars so I am aware of the
techniques used on them. However, looking at this
specific calendar has been beneficial because Nat
Geo is a very famous brand and is known for
photographing the best wildlife, landscape and
nature shots. Therefore, studying these photographs
and how they are portrayed has improved the
quality of my own photography and has made my
calendar look much more professional.
This calendar has been created so that
people can have nice photographs on
their wall monthly that are professional
and high quality. The calendar is not only
aesthetically appealing but also helps
organize the audiences personal life. The
monthly pictures act as temporary
posters that the audience can
repurchase each year to get new
pictures.
4. National Geographic- Magazine
The audience for the National Geographic Magazine is mainly males aged between 18-24
years old. His views on politics are mainly right wing, however it is nearly split in the
middle. The top region for the magazine are Scotland. The main profession is law or
emergency services which means that the audience enjoys reading the magazine in their
spare time instead of actually studying photography or journalism.
5. Existing Product- Beverley Wildlife
Photographic Exhibition
I visited the Beverley Wildlife
Photographic Exhibition because I
thought it would be interesting to
look at award winning pictures.
The pictures were spread across
several rooms and hanged on the
wall. On the left hand side of the
images, there was information
about the photograph. For
example, who it was taken by and
where it was taken. It also had the
type of camera that it was pictured
on which was interesting because I
noticed that several of the award
winning images were taken on the
same style camera. The walls were
white so that the focus was on the
images. This allowed the colours in
the images to stand out more and
grab your attention.
There was over 100 award
winning images on display. The
pictures were all of wildlife and
nature. The colour schemes
varied on each image, however
nearly all the images had green
running through it. The colour
green has connotations to nature,
life and energy. The colour is
bright to grab your attention and
stand out. Several of the images
had a colour scheme of black,
dark blue and dark purple. This
highlighted the night life of
nature. The dark colours have
connotations to danger and
mystery. The majority of the shots
were long shots. This is because
the scenic views, nature and
wildlife can all fit into the frame.
Therefore, the viewer has more
things to look at in the image
which influences the photograph
to be more interesting.
Another way this event appeals to
the audience is because there are
workshops, talks and family events
which means the exhibition can
interest a range of people and have
a wider audience. I chose to
research this exhibition because I
enjoyed the day looking at the
photographs. Researching this
exhibition has gave me ideas of how
to layout the exhibition and design
the map as well as adding more
events in the guide such as talks
and workshops.
6. The exhibition was advertised in the local newspaper as well
as the local news. This makes the audience interested in the
advert because there was a colourful poster that grabbed
your attention. The exhibition is an event that has been
shown for over 50 years and is developed and produced by
the National History Museum London.
The exhibition itself is very simple and basic as the main focus is on the images. The information that is at the side of
the photograph is black and white to make sure your main focus is on the picture. The font is small to highlight that it is
optional to read. The photographs were all different sizes so that the layout was not just the same over again. The
photograph that won the best photograph of the year was much larger and filled the whole wall. Whereas, other
pictures that won few awards were much smaller. There was also a video at the beginning of the exhibition that had a
slideshow of the pictures and information of what awards they had won. Furthermore, the audience could sit down and
watch the slideshow and learn more information as well as seeing them on a different platform.
Researching about the exhibition has been extremely helpful for me during production. Because I visited the exhibition, I
could picture how the photographs were show cased as well as what the information included. From my research, I
decided that I wanted to show case my photographs in the same way with plaques underneath with information about
the location and the equipment used. The exhibition was created to show case a range of photographers work that is
award winning. Seeing the photographs on TV or in a magazine is too small and you can not see the quality of the image
or in detail. When visiting an exhibition, the photographs are enlarged onto canvas where you can get close and read
more information. Another meaning of the exhibition is to purchase the prints or other merchandise with the
photographs on. There are some times activities on where you can ask questions and learn new techniques that are
beneficial to all.
7. Existing Product- Wildlife
Photographer Of The Year Poster
This is a poster advertising the wildlife
photographer of the year exhibition. There is a
picture that fills half the page so that the viewer
can get a glimpse of what type of pictures they will
see at the exhibition. The colours on the image are
very neutral and plain. The colour grey has
connotations to have no emotion and suggest loss
or depression. The colour brown has connotations
to autumn and winter as well as earth and nature.
These colours have been paired together to
highlight that the animal is looking at unusual
footprints. The title on top of the photograph has a
blue border. The colour blue has connotations to
the sky and the sea. The colour scheme has general
connotations to nature and the earth which is what
the event is all about. The fonts on the page vary in
size. The titles are bold and large, however the
information about the event is actually small and
written in white. It has been designed like this so
that the image is the product that grabs your
attention and influences you to want to know what
it is for etc.
The photograph appears to be taken near water
as there is a bird and what seems to look like
footprints in the sand. The image is a medium
shot which means we can not see the
background or any of the scenery. This is
because the focus is intended to be on the bird
staring at the footprints. Having a long shot
would distract the focus and you would loose
the footprints in the image. The photograph has
slightly dark lighting, however the fur on the
bird looks bright. The image has been edited so
that the location looks more lonely, bare and
depressing. The bird takes up the majority of
the picture which highlights that the
photographer wanted the viewer to focus on
this more; then the footprints so that the you
build a story of what has happened to the
animal.
The exhibition is produced by the National History Museum in London. The event
has been running for years and has lots of grand title winners. This poster makes the
audience want to visit the exhibition because there is more than one event
advertised: photographer of the year and water colour images. It also advertises
one image that is in the running for photographer of the year which gives the viewer
an insight to the images that will be shown at the exhibition. I chose to look at this
poster because I wanted to find the best way to layout the poster where it is
colourful and interests the reader. Analyzing this poster has taught me to add an
image on my poster that fills up the majority of the page and stands out.
8. My research has proven beneficial because I was able to study other layouts and
designs and see how I want to layout my own poster. I want my poster to be split
into three triangles that are different bright colours. At the top of the page there
will be a drawing of the exhibition itself that I would have photographed then
drawn over. Underneath I will include the information for the exhibition ( date,
location and times). My research has been beneficial because I did not know
whether to include a photograph that will be displayed or try a new abstract style.
Analyzing this poster made me realize that I wanted to try something new and not
have a traditional looking photography exhibition poster. The poster has been
created to advertise the exhibition. It has to interest the reader and make them
want to visit the exhibition and possibly purchase merchandise. I wanted to create
a poster as a way of promoting the exhibition and interesting a different target
audience ( young people aged from teenagers above).
9. Existing Product- Wildlife
Photographer Of The Year 2014
This photograph was
taken by Michael Nichols
and won the award
wildlife photographer of
the year in 2014. The
picture was taken in
Serengeti National Park
in Tanzania on a Canon
EOS 5D camera. He
followed the pride for
months so that the lions
became used to his
presence as well as
allowing him to study the
animals and follow their
routines. He
photographed the lions
in infrared to improve
the image quality.
This photograph almost
looks like it was taken at an
ariel view, where the camera
is placed above looking
down at the pride of lions. It
is a long shot image where
you can see the desert in the
background, the sky, and the
lions in the foreground. The
photo is in black and white
which has connotations to
simplicity. Furthermore,
Nichols was possibly
suggesting that the lions are
sleeping, something that is
not fascinating nor
spectacular. The general
colour of the image is grey
which has connotations to
boredom which is exactly
what the lions are feeling.
This image influences the audience to go visit the
exhibition because it is an award winning
photograph. The image is such high quality with
fascinating nature and scenery that the audience
feels excited and intrigued to see more images as
spectacular as this one. I chose to analyse this
image so that I could learn what techniques I could
incorporate into my photography to improve the
quality. This has helped in my project because I
have the knowledge of how to make the audience
interested in your photography and want to see
more.
10. Photography
The people who enjoy photography are mainly males aged over 55. The top region is
Northern Scotland as well as the West Country. Once again the political views are right but
can be split evenly. The professions are architecture or working within media. This means
that the audience enjoys photography as a hobby as well as a profession. Because these
professions have a good pay, the monthly spare money rate is £1000 or more. This money
can be spent on new expensive, high quality equipment or travelling to take new
photographs around the world.
11. Existing Product- Natural History
Museum Guide Book
This is one of the guide books
from the National History
Museum. Whilst researching
for examples of guide books,
walk throughs and posters, I
could only find products find
the NHM. The design on this
guide book is very simple. For
example, the colour scheme is
basic with only white and blue.
The colour blue has
connotations to water and
nature which is what the
museum is all about. The
colour white is simple and basic
with connotations to purity.
There is barely any text on the
guide except the museum and
what the book is. The text is
small therefore it does not grab
the audiences attention very
well. Because there is not much
on the front cover, it looks
quite boring and something
that the audience would not be
interested in purchasing. The
selected image on the cover
highlights to the reader what
the book is about and what the
museum has to offer, although
it does not show everything
that the museum has. There
are several different art
exhibitions that are not
highlighted on the cover.
12. The background images appears to be taken in one of the
exhibitions at the museum. The picture has been edited and
covered in blue to make it less visible. In the foreground, there is
bones from a skeleton. This has been edited to appear brighter
and whiter to grab the audiences attention. I analysed this product
because I thought it would be beneficial for me to look at guide
book covers so I have inspiration for my own. However, I do not
like the design of this guide book because I do not think it looks
exciting nor interesting. It has helped me to create my own
product because I now know what I would do different to this
example and what I would avoid as well as what techniques I
would copy.
The guide book has been created to act as a souvenir from the exhibition. People that have visited the exhibition
can take something away with them to make them remember the event and the photography: it acts as a memory
as well as providing much more information and learning techniques. I wanted to create a guide book because I
usually purchase something from an exhibition to act as a memory, therefore I thought that the target audience
from the exhibition would enjoy receiving a free guide book where they can keep smaller versions of the pictures.
Researching the guide book has proven beneficial because I got to look at a piece of work that is more abstract.
The guide book cover is different to other guide books as it does not have photographs on the cover. Instead, the
background is blurred and blue to make it stand out. This has helped me with my production because I decided
that I did not want my guide book to appear in this style ,( like my poster). I wanted there to be a landscape shot to
make it more interesting.
13. Existing Product- National History
Museum Walk Through
This is a map for the National
History Museum which is in
London. It has been designed
in colour schemes to signify
the different levels. The map
is shown in an ariel view
highlighting all the different
levels, halls and rooms. The
colours link to the text at the
bottom of the map which
tells you what it is. This layout
is simple and easy to
understand which suits every
customer that visits the
museum.
The font is bold and black
so that it is easy to read
and understand for the
customers and tourists.
The lighting on the image is
very bright so that it is
clear to read and find
exactly where the
customer wants to visit.
The image has been edited
so that the graphics are
clearer and more high
quality.
The target audience for this map is for the older generation. This is because the map is detailed. I think it
would be a difficult map for teenagers or children to read because it the view of the museum has different
points of view/frame. I have chosen to study this map because I would like to create a map for my
photography exhibition. I was unsure how to layout the map where it would be easy to read and
understand. I would like to copy the technique of using colour coding as this is easy to understand.
However, I would not design the image like this. I have learned that the colour scheme does not need to
match the other products as shown in this example because other products from the National History
Museum that I have researched follow the same colour scheme.
14. Researching the map was very difficult because I struggled to find an example in the style
that I wanted to create. The National History Museum map is very detailed and
graphically created very well. I do not have the skills to draw the map in this much detail.
Therefore it did not really help me with my production because I wanted the map to be
extremely simple and basic so that all visitors could understand. Instead the map delayed
production because I spent over a week creating the map and I am still not happy with
the outcome. The map has been created so that customers at the exhibition can navigate
around the museum and find what they are looking for quickly and easily. It highlights
where everything is so that customers are not stressed and confused. On my map, I
created a colour code which means my map is no where near as detailed as this map
because I coloured the box in the corresponding colour. This will impact on my future
work because I do not think I will create a map again on Photoshop. I think that it should
have been created on a software that was designed for this specifically.
16. Styles Of Photography
Here is a list of photography styles that I would like to incorporate into my products. The main styles will be
landscape and wildlife photography, however these other genres may be featured.
• Landscape Photography- One of the most popular types of photography where you portray
scenery.
• Fashion Photography- Photography to promote a product ,(clothing items). Location, lighting and
makeup play a big role in fashion photography.
• Fine Art Photography- A photograph where the photographer creates their own fiction in a
made up environment.
• Documentary Photography- A picture that tells a story usually part of someone's life. A subject
is brought up that the photographer wants to highlight.
• Street Photography- Capturing everyday normal life on a street as life happens.
• Wildlife Photography- Capturing wildlife/animals in their natural habitat.
• Portrait Photography- Capturing moods, expressions and emotions. Usually close up but can be
body portraits. The face is the focus.
18. Landscape Photography
Landscape photography is one of the main three themes that I will use across all my products. This
photograph was taken in Canada. The colour scheme on this photograph is mainly blue and green. Both
colours have connotations to the earth and nature. This photograph is a long shot so that you can fit the
water, mountains and sky. This type of shot means that you can get fit lots of background into the image
which gives the audience more to look at. The angle of the camera is down low where the photography
has taken the image at eye level. This type of angle means that you can fit both the floor and sky. The
reflection has been edited so that it is stronger and more visible.
19. Wildlife Photography
Wildlife photography is another theme that I would like to incorporate across my products. One
important step in my own wildlife photography is that I you have to capture something that people do
not see every day otherwise the photographs are not as interesting. This photograph is a medium shot
of the tiger because you can clearly see the tiger as well as some of the background. The tiger is looking
into the camera lens which makes the photograph more powerful. Direct eye contact makes the subject
have the power in the photograph. The angle is slightly looking up to the tiger which makes it look like
the tiger is looking down at the camera which makes the tiger seem even more powerful. The colour
scheme in this photograph is orange and white. The orange fur stands out against the all white
background because it is such a bright colour. Capturing the background also allows the audience to see
the habitat of the tiger which further interests them. Finally, this image fits perfectly with the rule of
thirds. The tigers face is perfectly in the centre square which means the audiences eye is naturally drawn
to the tiger first.
20. Street Photography
I am unsure of how I am going to incorporate street photography into my work, however I have
some ideas of capturing the River Ouse or the Museum Gardens. This photograph is a long shot
because you can see the floor, street and sky. The photograph is taken at eye level where the
audience see’s what they would naturally see on the street. The lighting of the photograph is very
dark with the only colour being the red balloons. The red balloons fall perfectly on the right line
on the rule of thirds so the eye is naturally drawn to this subject first. I would like to copy this
technique when taking images at the River Ouse so that a bright green tree follows on the rule of
thirds line and stands out against the grainy background. There is no direct eye contact into the
camera lens on the photograph which means that the subjects do not have any more power than
the audience. The subjects also are a mixture of males and females. The purpose of this is to
make sure one gender is not more dominant than the other. On the street, you would naturally
see a range of people which makes the photograph seem more natural.
21. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched
products have?
Most of the products that I have researched are produced by the National History
Museum. This is because I found it difficult to find a guide book and map for any
other exhibitions. The photography exhibitions have been advertised the same
way by using posters to advertise in the newspaper.
• What aspects of the research will you include
within your own production work?
I would like to include the same colour scheme across all my products so that they
all connect and the customer knows what brand they were produced by. I would
also like to include how the nature photography exhibition photographs were
displayed on the wall with plaques on the side of the pictures. Finally, I would like
to include an award winning photograph on the cover of my poster so that the
audience knows what the exhibition has to offer.
23. Audience research
• Observation: The first question on my survey was what is your gender? The majority of 63%
are male who completed the survey with 37% female.
• What this says about my audience: This tells me that audience are mainly
male than female. Therefore I am sceptical about my results as I do not think a nature calendar would
interest males as much as females.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will
appeal to this audience because the males could be interested in photography and exhibitions which could
also bring new creative ideas to my attention.
24. Audience research
• Observation: The second question on my survey was how old are you? I wanted the survey to be filled in by 16-19 year
olds and the interview questions to be asked to people that are 20+. The majority of the people that completed my survey were 16-19
years old with 3 people aged 20+.
• What this says about my audience: This highlights to me that my products will appeal to an older
audience because people aged from 16-19 tend to not be interested in nature and wildlife.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to an older
audience because the products include photographs of nature, wildlife and scenic views. However, my exhibition will appeal to the
younger audience because I will create a photography exhibition which means that young aspiring photographers can learn new
techniques and ask the professional photographers questions. The photography exhibition will also feature workshops and question and
answer sessions with professional photographers which could interest a younger audience.
25. Audience research
• Observation: The third question I asked was what theme of images would you prefer to see on a portfolio? My results highlight to me
that nature and wildlife has equalled in votes. This means that I get to choose between the themes which one I would like to create. Personally, I
would prefer to create a nature portfolio and a wildlife exhibition. Only 32% wanted to see a portfolio based on scenic views which means the
audience are not that interested in landscape images.
• What this says about my audience: This highlights to me that a younger audience would prefer to see nature and
wildlife images rather than scenic views. A scenic views portfolio appeals more to an older audience who enjoy the outdoors, hiking, walking etc. My
audience would rather see something different and unique such as nature and wildlife photographs of animals that you don’t see everyday that
surround you.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this audience because even
if I create a nature or wildlife portfolio, 47% of the audience will be happy. However, the other percentage have other products to look at that will
revolve around that theme. For example, I would like to create a nature themed portfolio with a wildlife photography exhibition. The calendar I am
going to produce will feature all three themes; scenic views, nature and wildlife. This means that all my products cover all the themes that the
audience would like to see.
26. Audience research
• Observation: Another question I asked was how much would you expect to pay for a nature themed calendar?
The majority voted for £6-£10. 42% voted for under £5 and no one voted for more than £11.
• What this says about my audience: This highlights to me that people want to buy a
calendar that has high quality photographs with great editing. You are paying for the quality in a calendar: therefore, no one
would pay £11 or more because I am not a professional photographer and the pictures will not be outstanding, however
they will not be low quality where it is worth nothing.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to
this audience because I wanted the calendar to be priced in this price range from £6-£10. Personally, I would like to make
the calendar £8 so that it is high quality and filled with great photographs but also affordable.
27. Audience research
• Observation: I asked the audience what would interest them to visit a photography exhibition. Over 70% said that they
would like to see workshops, question and answer sessions as well as award winning photographs on display. 20% of people said that
they only wanted to see award winning photographs and 10% said they would like to just see workshops.
• What this says about my audience: This highlights to me that a younger audience want to see a
range of events at an exhibition. They do not want to just see photographs as this could bore them, they want to learn about
photography and the best equipment to take the best photographs. No one would want to visit an exhibition that only offered a
question and answer interview with the photographer because you do no get to see any of the images. They want to see a range of
different things to keep them interested and enjoying the experience.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this audience
because I wanted to feature a mixture of all these things in my exhibition to interest a range of people. The different things going on in
the exhibition can extend the audience and bring more people. There will mainly be award winning photographs on display as this is
what it is all about, however there will be other events like interviews and workshops to learn about photography.
28. Audience research
• Observation: One question that I asked was whether the audience would be interested in purchasing a nature
calendar? 51% said that they would purchase the calendar whereas 49% said they wouldn’t.
• What this says about my audience: This highlights to me that my product is targeted
more at an older audience. People aged from 16-19 years old said that they would purchase the calendar, however the votes
are very close. My audience would purchase the calendar as a gift rather than for themselves.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to
my audience because people aged from 16-19 years old can purchase the calendar because they are interested in the
photographs/calendar, or they will buy the calendar as a gift for someone else. People who do not want to purchase the
nature calendar could potentially be interested in the nature portfolio or the wildlife photography exhibition. Other products
that I am going to create could interest the audience more than other products.
29. Audience research
• Observation:I asked the audience what they would like to see on a poster advertising a photography exhibition and the
majority said award winning photographs on display. 25% said they would want to see information about the photography. I also
created a ‘other’ comment section where two people responded: they said that they would like to see award winning photographs as
well as information about the photography.
• What this says about my audience: This could possibly suggest that my audience are more interested
in looking at photographs than learning about equipment etc. They like to learn visually rather than reading information. 25% voted
that they wanted to see information which means they want to learn and progress but also know what they can take away from the
exhibition. The exhibition can provide workshops and question and answer sessions with the professional photographers so this will
intrigue them more.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to the audience
because the poster will be designed so that there is my favourite picture I have taken on the front taking up half the page. Underneath
the image there will be information about the photograph and the exhibition it is advertising. The photograph on the page will make
the poster appear brighter and more colourful as well as grabbing peoples attention which small information would not necessarily do.
There will plenty of information at the exhibition as I want there to be plaques at the side of the photographs with all the information.
There will also be guide books at the exhibition which have even more information.
30. Audience research
• Observation: Another question I asked was what colour the audience would like to see on the nature calendar. The
majority wanted to see blue and green. 30% voted for yellow and green and 10% voted for green and purple. Only 5% wanted yellow
and purple. I gave the audience several choices so that the audience could pick exactly what they wanted and what they thought would
fit best for the calendar.
• What this says about my audience: This suggests that people voted for blue and green because they
have strong connotations to nature. For example, blue has a connotation to the sky and water, whereas green has connotations to the
earth, grass, trees etc. This indicates that the audience believe that the colour scheme on the product has to link and have connotations
to the product you are actually promoting. The audience did not see what purple and yellow had to connotations to within nature,
therefore it was ruled out.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this audience
because I will make the colour scheme on the calendar blue and green so that it links with the photographs and theme over all my
products. This colour scheme will also be portrayed on my poster, guide book and map. Other colours that people voted for will also be
shown throughout the pictures as I will photograph flowers that have this theme.
31. Audience research
• Observation: Question 9 was what would interest the audience on a nature photography portfolio. Over 60%
said that they would be mainly interested in the photographs. 20% said that they would like to see information about the
photographs and 12% said that they would like to see images and information about photographers that have inspired me to
create my work. Once again, I included a other comment box so that people could contribute their creative ideas.
• What this says about my audience: This highlights to me that the people that
completed the survey like to look visually rather than read information about the pictures or photographers. This would
possibly interest people who are older that have passion for photography and want to learn new things.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to
this audience because I would like to include all the elements on my portfolio. The photographs will take up the majority of
the portfolio because it is what it is all about. Surrounding the images I will include information about the photographs
which is optional to read. I will incorporate some images and information but my inspiration, however it will be small so that
the main focus is on my images and my equipment etc.
32. Audience research
• Observation: The final question I asked on my survey was whether they would expect to receive a free guide
book from a photography exhibition. 70% said that they would expect the guide book to be free and 30% said that they
would expect to pay for it.
• What this says about my audience: This highlights to me that the audience would not
want to pay for a guide book and would rather receive it for free. Furthermore, this could possibly suggest that they are not
interested in a guide book.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to
this audience because I will make the guide book free and give it to everyone as they leave the exhibition. People who want
to pay for a guide book can make a donation to the exhibition that will keep the exhibition running annually. The guide book
is optional to take home so you do not have to take one if you don’t want to.
34. Interview 1
• What would interest you to visit a nature photography exhibition the most
and why?
A wide variety of award winning photographs as well as the photographer having
a question and answer session where I could find out their inspirations for the
pictures.
• What would influence you to purchase a nature calendar and why?
A reasonable price with good quality photos. The pictures to not look too boring
and similar to pictures you have seen before. They need to be unique and original.
A mixture of scenic views, wildlife and nature.
• What theme of photographs would you prefer to see on a portfolio: nature,
scenic views or wildlife and why?
I would prefer to see a nature portfolio because you can picture just the flowers
as well as the flower fields etc.
35. Interview 1
• Observation: The thing that would interest them the most would be the award
winning photographs as well as having a question and answer session so that you can find out
information about the photographs. The calendar needs to be reasonably priced and feature
unique different images.
• What this says about my audience: The interview results has
highlighted to me that the calendar will appeal more to an older audience. They want the
photography exhibition to have a variety of activities so that they are still interested. The exhibition
will show case photographs as well as providing workshops etc. The audience prefer to see a variety
of photographs of nature, wildlife and scenic views.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My
product will appeal to this audience because I am going to take the images myself and make sure
that they are different. I will do this by taking pictures of nature with scenic views in the
background. The theme of images will vary throughout the different products, for example the
portfolio will just be nature. My results from my survey also highlighted that the audience would
like to see a range of activities at the exhibition which means that my exhibition will appeal to a
younger audience and older audience; a range of ages can enjoy the experience.
36. Interview 2
• What would interest you to visit a nature photography exhibition the most and why?
Plaques at the side of the photographs explaining how the photo was taken
and where (information). Mainly wildlife pictures would interest me the most.
• What would influence you to purchase a nature calendar and why?
The pictures were high quality and had good scenic views. As a present to
give someone as long as it was a reasonable price, ( no more than £20).
• What theme of photographs would you prefer to see on a portfolio: nature, scenic
views or wildlife and why?
Wildlife because you can see interesting wildlife like foxes, badgers etc. You can also
write where they were taken etc.
37. Interview 2
• Observation: Once again, the results show me that the audience would enjoy
having plaques at the side of the photographs providing information. The pictures again
need to be high quality and unique. They would prefer to see wildlife pictures as this interests
them more.
• What this says about my audience: My calendar and
exhibition will appeal to this audience type because it would feature wildlife images. They are
mainly interested in wildlife photographs but would be open to other themes.
• How will your product appeal to this
audience: My calendar will appeal to this audience because it will feature lots of
wildlife photographs. My exhibition also will include lots of wildlife images. They will also
appeal to the audience because I want to include plaques including information about how
the pictures were taken and where. I also want to include information about photographers
that have inspired me, (this would be written on the portfolio).
38. Interview 3
• What would interest you to visit a nature photography exhibition the most and why?
The exhibition would have to have images of something that you wouldn't’t be likely to see
on an everyday basis, or it would have to be something unusual with the photography
technique. This is because you can see nature everyday, but to make it stand out especially
in an exhibition you need something different.
• What would influence you to purchase a nature calendar and why?
The images within the calendar. This is because I wouldn't buy a calendar whose
images I didn’t like. They're what you're going to be looking at for a year so they need
to be good.
• What theme of photographs would you prefer to see on a portfolio: nature,
scenic views or wildlife and why?
I would personally like to see wildlife as its not something that you do see everyday and it
would be fun to see something unusual and different to the rest.
39. Interview 3
• Observation: One observation from my interview is that they would like the images to
be unique and different because you see nature all around. This is a similar response as interview
1. The images have to be high quality and interesting. They would prefer to see wildlife on the
portfolio because you do not see animals such as foxes or deer on an everyday basis.
• What this says about my audience: My audience are more
interested in wildlife photographs than nature or scenic views. My audience will enjoy the
photography exhibition as this will feature lots of pictures of wildlife as well as providing
information about the photograph and location. The younger audience would rather see something
unique such as wildlife images, whereas an older audience would rather look at photographs that
are ascetically appealing such as landscape photographs and nature.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: It
will appeal to this audience as the photography exhibition will feature plenty of photographs of
wildlife. There will also be opportunities for the audience to ask the photographer questions about
the picture and wildlife. Finally, there will be workshops that will expand their knowledge. There is
a photography calendar that will be sold at the exhibition that will incorporate several images of
wildlife throughout. All photographs will be unique and different to keep my audience interested
and want to visit/ purchase the products.
