From the Penthouse of Manchester’s Hilton Hotel, Zoe Smith, the music industry’s newest music
phenomenon, tells all about her rise to global domination and who and what she had to give up
on her way.
These last few months have seemed like a whirlwind even to watch, how’s this sudden success
been for you?
Oh my god, I’ve loved every second of it! It’s hard to believe it was only last year i was sat on my
bedroom floor, videoing myself for YouTube covers. I
Have to keep reminding myself that this is all real, but I’ve worked for this and it’s something I’ve
always wanted and knew I’d one day achieved. There wasn’t another option for me.
Your rise to fame was almost instantaneous, you have millions of devoted fans, and how does it
feel to be such an icon?
It’s amazing!, i was finishing my tour in New York and i looked out my window on my last morning
and there was a sea of people just waiting, they sang my lyrics to my window and it was just
beautiful...i just thought, ‘this is insane!’ It’s all insane, I just create insanity and i love it! (Laughs)
Why am i a crazy bi**ch!?
When you were writing your first song for the album, did you know how far it would go?
The first song i write for the album, being my first album, i thought should be my first ever song
too...i took a song i wrote when i was 14 and worked on it, it was the usual teenage heartbreak,
about a boy i knew in school ha-ha it’s so ‘emot’!. So i suppose at fourteen i didn’t know where it
would go at all!
Simon Cowell has been heard mentioning you to join the panel for next seasons ‘X-Factor’ judges,
is that something you’re interested in?
No not at all, i don’t believe in other people deciding your fate. If you’re an artist, it’s not up to four
strangers at a desk to decide if your worthy of living out your dreams.
Rumour has it you’ve been linked to Arctic Monkeys front man, Alex Turner, what’s going on
there?
Me and Alex are just good friends we met at the ‘Brits’ recently, he’s really cool.
Do you have any more plans in the pipe line for tours and releases?
I’m currently writing again after visiting my mum after my tour. I helped me centre myself and
brought me back to my roots, so that’s an element I’ll be focusing on in my next projects.
Well all the best look with that! Lastly, if you could meet yourself, or someone now who aspires to
do what you have accomplished, what advice would you give?
I’d say, never give up, it’s difficult to be out there when literally everyone expects you to follow the
crowd, but if you don’t you won’t get noticed! Be brave!
