Ownership Structure
• Bauer media is a global institution and was founded in
1875 with the founder being Ludolph Bauer. The Bauer
media group is sister publishing to H Bauer publishing
and it is the biggest consumer publishing company in the
UK currently. Because of this, it connotes that Bauer
media is very well known and obtain a large income.

Operating Model
Brand Ideology/Ethos
• Buaer have a very popular and catchy slogan of ‘we think popular’ and this is ideal to
when making a slogan as it depicts how Buaer are referring to everyone and not just a
specific group. This is important as the Bauer company involves millions of people and
this has helped to increase the amount of consumers over the last few years. The fact
that the slogan includes ‘ we think’ could demonstrate how Buaer media take into
consideration what kind of consumers the want for their company.
• As for Q magazine their slogan is ‘The UK’s biggest music magazine’ and this helps to
connote how hey are want to be bold and permanent. This statement is quite
overpowering considering they mainly sell their magazines in the UK.
Technological Convergence
• The Bauer media company is in synergy with social media
websites such asYoutube, twitter and Instagram etc. They use
websites or abs such as Instagram in order to advertise what will
be in there next issue of the magazine such as artists, albums
and much more. This helps the Q magazine as they are able to
feature different content and advertise the information to
millions of people in seconds.
Associated Products
• Bauer media have a cacophony of different ways of reaching people and expressing
there advertisement. A few of these examples are radio,TV and mobile and by doing
this it allows Bauer media to have a effective way of reaching people.Via radio their
stations include KERRANG!, Kiss and Magic which is a wide spread of genres therefore
helping the consumers to obtain the information. On mobile the media is especially
effective due to the fact that everyone has a phone of some sort and they do this
through their magazines and radio companies.
Associated products continued
• Another genre of Bauer is that they do fashion and this is
specifically evident in Grazia’s magazine. But compared
to Q magazine, Grazia’s has a much larger female
percentage that view their magazines due to the fashion.
A big part of this realise on the magazines circulation and
Q magazines is monthly with Garzia’s being weekly.
Because of this it allows for more consumers aged
around15-25 to view its content.

Genre
GenreQ magazine is the ultimate guide to modern music. It includes and
covers the general business going on in the music world, this
include Hip Hop, Rock and many more. Furthermore the magazine
includes something called Q Bits and this is about what’s latest in
the music industry such as new tracks and new artists. On the
website however it covers a lot more content including The Q
awards which talks about new events like “the worlds greatest
music awards” which is supposed to be evident in October.
The Q awards also allows people to vote for there favorite
musicians and wait in anticipation for the winners. As I have
already mentioned the Q Magazine website features a range of
different music genres and because of this viewers are able to
catch up with the latest news with there favorite musicians
through the latest interviews and videos. But as well as
researching there musicians they are able to listen to there
favorite songs in the playlist section.
Front cover
The Masthead is in the left hand
third, it has a large white letter Q on
a red background. Because of its size
and where it is placed it is the first
thing you see and read as it is clearly
visible. Also underneath the letter Q
there is a slogan which describes the
purpose of the magazine.
Beneath the Mast head is
the strap line and they are in
capital letters with the
explanation of the cover
line. This use of red, gold,
white and black text implies
the house style.
The pull quote is quite informal
and the use of the word “tit”
makes the reader want to read
the magazine. As you can see it
is fairly large and black in order
to match the color scheme.
The flash is placed to the top
right of the magazine cover
and is slightly behind the
main image. The artists name
is in black and once again in
black and fairly large which
continues with the house
style.
The main image is a close up

with his band mates in the

band mates are a reflection
depicts that Liam is the main

Australian musician. The
readers can relate to this man as
they will be interested in the
different sectors of media he is

demonstrates how the reader is
able to subscribe which means
they are able to gat the latest

Date/issue number:
The date and issue number is
normally featured on this page
and this implies what
month/week the magazine was
made to be launched.
Title/logo: The title on
this page is quite small and not
as eye catching as the other
features on this page. However
it is in capitals, bold and clear
to the reader. It is placed in the
top of the page to make it look
formal and professional. The
logo is also featured on this
page this is to depict
consistency through out the
magazine.
Main image: The main
image of this page connotes
four band members named
The Courteeners and the
image is very large and
dominating as the editor wants
the reader to see the image
first.
DPS analysis
Heading and style of DPS
The heading is written in a
large white font which is
contained by a red box.
This follows the house
style of the rest of the
magazine, which is also
red and white. The banner
at the top of the page is
also red which is also
keeping with the house the
house style of the
magazine, as well as the
both the front cover and
the contents page.
Copy
The copy however of the article
is black text with a white
background. There is a drop
capital which draws the
attention of the reader, written
in red, and goes down 5 lines.
The article is spread over 7
columns, with the last 3 being
wider, and a bigger font than the
first.
Image
This article has two main images, one on each page.
The the first image is of Brandon flowers which is
clearly stated by the title, and he is holding a electric
guitar, while sitting in a dimly lit room. This helps to
reflect the “at home” style which he likes to create in
his style of his music.
The background
The background is a
solid, single colour and
this helps connote how
professional the
magazine is as well as
how simple it is.
Pull quote
Which is in bold red
capital letters and is a
specific quote from the
featured interview.
Technical code
the technical code
focuses on the
Brandon flowers and
it includes a medium
shot of the artist in the
recording studio This
connotes how hard
working the artist is
and how important
music is to him. He
has chosen to wear a
patterned shirt which
could imply that he is
a creative artist.
Form and Style
• The colours of my magazine are: reds, whites and black. This is a good style to
have as the red is a vibrant colour where as black and white will stand out
against my chosen background.
• The front cover will include a primary image of a band/singer in the center that
is popular at the time of publication.
• The Q logo is located at the top left hand corner painted in red in order to
stand out to the reader. The main title is probably the biggest text on the page
as the editor wants to the reader to se that part first
• The font styles tend to be the same through out the magazine but they can
change depending on what page they are on. An example of this is on the
contents page as the font for the title would have changed as the title doesn’t
need to stand out too much as the reader wants to know more about the
bands and singers in the magazine.
This front cover
exemplifies how Q
make good use of form
and style using bold
colours and easily
readable font sizes.
Website analysis
Form and style
Looking at this website
it is clear to see that
the form and the style
has been thought
about in order to
attract the attention
of consumers. An
example of this is
keeping the style very
plain and simple and
what this does is help
the consumer to see
and find the
information and facts
about their favorite
artists easily.
Social media synergy
As I have mentioned
the website has
different social media
apps that allow you to
follow and subscribe.
By doing this you are
able see the latest
content and stay
updated with any
new information.
Where the website
takes you
By visiting this website
you are able to see a
plethora of different
pages which are filled
with information facts
about your favorite
artists.
Primary images/ key featured artists
This website makes sure that the latest news
and information on the latest artisit have
the spot light and they do this by having
the images and information on the home
page so it is seen first.
Subscription services
Also the website allows you to
subscribe and follow on
different popular social media
accounts so that you keep
updated with the latest news
and trends.
Production Process
The production of a magazine:
1.Establish a date of which the magazine needs to be published by.
2.Create and manage some sort o schedule in order to keep track of what needs to be
done and when.
3.This next part is important as the editors must decide on how much money is going to
be spent on the production of the magazine.
4.Most importantly, the editors must now decide what content will be going into the
magazine and from that they will be able to conduct interviews in order to obtain the
knowledge.
5.After that the sub-editing group must then conduct a investigation in order to work out
if all the statistics and facts are correct in the content.
6.Anther important part is the page layout as it is all good having the content but it
means nothing to the consumer unless it looks professional and well managed on each
page.
7.Finally, for the construction of the magazines content it is proofread in order to mark out
any mistakes.
8.Then the magazine is printed
9.Then the magazines are distributed out to stores and newsstands to be sold to the
public.

Synergy
• The Q magazine has information and details on different
social media apps such as Instagram and twitter. The
magazine promotes this by allowing people to follow
them on their website. By doing this it means that the Q
magazine can spread its name and become more
favourable. Also the fact that the magazine has a wide
range of music helps to gain more followers.
Product Analysis/purpose
The strapline may be located at the top of the page and will most probably have
some part of it that is a different color in order to draw the attention of the reader
to it. By drawing the attention of the reader it makes the reader want to buy and
open the magazine in order to see what is in side of it.
The magazine doesn’t have a specific Genre and by doing this it means that
everyone is able to like the magazine as it includes a array of different genres of
the magazine. Its competitors can include NME and KERRANG as they specifically
focus on a specific genre which goes into more detail than Q magazine. What sub-
genre is the music magazine from? Who are it’s competitors? What codes &
conventions help establish it’s sub-genre to the audience.

Audience theories of Hartley, Katz
and Maslows
• Katz theory is about how everyone uses the media
differently and that they are able to make their own
choices and decisions. The consumers and readers of Q
magazine would end up being a variation of inform and
this would be because of the reviews and information
that would be located inside of the magazine. This will
help to intrigued the readers to read the latest interviews
and content in the magazine.
Demographics
Demographics
A This category is for higher management which includes
bankers, lawyers, doctors etc.
B This is middle management where there is teacher, creative
and media people.
C1 This is for office supervisors, junior management, nurses,
specialist clerical staff etc (white collar)
C2 Skilled manual workers, plumbers, builders-blue collar etc
D Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers
E Unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers etc
Demographics is statistical data of which relates to the population and all
the groups within in. So for example the Q magazines demographics include
68% male to 32% female, a median age of 29” and a 550,000 readership. For
my magazine the demographics would be around 50% for males and
females making the magazine more favourable for both sexes. As well as the
median age around 29” which is similar to the Q magazine.
Psychographics
Psychographics
Mainstreamers SECURITY. Tend to be conventional and sentimental-favour
value for money family brands.
Aspirers STATUS. Orientated and acquisitive to image and
appearance/fashion. Typically young people.
Succeeders CONTROL. Strong goal and work ethics as well as organisation.
Tend to be higher management.
Resigned SURVIVAL. Authoritarian and Rigid values. Interests in tradition
and the past
Explorers DISCOVERY. Energy, experience and individuality. Of which
values are different.
Strugglers ESCAPE. Alienated and disorganised. With only a few
resources beyond physical skill.
Reformers ENLIGHTENMENT. Freedom and personal growth. Also social
awareness and independent judgement.
This graph states that it is important to have specific audience when
creating a magazine. In this case as you can see above there are specific
types of people that may be interested in the magazine than otheres.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
What we want
What we need
The basic needs, need to
be for filled in order for
someone to want to buy
a magazine. Without
them it means that no
one is going to want to
by a magazine. How will
my magazine meet the
needs
Uses and gratifications theory
Blumler and Katz 1974
• “What people do with the media”
These are the main 6 reasons why people consume media:
1.)To be informed or educated
2.) Use the media in order to identify the characters and the situation
3.)To be entertained
4.)To enable themselves to socially interact with others
5.)To escape from their daily troubles
6.)The consumer is taking an active part in the communication process as well as their
goal is oriented in their media use.
The readers of Q magazine are able to obtain entertainment and are able to be informed
with information and content in order to escape reality and instead see what is going
on with other peoples lives. What the theory is trying to say is that the readers can see
what is happening in other parts of the world instead of having to worry for their own
problems.
• http://oldandnewmedia.blogspot.com/2012/10/katz -on-conceptualizing-media-
effects.html
Hartley’s classification
7 social categories
1.) Self-ambitions or interests of the audience
2.) Gender
3.) Age
4.) Class-different social classes e.g. working, upper
5.) Ethnicity
6.) Family
7.) Nation
The focus and control is on the producer not the consumer. Encoding a message for the
audience to respond to.
“ Institutions are obliged not only to speak about an audience, but – crucially, for them –
to talk to one as well; they need not only to represent audiences but to enter into relation
with them.” In other words they must know their audience in order to be able to target
them effectively.

narrative-genre
Primary Research
I have created a questionnaire on a word
documents and by doing this it allows me to see
what age range and what the popular music
genres are before making my magazine. By the
general public filling out this information it means
that I can see what the people have in common
and what is different. Furthermore, this gives me
an opportunity to estimate what I should look for
in a magazine and what I could include in my own
magazine.
Primary Research
After obtaining the information from my questionnaire that I
created it is clear to see that more men were interested in the
construction of my magazine rather than women and this is
exactly how I expected. With my Genre of my magazine being a
range but mostly Rock n’ Roll and Hip Hop.With this information I
will make sure that I include a lot of information on male artists in
order to sustain the observations of the male sex. A range of
people answered my questionnaire which is very helpful due to
the fact that I am able to create a magazine that will revolve
around the consumers.
Customer questionnaire
This is an image of my questionnaire of which
I got a casual worker to fill out in a shop
located in leatherhead. To go as evidence I
also got a picture of the worker filling my
questionnaire out, this allows me to connote
and obtain specific information in which I will
be able to collect the data and record my
results. From the observation of my results it is
clear to see that my consumers will want
specific content in the magazine and I am
more than happy to include it. I must state
that is was interesting seeing the results that I
collected and that the results were not
exactly how I expected. This then means
that I must adapt in order to please the
general public and have plenty consumers.
Question 1
For this first question, “what is your age”, 85% out of a
total 32 people answered between the age of 0-18
and this is exactly the result which I wanted as it
means that I can get an accurate representation of
what younger people want in a music magazine.
Question 2
This next question however was quite interesting as you can
see that I have a pretty equal amount of boys and girls who
answered my questionnaire. With this said a total of 53% of
people were female and a total of 46% of people were
male and this shows that female s have more of an interest
in music magazines. This would mean that I would have to
create my magazines relating more to females.
Question 3
For this question there was quite a range of answers with 6%
Retail, 9% office/admin, 3% management, 16% manual
working and 64% Unemployed. These results however left 0%
on both being a Professional and Banking. It also meant that
a large amount of people are unemployed and so this will
affect the price of my magazine as I understand that a lot of
people will not have a lot of money to spare
Question 4
After gathering the information for this question it is clear
to see that that the majority of the people that
answered my questionnaire were either unemployed or
earning under £10,000 for their job. With this in mind it
means that in the construction of my magazine that I
would need to include information that relates to people
who are unemployed and the mass majority of these
people would be students.
Question 5
for the 5th
question the answers were surprising
and this is due to the range of answers. Despite
the range the option that the public liked the
most was POP with 10 out of 31 people liking it.
Because of this it is important to have a large
amount of POP music included in the
magazine so that I am able to attract as many
people as possible so that I can make a profit.
Question 6
Even though clearly the mass majority of people as
answered here will never buy a music magazine it is still
important to include information that will attract the
younger generations as the content would be read by the
ones who would decide to buy a music magazine. For the
people that would buy the magazine I would create the
magazine and have it be produced monthly as that would
satisfy both of the largest groups
Question 7
Unsurprisingly, the majority of people would prefer
to by a magazine as a price that is the least and in
this case that price is £1-£2. What did stand out was
the fact that a few people chose each option,
meaning that they feel that by upping the price
would mean that the quality of the content and
magazine would also by a lot higher.
Question 8
As for what content the public would want in a music
magazine it is clear to see that most people would like to
see interviews over everything else in the magazine and
this may be because the public would want to know
what the artists think over everything else. But however in
order to keep the maagzine interesting I will also need to
include a lot of pictures and images so that not only can
the consumer read about the content but they can see
it as well.
Question 9
As you can see from the graph the most common format
of a magazine that is preferred is a hard copy and this
means for me that I will need to focus on making card
copies of my magazines over digital and downloaded
copies. This also connotes that the public prefer to go out
and buy a music magazine meaning I can spend more
time focusing on hard copies compared to digital of
download.
Question 10
Finally, continuing on from the last question it is clear to see
that the public would prefer to purchase their copy at a
store. This is surprising to me considering that the younger
generation, of which the magazine is aimed at, are
spending more time on social media instead of going
outside in order to purchase items and clothing etc.
Secondary Research
• https://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews9590.html
• After looking at the reviews of the Q magazine and after seeing it only
got a 3.5 star review it is clear to say that the magazines popularity has
decreased over the years which could be due to the fact of more
competitors. Furthermore this also connotes that Bauer is also less
favourable meaning their company needs to work harder in order to
encourage more people to buy the Q magazine.
• Continuing with Bauer media I have found a review which states the
pros and cons of working for the company. For example an advantage
would be hardworking and this would be due to the work load that is
set on your shoulders. A disadvantage would be that the pay is lower
than average and this would be a problem for a lot of people as they
would want to work as hard as possible and therefore earn as much as
possible.

Product Advertising & Marketing
• There are many different ways in which the music magazine is advertised and some of these ways
include social media, boards and adverts. Expanding on social media the music magazine
advertises by have accounts on popular sources of social media and they advertise by asking you
whether you would like to either subscribe of follow. By doing this it allows for the company to
send content and information to do with the company so that you can stay updated.
• But as well as advertisement the company of the magazine are able to promote their magazine
through platforms such as a broadcast due to the amount of people listening at one time. This
helps the company to expand their range of content into places where they might not have many
quarters located. This is done by above the line marketing helping the company to have a better
contact with the audience so that the content can be promoted.
• Some companies depending on how big it is decide to use Guerilla marketing and this is a form of
advertisement that is used on a minimal budget in order to give the message across to the public.
An example of this is the Kit Kat bench where one half is built with gaps and the other is smooth
and not gaps which acts as the rapper.
Above the line
Above the line is mass marketing that is not targeted at a
specific audience and it seeks to build the brand and inform
everyone about the product. The point of this is to obtain
conversions and an advantage of doing this is it opens up a
wider reach so that the brand can get better contact with
the audience which defines the brand. A disadvantage is
that in order to do this is cost a lot of money due to the fact
that the advert for example has to be broadcasted around
the world.
Above the line examples
• TV adverts, Radio, Print - which has a wider
reach, Coca Cola advert at Christmas.
Below the line
• This marketing focuses on a specific audience which is
memorable to them and direct. Furthermore, un-like Above
the line, below the line focuses more on conversions and can
be seen as in store marketing which could be the point of sale
with the highest level of conversion. Some advantages are that
there are better conversions as they are targeted, easy to
control and tailor made. Some disadvantages are that it only
focuses on a specific audience and so the product is not made
for everyone as well as the fact that it may not raise awareness
outwith the target group.
Below the line examples
• Sponsored such as football matches, in store marketing
such as a meal deal and direct mail marketing. This is
minimal marketing in order to get a message across at
public or local places.
Guerrilla marketing
• When a company spend minimal amounts of money to
advertises themselves in a unconventional manner. This
would include having public attention in a memorable or
high energy promotion.
Viral marketing
A method of marketing whereby consumers are encouraged to share
information about a company's goods and services are preferred by the
internet.
Messenger-message-environment
Advantages
Faster growth
Mainstream media exposure
Cost effective
Rapid generation of leads
Disadvantage
Can become a nuisance
End up being spam
Very hard to measure
magazine Marketing
• In order to rent a billboard you must pay about £200 per week for as long as the bill
board is up.
• This video of behind the scenes of Q is used in order to attract the attention of the
viewers in order to entice them in and see what goes into behind the scenes of the Q
magazine. By doing this it allows the Q magazine to obtain popularity so that more
people would want to buy the magazine.

Distribution
• A magazine like Q is available in over 230 countries and is available online and this
means that the company is able to widen how big their audience is as it is easier to put
advertisement onto the internet instead of put it in public. With that said audiences on
the internet would then be able be able to subscribe and have a copy of the magazine
sent to their do door with out even needing to have to go out of their home. This could
also mean that the copy that is sent to your door may be delivered before the hard
copy is even in stores or on the market.

Relationship between magazine
and audience
• In order for a magazine company to leave an in print on a
consumer so that they come back for more content a
magazine company has to have some sort of subscription
that the consumers can subscribe to or follow in order to
keep updated with the latest content.
• While being able to subscribe the magazine company also
has to have content and images that are associated with
a specific genre of people. For example if a magazine are
trying to catch the attention of teenagers they might
include content and interviews associated with new
upcoming artists that they might like to listen to.

  • 15. Genre
  • 16. GenreQ magazine is the ultimate guide to modern music. It includes and covers the general business going on in the music world, this include Hip Hop, Rock and many more. Furthermore the magazine includes something called Q Bits and this is about what’s latest in the music industry such as new tracks and new artists. On the website however it covers a lot more content including The Q awards which talks about new events like “the worlds greatest music awards” which is supposed to be evident in October. The Q awards also allows people to vote for there favorite musicians and wait in anticipation for the winners. As I have already mentioned the Q Magazine website features a range of different music genres and because of this viewers are able to catch up with the latest news with there favorite musicians through the latest interviews and videos. But as well as researching there musicians they are able to listen to there favorite songs in the playlist section.
  • 17. Front cover The Masthead is in the left hand third, it has a large white letter Q on a red background. Because of its size and where it is placed it is the first thing you see and read as it is clearly visible. Also underneath the letter Q there is a slogan which describes the purpose of the magazine. Beneath the Mast head is the strap line and they are in capital letters with the explanation of the cover line. This use of red, gold, white and black text implies the house style. The pull quote is quite informal and the use of the word “tit” makes the reader want to read the magazine. As you can see it is fairly large and black in order to match the color scheme. The flash is placed to the top right of the magazine cover and is slightly behind the main image. The artists name is in black and once again in black and fairly large which continues with the house style. The main image is a close up of the artist Liam Gallagher with his band mates in the reflection. The fact that the band mates are a reflection depicts that Liam is the main focus The bar code is in the bottom left hand corner as it is the last thing you see, therefor the least important as it contains the price as they have aimed to convince you to but the magazine
  • 18. Content - Contents Page analysis Page number features: The page number and titles are all down the left hand side of the page. Each title has a brief description of what is on that page. Image at the bottom: The smaller image at the bottom of the page is of Nick cage who is a very famous Australian musician. The readers can relate to this man as they will be interested in the different sectors of media he is in. “Every month”: This section of the contents page connotes what is always featured in the magazine. It demonstrates how the reader is able to subscribe which means they are able to gat the latest edition delivered to their door. Date/issue number: The date and issue number is normally featured on this page and this implies what month/week the magazine was made to be launched. Title/logo: The title on this page is quite small and not as eye catching as the other features on this page. However it is in capitals, bold and clear to the reader. It is placed in the top of the page to make it look formal and professional. The logo is also featured on this page this is to depict consistency through out the magazine. Main image: The main image of this page connotes four band members named The Courteeners and the image is very large and dominating as the editor wants the reader to see the image first.
  • 19. DPS analysis Heading and style of DPS The heading is written in a large white font which is contained by a red box. This follows the house style of the rest of the magazine, which is also red and white. The banner at the top of the page is also red which is also keeping with the house the house style of the magazine, as well as the both the front cover and the contents page. Copy The copy however of the article is black text with a white background. There is a drop capital which draws the attention of the reader, written in red, and goes down 5 lines. The article is spread over 7 columns, with the last 3 being wider, and a bigger font than the first. Image This article has two main images, one on each page. The the first image is of Brandon flowers which is clearly stated by the title, and he is holding a electric guitar, while sitting in a dimly lit room. This helps to reflect the “at home” style which he likes to create in his style of his music. The background The background is a solid, single colour and this helps connote how professional the magazine is as well as how simple it is. Pull quote Which is in bold red capital letters and is a specific quote from the featured interview. Technical code the technical code focuses on the Brandon flowers and it includes a medium shot of the artist in the recording studio This connotes how hard working the artist is and how important music is to him. He has chosen to wear a patterned shirt which could imply that he is a creative artist.
  • 20. Form and Style • The colours of my magazine are: reds, whites and black. This is a good style to have as the red is a vibrant colour where as black and white will stand out against my chosen background. • The front cover will include a primary image of a band/singer in the center that is popular at the time of publication. • The Q logo is located at the top left hand corner painted in red in order to stand out to the reader. The main title is probably the biggest text on the page as the editor wants to the reader to se that part first • The font styles tend to be the same through out the magazine but they can change depending on what page they are on. An example of this is on the contents page as the font for the title would have changed as the title doesn’t need to stand out too much as the reader wants to know more about the bands and singers in the magazine. This front cover exemplifies how Q make good use of form and style using bold colours and easily readable font sizes.
  • 21. Website analysis Form and style Looking at this website it is clear to see that the form and the style has been thought about in order to attract the attention of consumers. An example of this is keeping the style very plain and simple and what this does is help the consumer to see and find the information and facts about their favorite artists easily. Social media synergy As I have mentioned the website has different social media apps that allow you to follow and subscribe. By doing this you are able see the latest content and stay updated with any new information. Where the website takes you By visiting this website you are able to see a plethora of different pages which are filled with information facts about your favorite artists. Primary images/ key featured artists This website makes sure that the latest news and information on the latest artisit have the spot light and they do this by having the images and information on the home page so it is seen first. Subscription services Also the website allows you to subscribe and follow on different popular social media accounts so that you keep updated with the latest news and trends.
  • 22. Production Process The production of a magazine: 1.Establish a date of which the magazine needs to be published by. 2.Create and manage some sort o schedule in order to keep track of what needs to be done and when. 3.This next part is important as the editors must decide on how much money is going to be spent on the production of the magazine. 4.Most importantly, the editors must now decide what content will be going into the magazine and from that they will be able to conduct interviews in order to obtain the knowledge. 5.After that the sub-editing group must then conduct a investigation in order to work out if all the statistics and facts are correct in the content. 6.Anther important part is the page layout as it is all good having the content but it means nothing to the consumer unless it looks professional and well managed on each page. 7.Finally, for the construction of the magazines content it is proofread in order to mark out any mistakes. 8.Then the magazine is printed 9.Then the magazines are distributed out to stores and newsstands to be sold to the public. https://hosbeg.com/the-magazine-production-process/

  • 25. Synergy • The Q magazine has information and details on different social media apps such as Instagram and twitter. The magazine promotes this by allowing people to follow them on their website. By doing this it means that the Q magazine can spread its name and become more favourable. Also the fact that the magazine has a wide range of music helps to gain more followers.
  • 26. Product Analysis/purpose The strapline may be located at the top of the page and will most probably have some part of it that is a different color in order to draw the attention of the reader to it. By drawing the attention of the reader it makes the reader want to buy and open the magazine in order to see what is in side of it. The magazine doesn’t have a specific Genre and by doing this it means that everyone is able to like the magazine as it includes a array of different genres of the magazine. Its competitors can include NME and KERRANG as they specifically focus on a specific genre which goes into more detail than Q magazine. What sub- genre is the music magazine from? Who are it’s competitors? What codes & conventions help establish it’s sub-genre to the audience.

  • 28. Audience theories of Hartley, Katz and Maslows • Katz theory is about how everyone uses the media differently and that they are able to make their own choices and decisions. The consumers and readers of Q magazine would end up being a variation of inform and this would be because of the reviews and information that would be located inside of the magazine. This will help to intrigued the readers to read the latest interviews and content in the magazine.

So for example the Q magazines demographics include 68% male to 32% female, a median age of 29” and a 550,000 readership. For my magazine the demographics would be around 50% for males and females making the magazine more favourable for both sexes. As well as the median age around 29” which is similar to the Q magazine.

  • 31. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs What we want What we need The basic needs, need to be for filled in order for someone to want to buy a magazine. Without them it means that no one is going to want to by a magazine. How will my magazine meet the needs
  • 32. Uses and gratifications theory Blumler and Katz 1974 • “What people do with the media” These are the main 6 reasons why people consume media: 1.)To be informed or educated 2.) Use the media in order to identify the characters and the situation 3.)To be entertained 4.)To enable themselves to socially interact with others 5.)To escape from their daily troubles 6.)The consumer is taking an active part in the communication process as well as their goal is oriented in their media use. The readers of Q magazine are able to obtain entertainment and are able to be informed with information and content in order to escape reality and instead see what is going on with other peoples lives. What the theory is trying to say is that the readers can see what is happening in other parts of the world instead of having to worry for their own problems. • http://oldandnewmedia.blogspot.com/2012/10/katz -on-conceptualizing-media- effects.html
  • 33. Hartley’s classification 7 social categories 1.) Self-ambitions or interests of the audience 2.) Gender 3.) Age 4.) Class-different social classes e.g. working, upper 5.) Ethnicity 6.) Family 7.) Nation The focus and control is on the producer not the consumer. Encoding a message for the audience to respond to. “ Institutions are obliged not only to speak about an audience, but – crucially, for them – to talk to one as well; they need not only to represent audiences but to enter into relation with them.” In other words they must know their audience in order to be able to target them effectively. https://www.slideshare.net/MissMoore866/media-theory-audience-representation- narrative-genre
  • 34. Primary Research I have created a questionnaire on a word documents and by doing this it allows me to see what age range and what the popular music genres are before making my magazine. By the general public filling out this information it means that I can see what the people have in common and what is different. Furthermore, this gives me an opportunity to estimate what I should look for in a magazine and what I could include in my own magazine.
  • 35. Primary Research After obtaining the information from my questionnaire that I created it is clear to see that more men were interested in the construction of my magazine rather than women and this is exactly how I expected. With my Genre of my magazine being a range but mostly Rock n’ Roll and Hip Hop.With this information I will make sure that I include a lot of information on male artists in order to sustain the observations of the male sex. A range of people answered my questionnaire which is very helpful due to the fact that I am able to create a magazine that will revolve around the consumers.
  • 36. Customer questionnaire This is an image of my questionnaire of which I got a casual worker to fill out in a shop located in leatherhead. To go as evidence I also got a picture of the worker filling my questionnaire out, this allows me to connote and obtain specific information in which I will be able to collect the data and record my results. From the observation of my results it is clear to see that my consumers will want specific content in the magazine and I am more than happy to include it. I must state that is was interesting seeing the results that I collected and that the results were not exactly how I expected. This then means that I must adapt in order to please the general public and have plenty consumers.
  • 37. Question 1 For this first question, “what is your age”, 85% out of a total 32 people answered between the age of 0-18 and this is exactly the result which I wanted as it means that I can get an accurate representation of what younger people want in a music magazine.
  • 38. Question 2 This next question however was quite interesting as you can see that I have a pretty equal amount of boys and girls who answered my questionnaire. With this said a total of 53% of people were female and a total of 46% of people were male and this shows that female s have more of an interest in music magazines. This would mean that I would have to create my magazines relating more to females.
  • 39. Question 3 For this question there was quite a range of answers with 6% Retail, 9% office/admin, 3% management, 16% manual working and 64% Unemployed. These results however left 0% on both being a Professional and Banking. It also meant that a large amount of people are unemployed and so this will affect the price of my magazine as I understand that a lot of people will not have a lot of money to spare
  • 40. Question 4 After gathering the information for this question it is clear to see that that the majority of the people that answered my questionnaire were either unemployed or earning under £10,000 for their job. With this in mind it means that in the construction of my magazine that I would need to include information that relates to people who are unemployed and the mass majority of these people would be students.
  • 41. Question 5 for the 5th question the answers were surprising and this is due to the range of answers. Despite the range the option that the public liked the most was POP with 10 out of 31 people liking it. Because of this it is important to have a large amount of POP music included in the magazine so that I am able to attract as many people as possible so that I can make a profit.
  • 42. Question 6 Even though clearly the mass majority of people as answered here will never buy a music magazine it is still important to include information that will attract the younger generations as the content would be read by the ones who would decide to buy a music magazine. For the people that would buy the magazine I would create the magazine and have it be produced monthly as that would satisfy both of the largest groups
  • 43. Question 7 Unsurprisingly, the majority of people would prefer to by a magazine as a price that is the least and in this case that price is £1-£2. What did stand out was the fact that a few people chose each option, meaning that they feel that by upping the price would mean that the quality of the content and magazine would also by a lot higher.
  • 44. Question 8 As for what content the public would want in a music magazine it is clear to see that most people would like to see interviews over everything else in the magazine and this may be because the public would want to know what the artists think over everything else. But however in order to keep the maagzine interesting I will also need to include a lot of pictures and images so that not only can the consumer read about the content but they can see it as well.
  • 45. Question 9 As you can see from the graph the most common format of a magazine that is preferred is a hard copy and this means for me that I will need to focus on making card copies of my magazines over digital and downloaded copies. This also connotes that the public prefer to go out and buy a music magazine meaning I can spend more time focusing on hard copies compared to digital of download.
  • 46. Question 10 Finally, continuing on from the last question it is clear to see that the public would prefer to purchase their copy at a store. This is surprising to me considering that the younger generation, of which the magazine is aimed at, are spending more time on social media instead of going outside in order to purchase items and clothing etc.
  • 47. Secondary Research • https://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews9590.html • After looking at the reviews of the Q magazine and after seeing it only got a 3.5 star review it is clear to say that the magazines popularity has decreased over the years which could be due to the fact of more competitors. Furthermore this also connotes that Bauer is also less favourable meaning their company needs to work harder in order to encourage more people to buy the Q magazine. • Continuing with Bauer media I have found a review which states the pros and cons of working for the company. For example an advantage would be hardworking and this would be due to the work load that is set on your shoulders. A disadvantage would be that the pay is lower than average and this would be a problem for a lot of people as they would want to work as hard as possible and therefore earn as much as possible.

  • 50. Product Advertising & Marketing • There are many different ways in which the music magazine is advertised and some of these ways include social media, boards and adverts. Expanding on social media the music magazine advertises by have accounts on popular sources of social media and they advertise by asking you whether you would like to either subscribe of follow. By doing this it allows for the company to send content and information to do with the company so that you can stay updated. • But as well as advertisement the company of the magazine are able to promote their magazine through platforms such as a broadcast due to the amount of people listening at one time. This helps the company to expand their range of content into places where they might not have many quarters located. This is done by above the line marketing helping the company to have a better contact with the audience so that the content can be promoted. • Some companies depending on how big it is decide to use Guerilla marketing and this is a form of advertisement that is used on a minimal budget in order to give the message across to the public. An example of this is the Kit Kat bench where one half is built with gaps and the other is smooth and not gaps which acts as the rapper.
  • 51. Above the line Above the line is mass marketing that is not targeted at a specific audience and it seeks to build the brand and inform everyone about the product. The point of this is to obtain conversions and an advantage of doing this is it opens up a wider reach so that the brand can get better contact with the audience which defines the brand. A disadvantage is that in order to do this is cost a lot of money due to the fact that the advert for example has to be broadcasted around the world.
  • 52. Above the line examples • TV adverts, Radio, Print - which has a wider reach, Coca Cola advert at Christmas.
  • 53. Below the line • This marketing focuses on a specific audience which is memorable to them and direct. Furthermore, un-like Above the line, below the line focuses more on conversions and can be seen as in store marketing which could be the point of sale with the highest level of conversion. Some advantages are that there are better conversions as they are targeted, easy to control and tailor made. Some disadvantages are that it only focuses on a specific audience and so the product is not made for everyone as well as the fact that it may not raise awareness outwith the target group.
  • 54. Below the line examples • Sponsored such as football matches, in store marketing such as a meal deal and direct mail marketing. This is minimal marketing in order to get a message across at public or local places.
  • 55. Guerrilla marketing • When a company spend minimal amounts of money to advertises themselves in a unconventional manner. This would include having public attention in a memorable or high energy promotion.

  • 57. magazine Marketing • In order to rent a billboard you must pay about £200 per week for as long as the bill board is up. • This video of behind the scenes of Q is used in order to attract the attention of the viewers in order to entice them in and see what goes into behind the scenes of the Q magazine. By doing this it allows the Q magazine to obtain popularity so that more people would want to buy the magazine. • https://www.marketingdonut.co.uk/media-advertising/billboards-and-outdoor- advertising/outdoor-advertising-making-a-big-impact • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TflU7NNZ5wU
  • 58. Distribution • A magazine like Q is available in over 230 countries and is available online and this means that the company is able to widen how big their audience is as it is easier to put advertisement onto the internet instead of put it in public. With that said audiences on the internet would then be able be able to subscribe and have a copy of the magazine sent to their do door with out even needing to have to go out of their home. This could also mean that the copy that is sent to your door may be delivered before the hard copy is even in stores or on the market. Time Price Annually £35.00 6 months £17.50 One of (year) £41.00 Hardcopy Time Price Annually £26.00 6 months £13.00 One of (year) £26.00 Digital Time price Annually £40.00 6 months £26.00 One of (year) £46.00 Hardcopy and digital
  • 59. Relationship between magazine and audience • In order for a magazine company to leave an in print on a consumer so that they come back for more content a magazine company has to have some sort of subscription that the consumers can subscribe to or follow in order to keep updated with the latest content. • While being able to subscribe the magazine company also has to have content and images that are associated with a specific genre of people. For example if a magazine are trying to catch the attention of teenagers they might include content and interviews associated with new upcoming artists that they might like to listen to.
