The Crime/Thriller Genre
What is the Crime Thriller genre?
 A Crime Thriller film is a sub-genre that
incorporates the suspenseful aspects of a thriller
with a crime plot. The sub-genre’s plot usually
centers on a serial killer, murderer, robbery, or
manhunt. As compared to traditional crime films,
the storyline focuses around the criminal and the
protagonist. Crime Thrillers use both action and
psychological aspects to build tension and
suspense.
What is the Crime Thriller genre?
 The genre is a hybrid type, meaning the mix of both
genres together. Crime Thrillers emphasize action
over the more common psychological themes in a
general crime film.
Conventions of a
Crime/Thriller
 Fast pace, quick movements
and fast camera work
 There is always a protagonist
and a antagonist
 A investigation, or sub plot is
clearly shown
 Action scenes (fights, chases
etc)
 High-Intensity
 Enigma
 Fast pace – Through the
camerawork, trickery of the
antagonist, cleverness of the
protagonist etc.
 Tension – When something is
going to happen, or the music
slows, or the characters
emotions change
dramatically.
 Antagonist & Protagonist -
The protagonist is the one
after the antagonist (the
victim)
 Enigma - (Difficult to
understand a certain person
or plot until the end/more
information is given)
 Suspension – A moment or
period is usually included that
makes the audience wonder
what will happen next.
A Walk Among the Tombstones
Why is this a Crime Thriller?
 Many of the conventions listed on the previous pages
are shown, including the Protagonist and the
Antagonist/s.
 Crime is shown through the use of a detective, drugs
plot, death, mystery and kidnapping. The thriller aspect
is shown through the use of “jumpy scenes”, action,
shootouts, fighting and violence.
 Each crime/event clearly leads onto another, and this is
the basis for many Crime Thriller films.
 With the help of fast cutting the scenes, the film trailer
is fast paced and full of mystery (two key conventions).
Brief Overall Analysis
 The trailer contains a brief overall plot from the
film, but does not give away any identities,
locations, or characters that are involved with the
crime.
 It also fast cuts between scenes leaving the trailer
tense building a enigma throughout the trailer.
 The crime genre is shown from the detective/police
perspective, and with the plot of a
murder/kidnapping. The thriller genre is shown
through the use of tense action scenes, with
mystery and drama.
