A private label is a brand that retailers and
wholesalers develop
In Britain, the largest food chains, roughly
half of what Sainsbury and Tesco sell is a
store-label goods.
Big Bazar and Reliance Mart sell privately
labeled products in India
-They are prominently displayed by the
retailers
- High Profit Margins
- Kept well Stocked
- Reduced physical product differentiation
- Generics are unbranded, inexpensive
versions of common products
- They can be of lower quality
Experts believe that 50% is the volume limit
that private labels could carry due to
following reasons:
-Consumers Prefer certain national brands
- Many product categories are not feasible or
attractive on a private-level basis
- They need to distinguish themselves from
generics
- Due to coming up of duplicate products, stream
of brand extension has blurred and has lead to
confusing amount of product proliferation
