Chaucer s Candide And Shakespeare s Macbeth
Many famous literary works were written as a way to give commentary on the society in which the
author lived such as Voltaire s Candide and Shakespeare s Macbeth. Geoffrey Chaucer, famous for his
The Canterbury Tales, and considered instrumental in the creation of English literature, is not as well
known for social commentary in his writing. However, The Canterbury Tales do indeed possess
insight and analysis of society, namely the role of the authority figures in the Church. Chaucer was
critical of the abuses and misuses he saw in the authority within the Church. He demonstrated his
awareness of and concern over the problematic behaviors of those in authority in the Church through
his writings seen in The Canterbury Tales. Through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If one considers that Chaucer was also able to survive two regime changes, one would realize the
immense diplomatic skill that Chaucer must have possessed. Typically, regime changes lead to
massive upheaval in all positions of administration. Yet, Chaucer maintained his position as a royal
diplomat regardless of the ruler. (Ackroyd 68). This alone gives testament to his indispensable worth
to the British kingdom, which was, at that time in history, an institution second only to the Catholic
Church. Thus, because of the power held by the Catholic Church, Chaucer would have likely had
many encounters with the Church in its people and leaders. An apt symbol for the Catholic culture of
fourteenth century London might be found in the fact that there were ninety nine churches, and ninety
five inns, within the walls (Ackroyd 8). Common street talk included such passing phrases like, God
save you, God give you grace, and God s speed (Ackroyd 7). The Church s reach stretched into the
day to day life of all around Europe, regardless of class. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that
Chaucer s poetry would focus so much on religion and the practices of religion. And, because Chaucer
participated devoutly in the religious practices, it makes sense that he would have felt an urgent desire
to effect change in the faulty and corrupt practices of Church officials. Thus, Chaucer s The
Canterbury Tales serve as a first hand analysis of the

Introduction
Cell fractionation is a very important procedure in cell biology and can be very useful for studying
different organelles. By fractionating, we mean separating or dividing the cell into different
component parts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A fraction that has high content of the specific organelle and low contamination by other organelles is
desired however a fraction with highly purified mitochondria is better even if the most mitochondria is
found in other fractions. The purity of mitochondrial fractions is usually determined by enzyme
marker detection assay(Hajek et al 2004). In our experiment we will use differential centrifugation to
isolate the mitochondria of cauliflower and then assay SDH activity using a fixed time assay. We will
then measure protein content in our fractions and calculate specific activity and total activity of our
fractions.
Materials and Methods
Mitochondrial Isolating
We used to florets from the cauliflower and disrupted the cell walls using a cold isolation buffer (0.3
M D mannitol, 0.02 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.2) and an abrasive, we then strained the homogenate
with cheesecloth into a centrifuge tube suppoerted by ice. The homogenate was then centrifuged at
600 g for 10 minutes at 4⁰C. The postnuclear supernatant was removed and centrifuged at 12,000 g for
30 minutes at 4⁰C. The post mitochondrial supernatant was removed and the mitochondrial pellet was
resuspended in a cold assay buffer (0.3 M D mannitol, 0.01 M KCl, 0.005 M MgCl₂, 0.02 M

Boston Massacre Happened
What Really Happened at the Boston Massacre It was a cool night in Boston in early march. I was
passing by the customs house while a group of boys began to yell and hollering at some British
soldiers. As the boys continued the soldiers began to fluster, so much to the point that he strikes one of
the boys with his rifle. And as soon as I can blink, I was in the middle of a crowd surrounding the
soldier. As the crowd grew, more soldiers came to his side. The crowd started to get out of control so
one of the soldiers picked up his musket and fired into the crowd and so his allies followed suit with
one of the musket shots nearly missing me. All of the citizens run in all directions and the crowd
nearly trampling children. I returned home and later discovered that the soldiers were placed under
house arrest and soon after taken to jail and charged for the death of several people. As things heated
up in court, more and more British soldiers arrived in Boston. They did this to bring peace to Boston
but it did not do that it all. It did the exact opposite and caused even more chaos. And as chaos spread

I picked who I thought was the most consistent or who s stories were the most similar to each other s.
I focused on the locations they mentioned, specifically around the town house and King street because
they seem to have the most eyewitness backing. They I focused on a few different little details. Like
the number of soldiers that witnesses say shot somebody. Then I focused on what was said. Witnesses
say that they heard a soldier with their back to them say Fire . For the people I didn t believe. I just felt
that some of their key points were just too far off the facts that were trending between some of the
other people. I know that there is several people that I do not have on wither list and that s because I
felt that I didn t have enough information to definitely say who goes on

Examples Of Hero Cycle Of Harry Potter
The Hero Cycle of Harry Potter
What is a hero s cycle? The hero s cycle is a quest pattern that all heroes (someone who embarks on a
quest) follow. The hero s cycle is found in almost all myths, legends and novels. A great example of
the hero s cycle could be seen in the novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone. The main character,
Harry Potter, goes through three important stages of the cycle, the departure, initiation, and the return
stage. Theses stages have subdivisions which not only contributes to the growth of the hero, but also
lays out what a hero goes through in order to achieve his/her quest.
Joseph Campbell, the founder of the hero s journey precisely lays out each stage and subdivision on
what the hero goes through. The hero first starts in the ordinary world where he is used to everything.
Harry who lives in the cubby under the stairs, is used to being bullied by his uncle, aunt and his
cousin. Harry s journey begins when he gets a mail. This mail is important because Harry has never
received a letter before due to the fact that he has no family. As he is opening the envelope Dudley,
Harry s cousin, sanches the mail from Harry and gives it to his father, Vernon.
Vernon refuses Harry s call to adventure by ripping, burning, and shredding the mail Harry receives.
Joseph Campbell s Hero With A Thousand Faces, as summarized by Christopher Vogler, states, A Hero
often refuses [or is reluctant] to take on the Journey because of fears and insecurities that have

Animal Cell Structure
Animal cells are a type of eukaryotic cell with a nucleus, membrane bound organelles, with no cell
wall. Here is a summary of their structure and function.
Prokaryotes are the primitive, simple cells of bacteria and their bacteria like Archaea. Eukaryotes,
which include the most advanced cells of animals, plants, fungi, protozoan, algae, and slime water
molds.
Eukaryotic cells share many similar characteristics, including some of the following structures, which
can be found in the cells of animals. Glycocalyx: Some animal and protozoan cells have this outer
layer anchored to the plasma membrane. Gycocalyces help animal cells stick to each other and protect
cells from dehydration. This layer is not present in eukaryotic cells that have ... Show more content on

Peroxisomes are required by any cell that uses respiration (oxygen to extract energy from food).
Golgi body: In addition to making lysosomes, this organelle coordinates the packaging and shipment
of materials out of the cell. Mitochondria: These double membrane bound organelles are like tiny
powerhouses of the cell, producing a nucleotide coenzyme that transports energy for use within the
cell.
Cytoplasm: The inside of the cell, between the nucleus and plasma membrane, is filled with a gel like
fluid in which the organelles are suspended. The liquid portion of cytoplasm is called cytosol.
Cytoskeleton: This network of fibers and tubules is present throughout the interior of the cell,
providing support, anchoring organelles, helping with intracellular transport and cell division.
Centrioles and centrosomes: Only present in animal cells and some fungal cells, a pair of centrioles is
located near the nucleus, in a region called the centrosome. These organelles are composed of
microtubules, help build flagella and cilia and form mitotic spindles during cell division. An animal

Comparing The Oxford Companion To Sugar And Sweets
Editor of the book The Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets , Darra Goldstein state that the Crème
Brulee is a popular dessert come from French by chef Francois Massialot in 1691, and travel to United
State with an English name Burnt cream around 1970 . Crème Brulee is also my favorite dessert, not
only because it tastes good but also of the fun during the process when I bake it. I remember the first
time I tastes it is when I went to the buffet with my family. Then I get in love with it, and I tried to
find it at other stores beside of that buffet. Unluckily, I could not find it at any dessert store, so I have

This is also the part I will show you how to burn the sugar to form the crispy caramel on top of it. We
remove the Crème Brulee from the refrigerator about twenty minutes before we start to caramelize the
top. Notice that when you see any moisture condensation has formed on the Crème Brulee tops, gently
dab it away with a paper towel, but you have to be careful not to dent the custard. Now we are got the
crème part down, it is time for the Brulee , which means burnt in French. We will be using a butane
culinary torch for that, but not have to. You could also use a small oven which is common kitchen tool
for every home s kitchen, but using a torch are better for it. With the torch, you first have to
familiarize yourself with how your particular model works and be sure to follow the safety
instructions, because we re playing with real fire. Secondly, we will sprinkle the tops of the Crème
Brulees with granulated white sugar. You have to make sure you cover all the surface, and swirl the
ramekins to distribute the sugar evenly. The fun starts at this time, which is fire up all the sugar.
Different torch works differently, so follow the instructions for lighting yours, and adjust the length of
the flame to medium. My suggestion with this part is to star up the torch with the medium fire because
it will help you to easier control how the sugar burned. Then we will hold the torch in a

Main Street In Lake Mills Research Paper
Imagine going on a drive with your family on a beautiful evening. You drive through small towns with
magnificent trees, 100 s of years old, lining the streets. If you drove down that road many of times,
you would know that the trees were amazing. Wouldn t it be a shame to drive down that street again,
and those beautiful trees were gone, and a sidewalk there instead? The trees lining Main Street in Lake
Mills shouldn t be cut down because the road detours will be an inconvenience to citizens and
businesses, the trees give a natural setting in the downtown area, and the estimated 4.8 million dollars
being spent on this project could be used for other funding in the city. One reason the trees lining

Also, according to the same article, at some points when concrete is being poured, citizens who are
living on Main Street may not be able to access their homes. This will cause an inconvenience, as
most people work during the day, and when they come home from work, they may not be able to
access their homes. Next, also according to the article South Main Street Reconstruction Still in
Planning Stages By Matt Gardner (www.hngnews.com), the planned detour as of right now is from
Interstate 94 to Highway 26, to Highway 18. Another option would be to go from Main Street to
Madison Street, then heading out Lake Street and to Highway Q. People who lives on Highway Q,
Family s are concerned this road will become overly crowded, which will lead to traffic jams and
accidents. In addition, there will be no way around Pinnacle Drive and Topel Street. I spoke with Tara
Topel, one of the owners of Topel s Towing and Repair, and asked her some questions. First, I asked,
Do you think that your business will be affected by the Main Street construction project? Topel replied
by saying, Yes, it most definitely. `We are actually planning on relocating temporarily during the
construction. Next, I asked Are you worried , Ms. Topel replied,

Analysis Of Dead Poets Society
A) Overview
The 1989 movie, Dead Poets Society, features a group of boys attending a private boarding school, the
Welton Academy. The central conflict of the movie stems from the clash between educational
approaches. The movie uses the educational conflict as an engine to propel the plot and to explore and
develop the characters.
The Welton Academy s education style is most definitely traditional. The school s educational
approach is revealed by Headmaster Nolan three minutes into the movie as he states the Four Pillars of
Welton Tradition. Honor. Discipline. Excellence. The word Tradition is literally engraved in the
schools pillars. This is similar to Hirsch s theory of Cultural Literacy a conservative theory of

Keating about 12 minutes into the movie he whispers in the boys ears the words carpe diem which in
Latin means seize the day. Mr. Keating embodies a teaching pedagogy of equality between teacher and
student in the classroom, teaching students to think independently and critically, and challenge
conventional thought. The boys seize the day by creating a club called The Dead Poets Society. Mr.
Keating s progressive pedagogy thus inspires a radical club. This is the first step in the boys move
from conservatism to progressivism and ultimately to a radical crisis. The club s radicalness peaks
when a member, Charlie Dalton demands that girls be allowed to attend Welton Academy. He causes a
full campus meeting where he mocks Headmaster Nolan by holding a telephone out and instructing
him that God has been calling and that he should answer. As one could expect, the conservative
headmaster does not respond well. Headmaster Nolan interviews each student individually until one
student, Richard Cameron, turns in the rest of the club to save himself from expulsion. This
demonstrates how a new approach can threaten more established norms, followed by a retaliatory
backlash.
The final major scene of the movie occurs after one of the boys, Neil Perry, defies his father by acting
as Puck in A Midsummer s Night Dream. This radical step leads his oppressive conservative father to
threaten to send him send him

expert of American art, together with the director of the Barber Institute Nicola Kaminsky, who made
possible the realisation of the exhibition and the event related.
The evening lecture held by Prof. Corbett gave an excellent introduction to the topic with his evening
lecture by presenting Bellows mutual themes with the Ashcan School, due of them being the
relationship between the artists and New York City. The lecture opened with Bellows Stag of
Sharkeys; the incredible visual impact of this painting is enough for the viewers to engage Bellows art,
and their eyes are drawn to the two men colliding in the middle of the painting who represent both the
thrill and the horror of violence. The visual

The Problems of Glaciers Melting Essay
Our planet has two glaciers of continental size, one being present on Antarctica and the other on
Greenland. Observations made by scientists over the last thirty five years all agree upon the notion of
shrinking, and or retreating of the ice sheets. The melting of ice sheets has powerful implications for
the millions of people who depend on glacial melt for drinking water and the millions of people who
will be displaced by the sea level rise occurring as a direct result of the melting. The observations of
ice melting also show that the rate at which the ice is melting is accelerating. Mountain glaciers
around the world are also on the retreat. Some instances of particular mountain glaciers may show
expansion, but studies done by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A third method known as satellite gravimetry measures changes in Earth s gravity field by deducing
satellite data and determining changes in ice mass.
When considering the retreat of the Greenland and the Antarctic ice sheets it is important to
understand how global warming is affecting the total mass and volume of the ice sheets. Global
warming, put simply is affecting ice sheets in two main ways. Warmer temperatures cause higher
levels of precipitation, which means more snowfall. On the contrary, warming temperatures cause ice
sheets to thin and melt. Therefore we must deduce which has the greater effect. A variety of
techniques, some which have been mentioned earlier have been employed over the years to measure
Greenland and Antarctica s mass balances. Various independent measurements have all agree upon a
clear long term trend showing a decline in ice mass. Confirmation has been acquired by the Gravity
Recovery and Climate Experiment, which measured shifts in Earth s gravity field. In the 1960s
Greenland was losing 100 gigatonnes of ice per year, this rate slowed during the 1970s and 1980s in
near mass balance. By 1996 the rate of ice mass loss had increased to 97 gigatonnes per year. As of
2007 a rapid increase of ice loss occurred, measured at 267 gigatonnes per year. In the larger scheme
of things we see how the amount of precipitation vs. the amount of melting interact with each other.
Earlier research suggested that the ice sheets

We re all Australian now poem analysis
Good morning/Good afternoon boys and girls aboriginal elders and Mrs. Brown
Andrew Barton Banjo Paterson (17 February 1864 5 February 1941) was an Australian bush poet,
journalist and author. He wrote many ballads and poems about Australian life, focusing particularly on
the rural and outback areas, including the district around Bin along, New South Wales, where he spent
much of his childhood. Banjo Paterson s, We re all Australians now was published in 1915. His largely

This change of pronouns gives a sense of the other , a separate entity. Through this otherness, he
betrays a feeling of superiority. His sometime overuse of victorious terminology shows complete
silencing of the actual circumstances of the war, which then sounds slightly superficial, therefore
betraying superiority.
Paterson s other purpose of this text is to promote nationalism amongst Australian men, persuading
them to enlist. He deliberately emphasises on how everyone in Australia is an Australian, through this
line English, Scotch, and Irish bred, They re all Australians now! This would make everyone at the
time feel obliged to join.
His victorious tone also conveys also conveys the glory and honour that accompanies being a soldier.
The actual hardships of the war which would dissuade enlisting if mentioned, is deliberately silenced

The careful choices of literary devices Paterson had successfully conveyed his underlying purpose to

which is the main focus of this poem.

Definition of Alliterative Verse
Definition of Alliterative Verse
Old English literature encompasses writings in Anglo Saxon England during its conversion to
Christianity in the 7th century up until the Norman Conquest in 1066. The roots of Anglo Saxon
poetry were based on Germanic tradition that was mainly in the form of alliterative verse (Greenblatt).
When comparing to other forms of poetry, there are 6 key characteristics that define alliterative verse:
four beat lines, medial caesuras, enjambments, half line alliteration, kennings and litotes. In addition
to Beowulf and Caedmon s Hymn , examples will also be taken from my alliterative verse translation
of the nursery rhyme Little Jack Horner .

If there are two pairs of different alliterative sounds, each pair does not have to be in the same half
line. For example in line 5 from Beowulf, a wrecker of mead benches, rampaging among foes there is
repetition of both r and m sounds. In the first line of Caedmon s Hymn , Sing prayers, and sound
praises of (1), half line alliteration is seen in the s and p sounds. There are not pairs of half line
alliteration in Jack the Horner. However, in the last line there are three alliterative stress syllables that
are linked by the p sound, Gleefully pulling a purple plum .
A kenning is a metaphoric, two term or compound expression used in place of a name or noun (
kenning ). In Beowulf, the term whale road in line 10 is a kenning for the ocean. In Caedmon s Hymn
, Wonder Father also means God. In my poem, Santa s big day is meant to be a kenning for Christmas.
A litote is an understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by negating its opposite ( litote ). In
Beowulf one of many litotes is seen lines 43 44, they decked his body no less bountifully , where no
less just means more, so that his body was actually more bountifully decked (Heaney) In the first line
of my alliterative verse poem, I used a litote. Jack the Horner, not gigantic was he. Not gigantic is the
litote in that it describes Jack as little. Anglo Saxon alliterative verse is defined by its structuring of
stress

Physical Therapy Is The Health Profession
Physical therapy is the health profession that provides treatment and management of physical
disability, malfunction, or pain via various modalities, and without the use of medicines, surgery, or
radiation [1]. An individual who practices physical therapy is known as a physical therapist. Physical
therapists are experts of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems, and they evaluate and treat
patients for issues that involve those systems [2]. The role of a physical therapist is to evaluate
patients, and to provide treatment to patients that focus primarily on movement. This includes, but is
not limited to, restoration of movement as well as improving movement, reducing pain levels,
returning function that may have been lost, and improving function.[2] The most predominant clinical
setting where physical therapists... provide care include hospitals, outpatient clinics, private practices,
nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health, school systems, and sport centers [2]. Typically,
to receive access to the services provided by a physical therapist, a patient has to be referred to a
physical therapist by a physician. [2] Therefore, physical therapy is usually a secondary health care.
The profession of physical therapy sounds fantastic, because it is. However, the art of physical therapy
wasn t just born a perfect creature; it took some time to develop as a great profession.
The official history of physical therapy is a history that is quite new, and barely dates

Reflection Paper On Fall Dance
I decided to watch the fall dance concert, Reflections, at IVC for this critique. The performances were
held in the theater which to my surprise, is larger than I expected. I was also delighted to see the use of
multiple kinds of lights to imbue a specific meaning. All the performances were great but the ones I
felt the most connection to after watching are the ones I have decided to write on. The first piece that
had a lasting impact on me is titled Unwavering struggle and is choreographed by Jennifer La Curan.
This piece is set to six different songs some of which are Oh, Dear What Can the Matter Be by
Elizabeth Knight, You Don t Own Me by Lesley Gore, and I Can t Keep Quiet by The Faithful Choir.
It includes seven dancers, all of which are girls. The second piece that stayed with me is the piece
titled Polar Variant also choreographed by Jennifer La Curan and other faculty dancers. There were a

What Are The Similarities Between The Colour Purple And...
The Bluest Eye V.S The Color Purple
In my essay, I ll be comparing and contrasting Pecola from novel The Bluest Eye , and Celie from the
movie The Color Purple . In the novel, The Bluest Eye , Pecola, and from the movie The Color Purple
, Celie, share many similarities in their stories. But they also have many differences that make them
who they are. They re both very young girls, going through a lot of struggles that you really wouldn t
be able to imagine happening, yet at the same time you can even compare it to yourself. To start off, I
d like to make a few comparisons about Pecola and Celie. Things that are similar between the two
characters is their lives. Pecola and Celie are both very young girls. Between the ages of 11 15. They
go through things that no child, nor anyone should go through. Like their beauty, or their sexual
innocence. Not only that, they re similar into how they see themselves, and what they go through with
their family. But at some points, Celie also shares a similarity to Geraldine. A black woman who lives
like a white woman. For example, getting married to do house work, and to please the man. Both
Celie and Geraldine don t feel any type of love towards their supposed significant other, but to another
living thing. For Geraldine, its her black pet cat, and for Celie, it s her little sister, Netty The loss of
innocence is what both characters share. Pecola, while at home doing house work, her father Cholly,
stumbles in drunk. For a while, he stands there and looks at Pecola. Imagining her as a younger
version of Pauline, Pecola s mother and Chollys wife. As Pecola s cleaning, Cholly makes a move on
her. Though it s not the first time he tried something like this to Pecola, he did succeed. Right in the
kitchen is where Pecola is raped by Cholly, taking away her innocence and leaving her pregnant. But
she loses the baby. Just like Celie. Celie, after her mother s death, is left with her younger sister and
father. Being the big sister, she does everything in her power to protect younger sibling, such as
protecting her from their father sexually assaulting her. Celie, after getting raped by her father, gets
pregnant, twice. She loses both babies.

Background of emotional intelligence:
Emotional intelligence was described formally by (Salovey Mayer). They defined it as the ability to
monitor one s own and others feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this
information to guide one s thinking and actions . They also provided an initial empirical
demonstration of how an aspect of emotional intelligence could be measured as a mental ability
(Mayer, DiPaolo, Salovey, 1990). In both articles, emotional intelligence was presented as a way to
conceptualize the relation between cognition and affect. Historically, emotion and intelligence were ...

Reflection On Organizational Change
I first off would like to start by saying these past 8 weeks have been a great experience! I have been
able to learn and gain new skills and tools that will not only help me in the rest of my schooling, but
will be very beneficial when it comes to my career. I have really enjoyed getting to see all different
experiences out there and a variety of perspectives on what one has done or not when in that situation.
It certainly has opened my eyes up to the world and I feel I am more aware and ready for what might
come my way now. Although after reading the Let s Drive a Stake In the Heart of the Industrial Age!
you never really know what s going to happen next. I plan to use all the OB tools that I have been able
to learn about in this term to assist the transformational process in organizational models. Using these
tools will help this process go more smoothly and make it easier not only for the company but for the
employees and customers. The transformational process in any company is hard and can be very
challenging during a time like this. I believe that change is challenging just from my experiences and
that it can take more time than one thinks or wants it to. I personally am not a fan of change, so when
there is a change going on in my personal or professional life I hope it is quick and easy (which it is
rarely ever). I have learned though change is good. As much as I may hate it, it is necessary and it
cannot be avoided. I learned these past weeks and have seen examples where some individuals in a
company will resist change, even leaders, and that is where I find the OB tools to help and make the
change as easy as possible for everyone in the company. I know this is something I will do to assist the
transformational process in organizational models in my future company. I will use the strategies we
have learned in this course to help and be more effective. One concept in this course I have learned
and it has stuck with me is focusing on employees. Without good relationships with employees and
making sure they are happy and acknowledged the work within the company will not get done
effectively and efficiently. As a manager, I will make sure that all employees are managed, able to

Uranus Experiments
Before being known as a planet Uranus was mistaken for a star. Probably the first time that Uranus
was observed was by Hipparchus of Nicaea. Hipparchus did mistaken Uranus for a star. Hipparchus
may have recorded it as a star for his star catalogue that was later incorporated into Ptolemy s
Almagest (1). William Herschel first observed Uranus on March 13, 1781 from the garden of his
house at 19 New King Street in Bath, Somerset, England. Herschel engaged in a series of observations
on the parallax of the fixed stars. Using a telescope of his own design.
When William first wrote on his journal about the discovery that he made, he said that he had found a
comet. He believed that he had found a comet, but he was also comparing it to a planet. So, William
was wondering if what he found was a comet or if it was a planet. William Herschel wrote to
Astronomer Royal, Nevil Maskelyne saying: I don t know what to call it. It is as likely to be a regular
planet moving in an orbit nearly circular to the sun as a Comet moving in a very eccentric ellipsis. I
have not yet seen any coma or tail to it (2).

Okonkwo A Tragic Hero Essay
Aristotle says that a tragic hero is someone who makes a mistake that leads to his/her own destruction.
In the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo is a successful person. He is known
throughout the clan as a brave warrior and a wealthy farmer. Okonkwo tried to lead his people through
British colonization, but the events he made during that time period ultimately lead to his demise.
Although Okonkwo is successful, he is considered a tragic hero because of how important he was to
his society and the fatal flaws he made that lead to his downfall.
In the society of Umuofia, Okonkwo was a very successful and prominent figure. When he was
young, Okonkwo was already doing things that made people look up to him. By the age of 18,

Okonkwo did not kill purposely all the time though. At a funeral for one of the village elders,
Okonkwo s gun had exploded and killed the elder s son.(124) This led to Okonkwo being banished to
his mother s land for 7 years. After the 7 years, he returned to his home clan and saw that the English

the new religion. His hate for the new people caused him to kill another person. Okonkwo was so
furious, His machete descended twice , he had killed one of the Englishmen in his clan.(204) This was
the breaking point. Okonkwo had lost hope that Umuofia would return to the way it was. Killing the
Englishmen was the final fatal error. Right after the killing, Okonkwo killed himself.

Film Noir s Influence On American Films
After World War II, the American motion picture studios began releasing films shot in black and
white, with a high contrast style known as Film Noir. Though the roots of this style of film was greatly
influenced by the German Expressionist movement in film during the late 1910 early 1920 s, and films
that resembled this style were made prior to the war, including the early films by Fritz Lang, a German
director who fled Germany prior to the war to work in America, this film style would become
prevalent during the post WWII era. Besides the shadowed lighting style and the psychologically
expressive mise en scène, the film noir plot lines often surrounded crime dramas and were greatly
influenced by the pulp fiction novels of the period by authors like Dashiell Hammett and ... Show

The LP sold well during the fifties, mostly to fans of high fidelity music who wanted longer cuts, like
jazz or classical records. Starting in 1956, FM radio and 33 1/3 RPM LP s would move into stereo

predominant programming, then sound quality was not as important to audiences, but as music came
to rule the airwaves, FM radio drew in new listeners because of its high fidelity sound

The Benefits of Adopting a Flat Tax Rate Essay
Our society today has strived to become familiar with our present tax system, but some just cannot
come to terms with it. The current tax code is unfair to those who are single, work for under $50, 000
dollars per year, or have large families. The high tax percentages and low exemptions make it difficult
for the average worker to prosper and get ahead in today s world. The tax system also discourages
citizens from saving and investing their earnings, ultimately pulling down the American economy.
Over the past few years numerous proposals for a flat tax rate have surfaced and been reviewed. These
proposals promise large tax cuts, fewer federal forms and costs, and larger exemptions (Armey 2). The
United States should adopt a flat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During tax season many American lives are complicated and literally put on hold due to the stress and
demand of taxes. Americans discover the tax code to be terribly confusing and frustrating, and often
citizens become very stressed. Many turn to alternative solutions of tax configurations to take the load
off of them, but come to realize that these services are rather expensive and sometimes inaccurate. Our
country s standard of living has also been decreased as a result of our nation s taxes. Tax percentages
are so elevated and exemptions are so minimal, it is virtually impossible for anyone to prosper and get
ahead in our world today.
Double and triple taxation is also an issue with our current tax system. Numerous Americans do not
save or invest their money for two core reasons: they do not have the money to invest, or they receive
double and triple taxation off the money that they do decide to invest (Merski 2). Some have very little
money remaining after their payday to invest and simply pass up on the offer of saving it. Others, on
the contrary, will not invest because even though they receive interest off that saved money, they are
later taxed on it. This outcome is a result of double and triple taxation and it is constantly annihilating
the American economy.
Lastly, the current tax system discourages workers from venturing on business risks (Merski 1).

Transforming Data and Information Overload Into A Defensible, Long Term Competitive Advantage
Introduction The proliferation of data, process and system integration technologies, combined with the
rapid advances made in analytics, Big Data, customer management and supply chain applications are
power catalysts of disruptive change in enterprise IT. Given the fact that many legacy, 3rd party and
previously disparate, disconnected systems are for the first time being integrated together, the amount
of data available for analysis and decision making has never been greater. Add to this the torrent of
data being generated daily through an enterprise s sales cycles, social networks subscribed to, and
customer interactions, and the amount of data available can becoming quickly overwhelming. All of
these dynamics taken together form the area of analytics and enterprise software called Big Data. As
tempting it is for the analytically minded to dive into these terabytes and explore for insights and
previously unknown associations in the data, to get the most value from the investments in BigData,
analytics, and enterprise applications, governance based frameworks need to be defined that align
these systems to specific strategic objectives (McKendrick, 2012). The advent of Hadoop, H Base,
MapReduce and other data analysis and aggregation platforms and applications only become relevant
in the context of strategic goals and their accomplishment (Rogers, 2011). That is why more

Summary Of The Pink Panther
Jeff Koons s Pink Panther is a piece of art that portrays an entertained, bare breasted lady, attired in a
green dress. Her head tilts backward in a posture appearing as if she is talking to people around her.
She is modeled after the former Hollywood star, Jayne Mansfield. Additionally, the Pink Panther, a
famous cartoon character, calmly rests on the left shoulder of Mansfield while wearing a hapless
expression. Both figures were mass market and pop culture knickknacks when the sculpture was
created. The work itself marked a crucial period of transformation in Koons s work and style. His
creations became brighter, bigger, and more startlingly cheerful. Koons surprised the public by his
brief realism and his resoluteness to depict the contemporary social and cultural situation. His work
could be understood as complex perspective on the present time. The image of the couple is
gratifyingly sophomoric. It depicts the lust for an object, which is accompanied by ingenuous
sentimentality. In general, the sculpture pinpoints everything Koons regards erroneous in the modern
American popular culture. Furthermore, the artwork portrays the way how people conduct themselves
in their daily activities and presents their common values and attitude to life. For instance, the
sculpture can be related to the problem of women s rights. Although the lady is utterly sexualized and
objectified, it is done in a vulgar way of a kitsch, which makes a viewer to think about the status of
woman in the modern society. In addition, utilizing recognizable celebrities as a selling point could be
considered a type of self irony and reflection on the contemporary status of art. Finally, the Pink
Panther blurs the difference between an art object and a piece of everyday culture and entertainment.
In this regards, it stands out from other works of postmodernism.

Essay about Jonathan Swift
Jonathan Swift
In an age of where rationality and morals were held to the accepted values, Jonathan Swift stood out
as a champion of humanism. All his life he attacked pretense and begged people to see that life is not
always what it seems when you look harder and think deeper. In addition, Swift was one of the most
powerful writers of his time; able to rally people and nations around the caustic and moral views
expressed in his works. His political writings for the Tories exposed the corruptions of government
and paved the way for his acclaimed satires. Swift s great strength lied in impressing people into
believing his ideals without blatantly professing them or becoming preachy. Swift was raised in

We do not merely agree with the moral evaluations implied; we have lived, in our imaginations,
through a moral experience (Williams 4). Swift doesn t simply tell us his beliefs; he makes the reader
sort it out through the context of the story. By placing his ideas and morals upon other characters,
Swift himself stands distant from these scenes he writes about. In doing so, he artistically, yet
implicitly, defines the interval between the normal and the absurd. We attain normality by guarding
against pride, and this we could do easily by observing the distorted figures in comedy and satire
(Quintana 39).
An example where Swift uses his satire in a crafty, implicit way is in one of his first major works, A
Tale of A Tub. The book is about exposing the corruption and abuses of religion at the time. In section
VI of the book, Swift takes the form of an earnest storyteller but in fact he is telling the history of the
major Christian Churches. The three main characters are obviously personas for the three main
churches at the time. There is Peter, who in truth represents the Roman Catholic Church; Martin, who
is named after the Protestant/Lutheran/Anglican Church; and Jack, who is named after Calvinism and
the other nonconformist Christian religions. Swift, as the narrator, is asserting to be telling this story
just like it happened, and not drawing any conclusions or seeing any

Plant Pollination In Plants
Every biotic and abiotic factor has a reason to coexist with the world. We can only live through
balance. When we are missing a factor it throws our system out of place. There is no exception with
how plants reproduce. Like the food chain, pollination happens in a cycle, but instead of what eats
what. It s more of the steps on how a plant sends off its seeds. Plants go through a process of
fertilization to produce seedlings. Most plants can not fertilize on their own. Plants can t just stand up
and walk to find a suitable mate like us humans. This does not mean that plants are not able to
reproduce. They have a special way to get their pollen onto their own or other plant s pistils. Plants
trade with pollinators. Pollinators are anything that transfers pollen to pistols. For example, bees are
the most common but they are not the only pollinators. Bats are pollinators, so are humans, even the
wind is considered a pollinator. Pollinators can be a living thing or and natural occurrence. Plants have
two major parts of their anatomy structure for reproducing. The anther, which is the male part that
contains the pollen. And the pistils, the female part of the flower. The goal is to get the pollen from the
anthers to the pistol. Pollinators have tasked this job. Pollinators visit plants for their own purposes, to
collect nectar, which is a sugary substance that can be used as food or to make honey, oil, or just to
hang out. When a pollinator visits a

Media Bias In The Media Essay
During former U.S president, Barack Obamas presidency, he administrated the Affordable Care Act.
Under the Affordable Care Act, women could receive free birth control. Employers were required to
cover all forms of birth control. On October 6th, Donald Trump issued a ruling that would allow
employers and corporations to drop the coverage of birth control if they had religious or moral reasons
to do so. This ruling has sparked a variety of responses. Many liberals are calling it an attack on
women while religious and conservative groups are happy that they don t have to go against their
religious beliefs anymore. The media and news sources were quick to report on this event. However,
some news sources have spun the story in certain ways in order to fit their agenda. The New York
Times and Fox News both twist this event to appeal to certain audiences using bias by headline,

communication outlets have become fundamental parts of modern society in the recent years.
Americans rely on these media outlets to stay updated on the worlds issues. However, these outlets
know exactly how to shape and influence people inconspicuously. The News often caters to certain

Wearable Health Monitoring Devices Can Be Enhanced By...
There is an explosive growth in wearable computing devices over the past couple of years mostly due
to technological advances in smart devices. Although most of these are self care monitoring devices
the need for assisted living where a patient can be monitored continuously using these devices are
emerging fast. In a typical tracking system, various vital biological signals, fall risks and changes in
predetermined health conditions are collected via sensors and shared with medical professionals for
intervention if necessary. Most popular applications of self care monitoring include daily activity
monitoring, emergency and fall detection, and rehabilitation. Despite these useful applications, the
paradigms such as autonomy, context awareness, and spontaneous interactions are not well integrated
into these existing systems yet.
Existing wearable health monitoring devices can be enhanced by adding adaptive biofeedback and
control capability. This will transform the current wearable health monitoring devices from a passive
monitoring device to a real time treatment assistive device. Such a device is capable of not only

Essay On Plant Hormones
The article explores the possibility of plants that we consume such as vegetables, fruits or other edible
plants, containing remaining hormones that may have both positive and negative impacts on our
health. Recent studies have indicated that there may be a connection between our gut microbes
stimulating the creation of molecules in response to the remnants of hormones in plant matter. Positive
impacts look at ABA rich foods as a way to protect against and fight off cancers cells, and also to
regulate inflammation and blood glucose levels. Further research is need to figure out and come to a
conclusion as to why certain hormones work to aid human health and others don t. A possible
explanation for some of the negative responses is probably ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Put simply, ABA tells the stomata to close when there isn t enough soil water for transpiration to
occur. When ninety percent of the plant s water is lost through the stomata, the turgid guard cells
become flaccid, causing the stomata to close. The process behind this is ABA binds to receptors on the
surface of the plasma membrane of guard cells. The receptors are then activated, resulting in various
pathways connecting to create a couple of occurrences: a rise in Ph in the cytosol and the transfer of
calcium ions from the vacuole to the cytosol. What these changes effect is the loss of negatively
charged ions, particularly nitrate and the chloride ion from the cell, as well as the positively charged
potassium ion. After losing the solutes, cytosol lessens the osmotic pressure and result in the loss of
turgidity. The second function mentioned is ABA s ability to improve the plant s potential for soaking
up water from the soil. The third is ABA s importance in protecting the cells from dehydrating, by
activating the proteins that encode genes, to aid the cells against dehydration damage. Whereas, in bud
dormancy (the fourth function mentioned), ABA helps to protect the apical meristem from drying out
during winter by making it dormant. The fifth function, a little different than bud dormancy, looks at
how ABA affects the process of seed dormancy and maturation, by keeping the seed to dormant until
favorable conditions occur

The War Between Iraq And Iran
The war between Iraq and Iran initiated by Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein in September 1980 provided
no gains or benefits to either country, at the end of the war in July of 1988 after 8 long years. At the
conclusion of many wars throughout history, at least one party resulted in gaining territory, wealth,
power, and other profits. However, in reality it is understood that no one ever wins in war due to the
adverse affects among innocent humanity; exemplified by the Iraq Iran war. The initial conflict begins
in 1979 when Iran went through the Islamic Revolution overthrowing Mohammad Reza Shah, the
current head of the Iran. This period of Iranian turmoil lead to a many changes in government,
creating a politically weak country. Trying to gain from Iran s turmoil Saddam Hussein made plans to
control the region. Saddam Hussein, the president of Iraq, wanted exclusive Iraqi sovereignty over the
Shatt el Arab River... forming Iraq s best outlet to the sea (History). This would give Iraq political and
economic dominance of the gulf while making Hussein the leader of the Arab world. Saddam also felt
that the new Iran revolutionary leadership would threaten Iraq s delicate Sunni Shia balance (Federal
Research Division). Ayatollah Khomeini was brought to power after the Revolution and directly
opposed Saddam Hussein and did not disguise his desire to see him toppled (BBC). The distinguishing
factors of the Iraq Iran war were, due to Hussein s commands, its indiscriminate missile

The Importance Of Ramadan
Ramadan is an important ritual for Muslims to practise because Allah commanded to follow it and
develop faith in him (get his consciousness). From these responses, the data indicates that Ramadan is
significantly important for Muslims because fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, which is
obligatory for Muslims to observe for a month. The responses of surveyors seem to explain that 4
Muslims believed that Ramadan is important because the Qur an was first revealed to Prophet
Muhammad . Nevertheless, the old Muslims believed Ramadan is about forgiving sins and purify
souls , which makes them feel more purified spiritually. This demonstrates that these 4 Muslims know
the revelation of the holy book as its importance, but they do not ... Show more content on

However, others believe fasting is to clean sins and ask for forgiveness to Allah. In contrast,
interviewee believes fasting teach them self control and discipline.
According to the secondary research, fasting gives Muslims an opportunity to practice self control and
cleanse sins, the body and mind. Many cultures and religions use fasting for this purpose. During
Ramadan, fasting helps Muslims with their spiritual devotion as well as in developing a feeling of
kinship with other Muslims.
Therefore, Ramadan is important for Muslims to practise self control, cleanse sins, discipline, getting
rid of bad habits, purify souls and the holy book was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad. By fasting
in Ramadan, Muslims increase spiritual devotion towards Allah as it is the purpose of Ramadan.
Focus Question 3
3. How is Ramadan significant to Muslims in Australia today?
Ramadan is significant to Muslims in Australia today, but Eid ul Fitr is incredibly important because it
is celebrated at the end of the month by gathering together in the mosque for prayer and celebrating it
with family and friends. This is because Ramadan is about fasting for a month and following the rules
of fasting. However, the last three days of the month are very important because Eid is a special
occasion for Muslims, it is about social gathering, spending

Mental Health Issues Are Treated Fairly By The Criminal...
This assignment will examine if individuals with mental health issues are treated fairly by the
Criminal Justice System, taking into account the provisions of the Mental Health Act, the roles of
professionals within it and the development of how people with mental health disorders are, and have
historically been, viewed in society.
Individuals with mental illnesses were initially segregated or incarcerated. The West has seen mental
health views change as society has developed and medicine advanced. The first asylum dates back to
the Bethlam Hospital, in 1247. Early views of society linked mental health (conditions such as
epilepsy) to evil forces or witchcraft. It could be argued this was early evidence of labelling and
stigma. Society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast, the nature vs nature debate heavily influences this subject. Are people born with mental
illness or is it developed or is there an overlap between the two? Hans Eysenck argued that there were
similarities between how a mental illness is acquired and the development of criminality;
schizophrenia is often hereditary, however not all siblings will inherit it and it can be acquired without
any hereditary element. Both genetic and social factors, such as drug or alcohol abuse can lead to
mental illnesses and as society has developed, the latter is now much more prevalent.
Systematic care was not seen until 19th Century, moving away from institutions to a system that was
more segregative, centralised and managed (Rogers, A. Pilgrim, D. 2001). The Victorian era saw
scientific theory replacing religious belief around mental illness and psychiatry emerged as a new
discipline. The first link between mental and physical illness followed the 1926 Royal Commission on
Lunacy and Mental Disorder which stated that Mental and physical illness should now be seen as
overlapping and not as distinct . The 1959 Mental Health Act was the first evidence of community
care and in the 1960s, following advances in medicine and drug treatment, more focus on rights of
individuals, and advances in social science and philosophy combined to start deinstitutionalisation.
Treatment for people with mental illness has developed from incarceration in

Essay about My Bedroom
My house is quite large. It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, two living rooms, a dining
room, a special games room and a big front and back garden. My favourite rooms is my bedroom. I
love it because it is the only room in my house where I can lock myself away from the rest of the
world. After a long day, all i want to do is go up tom my cosy bedroom and either listen to some
mellow music, or lie down, unwind and watch a bit of T.V or maybe even a relaxing film. My
bedroom is a very special and different room. Thriugh the day it s a relaxing sanctuary but through the
night where all my wildest dream and fantasy s can be let loose into the tender world. Monsters need
to be killed and damsels need to be saved. All the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My favourite thing to do in my bedroom is jump on my bed and once when my friends came to sleep
over we had a game to see who could jump and make their head touch the ceiling and naturally I won
but my little sister would burst in without knocking and see what we was doing and ofcourse the first
thing she did was say Im telling mum in her little whining annoying voice and run down the stair and
tell my mum. So it was a long time i had to wait to have another sleepover. In the corner you can see
the fairies and pixies fighting over the pizza i was eating yesterday which is infact my favourite food.
The design of the rooms is very unique like everything has been put in a place for a reason. The oldest
think i can remember here is the sofa which i bought 2 years ago. I remember when we first bought it,
the smile on my face and the arguing between my dad and brother. Go left, Go left he would yell. Ahh
good times. It used to be clean but the constant food i would eat on it could have changed that. Like
most teenagers i have many posters on my walls mostly of role models that I admire, favourite teams
and a few cute girls here and there. The most visible thing here is probably the red carpet that covers
the bedroom as far as your eyes can see. In the corner of my bedroom is my desk which I normally do
all of my homework and assignments, On top of it sat my computer which is always on. My previous
desk somehow broke and

What Are The Social Qualities Of The 1920 s Flappers
The book Flapper by Joshua Zeitz is a book on the modern woman and the correlation to the 1920 s
flapper. It talked about the political, social, and economic qualities of the 1920 s that created the
modern woman and the infamous 1920 s flapper. The government and its president were mentioned
especially when it came to making war look good through the new form of advertisement. The
movies, books, stars, and style were by far the most popular subject of the book. The one percenters
and the women who wore knock off Chanel and plastic gold were both described in great detail. In
Flapper the political, economic, and social qualities of the 1920 s proved that the the infamous flapper
and the modern woman were one in the same. In Chapter 17 Joshua ... Show more content on

One already knows that Zelda was the first flapper, but believe me after her there were many more.
Lipstick was a cover name for a famous 1920 s newspaper columnist, who wrote about her weekly
adventures about New York as a flapper. She drank, slept with various men, smoked, wore dresses that
didn t cover her knees, and she was sexy, rebellious, modern, graceful, honest, funny, and every
teenage girls dream. Lipstick lived a life that so many women of the 1920 s wanted to be. Then there
was the movie stars. Clara, Colleen, and Brooks were the flappers on the screen. Surprisingly only one
of these girls actually embodied the flapper lifestyle off the screen. Brooks was this single actress. She
slept with various actors, directors, and partied late. She drank and smoked. Brooks was actually from
Kansas but literally ripped the Kansas out of her and built up a New York flapper instead. She hated
Hollywood and never wanted to act but life took her that way. Clara however, loved to act and was
just about the luckiest girl in the world. She won a contest that she probably shouldn t have won
because of her poverty stricken life and horrible luck. However, she won and it brought her fame and
fortune. Everyone loved her and she loved everyone. She smiled and said hello to everyone. Clara was
the girl next door in Hollywood and the crowd loved it. Colleen is the daughter with connections. She
got in by her uncle and once this Daddy, what is beer? act wore off, she hit the bar and cut her hair and
became the irish flapper. She was the one that mother s would use to say it was ok to by their
daughters dresses and let them live in the footsteps of flapperdom. Colleen was a proper wife and only
a flapper on screen or so said the papers. The flappers of the 1920 s were the life of the party and were
the first modern women. The way they acted, talked, dressed, and were viewed was everything to

  • 2. Chaucer s Candide And Shakespeare s Macbeth Many famous literary works were written as a way to give commentary on the society in which the author lived such as Voltaire s Candide and Shakespeare s Macbeth. Geoffrey Chaucer, famous for his The Canterbury Tales, and considered instrumental in the creation of English literature, is not as well known for social commentary in his writing. However, The Canterbury Tales do indeed possess insight and analysis of society, namely the role of the authority figures in the Church. Chaucer was critical of the abuses and misuses he saw in the authority within the Church. He demonstrated his awareness of and concern over the problematic behaviors of those in authority in the Church through his writings seen in The Canterbury Tales. Through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If one considers that Chaucer was also able to survive two regime changes, one would realize the immense diplomatic skill that Chaucer must have possessed. Typically, regime changes lead to massive upheaval in all positions of administration. Yet, Chaucer maintained his position as a royal diplomat regardless of the ruler. (Ackroyd 68). This alone gives testament to his indispensable worth to the British kingdom, which was, at that time in history, an institution second only to the Catholic Church. Thus, because of the power held by the Catholic Church, Chaucer would have likely had many encounters with the Church in its people and leaders. An apt symbol for the Catholic culture of fourteenth century London might be found in the fact that there were ninety nine churches, and ninety five inns, within the walls (Ackroyd 8). Common street talk included such passing phrases like, God save you, God give you grace, and God s speed (Ackroyd 7). The Church s reach stretched into the day to day life of all around Europe, regardless of class. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Chaucer s poetry would focus so much on religion and the practices of religion. And, because Chaucer participated devoutly in the religious practices, it makes sense that he would have felt an urgent desire to effect change in the faulty and corrupt practices of Church officials. Thus, Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales serve as a first hand analysis of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A fraction that has high content of the specific organelle and low contamination by other organelles is desired however a fraction with highly purified mitochondria is better even if the most mitochondria is found in other fractions. The purity of mitochondrial fractions is usually determined by enzyme marker detection assay(Hajek et al 2004). In our experiment we will use differential centrifugation to isolate the mitochondria of cauliflower and then assay SDH activity using a fixed time assay. We will then measure protein content in our fractions and calculate specific activity and total activity of our fractions. Materials and Methods Mitochondrial Isolating We used to florets from the cauliflower and disrupted the cell walls using a cold isolation buffer (0.3 M D mannitol, 0.02 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.2) and an abrasive, we then strained the homogenate with cheesecloth into a centrifuge tube suppoerted by ice. The homogenate was then centrifuged at 600 g for 10 minutes at 4⁰C. The postnuclear supernatant was removed and centrifuged at 12,000 g for 30 minutes at 4⁰C. The post mitochondrial supernatant was removed and the mitochondrial pellet was resuspended in a cold assay buffer (0.3 M D mannitol, 0.01 M KCl, 0.005 M MgCl₂, 0.02 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.2). • 4. Boston Massacre Happened What Really Happened at the Boston Massacre It was a cool night in Boston in early march. I was passing by the customs house while a group of boys began to yell and hollering at some British soldiers. As the boys continued the soldiers began to fluster, so much to the point that he strikes one of the boys with his rifle. And as soon as I can blink, I was in the middle of a crowd surrounding the soldier. As the crowd grew, more soldiers came to his side. The crowd started to get out of control so one of the soldiers picked up his musket and fired into the crowd and so his allies followed suit with one of the musket shots nearly missing me. All of the citizens run in all directions and the crowd nearly trampling children. I returned home and later discovered that the soldiers were placed under house arrest and soon after taken to jail and charged for the death of several people. As things heated up in court, more and more British soldiers arrived in Boston. They did this to bring peace to Boston but it did not do that it all. It did the exact opposite and caused even more chaos. And as chaos spread ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Examples Of Hero Cycle Of Harry Potter The Hero Cycle of Harry Potter What is a hero s cycle? The hero s cycle is a quest pattern that all heroes (someone who embarks on a quest) follow. The hero s cycle is found in almost all myths, legends and novels. A great example of the hero s cycle could be seen in the novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone. The main character, Harry Potter, goes through three important stages of the cycle, the departure, initiation, and the return stage. Theses stages have subdivisions which not only contributes to the growth of the hero, but also lays out what a hero goes through in order to achieve his/her quest. Joseph Campbell, the founder of the hero s journey precisely lays out each stage and subdivision on what the hero goes through. The hero first starts in the ordinary world where he is used to everything. Harry who lives in the cubby under the stairs, is used to being bullied by his uncle, aunt and his cousin. Harry s journey begins when he gets a mail. This mail is important because Harry has never received a letter before due to the fact that he has no family. As he is opening the envelope Dudley, Harry s cousin, sanches the mail from Harry and gives it to his father, Vernon. Vernon refuses Harry s call to adventure by ripping, burning, and shredding the mail Harry receives. Joseph Campbell s Hero With A Thousand Faces, as summarized by Christopher Vogler, states, A Hero often refuses [or is reluctant] to take on the Journey because of fears and insecurities that have ... The central conflict of the movie stems from the clash between educational approaches. The movie uses the educational conflict as an engine to propel the plot and to explore and develop the characters. The Welton Academy s education style is most definitely traditional. The school s educational approach is revealed by Headmaster Nolan three minutes into the movie as he states the Four Pillars of Welton Tradition. Honor. Discipline. Excellence. Mr. Keating embodies a teaching pedagogy of equality between teacher and student in the classroom, teaching students to think independently and critically, and challenge conventional thought. The boys seize the day by creating a club called The Dead Poets Society. Mr. Keating s progressive pedagogy thus inspires a radical club. This is the first step in the boys move from conservatism to progressivism and ultimately to a radical crisis. The club s radicalness peaks when a member, Charlie Dalton demands that girls be allowed to attend Welton Academy. He causes a full campus meeting where he mocks Headmaster Nolan by holding a telephone out and instructing him that God has been calling and that he should answer. As one could expect, the conservative headmaster does not respond well. Headmaster Nolan interviews each student individually until one student, Richard Cameron, turns in the rest of the club to save himself from expulsion. This demonstrates how a new approach can threaten more established norms, followed by a retaliatory backlash. Observations made by scientists over the last thirty five years all agree upon the notion of shrinking, and or retreating of the ice sheets. The melting of ice sheets has powerful implications for the millions of people who depend on glacial melt for drinking water and the millions of people who will be displaced by the sea level rise occurring as a direct result of the melting. The observations of ice melting also show that the rate at which the ice is melting is accelerating. Mountain glaciers around the world are also on the retreat. A third method known as satellite gravimetry measures changes in Earth s gravity field by deducing satellite data and determining changes in ice mass. When considering the retreat of the Greenland and the Antarctic ice sheets it is important to understand how global warming is affecting the total mass and volume of the ice sheets. Global warming, put simply is affecting ice sheets in two main ways. Warmer temperatures cause higher levels of precipitation, which means more snowfall. On the contrary, warming temperatures cause ice sheets to thin and melt. Therefore we must deduce which has the greater effect. A variety of techniques, some which have been mentioned earlier have been employed over the years to measure Greenland and Antarctica s mass balances. Various independent measurements have all agree upon a clear long term trend showing a decline in ice mass. Confirmation has been acquired by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, which measured shifts in Earth s gravity field. In the 1960s Greenland was losing 100 gigatonnes of ice per year, this rate slowed during the 1970s and 1980s in near mass balance. By 1996 the rate of ice mass loss had increased to 97 gigatonnes per year. As of 2007 a rapid increase of ice loss occurred, measured at 267 gigatonnes per year. In the larger scheme of things we see how the amount of precipitation vs. the amount of melting interact with each other. Earlier research suggested that the ice sheets ... • 15. Definition of Alliterative Verse Definition of Alliterative Verse Old English literature encompasses writings in Anglo Saxon England during its conversion to Christianity in the 7th century up until the Norman Conquest in 1066. The roots of Anglo Saxon poetry were based on Germanic tradition that was mainly in the form of alliterative verse (Greenblatt). When comparing to other forms of poetry, there are 6 key characteristics that define alliterative verse: four beat lines, medial caesuras, enjambments, half line alliteration, kennings and litotes. However, in the last line there are three alliterative stress syllables that are linked by the p sound, Gleefully pulling a purple plum . A kenning is a metaphoric, two term or compound expression used in place of a name or noun ( kenning ). In Beowulf, the term whale road in line 10 is a kenning for the ocean. In Caedmon s Hymn , Wonder Father also means God. In my poem, Santa s big day is meant to be a kenning for Christmas. A litote is an understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by negating its opposite ( litote ). In Beowulf one of many litotes is seen lines 43 44, they decked his body no less bountifully , where no less just means more, so that his body was actually more bountifully decked (Heaney) In the first line of my alliterative verse poem, I used a litote. Jack the Horner, not gigantic was he. Not gigantic is the litote in that it describes Jack as little. Anglo Saxon alliterative verse is defined by its structuring of stress ... Physical Therapy Is The Health Profession Physical therapy is the health profession that provides treatment and management of physical disability, malfunction, or pain via various modalities, and without the use of medicines, surgery, or radiation [1]. An individual who practices physical therapy is known as a physical therapist. Physical therapists are experts of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems, and they evaluate and treat patients for issues that involve those systems [2]. The role of a physical therapist is to evaluate patients, and to provide treatment to patients that focus primarily on movement. This includes, but is not limited to, restoration of movement as well as improving movement, reducing pain levels, returning function that may have been lost, and improving function.[2] The most predominant clinical setting where physical therapists... provide care include hospitals, outpatient clinics, private practices, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health, school systems, and sport centers [2]. • 18. Reflection Paper On Fall Dance I decided to watch the fall dance concert, Reflections, at IVC for this critique. The performances were held in the theater which to my surprise, is larger than I expected. I was also delighted to see the use of multiple kinds of lights to imbue a specific meaning. All the performances were great but the ones I felt the most connection to after watching are the ones I have decided to write on. The first piece that had a lasting impact on me is titled Unwavering struggle and is choreographed by Jennifer La Curan. This piece is set to six different songs some of which are Oh, Dear What Can the Matter Be by Elizabeth Knight, You Don t Own Me by Lesley Gore, and I Can t Keep Quiet by The Faithful Choir. It includes seven dancers, all of which are girls. The second piece that stayed with me is the piece titled Polar Variant also choreographed by Jennifer La Curan and other faculty dancers. There were a mix of four guys and seven girls all of which were split in two different groups. The first dance started with girls who were dressed in brown suits walking in an upright manner. There were no interactions made and it is clear that they were depicting working men. They begin to start walking in a circle center stage. One girl in a bright dress then enters stage while the men continue to walk around in a circle. They pay her little attention and the lyrics to the song Oh Dear What Can the Matter Be almost seem to mock the situation. There is an obvious problem that has only just ... The Bluest Eye V.S The Color Purple In my essay, I ll be comparing and contrasting Pecola from novel The Bluest Eye , and Celie from the movie The Color Purple . In the novel, The Bluest Eye , Pecola, and from the movie The Color Purple , Celie, share many similarities in their stories. But they also have many differences that make them who they are. They re both very young girls, going through a lot of struggles that you really wouldn t be able to imagine happening, yet at the same time you can even compare it to yourself. To start off, I d like to make a few comparisons about Pecola and Celie. Things that are similar between the two characters is their lives. Pecola and Celie are both very young girls. Between the ages of 11 15. They go through things that no child, nor anyone should go through. Like their beauty, or their sexual innocence. Not only that, they re similar into how they see themselves, and what they go through with their family. But at some points, Celie also shares a similarity to Geraldine. A black woman who lives like a white woman. For example, getting married to do house work, and to please the man. Both Celie and Geraldine don t feel any type of love towards their supposed significant other, but to another living thing. For Geraldine, its her black pet cat, and for Celie, it s her little sister, Netty The loss of innocence is what both characters share. Pecola, while at home doing house work, her father Cholly, stumbles in drunk. For a while, he stands there and looks at Pecola. Imagining her as a younger version of Pauline, Pecola s mother and Chollys wife. As Pecola s cleaning, Cholly makes a move on her. Though it s not the first time he tried something like this to Pecola, he did succeed. Right in the kitchen is where Pecola is raped by Cholly, taking away her innocence and leaving her pregnant. But she loses the baby. Just like Celie. Celie, after her mother s death, is left with her younger sister and father. Being the big sister, she does everything in her power to protect younger sibling, such as protecting her from their father sexually assaulting her. • 22. Reflection On Organizational Change I first off would like to start by saying these past 8 weeks have been a great experience! I have been able to learn and gain new skills and tools that will not only help me in the rest of my schooling, but will be very beneficial when it comes to my career. I have really enjoyed getting to see all different experiences out there and a variety of perspectives on what one has done or not when in that situation. It certainly has opened my eyes up to the world and I feel I am more aware and ready for what might come my way now. Although after reading the Let s Drive a Stake In the Heart of the Industrial Age! you never really know what s going to happen next. I plan to use all the OB tools that I have been able to learn about in this term to assist the transformational process in organizational models. Using these tools will help this process go more smoothly and make it easier not only for the company but for the employees and customers. The transformational process in any company is hard and can be very challenging during a time like this. I believe that change is challenging just from my experiences and that it can take more time than one thinks or wants it to. I personally am not a fan of change, so when there is a change going on in my personal or professional life I hope it is quick and easy (which it is rarely ever). I have learned though change is good. As much as I may hate it, it is necessary and it cannot be avoided. I learned these past weeks and have seen examples where some individuals in a company will resist change, even leaders, and that is where I find the OB tools to help and make the change as easy as possible for everyone in the company. I know this is something I will do to assist the transformational process in organizational models in my future company. I will use the strategies we have learned in this course to help and be more effective. One concept in this course I have learned and it has stuck with me is focusing on employees. William Herschel first observed Uranus on March 13, 1781 from the garden of his house at 19 New King Street in Bath, Somerset, England. Herschel engaged in a series of observations on the parallax of the fixed stars. Using a telescope of his own design. When William first wrote on his journal about the discovery that he made, he said that he had found a comet. He believed that he had found a comet, but he was also comparing it to a planet. So, William was wondering if what he found was a comet or if it was a planet. William Herschel wrote to Astronomer Royal, Nevil Maskelyne saying: I don t know what to call it. Transforming Data and Information Overload Into A Defensible, Long Term Competitive Advantage Introduction The proliferation of data, process and system integration technologies, combined with the rapid advances made in analytics, Big Data, customer management and supply chain applications are power catalysts of disruptive change in enterprise IT. Given the fact that many legacy, 3rd party and previously disparate, disconnected systems are for the first time being integrated together, the amount of data available for analysis and decision making has never been greater. Add to this the torrent of data being generated daily through an enterprise s sales cycles, social networks subscribed to, and customer interactions, and the amount of data available can becoming quickly overwhelming. All of these dynamics taken together form the area of analytics and enterprise software called Big Data. As tempting it is for the analytically minded to dive into these terabytes and explore for insights and previously unknown associations in the data, to get the most value from the investments in BigData, analytics, and enterprise applications, governance based frameworks need to be defined that align these systems to specific strategic objectives (McKendrick, 2012). • 30. Summary Of The Pink Panther Jeff Koons s Pink Panther is a piece of art that portrays an entertained, bare breasted lady, attired in a green dress. Her head tilts backward in a posture appearing as if she is talking to people around her. She is modeled after the former Hollywood star, Jayne Mansfield. Additionally, the Pink Panther, a famous cartoon character, calmly rests on the left shoulder of Mansfield while wearing a hapless expression. Both figures were mass market and pop culture knickknacks when the sculpture was created. The work itself marked a crucial period of transformation in Koons s work and style. His creations became brighter, bigger, and more startlingly cheerful. Koons surprised the public by his brief realism and his resoluteness to depict the contemporary social and cultural situation. His work could be understood as complex perspective on the present time. The image of the couple is gratifyingly sophomoric. It depicts the lust for an object, which is accompanied by ingenuous sentimentality. In general, the sculpture pinpoints everything Koons regards erroneous in the modern American popular culture. Furthermore, the artwork portrays the way how people conduct themselves in their daily activities and presents their common values and attitude to life. For instance, the sculpture can be related to the problem of women s rights. Although the lady is utterly sexualized and objectified, it is done in a vulgar way of a kitsch, which makes a viewer to think about the status of woman in the modern society. In addition, utilizing recognizable celebrities as a selling point could be considered a type of self irony and reflection on the contemporary status of art. Finally, the Pink Panther blurs the difference between an art object and a piece of everyday culture and entertainment. In this regards, it stands out from other works of postmodernism. In doing so, he artistically, yet implicitly, defines the interval between the normal and the absurd. We attain normality by guarding against pride, and this we could do easily by observing the distorted figures in comedy and satire (Quintana 39). • 33. Plant Pollination In Plants Every biotic and abiotic factor has a reason to coexist with the world. We can only live through balance. When we are missing a factor it throws our system out of place. There is no exception with how plants reproduce. Like the food chain, pollination happens in a cycle, but instead of what eats what. It s more of the steps on how a plant sends off its seeds. Plants go through a process of fertilization to produce seedlings. Most plants can not fertilize on their own. Plants can t just stand up and walk to find a suitable mate like us humans. This does not mean that plants are not able to reproduce. They have a special way to get their pollen onto their own or other plant s pistils. Plants trade with pollinators. Pollinators are anything that transfers pollen to pistols. For example, bees are the most common but they are not the only pollinators. Bats are pollinators, so are humans, even the wind is considered a pollinator. Pollinators can be a living thing or and natural occurrence. Plants have two major parts of their anatomy structure for reproducing. The anther, which is the male part that contains the pollen. And the pistils, the female part of the flower. The goal is to get the pollen from the anthers to the pistol. Pollinators have tasked this job. Pollinators visit plants for their own purposes, to collect nectar, which is a sugary substance that can be used as food or to make honey, oil, or just to hang out. When a pollinator visits a ... By using the bear alone Mr. West turned Ralph Lauren onto the masses of rappers and fans (Kanye West: The Evolution of an Icon s Clothes). As stated by West, he is the most influential person in fashion in the last ten years . That statement very well may be true. West is always in the public eye showing off his new outfits. These outfits are then turned over to the masses where people take inspiration from them. Many people like to mimic and dress after their favorite celebrity but it seems West has started an empire of clothing, striking deals with A.P.C., Nike, and Adidas seemingly creating some type of sub genre to clothing called streetwear . West has been inspiring and influencing the way rappers and the regular population dress since the days he wore a bear on his shirt. Newer staples of West s fashion are tighter fitting clothes, leather, and suits. These types of materials and clothing are undoubtedly a new trend in the hip hop community and industry all courtesy to Kanye Omari West (C.M., Emmanuel). Rap with introspective, thought provoking lyrics never really dominated the industry. The type of rappers who wrote about these kinds of things were usually more underground artists and generally called backpack rappers and their fans, backpackers . • 36. Media Bias In The Media Essay During former U.S president, Barack Obamas presidency, he administrated the Affordable Care Act. Under the Affordable Care Act, women could receive free birth control. Employers were required to cover all forms of birth control. On October 6th, Donald Trump issued a ruling that would allow employers and corporations to drop the coverage of birth control if they had religious or moral reasons to do so. This ruling has sparked a variety of responses. Many liberals are calling it an attack on women while religious and conservative groups are happy that they don t have to go against their religious beliefs anymore. The media and news sources were quick to report on this event. However, some news sources have spun the story in certain ways in order to fit their agenda. The New York Times and Fox News both twist this event to appeal to certain audiences using bias by headline, omission, and choice of words while the Kaiser Family Foundation stays neutral. Mass communication outlets have become fundamental parts of modern society in the recent years. Americans rely on these media outlets to stay updated on the worlds issues. However, these outlets know exactly how to shape and influence people inconspicuously. The News often caters to certain groups and the truth is usually dismissed. Instead of being informed about the important issues, the media tends to focus on entertaining topics. Most Americans are not aware that their views are being dictated by the media and the ... • 37. Wearable Health Monitoring Devices Can Be Enhanced By... There is an explosive growth in wearable computing devices over the past couple of years mostly due to technological advances in smart devices. Although most of these are self care monitoring devices the need for assisted living where a patient can be monitored continuously using these devices are emerging fast. In a typical tracking system, various vital biological signals, fall risks and changes in predetermined health conditions are collected via sensors and shared with medical professionals for intervention if necessary. Most popular applications of self care monitoring include daily activity monitoring, emergency and fall detection, and rehabilitation. Despite these useful applications, the paradigms such as autonomy, context awareness, and spontaneous interactions are not well integrated into these existing systems yet. Existing wearable health monitoring devices can be enhanced by adding adaptive biofeedback and control capability. This will transform the current wearable health monitoring devices from a passive monitoring device to a real time treatment assistive device. Such a device is capable of not only collecting, storing, and monitoring raw and synthesised data similar to the current wearable healthcare devices, but can also provide autonomous reconfiguration, controlled treatment processes by using collected data to provide intelligent local and remote feedback with decision making. There are a large number of applications that can be benefited from such a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay On Plant Hormones The article explores the possibility of plants that we consume such as vegetables, fruits or other edible plants, containing remaining hormones that may have both positive and negative impacts on our health. Recent studies have indicated that there may be a connection between our gut microbes stimulating the creation of molecules in response to the remnants of hormones in plant matter. Positive impacts look at ABA rich foods as a way to protect against and fight off cancers cells, and also to regulate inflammation and blood glucose levels. Further research is need to figure out and come to a conclusion as to why certain hormones work to aid human health and others don t. A possible explanation for some of the negative responses is probably ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Put simply, ABA tells the stomata to close when there isn t enough soil water for transpiration to occur. When ninety percent of the plant s water is lost through the stomata, the turgid guard cells become flaccid, causing the stomata to close. The process behind this is ABA binds to receptors on the surface of the plasma membrane of guard cells. The receptors are then activated, resulting in various pathways connecting to create a couple of occurrences: a rise in Ph in the cytosol and the transfer of calcium ions from the vacuole to the cytosol. What these changes effect is the loss of negatively charged ions, particularly nitrate and the chloride ion from the cell, as well as the positively charged potassium ion. After losing the solutes, cytosol lessens the osmotic pressure and result in the loss of turgidity. The second function mentioned is ABA s ability to improve the plant s potential for soaking up water from the soil. The third is ABA s importance in protecting the cells from dehydrating, by activating the proteins that encode genes, to aid the cells against dehydration damage. Whereas, in bud dormancy (the fourth function mentioned), ABA helps to protect the apical meristem from drying out during winter by making it dormant. The fifth function, a little different than bud dormancy, looks at how ABA affects the process of seed dormancy and maturation, by keeping the seed to dormant until favorable conditions occur ... The War Between Iraq And Iran The war between Iraq and Iran initiated by Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein in September 1980 provided no gains or benefits to either country, at the end of the war in July of 1988 after 8 long years. At the conclusion of many wars throughout history, at least one party resulted in gaining territory, wealth, power, and other profits. The initial conflict begins in 1979 when Iran went through the Islamic Revolution overthrowing Mohammad Reza Shah, the current head of the Iran. This period of Iranian turmoil lead to a many changes in government, creating a politically weak country. Trying to gain from Iran s turmoil Saddam Hussein made plans to control the region. This would give Iraq political and economic dominance of the gulf while making Hussein the leader of the Arab world. Saddam also felt that the new Iran revolutionary leadership would threaten Iraq s delicate Sunni Shia balance (Federal Research Division). • 41. Mental Health Issues Are Treated Fairly By The Criminal... This assignment will examine if individuals with mental health issues are treated fairly by the Criminal Justice System, taking into account the provisions of the Mental Health Act, the roles of professionals within it and the development of how people with mental health disorders are, and have historically been, viewed in society. Individuals with mental illnesses were initially segregated or incarcerated. The West has seen mental health views change as society has developed and medicine advanced. The first asylum dates back to the Bethlam Hospital, in 1247. Early views of society linked mental health (conditions such as epilepsy) to evil forces or witchcraft. It could be argued this was early evidence of labelling and stigma. Society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast, the nature vs nature debate heavily influences this subject. Are people born with mental illness or is it developed or is there an overlap between the two? Hans Eysenck argued that there were similarities between how a mental illness is acquired and the development of criminality; schizophrenia is often hereditary, however not all siblings will inherit it and it can be acquired without any hereditary element. Both genetic and social factors, such as drug or alcohol abuse can lead to mental illnesses and as society has developed, the latter is now much more prevalent. Systematic care was not seen until 19th Century, moving away from institutions to a system that was more segregative, centralised and managed (Rogers, A. Pilgrim, D. 2001). The Victorian era saw scientific theory replacing religious belief around mental illness and psychiatry emerged as a new discipline. The first link between mental and physical illness followed the 1926 Royal Commission on Lunacy and Mental Disorder which stated that Mental and physical illness should now be seen as overlapping and not as distinct . The 1959 Mental Health Act was the first evidence of community care and in the 1960s, following advances in medicine and drug treatment, more focus on rights of individuals, and advances in social science and philosophy combined to start deinstitutionalisation. Lipstick was a cover name for a famous 1920 s newspaper columnist, who wrote about her weekly adventures about New York as a flapper. She drank, slept with various men, smoked, wore dresses that didn t cover her knees, and she was sexy, rebellious, modern, graceful, honest, funny, and every teenage girls dream. Lipstick lived a life that so many women of the 1920 s wanted to be. Then there was the movie stars. Clara, Colleen, and Brooks were the flappers on the screen. Surprisingly only one of these girls actually embodied the flapper lifestyle off the screen. Brooks was this single actress. She slept with various actors, directors, and partied late. She drank and smoked. Brooks was actually from Kansas but literally ripped the Kansas out of her and built up a New York flapper instead. She hated Hollywood and never wanted to act but life took her that way. Clara however, loved to act and was just about the luckiest girl in the world. She won a contest that she probably shouldn t have won because of her poverty stricken life and horrible luck. However, she won and it brought her fame and fortune. Everyone loved her and she loved everyone. She smiled and said hello to everyone. Clara was the girl next door in Hollywood and the crowd loved it. Colleen is the daughter with connections. She got in by her uncle and once this Daddy, what is beer? act wore off, she hit the bar and cut her hair and became the irish flapper. She was the one that mother s would use to say it was ok to by their daughters dresses and let them live in the footsteps of flapperdom.
