JVPD Lake Restoration JVPD Lake Restoration Presentation Transcript

  • An initiative by the Collector & District Magistrate, Mumbai in association with Juhu Scheme Residents Associations & MOB
  • The Collector & District Magistrate office has identified Mumbai has 102 Lakes !!!! Juhu lakes is one of the largest in Mumbai
  • What is the status of the JVPD lake ?
    • It comes under the Airport Authority of India.
    • It is bordered by :
        • Nehru Nagar slums
        • Runway hangar of Pawan Hans
        • Residential societies
    • Encroachment is rampant from the slum dwellings
    • ‘ Sewage water’ outlets from Nehru Nagar have started degrading the lake.
  • Benefits of Reviving the Juhu Lake
    • Prevent Flooding in the JVPD area. Excess water will flow into this lake and consequently prevent flooding.
    • It will improve the water table , causing more wells to be dug (if required). The quality of water will also improve.
    • It will create additional water backup
    • for Juhu , and can be used for non-
    • potable uses as 75% of the water required
    • is for non-potable usage.
    • This will increase the oxygen levels in
    • the area.
  • The Challenge
    • The general impression of all the parties concerned has been that this is not ‘sweet water’ and is a water body that swells up when the tide is high.
    • Our first challenge was therefore to prove this is a lake.
  • Proof of JVPD Lake being a Lake
    • A study was conducted by collecting samples from varied locations at the said venue by Dr. Umesh Mundlye ( Aditya Environmental Service)
    • This was collected on 3/08/2009 .
    • The analysis proved beyond doubt that this is sweet water and should be revived to help the citizens of Juhu for their water needs, besides immensely helping the environment.
    • The main parameters to us as common people to consider are:
      • Salinity % : Is under 1% which proves that this is a sweet water lake.
      • Nitrates ( NO 2 & NO 3 ) is Nil which proves that the water is not contaminated by organic wastes.
      • Dissolved Solids : are way below the acceptable levels proving further that the water is clean
      • Ph : pure water has a ph of 7. The JVPD water presently is at an average of 8
      • Lastly, the abundance of flora & fauna and migratory birds proves that the water is still ALIVE.
  • Our Objective
    • To Ensure a ‘Zero Flood’ situation in Juhu.
    • To Ensure a ‘Reduced Carbon environment’
    • To Protect alternative sources of water
    • To Establish Urban lakes as ecological , cultural & public spaces
    • To Find some philanthropists to support the Rejuvenation program.
  • Waterless Mumbai
    • We never know the worth of water till the well is dry." Anonymous
    • Is it a reality we are edging towards?
