2. Teamwork?
Working in teams
is a huge part of
the business
school experience
as well as many
work
environments.
How do we get
from this…
3. Teamwork
To this?
What are the
limiting factors?
Why do some
teams fail?
Who do some feel
they work harder
than others?
4. Teamwork
Whether you like
it or not you will
be part of a team
in the near and
distant futures.
How do you make
teamwork work
for you?
5. Most team problems or meltdowns come
from a lack of communication or poor
communication
What is your common approach to creating a
team or working as a team?
Why keep doing what isn’t working?
6. Either online or in person
They share information and ideas
They contribute and let others know about
their contributions
They do not work on three things separately
and bring them together to
magically/hopefully form a whole!
7. Re-think your ideas of
teams
Re-imagine from the
ground up what you
think a team should
be.
Get rid of negative
team experiences
from the past—they
are destructive and
negative and will not
help in the future
unless you choose to
learn from them.
8. How do you deal with the following or learn
from experiences with team members like
these?
How would you communicate with them to
effect better results?
What would you say? Specifically?
What wouldn’t you say?
How would you say it?
9. Domineering
• Thinks leading is ‘my way or the
highway’; very opinionated
• Starts and ends all conversations;
has to have first and last word in
terms of work division, marching
orders, assignments etc.
• Doesn’t seek consensus or team-
building
• Will do the work of non-performing
team members in order to get the
job done
• Doesn’t full understand assignment
and generally gets C or passing
grades
• Doesn’t care about individual
members of the group as long as
work gets done and a decent grade
of B or better is achieved
10. Agreeable
• Doesn’t show any initiative
• Will not begin a conversation
• Will do whatever is asked with
minimal levels of commitment
• Doesn’t really care about
getting anything more than a C
and doing the least amount of
work possible
• Gets C’s and B’s
11. Disengaged
• Will not participate
in project or do
anything related to
it at all
• Doesn’t care about
getting a passing
grade or doing well
at all
• Feels they are too
busy with other
stuff including
school, family,
friends and will only
offer excuses for
not being able to
meet or do any
work
• Drops a lot of
classes
12. Clueless
• Super-nice and
friendly but has no
idea what the
assignment is about or
what is expected in
terms of final output
• Has not read any
materials for the class
or instructions related
to the assignment
• Wants to take control
of the group but
cannot due to lack of
knowledge so virtually
all contributions are
red herrings and
wrong directions not
relevant to project
• B student
13. Capable
• Highly capable in the
class and fully
understands the
assignment
• Not very forceful in
group conversations
• Generally an A
students but gets
frustrated with louder,
more vocal group
members who will
never admit that they
don’t know what they
don’t know
• Hangs back and lets
others decide what
needs to be done
