4. “The last thing I wanted to see taped to my bathroom
mirror at five-thirty in the morning was a newspaper
article entitled “Are You a Perfectionist?” But there it was,
courtesy of my mother, Ms. Subtlety herself. I was
instantly irritated because Allen Feinman had accused me
of perfectionism when he broke up with me last month.
The term he used was “rabid perfectionism,” which I felt
was a bit much—but then Allen Feinman had no grip
on reality whatsoever. He was rabidly unaware, if
the truth be known, like a benign space
creature visiting Earth with no interest in going
native. – Joan Bauer, ”Pancake”

Questions/Ideas/Comments?
Framework for teaching writing
Based on a mini-lesson of instruction
Gives student time to write and choice in writing
Produces strong desire and skill in writing
As a child I was a writer. Why? Because of relationship with my grandmother who spoke quotes to me and who wrote oral poetry with me. We played with words.
As a classroom teacher for 16 years, I repeatedly taught students to write “products”: business letters, essays, research papers, poems, etc. I taught many skills and processes with thse products and students grew in their writing, but I can’t say they saw themselves as “writers” or their love for writing and sharing their voices grew. Writers’ Workshop very much allows us to accomplish both.
Skills are important but strategies to think about using those skills are critical.
Ideas: Someone who is always holding in their feelings and doesn’t ever show much emotion – Mr. Anger Management
Someone who always jokes around – Mr. Circus
1-3 days – Invite guests in to share what they write and why; share different types of writing, its purpose and importance – whole class instruction; ask students to share what they write during the day
Text messages
Lists – homework
What would life be like without any writing?
Model with picture books
No waiting in line at the teacher’s desk or raising hands. Students must continue writing.
Writers are never done.
No erasers.
What is the expectation during writing time? - Explain when, where, what- Choice of writing from folder- Writing without talking the entire time unless you are asking for help from another student or are directed by the teacher to do peer conferences.- Application of the mini-lesson skillHow do I respond during conferring time? - Whole class writing time, quiet writing time when you can be talking/sharing with a partner, silent writing time - Provide a special place for students to keep their ongoing writings/pictures
Mentor texts are critical for understanding what quality writing looks like.
Compare it to FBI agents studying the real dollar bill rather than the counterfeit. DOL is based on looking at the counterfeit.
Where do we find mentor text examples? From the books we are reading in class. Collect over time. Match texts to your standards and list of skills to be taught for the year.
What can be taught from this mentor text for 5th grade?
Semicolon usage. “It’s okay to lose; it’s okay to not be number one year after year.”
Gerunds: “Taking steroids in sports is cheating.”
Interrupters or dependent clauses: ”….,even if almost everybody else is doing it,…”
Voice: How starting with the conjunction “And” makes the message and style more powerful.
Slinky: stretch your vocabulary – don’t use the same words over and over again
Battery: strong verbs give a paragraph powerCheerio box: main idea
Monkeys: Link your paragraphs with a variety of transitional words. Connected rings: conventions – How do your sentences connect together? TransitionsBrainstorm usage of other items….bring items into workshop
