3. Tiga model kegagalan pahat
1. Kegagalan Patah (Fracture failure)
◦ Gaya potong menjadi berlebihan dan/atau
dinamis, yang mengarah ke patah getas
2. Kegagalan suhu (Temperature
failure)
◦ Suhu pahat terlalu tinggi untuk bahan pahat
3. Keausan Bertahap (Gradual wear)
◦ Keausan bertahap pada pahat
4. Model yang lebih disukai: keausan
bertahap
Gagal patah dan gagal suhu
keduanya adalah kegagalan prematur
Keausan bertahap lebih disukai
karena ianya mengarah pada
kemungkinan penggunaan pahat yang
lebih lama.
Keausan bertahap terjadi pada dua
lokasi pada pahat:
◦ Crater wear – terjadi pada permukaan atas
(rake)
◦ Flank wear – terjadi pada flank (sisi samping
6. Crater wear, (atas), dan
flank wear (kanan) pada
pahat cemented carbide,
seperti terlihat pada sebuah
toolmaker's
7. Keausan pahat vs. waktu
Keausan pahat sebagai fungsi waktu pemotongan. Flank
mm flank wear.
9. Umur Pahat vs. kecepatan potong
Plot Natural log-log kecepatan potong vs umur pahat
10. Persamaan Umur Pahat
Taylor
Hubungan diberikan oleh F. W.
n Taylor
vT C
Dengan v = kecepatan
potong; T = umur pahat; n dan
C adalah parameter yang
bergantung pada pemakanan,
kedalaman potong bahan BK,
bahan pahat dan kriteria umur
pahat yang digunakan
n adalah slope/kemiringan
dari plot
C adalah intersep pada
sumbu kecepatan pada umur
pahat satu menit
11. Kriteria umur pahat pada
produksi
1. Kegagalan komplit pada ujung pahat
2. Inspeksi visual dari flank wear (atau
crater wear) oleh operator
3. Fingernail test (uji kuku jari) melintang
ujung pahat
4. Perubahan suara yang dipancarkan
oleh operasi
5. Tatal berubah seperti pita, memanjang
dan sulit dibuang
6. Degradasi permukaan akhir
7. Naiknya daya
8. Jumlah benda kerja
9. Waktu pemotongan kumulatif
12. Bahan Pahat
Mode kegagalan pahat mengindifikasi
sifat penting yang harus dimiliki bahan
pahat:
◦ Toughness /ketangguhan - untuk menghindari
kegalan patah
◦ Hot hardness - kemampuan untuk tetap keras
pada sudu tinggi
◦ Wear resistance - kekerasan adalah sifat
terpenting untuk menhan abrasi (pengikisan)
13. Hot Hardness
Tipikal hubungan hot
hardness untuk bahan
pahat terpilih. Plain carbon
steel menunjukkan
kehilangan keras dengan
cepat seiring kenaikan
suhu. High speed steel
menunjukkan performa
yang lebih baik,
sementara cemented
carbides dan ceramics
secara nyata lebih keras
pada suhu tinggi.
14. Tipikal nilai n dan C
Tool material n C (m/min) C (ft/min)
High speed steel:
Non-steel work 0.125 120 350
Steel work 0.125 70 200
Cemented carbide
Non-steel work 0.25 900 2700
Steel work 0.25 500 1500
Ceramic
Steel work 0.6 3000 10,000
15. High Speed Steel (HSS)
Baja paduan tinggi mamapu
mempertahankan kekerasan pada
suhu tinggi lebih baik dari baja
karbon tinggi dan baja paduan
rendah steels
Salah satu bahan pahat yang
terpenting
Sangat sesuia diterapkan untuk
geometri pahat yang rumit, seperti
drills, taps, milling cutters, dan
broaches
Dua tipe dasar (AISI)
1. Tungsten-type, designated T- grades (jenjang
T)
2. Molybdenum-type, designated M-grades
16. Komposisi High Speed Steel
Tipikal isi paduan:
◦ Tungsten dan/atau Molybdenum
◦ Chromium d anVanadium
◦ Carbon, tentunya
◦ Cobalt pada jenjang tertentu
Komposisi tipikal (Grade T1):
◦ 18% W, 4% Cr, 1% V, and 0.9% C
17. Cemented Carbides
Kelas bahan pahat keras berbasis pada
tungsten carbide (WC) menggunakan
teknik metalurgi serbuk dengan cobalt
(Co) sebagai binder
Dua tipe dasar:
1. Non-steel cutting grades - hanya WC-Co
2. Steel cutting grades - TiC dan TaC
ditambahkan ke WC-Co
18. Cemented Carbides – sifat
umum
compressive strength tinggi, namun
tensile strength rendah sd.
menengah
Kekerasan tinggi (90 - 95 HRc)
hot hardness bagus
wear resistance bagus
Konduktivitas thermal tinggi
Modulus elastisitas tinggi 600 x 103
MPa
Ketangguhan lebih rendah daripada
high speed steel
19. Non-steel Cutting Carbide
Grades
Dipakai untuk logam nonfero besi
tuang kelabu
Sifat ditentukan oleh ukuran butir
kandungan cobalt
◦ Jika ukuran butir meningkat, kekerasan dan hot
hardness turun, tetapi ketangguhan naik
◦ Jikan kandungan cobalt meningkat, ketangguhan
meningkat seiring kekerasan dan ketahanan aus.
20. Steel Cutting Carbide Grades
Digunakan untuk baja karbon
rendah, baja tahan karat dan
baja paduan lainnya
TiC dan/atau TaC
disubstitusikan untuk bbrp WC
Kompoisisi meningkatkan
ketahanan crater wear untuk
memeotong baja
◦ Namun sebailknya memengaruhi
ketahanan flank wear untuk memotong
non baja
21. Cermets
penggerindaan
22. Coated Carbides
Cemented carbide insert coated dengan
satu atau lebih lapisan tipis bahan
tahan aus, seperti TiC, TiN, dan/atau
Al2O3
Pelapisan diterapkan dengan chemical
vapor deposition atau physical vapor
deposition
Tebal pelapisan = 2.5 - 13 m (0.0001
to 0.0005 in)
Aplikasi: besi tuang dan baja untuk
pembubutan dan pemfrisan
Paling baik diterpakan pada kecepatan
tinggi ketika gaya dinamis dan gaya
kejut thermal rendah
23. Coated Carbide Tool

24. Ceramics
Pada dasarnya Al2O3 butir halus ditekan
dan disinter pada suhu tinggi ke bentuk
sisipan “insert” tanpa binder
Aplikasi: pembubutan kecepatan tinggi
untuk besi tuang dan baja
Tidak direkomendaikan untuk
pemotongan dengan interupsi tinggi
(mis. Pemfrisan kasar) karena
ktengguhannya rendah
Al2O3 juga dipaki secara luas pada
penggerindaan abrasif
25. Synthetic Diamonds (Intan
Sintetis)
Sintered polycrystalline diamond
(SPD) – difabrikasi dengan
penyinteran kristal intan dengan
butiran sangat bagus dibawah
suhu dan tekanan tinggi ke bentuk
yang diinginkan dengan sedikit
atau tanpa binder
Biasanya digunakan sebagai
pelapisan (tebal 0.5 mm) pada
pahat sisipan WC-Co
Aplikasi: permesinan kecepatan
tinggi pada fiberglass, graphite,
dan kayu
◦ Tidak untuk memotong baja
26. Cubic Boron Nitride
cubic boron nitride (cBN) adalah
bahan terkeras setelah intan
Fabrikasi menjadi pahat sisipan sama
seperti SPD: pelapisan atas pahat
sisipan WC-Co
Aplikasi: baja permesinan dan paduan
berbasis nickel
Pahat SPD dan cBN keduanya mahal
27. Geometri Pahat
Dua kategori:
Single point tools (pahat
matatunggal)
◦ Untuk pembubutan, peluasan luabnag,
penyekrapan dan pengetaman
Multiple cutting edge tools (pahat
mata potong jamak)
◦ Digunakan untuk penggurdian, reaming,
tapping, pemfrisan, broaching, dan
penggergajian
28. Twist Drill
Ujung twist drill mempunyai dua pemotong
Sudut ujung pada twist drill konvensional adalah
118°
Margins adalah ujung luar dari alur (flutes) dan
selalu digerinda menyesuaikan diameter drill
29. Twist Drills
Fitur penting pada penggurdian adalah
veriasi kecepatan potong sepanjang
ujung pemotong. Kecepatan maksimum
pada selubung luar, yang
membangkitakan permukaan silindris,
dan mendekati nol pada pusat puataran
drill ketika ujung pemotong diputar ke
bentuk pahat
Drills are slender, highly stressed tools,
the flutes of which have to be carefully
designed to permit chip flow while
maintaining adequate strength.
30. Twist Drill Operation -
Problems
Chip removal
◦ Flutes must provide sufficient clearance to allow
chips to be extracted from bottom of hole during
the cutting operation
Friction makes matters worse
◦ Rubbing between outside diameter of drill bit and
newly formed hole
◦ Delivery of cutting fluid to drill point to reduce
friction and heat is difficult because chips are
flowing in opposite direction
31. Cutting Fluids
Any liquid or gas applied directly to machining operation to improve
cutting performance
Two main problems addressed by cutting fluids:
1. Heat generation at shear and friction zones
2. Friction at tool-chip and tool-work interfaces
Other functions and benefits:
◦ Wash away chips (e.g., grinding and milling)
◦ Reduce temperature of workpart for easier handling
◦ Improve dimensional stability of workpart
32. Cutting Fluid Functions
Cutting fluids can be classified
according to function:
Coolants - designed to reduce effects
of heat in machining
Lubricants - designed to reduce
tool-chip and tool-work friction
33. Coolants
Water used as base in coolant-type
cutting fluids
Most effective at high cutting speeds
where heat generation and high
temperatures are problems
Most effective on tool materials that
are most susceptible to temperature
failures (e.g., HSS)
34. Lubricants
Usually oil-based fluids
Most effective at lower cutting speeds
Also reduce temperature in the
operation
35. Dry Machining
No cutting fluid is used
Avoids problems of cutting fluid
contamination, disposal, and filtration
Problems with dry machining:
◦ Overheating of tool
◦ Operating at lower cutting speeds and production
rates to prolong tool life
◦ Absence of chip removal benefits of cutting fluids
in grinding and milling
36. Gear Cutting
Gear cutting is the process of creating a gear. The most
common processes include hobbing, broaching, and
machining; other processes include shaping, forging,
extruding, casting, and powder metallurgy.
Hobbing is a machining process for making gears, on a
hobbing machine,
The teeth or splines are progressively cut into the
workpiece by a series of cuts made by a cutting tool called
a hob.
Compared to other gear forming processes it is relatively
inexpensive but still quite accurate, thus it is used for a
broad range of parts and quantities
38. Hobbing Process
The two shafts are rotated at a
proportional ratio, which determines
the number of teeth on the blank; for
example, if the gear ratio is 40:1 the
hob rotates 40 times to each turn of
the blank
The hob is then fed up into workpiece
until the correct tooth depth is
obtained.
Finally the hob is fed into the
workpiece parallel to the blank's axis
of rotation
39. Hobbing Process
Hobbing uses a hobbing machine with
two non-parallel spindles, one mounted
Video – Gear Hobbing with a blank workpiece and the other
with the hob.
The angle between the hob's spindle
and the workpiece's spindle varies,
depending on the type of product being
produced.
If a spur gear is being produced, then
the hob is angled equal to the helix
angle of the hob; if a helical gear is
being produced then the angle must be
increased by the same amount as the
helix angle of the helical gear
40. Hob
The hob is the cutter used to cut the
teeth into the workpiece.
It is cylindrical in shape with helical
cutting teeth. These teeth have
grooves that run the length of the
hob, which aid in cutting and chip
removal.
The cross-sectional shape of the
hob teeth are almost the same
shape as teeth of a rack gear that
would be used with the finished
product
Editor's Notes
Physical vapor deposition (PVD) is a variety of vacuum deposition and is a general term used to describe any of a variety of methods to deposit thin films by the condensation of a vaporized form of the material onto various surfaces (e.g., onto semiconductorwafers). The coating method involves purely physical processes such as high temperature vacuum evaporation or plasma sputter bombardmentIn a typical CVD (Chemical vapor deposition) process, the wafer (substrate) is exposed to one or more volatileprecursors, which react and/or decompose on the substrate surface to produce the desired deposit
Sintered -> Formed into a mass by heat and pressure
Diamond succumbs to graphitization, which means that it will change its crystal structure to graphite crystal structure at 250C in the presence of a catalyst metal such as carbon steel
Drill is called Twist Drill because it cuts because of twisting action. The rake angle being controlled by the helix angle of the drillFor a drill to bore true and on location it is absolutely imperative that the margin and the point be ground concentric and be on centerThe land is the portion relieved from the margin. Without this relief there would be a great deal of friction created during the drilling processAs the lips are being formed in the sharpening process to the desired angle at the very tip the "chisel point," is formed.General purpose drills normally have the chisel point. The big disadvantage here is that this point does not penetrate well at the start and has a tendency to wobble. To eliminate this wobble a center drill (below) is used to start the hole or a drill bushing to guide the drill
Coolants possess low viscosity as compared to lubricants
2. … Hobbing machine is a special type of milling machine.
1. … Note that the previous example only holds true for a single threaded hob; if the hob has multiple threads then the speed ratio must be multiplied by the number of threads on the hob.
There are slight changes to the shape for generating purposes, such as extending the hob's tooth length to create a clearance in the gear's roots
