2. WHAT IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION?
Physical education is the integral part of the whole educational program designed to promote
the optimum development of the individual physically, socially, emotionally, and mentally
through total body movement in the performance of properly selected physical activities.
It is a way of education through physical activities which are selected and carried on with full
regard to value human growth, development and behavior. An educational course related to
the physique of the human body. It encourages psychomotor learning in a play or movement
exploration setting to promote health.
WHAT IS EXERCISE?
Exercise is the physical exertion of the body-making the body do a physical activity which
results in a healthy or healthier level of physical fitness and both physical and mental health. It
aims to maintain or enhance our physical fitness and general health.
WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION?
To equip the learners with the necessary knowledge on how to deal with the physical
challenges and also how to behave correctly in an unconducive environments. To grow in
physical fitness there are four aspects to observe… physical development, social development,
emotional development, and mental development.
3. *Physical development
Selected physical education activities develop and maintain good health and high level of
fitness. Engaging in physical activities will lead to individual’s growth and development.
An individual who participates actively will develop and maintain good health and a high level
of physical fitness. The acquisition of physical skills can motivate an individual to participate,
further in physical activities hence his growth and development will be enhanced.
*Social development
Engaging in selected physical education activities develops the desirable social traits needed for
the adjustment in the society.
Social traits:
-Friendliness –cooperation –sportsmanship –leadership –honesty –respect
*Emotional development
It offers opportunity for self-expression and emotional mastery. Participating in varied physical
activities enables one to acquire pleasant attitudes, desirable habits, appreciation and values.
Emotional traits:
-Self-confidence –Self-reliance –Self-control –Courage –Determination
*Mental development
The focus is on the acquisition of knowledge and understanding ability to analyze body
movements and skills, evaluate game situations and make important decisions.
4. WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF MOVEMENT?
1. Locomotor movement – moving from one place to another
2. Non-locomotor movement – movement that can be done in one place to
another place.
WHAT ARE THE THREE TYPES OF SPORTS?
1. Invasion - are generally team games that require one team to invade
another team's defense to score. These games rely upon the concepts of
attack and defense and each team will either have players that combine
both roles (ie. Basketball) or players that have either attack or defense as
their primary objective.
2. Striking – term used in many games.
3. Fielding - term used in different sports.
