A French rat sets out to become a chef. A suburban family of superheroes defeats a power-hungry villain. Unexpected ideas, all—yet Pixar Animation Studios is turning these and other novel ideas into blockbuster films. How? As Catmull explains, Pixar’s leaders have discovered potent practices for structuring and operating a creative organization. For example, they give writers, artists, and other “creatives” enormous leeway to make decisions. They make it safe for people to share unfinished work with peers, who provide candid feedback. And they conduct project post-mortems in ways that extract the most valuable lessons for mitigating risk on subsequent projects. The effort has paid off. Pixar’s has racked up a unique track record of success: It’s the leading pioneer in computer animation. It has never had to buy scripts or movie ideas from outside. And since 1995, it has released seven films—all of which became huge hits. Emotion and passion are the two most essential elements in understanding how people learn. Often, the initial response to security threats is throwing technology at the problem. But as we know, you can’t fix all of your security issues without understanding the role humans play in the process. Join Nick Shackleton-Jones — 30-year learning and development vet, Former CLO at Deloitte UK and CEO and Founder of Shackleton Consulting — to better understand: - The difference between learning and education - What really drives how employees learn - How to develop a growth mindset that truly changes employee behavior Watch the full webcast here: https://www.infosecinstitute.com/webinar/adult-learning-security/

Held April 30th at "Design to Align", DMI / Intersection15 conference for Strategic Enterprise Design, Berlin http://2015.intersectionconf.com The purpose of design is to solve problems. Its added value is not only derived from shaping good solutions: it is equally about getting the problem right in the first place. Often enough in practice though, gaining an accurate, shared understanding of a design problem is neglected in favour of intense involvement with potential solutions. Which can lead to situations later in the process where it turns out everyone involved has a completely different set of unspoken assumptions on the underlying issue, or you may even discover you've developing the perfect response to the wrong question. In his talk, Rupert will outline the benefits of (re-) framing problems as a universal design technique and share practical tips for shaping precise and actionable problem statements.

Using the example of the Glass Bridge "game" from Squid Game, this talk looks at how a Quantitative approach, on its own, has limits when dealing with complex and dynamic systems and how User Experience Design, more specifically Systems Thinking, can be leveraged to work in conjunction with Data Science, to better achieve business outcomes.

Presentation from a workshop at the CanUX conference on Designing for Behaviour Change, co-presented with Akash Radia. The goal of this workshop was to provide a framework to help people evaluate how well a product or service is designed to support behaviour change. This framework can then be used to better design a product or service to better support behaviour change.

Presentation from UXCampOttawa Hiring is hard. The prospect of growing your team is exciting, but hiring the right person to grow your team is hard. But, that’s what we do as UX professionals, we tackle hard problems, and hiring the right person, can be thought of as just another one of those hard problems. So, before you jump to a conclusion and rush to post that job description to build your clone army, maybe you should pause, and (as you would do with any other design problem) make sure you have defined this hiring “problem” properly. In this talk, I reflect a bit on the nebulous term of user experience and the various skill sets that fit within its container, as well as step through some techniques to help you understand who you should really be looking for to grow your team.
