What is so great about social networking? Out of all of these networking forms how many have you actually heard about? How many have you used? The question here is this…are these Web 2.O applications really connecting us? I have relatives who hate the computer. They rebel against the fact that they see their kids and friends sitting behind a computer for hours while they are supposedly communicating to communities of people. They definitely have something to say when they see their people walking around with their faces behind their phones. Are we living in the same worlds? I created this presentation series because I would like to address the stigma that social networks don’t belong in the classrooms. Here is my take…
Our world in which we live in is evolving at a fast pace. In the area of technology, vast transformations have occurred in many classrooms across the world. With the potential to connect to subject matter experts and to other students and teachers of different ethnic backgrounds, a person wonders, “why are we not more social and open with our classroom time?I think it is time to consider the dominant ideology we are teaching out of. Why do most of us feel comfortable with controlled education and all we have to offer within the 4 walls of our classrooms?Should we as educators not reflect the world we live in today?
Should we not be teaching our students how to successfully interact with the world around us with the tools that are readily available and already in use?I believe it is our duty as teachers to climb out of our comfort zones and engage the world together with our classrooms.I think it is time to have a different look at education.Now I know that Learning how to fully utilize social-networking technology is at first uncomfortablebut the positives far out weigh the negatives.Kids already know how to utilize technology to be socially connected.Let’s teach them about the power that can be harnessed using that same concept for acquiring knowledge. Imagine how fun learning could be?
