2. Options:
There are multiple options to choose from,
when publishing and distributing my
magazine.
The traditional publishing house can shift hard
copies and assist with advertising clients.
‘Ezine’ publishing is a magazine’s online
presence, and managing the uploading of
content.
Smartphone apps are another option, though
are more commonly used for newspapers.
3. Use in the genre
My magazine of inspiration, DIY, began as an ezine, but
now distributes monthly hard copies through the Sonic
Media publishing company. A bespoke publishing house
that only has the responsibility of distributing DIY monthly
to a select few locations.
Issuu publishes the hard copy online in ezine format, where
the whole magazine is availble to view for free on
Issuu.com
4. Use in the genre
9 pages of NME is available in ezine format from issuu
embedded onto NME.com
The magazine has a large presence online, with Time Inc.
managing the website and an app to purchase and read
the digital copies of NME.
5. Use in the genre
Q magazine also has an app to read and download digital
editions for a fee hosted by Bauer Media.
Bauer Media is also the traditional
Publishing house for Q magazine.
6. 505
In light of my research, I will follow the trend of the music
genre and have a combination of media institutions to
distribute my publication.
Firstly, I will ‘repeat’ (Neale) DIY’s model of using an in-house, bespoke
publishing company to distribute my product. This is because DIY’s
Sonic Media successfully distributes DIY’s hard copy with 40,000 in
circulation monthly, (Source diymag.com), which is substantially better
than NME’s 20,000 with Time Inc. in 2013. I will also ‘upload’ my copy
into ezine format with issuu.com to embed onto my magazine’s site,
however will not create an app. This is because my publication would
be a new and small magazine with a niche following, digital copies
would not be viable with a small audience who prefer to read hard
copies than anything else. 505’s presence online will rely strongly on
social media like DIY, Q and NME do now for clicks onto the site, and
ad revenue to be made, where I can capitalise on music news.
